In the third hilarious installment of The Reluctant Reaper series, Kirsty d’Arc’s first Reaper mission gets personal when her evil ex-boss escapes from Hell and physically possesses Shannon, Kirsty’s BFF. To reunite rightful body and soul, Kirsty must outwit a demented demon, fend off an insane strangler, and bend the very rules of Hell and Earth.Kirsty may be a full-fledged Reaper with a scythe of her own, but Dante is still miffed that she broke the Reaper rules to take down her evil ex-boss, Conrad. And Dante is not above saying “I told you so” when Conrad develops strange demonic powers and escapes to the Mortal Coil. Although barely speaking, Kirsty and Dante are sent on Kirsty’s first Reaper mission: bring Conrad back alive…er…dead…er…Just bring him back to Hell.
But before they can re-scythe him, Conrad evicts his own daughter’s soul to take over her body. Yes, he’s not a good person. So it’s up to two good people (who are, ironically, from Hell) to fix this. But can Kirsty and Dante put their differences aside in time to take down Conrad and save his daughter?

I enjoyed "Esprit de Corpse" but not as much as the previous novel "Scythe Does Matter" because Kirsty is back in the real world. The puns and other witticisms about Hell really added to the charm of the novels so it was a shame that world was essentially abandoned. In "Esprit de Corpse" Kirsty’s evil boss Conrad has turned into a demon (thanks to her using Dante’s scythe) and possessed the body of his daughter, Shannon. The police promptly arrest Shannon for Kirsty’s murder. Kirsty’s not one to abandon her friend and so she convinces Dante to help her evict Conrad and get Shannon off a murder rap. Things get a mite confusing from here on in.
Kirsty went through a fairly big character reboot in the last novel and luckily that ‘can-do’ spirit has continued – she must be racking up all manner of karma points. She still has a tendency to whinge and do really stupid things which was irritating. Fortunately, she also has a habit of turning really bad situations around through doing something equally, if not more stupid. Kirsty’s devotion to Shannon really shone through and she even ended up watching over her body while she was incarcerated to make sure it was okay. The old Kirsty would never have gone to such lengths. I’m still not sure of the depth of her feelings for Dante because she isn’t prone to great introspection but she gets jealous whenever he interacts with another woman.
Dante treated Kirsty fairly poorly in this novel by patronising her, doubting her and accidentally calling her by the name of a woman he once loved. He seems to think that because he has been a Reaper for far longer than her, she can’t have anything of any worth to contribute. For all her faults, Kirsty is at least willing to take risks whereas Dante finds comfort in following the rules. I found this fairly ironic as he lives in Hell. I missed the many weird and wonderful characters of Hell. Shannon was fairly bland but Colin was suitably evil.
Grant tied up all the loose threads with this novel so I’m assuming it is the last in the series – yes, in case you are wondering, the stapler of doom does make another appearance. The denouement was a little too pat for me and the humour a little hit and miss but overall, I’ve enjoyed this series.
This is the third book in this series. I was intrigued by the blurb describing this novel as being about a mission where two people from hell, Kirsty and someone called Dante must outwit a demon, which seems to be a thing I am into at the moment. But I realise now that it was probably not a great idea to jump into the middle of a series because it was pretty confusing at the start. I enjoyed the writing style and the unique ideas in terms of character and plot. I do feel like some of the humour flew over my head and the ending falls a little flat. Still, this was an enjoyable read.
Kirsty scythed Conrad – her evil ex-boss who tried to sell her soul to increase the terms of his demonic pact – with Dante’s scythe. All the rules said this was forbidden, but no-one knew why. Until Conrad turned into a demon, escaped from prison and fled to the mortal Coil
Guess that answers that question
Of course, it’s Dante and Kirsty’s job to bring him back since they’re at fault – and quickly. But Conrad has returned to his old company and targeted his daughter and Kirsty’s best friend – Shannon. As if possessing Shannon wasn’t enough, she then gets arrested for murdering Kirsty!
Through all this Kirsty also has to deal with a moody Dante who is Not Happy with Kirsty over the whole scythe thing.
Oh this book. In fact, this series. I can see what it’s trying to do. I can see what it’s trying to achieve. It’s trying to be a very funny, fluffy, light and irreverent story with a slightly ditzy protagonist and lots of zany amusement. Kind of like Mary-Janice Davidson’s Undead series.
But it really isn’t working for me. It’s trying to force all these puns and commentary and it just doesn’t work for me. And everything about the world and story kind of revolves around setting up the next joke or gag so it all kind of doesn’t work for me.
