Jill MacLean was born on 1941 in England, UK. In 1950, her family moved to Nova Scotia, Canada.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science with honours from Dalhousie University, she married. She worked at the Fisheries Research Board until her daughter was born. Following the birth of her son, she was employed by the pathology laboratory of Sydney City Hospital and the biology department of Mount Allison University. More recently, she completed a Masters in Theological Studies at the Atlantic School of Theology; her thesis juxtaposed Hebrew concepts of chaos in the book of Job with modern chaos theory.
When her husband joined the Armed Forces as a chaplain, she had to stop working. They moved three times in the first 18 months, the last move was to Prince Edward Island. By then her children were in school; she couldn't get a job; and at the local bridge club, she kept forgetting not to trump her partner's ace.

However, she had always loved to read, fascinated by the lure of being drawn into the other world of the story. So one day she bought a dozen Harlequin novels, read and analyzed them, then sat down and wrote one. Her first book, To Trust My Love, typed with four fingers, was published in 1974 as Sandra Field (she believes she's curiously the first Canadian to write for Harlequin). During the four years she lived in Prince Edward Island, she researched an 18th century French settlement located near present-day Brudenell, resulting in a historical book, Jean Pierre Roma, published in 1977 under her real name. She also started to write in collaboration with other Martimer writer under the pseudonym Jan MacLean. She also used to singed her novels the pseudonym of Jocelyn Haley. Her pseudonyms was an attempt to prevent the congregation from finding out what the chaplain's wife was up to in her spare time.

Before she turned 40, her life was changed, she had lost three of the most important women in her life: her mother and sister to illness, and her seventeen-year-old daughter to a car accident, and she separated from her husband in 1976. One of the lasting legacies of the grief caused by these losses has been the idea that it is impossible and undesirable to live every waking moment in the knowledge that loss can strike at any time.

She's been very fortunate for years to be able to combine a love of travel (particularly to the north - she doesn't do heat well) with her writing, by describing settings that most people will probably never visit. And there's always the challenge of making the heroine's long underwear sound romantic. Her novels has been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Greek, Dutch, Swedish, Yugoslavian, Japanese... and sold in more than 90 countries. Her first collection of poetry, The Brevity of Red, was published in 2003. When her nine-years-old grandson, Stuart, asked him a book for him, she wrote her first Children's book and decided continued writing this type of books.

Jill now lives in Bedford, Nova Scotia, and she's lived most of her life in the Maritimes of Canada, within reach of the sea. Kayaking and canoeing, hiking and gardening, listening to music and reading are all sources of great pleasure. But best of all are good friends, some going back to high-school days, and her family. In Newfoundland, she has a beautiful daughter-in-law and the two most delightful, handsome, and intelligent grandchildren in the world (of course!).

RE One IN A Million - SF brings us a funny little story about an h who wins a million dollars and an H who has lots more than a million - but both want to be loved for themselves and not their money.

The story starts with an HP rarity, we get a prologue with the H being lonely on the beach and wishing her weren't, sadly his experiences have shown him that being loved for himself isn't very likely, but he still has dreams of the perfect lady for him magically appearing on his beach.

Then the story jumps to the h crying at the kitchen table because her boyfriend of three years has finally got around to proposing, right after she won the lottery. She did not say yes, cause she has a big idear he proposed cause now she is rich. She is also the guardian of three teenagers, her very much older (19 years) brother died four years earlier, the h had just finished college and was going to start medical school. When the brother died there was no one to care for his three children, their mum had died 3 years before the brother, their parents were too old for teenagers and the only one willing to do it was the h.

She packed up her life (that she misses terribly, and she still plans to be a doctor,) and moved to a tiny town cause the kids did not want to leave. The kids have some issues too, the oldest son is pretty sarcastic and surly, his dad did not like him cause he wasn't a numbers genius, the daughter was also neglected by the dead dad cause she was a girl and she falls in and out love on a regular basis and the younger son got all the dad's attention cause he is good with numbers but he wants to be an opera singer - which the dad thoroughly disapproved of.

