SUMMARY (50 words or less)

This is the first book in the adult series that is connected somewhat to the author’s “new adult” series. This book was way hot and the relationship between the characters was off the charts hot. The imagination and world building this author amazes me. Read this one right now.

Rocked my socks right off. I'd actually give it 4½♥'s, but fudged up to 5 for GR. I received an ARC from A.M. Hargrove in exchange for a honest review. This book was SO great... it reminded me of the Donnie and Marie Osmond song "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N Roll" only, instead substitute Sci-fi and Dystopian (and a healthy dose of Paranormal.) I really love how this book mashes up so many genres together into this little harmonious, entertaining package.

Those that have shied away from A.M.'s previous works due to them being in the YA Category can pick this book up with no anxiety. It's spicy enough to turn up the heat on any reader. "Jurgasms", anyone? (Trust me, they are a VERY good thing and I'm first in line.) It was just the perfect balance of instant attraction, alpha males, fights, and the romance remains this roaring fire underneath it all. There is no fear in this book of insta-love, rather the romance is more organic and passionate.

Any concerns about not being familiar with the series are not a problem as well. While you won't have the full background, previous books are not required to still love and understand the book. It's a futuristic and darker world with aliens and other dark creatures that go bump in the night. Anyone who would enjoy something a little different, a little spicy will find a gem with this first book of the Praestani series.

Favorite Bit:
"Be glad you're not in my pants right now."
"But I'd love to get in your pants right now. That's exactly where I want to be."
He roared with laughter. "And I'd love for you to be in my pants."

Dark Waltz is the first book in a spinoff of A.M. Hargrove's The Guardians of Vesturon series. This book takes the characters from the YA series and brings them into a whole new light in this adult series, set a few years in the future. Don't worry…if you have not read The Guardians of Vesturon books, you do not absolutely need to in order to understand Dark Waltz. However, you will get a lot of background understanding by reading those books first.

That all being said, one of the reasons I loved this book so much was Jurek. I absolutely fell in love with him in Determinant, and here he is again, all hot and sexy. Now, at first Jurek is kind of…a jerk. But, can you really blame him? Look what he's fighting against and everything he has to deal with. He pretty much has the weight of the world on his shoulders. So I will forgive him if he acts a bit defensive, protective, and untrusting at first. He certainly redeems himself.

As for the rest of the characters, they were a lot of fun. I really loved Jurek's group of friends and can only hope the series continues with them. Liasare is a great lead. She's a bit naive about some things, but she's tough and does not back down to anyone. She's fighting for something she believes in and is willing to take risks to get there. Liasare's stubbornness and Jurek's demand for control do not go well together. Their relationship is hot and heavy and definitely explosive until they learn to trust each other.

Overall, a great sexy sci-fi story.

Dark Waltz, a Praestani Novel (#1) by A.M. Hargrove

Dark Waltz is an adult science fiction novel and is the spinoff of the authors Guardians of Vesturon Series (YA Genre). Since I am a huge fan of A.M. Hargrove I was really excited about reading this book to see how she crossed over to the adult genre. I have to say her writing of course is fantastic, character are developed well that you immediately have an interested in what is going on and I have to say I sort of have a crush on Jurek, plus in my head I can picture him tall, dark, long hair, muscles and very sexy. I wonder if aliens would have tattoo’s …yummy!

So this novel is about Liasare who is searching for her brother and she meets up with Jurek and the chemistry between these two is off the chart hot. Their story is full of mystery; adventure a tad bit of suspense and of course a sizzling romance. But of course Liasare is here to find her brother and has an uphill battle to conquer. She has to dig deep to find the strength to overcome her new abilities and to continue on in her search for her brother.

A.M Hargrove has written a fantastic story and I for one will recommend this book to all of my friends and followers. I have given Dark Waltz a 5 star rating as the writing is great, the story flows well and I’m in love with all the characters she has introduced us readers too. I cannot wait for the next novel in this series to see what will happen next.