I don’t mind the story in this book – the beginning set up was annoying and the conclusion vexed me, but the middle was pretty interesting. I followed along wondering what they were going to do next, how they were going to rectify things and if they even could, especially from the coil. I was interested and engaged but a little frustrated that they seemed to be more witnesses than participants in the story.
I do give massive points to the awesome judge who set the court room lawyers homework to learn the damn law and banning them from watching courtroom dramas. I cheered that judge. I bow down to this judge. This judge is beyond awesome.
I would really like to see Kirsty involved in a storyline that didn’t come about because of her own mistakes. The second book came from one of her unintentional blunders in the first book and this book is based on her grabbing Dante’s scythe despite knowing there would be (admittedly ill-defined) consequences. If there’s a fourth book in the series, I’d very much like it not to be another episode of “Kirsty D’Arc, scrabbling to clear up her mess. Again.”
It’s partly because of Kirsty’s inexcusable screw up in book 2 that makes it is almost hard be as critical as I might be of Dante’s arseholery towards her. He treats her appallingly, he’s sarcastic, he’s distant, he arrogantly pulls rank over her and he demeans her. It’s out of line and pretty clearly shown as such. In some ways it’s an interesting complexity – after all, Dante has every right to be angry with her after what she did – but even with his legitimate anger, his treatment is still out of line. Someone screwing up – even in a manner that is pretty inexcusable – doesn’t justify demeaning them the way Dante did.
Of course, that message may have been clearer if Kirsty didn’t spend time being jealous of Dante. I would actually have been happy if she confined her jealousy to Beatrice – because Dante calling Kirsty by Beatrice’s name is a pretty big motivation for that. But getting jealous because Shannon turns to Dante for comfort – especially when she herself didn’t acknowledge they were a couple – just cast a bad light on all of it. Her objection to Dante’s behaviour became clouded by her unreasonable jealousy and her jealousy over Beatrice merged with her being upset over Shannon. Her reasonable reactions are buried and shaded by a whole lot of unreasonable.
The fact that a lot of this book is based on Kirsty’s mistake means I’m also frustrated immensely by the amount Kirsty breaks the rules in this book. Yes, Dante’s being an arse, most definitely – but how many more mistakes will she make and how many rules will she blatantly ignore before she finally realises that this is the source of most of her problems? She just looks… not very bright. Like she’s in the coil, the human world, where she’s invisible and insubstantial. She makes a mistake and assumes people can see her. Fine. Then she does it again. Ok I imagine it’s a huge transition even if she has been on the coil before. And then again. And again. At what point does she LEARN? Conrad did the same thing – he continually forgot he was possessing Shannon’s body. I mean, not once or twice, but over and over again.
ESPRIT DE CORPSE, the third book in the RELUCTANT REAPER SERIES by Gina X. Grant continues where SCYTHE DOES MATTER leaves off. It's the next day in the Underworld, and Dante's mad (again) at Kirsty for using his scythe to reap Conrad Iver, Kirsty's evil former boss. Upon awakening, Kirsty and Dante are faced with a huge problem in Hell's Cells. It seems there's finally an answer to what happens when one reaper uses another reaper's scythe to zap someone to the Underworld.
The two reapers rush to Conrad's jail cell just in time to see him turn into a demon and escape from jail. Of course, the first place they need to look is back on the Mortal Coil. Dante wants Kirsty to follow him to the hospital where they reaped Conrad, but Kirsty goes to her former boss's office instead, figuring Conrad will want to show up there sooner or later. There she discovers that her best friend, Shannon Iver (Conrad's daughter), is the prime suspect in Conrad's and Kirsty's deaths. Kirsty wants to make a true difference in someone's life, and she and Dante do all they can to help Shannon prove her innocence. Conrad's evil attempt to use his own daughter's blood to extend his life another 25 years is jeopardized when a female convicted killer tries to murder Shannon.
ESPRIT DE CORPSE is a wonderful, fun-filled, and action-packed addition to the RELUCTANT REAPER SERIES. I like the new, strong, and confident Kirsty and how she jumps in to save Shannon. Kirsty wants to exonerate Shannon even as she struggles with Dante's and Shannon's burgeoning friendship.
The RELUCTANT REAPER SERIES is such a unique and funny interpretation of the Underworld, and I can't wait for the next book's release. You can probably read each book in the series as a stand-alone, but I believe it would enhance your reading enjoyment to read the three stories in order. Whatever order you choose, be sure to read them all if you're looking for a lighthearted, funny, paranormal story with a plethora of quirky characters!