The h is doing her best to get everybody raised and settled and things are well on their way, but everyone is asking her for money and she isn't sure how she wants to handle it yet, plus there is the whole marriage proposal thing. Her good friend offers to lend her a summer cottage for a month, and the h decides to take her up on the offer and catch up on her studying for the med school admission exam and figure out her financial plan.

The h takes off for the cottage and stops in the local diner along the way, she notices the H right away, but he sorta dismisses her with a look. Then she lost her wallet when she goes to pay and the H accuses her of trying to cheat the diner owner. There is a big verbal showdown, the upshot being the H pays for her dinner and then (after she gets lost,) he shows her the way to the cottage - he is her next door neighbor.

The H apologizes once he realizes she really has lost her wallet, the h is relieved that he has revised his opinion as they are the only people around for a ways, it could be a big problem if they spend the next month not getting along. Not that the H seems to have any problems with feisty women, when she comes to borrow the phone the next day and drools over his scantily clad self, he gets in a pretty passionate kiss and the h realizes that her old boyfriend never made her feel like that.

She finds her wallet where she left it at the gas station the day before and the H invites her out when she returns. This kicks off a nice little courtship - they enjoy spending time together but both of them refuse to discuss certain things - they tell each other to take the other one on trust and as it is established that no one is married, engaged or in trouble with the law, the relationship blooms.

Aside from one incident where the h walks in on the H when he is on the phone and he loses his temper and accuses her of spying. She wasn't, she was just coming to see if he wanted to see some deer, but she takes off and he hunts her down and apologizes profusely at the diner later. She accepts the apology and the dating is on again.

Then the h's wanna be fiance shows up and the h tells him she doesn't want him - he really was the only one in the small town she lives in that was eligible to date, so it was propinquity not love. He doesn't want her going to medical school and he doesn't want to leave the town. She wants to be a doctor, wants to delay having kids (she is 25) and wants out of the small town lifestyle.

The wanna be takes her refusal badly and tries to get her drunk, then won't leave when she kicks him out. She locks herself in her bedroom but he tries to break in, so she sneaks out the window and goes to the H's house. She winds up spending the night and the wanna be leaves the next morning without the h having to deal with him. The h and H spend more time together and do touristy things.

Then it is the H's birthday and the h makes him a big dinner and a birthday cake, the h gets a little too close with the personal questions and the H leaves, she had intended to consummate the relationship that night. He comes back over to apologize the next day and they wind up in bed.

Then the h finds out the H did not give her his full name, she is very uneasy and wants to leave - then she has to go home cause the oldest teenager has appendicitis and is in surgery and the daughter has the stomach flu. She doesn't want the H to follow her home cause he will find out about the money and she wants to marry him - but only if he really loves her.

She goes home, everything is okay and the teenager in hospital is happy to see her, so they repair their relationship. The h decides to set aside money for all three teenagers to do their own thing. The one who wants to sing gets a place with a big opera teacher, the oldest wants to buy a dairy farm and the daughter wants to be a nurse. The H shows up, he figured out where she lived and she finally tells him about the money.

He explains that he did not give her his full name cause his dad is on of the richest men in Canada and he too wanted to be loved for himself. So since money doesn't matter cause they both have some, they declare true love and everybody can do the career they want. The h is doing med school and the H is developing recreation programs for troubled teens and his dad's gazillion employees. HEA's are all around and kittens and puppies are dancing in HPLandia.

This one was a nice love story with the mutual deception being pretty funny as they both try to avoid giving away their secrets. The H trying to apologize in the diner was a great funny scene too, with the town drunk serenading them as he tries to apologize. A sweet little story and a good way to pass some time if you aren't up for the wrecky drama and like sensible and nice people.

Good, a book where you don't have to think. But not very exiting - you know the ending of the book a few pages in