Dark Waltz is an ADULT romance based on the character Jurek, who was initially introduced in the Guardians of Vesturon Series. He is a complex character that has been burdened by tragedy and is troubled by a horrific act he committed that has weighed heavily on his conscience for years. Everything he does has an ulterior motive...that is until he meets Liasare. I hope you enjoy the ride!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.

After glancing at some of the other reviews for this book it looks like my opinion is in the minority. It may have something to do with the fact that this is apparently a continuation of a YA series that I hadn't read. But then again maybe this just wasn't a read for me. There was so much I didn't like about this one it was hard for me to even give it two stars.

It was difficult for me to even place it in a specific genre, it was all over the board. There were aspects from dystopias and paranormal romance, which paring those together isn't all that unusual, then lets throw in erotica. Ok, I can see that. Now how about some religious fiction..... what? Yes, you read that right. I won't elaborate, don't want to spoil it for you, but its in there.

My next issue was the timeframe. I just see that its plausible to see that many changes in 15 years. A plague? Ok, I can see that. But the earth taken completely over by reptilian aliens and we are living on other planets within the next 15 years when we can't even make it to Mars now? I just don't see that as plausible. 100 years maybe but not 15.

Now lets talk about the characters, Liasare and Jurek (Jerk is more like it). I can see that probably fans of The Shades of Gray series probably like these characters, (sorry I didn't like that series either). Liasare is a strong female character in many ways. She puts a lot on the line to find her brother but when it comes to Jurek it just doesn't make any sense to me. Jurek is a hot guy definitely, but he's a jerk. No one is allowed to hurt Liasare but him.....what? Yep, its ok when he does it. She gets all mad about it but then he kisses her and then its all better......what? Can you say "unhealthy relationship"? How can it be ok to physically hurt someone you love? If you love them you don't push them up against the wall and choke them because you don't like their answers. And if you are the one being abused you are not gonna just let it go that easy.

This book does fall into the erotica genre. There are some steamy sex scenes. But if you are reading this one for the sex scenes start at about the middle of the book. The scenes in the first half are steamy but sexually frustrating. They never finish anything til about half way thru.

Overall, I didn't care for this one at all. But, having said that, I am apparently in the minority. I saw many positive reviews for it, I just don't share the same opinion.

WOW what a book. I have loved reading A.M. Hargrove's books. This is her 1st book into the adult genre which I found really intriguing and was surprised at her insight.

The characters carry on from her Guardians of Vesturon series. I loved the way she has portrayed Jurek and Lissare Davidson (January's sister). How these 2 come together with their fierce natures.

Keep them coming Annie and can't wait til the next installment comes out in both series x

To start with I am incredibly grateful to Hargrove for sharing her book with me! I've been a big fan of her work ever since I signed up to read Survival about a year ago. I've been absorbing her books ever since. So when Dark Waltz came out, which is a spin off of sorts for the Guardians of Vesturon Series, I was so incredibly excited! A new series by Hargrove, involving characters I already know and love? Yes Please! I was also pretty excited because this one was to be adult themed. If you've read any of her books, you know she can write up some incredibly drool worthy men. So I was definitely looking forward to expanding in that area ;).

So now that I have finally finished the book, I know that I have a new series to love and follow. Dark Waltz takes us on an adventure with the new race we discovered in Determinant, the Praestani. They are considered to be the most powerful race alive, and darn near indestructible. We met Jurek in Determinant, but in Dark Waltz we get to know him on a seriously deeper level. He has a soft intimate side that I just did not see coming, but I was pleasantly surprised! Although he can be a little to violent for my tastes at times, Liasare can push back just as hard.

Which brings us to Liasare. She is also another character pulled from Determinant. But not one we payed much attention to at all. I absolutely love how Hargrove does this. All her characters and stories interweave together so awesomely. It ends up that you get to know almost every single character at a very intimate level. I don't want to give away who she is, so I'm not going to tell you. It is so much more fun to discover it on your own. I know I love watching all these pieces come together to create this wonderful story. I also love that we get little peeks at the characters we met in previous books. Glimpses of what has been going on for them since we left them last.

