The Horus Heresy #Art Book

Horus Heresy: Visions of Heresy

Rate this book
A stunning artefact book for fans of the Horus Heresy

From the ashes of the Great Crusade, treachery was born. Always first among the superhuman primarchs, the newly dubbed Warmaster Horus turned his back upon the Emperor and embraced the dark powers of Chaos. With fully half the military might of the fledgling Imperium at his command, he set his sights upon the throne of Holy Terra and waged a war which would divide the galaxy forever... Visions of war, visions of darkness, of treachery and death – all of this and more is contained within this heretical volume. Iconic depictions of the Space Marine Legions and the heroes that commanded them are presented alongside artwork from renowned artists Neil Robert, as well as brand new historical notes on the Warhammer 40,000 universe by Alan Merrett. Witness the end of an era and the beginning of something far darker, as the Heresy continues to unfold.

I love this book. The fluff, the art, everything.

A must have for Warhammer 40k fans.

The original Visions of Heresy was a beautiful brick, but the decade later (since Collected Visions) glow up is utter gorgeousness!

This is just a phenomenal collection of new and old art that truly bring this epic saga to life.

The lore is an interesting mix of being an overview that doesn't spoil the specifics and intricacies from the various stories and some great scenes and quotes from the big players. The story covers before the Great Crusade to Horus' plans for his brother-generals after the whole hullabaloo on Isstvan III and the kerfuffle on Isstvan V.

The introduction of new art from various artists, including a good look at some of those spectacular covers from Neil Roberts and co, alongside the classics we know and love is bloody brilliant. My heart and vision of Darker Millennia will always belong to John Blanche and his crunchy gothic nightmare, but it's all fantastic.

Very excited to five into the next volume!

This book was my first ever purchase from a Games Workshop store, it has sentimental value for that alone(and soon I'd begin on the long, winding road of wargaming and playing with plastic army men, haha).
That aside, this book is pretty incredible. A sweeping, grand overview of the Horus Heresy, a very important and definitive event of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Overview is accurate, despite the book being some 403 pages(don't know why Goodreads has it listed at 320). As seen with the current publications of Black Library novels, there's a huge scope and depth to the entirety of the Heresy event! My only complaint is that given this scope, some of the events listed in the book contradict each other, or, if you've read the Black Library novels, aren't quite right. For example, in this book when they mention Jhagatai Khan and his run-in with the Space Wolves wasn't as friendly as was mentioned here! Or how the Khan went to Prospero to find the truth for himself, which was not mentioned at all. Another part I was confused with was mentioning the fall of the Word Bearers, I distinctly remember they were humbled by the Emperor after he ordered the destruction of the temples on the planet Monarchia? Yet this event was strangely absent in this book.
That criticism aside, love the sampling of different artstyles and techniques, they may look different, but all contribute to the overall feel of the Gothic far future of Warhammer 40K. I love John Blanche's sketch pieces the most, I feel those are the "definitive" view of 40K; messy, dirty and dark!
Overall, despite some inconsistencies in the lore, this is a great book for any 40K/30K fan. Even if you're not into the franchise, this book has a great collection of artwork and lists out the narrative in an easy to follow format, and it is a perfect intro to the grim darkness of the far future.

I really enjoyed the mix of old and new artwork, which adds to the legendary aspect of the Horus Heresy, sort of like the differences between medieval and contemporary artistic renderings of historical events in our world. Some very detailed and polished, others rougher and more vague, differences in proportion, etc. Rather than the narratives of the novels, this had the feel of an illustrated history book.

Absolutely fantastic.
A must-buy for any Warhammer fan.
The art is stunning and gives you some ideas for converting and painting your own figures, plus helps you with coming up with some background for your army.

I really liked this book, the first time I read it. As it turns out this book is just re-release of "The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions" with a different cover and a different title. There are some minor changes inside and a bit of new art, but for the most part it's the same book. Luckily I enjoyed it enough going through a second time, but still disappointing when you're expecting something new.

It is really a good book about the heresy but nothing new is presented in it. Also due to it being a collection some redundancy exists.

For fans of WH40K is this book a blessing. The main pros are pictures of course but texts about the Heresy are well written too. I´m really proud I have this volume in my library.