My first thought after finishing ESPRIT DE CORPSE, the third book in The Reluctant Reaper series, was that I wish Kristy had just stayed in hell. After the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of SCYTHE DOES MATTER (so far my favorite), we find Kristy and Dante up on “the mortal coil” trying to save Kristy’s best friend Shannon, from her evil father, the same guy who was responsible for Kristy being in hell in the first place.
ESPRIT DE CORPSE was a bit of a disappointment after SCYTHE DOES MATTER. I guess it is hard to improve on a hell based school for grim reapers, in my mind, but going to Earth to save a character who has even less personality than Kristy displayed in the first book definitely was a step backward. Shannon was so bland that I even forgot her name only a few days after I finished the book. Plus, Dante and Kristy’s relationship was on the rocks, so there wasn’t even that to look forward to.
Luckily, we still have the same sense of humor, and of all the books, I really think Kristy comes into her own in this one. She manages to take charge and make decisions for herself. And ESPRIT DE CORPSE does tie up any loose ends from the other installments. Unfortunately, I wish there had been more Dante and Kristy action, more BFF moments with Kali and her other girlfriends in hell, and more of the world building that made the first two books so enjoyable. I can’t tell if ESPRIT DE CORPSE was the end of the series, but it tied up a lot of ends from the first two books in The Reluctant Reaper series, and if you’re curious about how Kristy ends up, you should definitely check it out.
Esprit de Corpse is the sequel to Scythe Does Matter. New reaper Kirsty D'Arc must work with her partner Dante Alighieri in order to finally bring down, and capture her evil ex-boss Conrad, who has a few moves up his sleeves (like escaping from his prison cell) that leaves Kirsty looking like a complete newbie because she didn't listen to Dante about not touching his scythe.
With Dante walking around like a peacock saying I told you so, it is up to Kirsty to use some imaginary scheming and not so by the book moves in order to put an end to Conrad's evil reign and in the process, saving her best friend's Shannon's soul.
Esprit de Corpse is entirely focused on Kirsty, Dante, Shannon, and Conrad. There is still the off cut humor that readers of this series have expected from Grant since reading The Reluctant Reaper. There is a bit of tension, and in Kirsty's case, a bit of jealously and angst towards Dante because of the appearance of a former "friend" of Dante's.
I'm left wondering if Esprit de Corpse is the last book in the series. It apparently ties up nearly every loose end since the release of The Reluctant Reaper so unless Grant has other misadventures, and comic relief already concocted, I hope she will let us know through her web page, or by commenting on our reviews!
In the end, there is no getting around not reading this series in order. Even though Grant does a good job of tying the story together book by book, it's nice to get to know the secondary characters like Charon, Kali, Lucy Phurr, Sybil Serpent, Sue Sayer, & Claire Voyant.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This third book in the series has all the fun Kirsty action that I loved about the first two. The humor and heart is still in the story as the reapers take on a new challenge. I love these books to itty bitty bits, and eagerly tear through each one. They are like little treats filled with oodles of wordplay goodness.
Having set herself up for trouble by not following one of the key reaper rules (don't touch someone else's scythe), Kirsty is forced to head back to the "coil" to hunt down the seemingly unstoppable Conrad. Sadly, Kirsty and Dante are still trying to figure out their working relationship and this leads to a lot of jealousy and arguments. On the upside, we get to learn a lot more about Kirsty's one true friend, Shannon, and how they all ended up in this crazy mixed-up situation.
These short reads are such a joy. They are fun and witty, while also filled with a ton of heart. If you're looking for a read that will make you smile -- this is the series to check out.
This book didn't disappoint! I had hoped the whole Conrad business was over but no! I really want to see him get his. The relationship problems Dante and Kirsty were going through at the time worried me. And I would be soooo pissed if he called me Beatrice too! Please tell me this isn't the last book! I'll even make a deal with Lucy.
I love the character names. There are the obvious ones: Claire Voyant, Sybil Serpent, Sue Sayer, Lucy Phurr... But the ones that make you stare at them for a few minutes before you get it were my favorites. Not sure why it took me so long with Colin Schotz, but Theresa Mudders was clearly Mother Theresa. And the shark lawyers; Ray Mora, Hammerhead, Greatwhite. Loved it. Kept me giggling.
I really enjoyed the 3rd and unfortunately last in this series. There was angst between Dante and Kirsty that was a little nail biting. Conrads on the loose- again. Finding out body jumping is fun and useful. They are trying to figure out how to help Kirstys best friend, all while on Earth. I think you will enjoy this series. It is best read in order.
I actually cared enough for these books to tell my husband. Most of the crap I read I am embarrassed about, but these books were entertaining. What more do you want.
