A mixed bag for being an anthology collecting 3 novellas and an audio drama adapted in prose version.
Loved the first one and the second one was more than good, but the Gotrek & Felix tales "formula" is always the same here with few predictable twists:
• One or more villains scheme against the Empire or what else is the current duo faction.
• Gotrek & Felix argue/get drunk/get imprisoned somewhere.
• Felix unmasks the evil plot (after falling in love or bedding the only good looking human female character in the tale).
• One or more characters die (sometimes after betraying the duo).
• Gotrek's overpowered axe behead/cleave in two the villain(s).
• The End.
So much for originality.

A collection offour short stories by different authors. I enjoyed it. I also look forward to Road of Skulls as well as kinslayer and Slayer. This book could be read with no prior knowledge about the two.

For those unfamiliar the Gotrek and Felix stories are set in Games Workshop's Warhammer universe. Gotrek is a Dwarf Trollslayer - a member of a cult sworn to seek death by taking on the most dangerous foes. The bigger the monster or more numerous the enemy the better. Felix is a former poetry student who after Gotrek saves his life one evening swears to record Gotrek's doom in an epic saga.
I've read all of the William King books and most of the Nathan Long ones so this was my first experience of new authors adding to the saga. I have to say it was a mixed bag which is kind of disappointing and doesn't bode well for the future in my opinion.
Charnel Congress - Josh Reynolds. A three way dance between Gotrek and Felix, some necromancers and a vampire. Couldn't really get into this. I got a little lost with the descriptions of the vampire transformations which I couldn't really visualise. There's a cracking line by Gotrek in a bar in relation to alcohol consumption which put a smile on my face - I thought the personality of Gotrek was captured well here.
The Reckoning - Jordan Ellinger. I like a story with plenty of Dwarf culture. There isn't much more to the old 'skaven under a Dwarf hold' story we haven't seen before and the ending was a little weak but this was the standout tale. The culture and society of dwarves was richly developed in the story and we got a little more of Gotrel's backstory (by the way this fan web page is great for keeping track of the timeline http://kalevalahammer.webs.com/timeli...)
Into The Valley Of Death - Frank Cavallo - The main reason for me wanting to read this. It is the Felix 'prequel'. A story from before he met Gotrek. What I like about this is that the Felix in this story is quite different from the matured Felix in later books but the seeds of who he will become both in terms of his morality (and his handiness in a scrap). Cavallo could have just copied King and Long's Felix but he has kept his essence yet still done something different. Felix takes up with a Death wizard looking for an ancient book. I did wonder at the end of the story how Felix would ever get to civilization in one piece after the adventure though...
Curse of the Everliving - David Guymer. Really didn't like this, found it boring and just a big end fight scene without any of the charm. More importantly it didn't feel like Gotrek and Felix - neither character came across as authentic for me, I really don't care for the direction of the series if the characterisation isn't right. Neither character acted or spoke like they used to. They didn't even seem that close in the story and as everyone knows when they aren't abusing each other, being grumpy or angry these two really care for each other.

This one is soooo bad, I would give no stars if I could but there you go. This book has it all, boring characters, boring battles, boring cliches, you name it, some stories are so no-canon that borders on ridiculous, absolutely THE worst gotrek and felix novel out there stay away at all costs...

Decidedly mixed on this collection. The Charnel Congress wasn't bad, covering the return of Manfredd von Carstein and leaning into the spookiness of vampires. Think they needed to bring Mannfred back to life, I think he's supposed to have a role in the End Times.
The Reckoning got into Gotrek's backstory a bit, but the central plot point of Skaven trying to become dwarfs by aping their culture and dress to get into a dwarf-only vault was a bit silly, even by WHFB standards. Plus they'd already managed to get a weapon out? Maybe I missed it, but I don't think that was ever explained.
Into the Valley of Death was an OK read, but it was always implied Felix's adventuring days started with Gotrek and not before. I always got the impression he killed someone in a duel, then spent time spiraling until he got involved in the Window Tax riots and drunkenly swore an oath to Remember Gotrek. Would make a pretty solid D&D adventure though - party is trapped by a beastie, monster hunters rescue them, taking heavy casualties in the process, and let the heroes join up. They're promised riches to help a wizard recover a dark artifact from a necromancer's lair, and the wizard says it's to embrace the study of non-evil death magic, but the wizard they're following is a liar . . .
The last few stories were just bad. Curse of the Everliving, Marriage of Moment, Bertholdt's Board, and The Contest were terrible. They screw up dynamics between characters, misunderstand Dwarf culture, are poorly conveyed, and are far too short respectively.

Three well done Felix & Gotrek tales and a fourth which has very clunky prose, lacks Gotrek, and could be set in any milieu.

Not my favourite Gotrek and Felix stories. The third story in particular focusing only on Felix was my least favourite

A good selection of short stories to add to your collection

My review of the first story was ... supposedly saved here. I don't know where it went.
The second tale, "The Reckoning," by Jordan Ellinger starts out a bit slow, but quickly kicks into high gear once the core of the story is, but then fairly quickly thereafter lost my interest completely when a) the dwarfs were made out to look like absolute idiots, and b) a plethora of sidekicks were randomly introduced. I don't even like dwarfs in the WHF universe, and I was offended at how dumb they were made to look. And I don't want to keep track of a half dozen characters with 80 pages left to go. I skipped to the end, and luckily, you could fill in most of the tale with [then they fought some skaven] and the ending still works.
After that comes "Into the Valley of Death" by Frank Cavallo, which I just didn't make it very far in. It just seemed somewhat dull to me.
Lastly, David Guymer's "Curse of the Everliving." Not bad overall, but I found the baddie less than interesting or intimidating, and I did not care for the way Guymer seemed to write Felix as if he were Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. I hope to hell that's not the case for "Kinslayer." What a wasteful way to end the series, if so.
Overall not a terrible collection. I'm not sure if I liked the first one the best because I can basically take about 100 pages of G&F every year or so, or if it truly did stand out. For sure Gotrek's introduction in that story is still the highlight of the book.

Entretenidillo, con personajes interesantes, pero se queda a medias a la hora de profundizar en historias interesantes y zambullirse de lleno en otras menos atractivas (con la de Félix en solitario se me cerraban los ojos).
En general, el libro no está mal, pero desde luego que no son las mejores historias de Gotrek y Félix.