So when Liasare leaves Vesturon to save her brother from the Xanthians she encounters Jurek, and the rest is, a very steamy, history. Hargrove did an extremely good job writing the more adult romantic scenes. They were romantic and intimate and perfectly detailed, without being to over the top or lewd. Aside from the very enjoyable love scenes between Liasare and Jurek, we also get fast paced adventure, action, and mystery! Liasare just might be the prophesied person to save everyone from the vile Xanthians. But the battles she has to fight a long the way seem impossible for her to win. With monstrous enemies and little to no experince in this new world of abilities she finds herself in, will she be strong enough? What is not to love about a book that has all those things?! Romance, Sci-Fi Adventure, fast paced action, steamy hot male characters, and a little mystery. You just can't complain with ingredients like that. Especially when they are so wonderfully written by a great author like A.M Hargrove.

If you haven't read any of her books so far, I so very strongly recommend that you do! Once you start you will be hooked! I can't wait to see what happens next for Jurek and Liasare, we were definitely left at a high point, aching to know more. Come on book #2, I just need to know what happens next!!

Okay I have to say this because I am going to use some language that is not suitable for anyone under 18 years old. *** This is an adult and mature book***

HOLY SHIT THIS BOOK IS AMAZING SO SO AMAZING! ~Team Jurek all the way!

I have never ever read an alien book that was so HOT and COLD! Liasare is a woman on a mission. Her brother is missing and she is determined to do whatever she needs to to find him. For three months she has not heard from her brother and she will do anything to find him. She talks to his best friend and when she gets no answers from him she decides she will go to Earth and see what has happened to him.

One thing Liasare is nervous about is going back to earth because she has not been there in 18 years. 18 years ago she was evacuated from the Earth and has not been back since so when she realizes she has to go back down to Earth to check on her brother she is very scared. The Earth was wiped out by Small Pox and wiped out all of the humans so she is not sure what she will find.

Then she goes down to Earth and she meets the sexy but allusive man Jurek. Jurek is the only that can help her but after spending some time with him she is not sure he is the right guy. Jurek is a complete ass to her and there are times when she thinks about beating the hell out of him but she knows she needs him and he is the only one that can help her find her brother. As the time goes on Jurek and Liasare develop a fondness for each other but secrets and visions might come between them. Will they be able to find her brother? What will happen once they do find him? Will they remain on Earth? This is such a kick ass read that you will not be able to out it down!

I don't normally write reviews, but I always make an exception for A.M. I've been lucky enough to meet some dear, dear friends here on Goodreads and she is one of them! Having heard about this book as A.M. wrote it, I knew it was going to be hot. Man did it exceed all expectations. The hot parts were scorching! The tension was insane between the two main characters and when we finally got what we had been waiting for it was even better than I imagined.
What surprised me the most about this novel were the dark parts. I had no idea this book would have such horrific scenes that literally had me crying for the main character. And to top it all off the utter desperation we got to see from Jurek added such a depth to his character that I completely fell even more in love with him. A.M. achieved a love story without even having to say the words. She showed us the character's feelings rather than simply telling us. It was simply amazing and definitely A.M. at her best! I can't wait to read more of her incredible work.

Earth was decimated in 2012 when the human population was annihilated by a virulent form of small pox. Liasare Davidson and her brother, Tommy were evacuated to the Planet Vesturion where they’ve lived since. It’s the year 2030 and Tommy, who returned to Earth for an assignment, hasn’t been heard from in three months.

Liasare Davidson and her older brother, Tommy, were extremely close so while it was pretty unrealistic for her to be returning to Earth alone to search for him, her motivations were understandable. Everyone around her on the Vesturion planet was stonewalling her so Liasare enlisted the help of a close friend (he was in love with her, she not with him) to help transport her back to Earth. She had not returned since she and Tommy were evacuated 18 years ago, was completely unprepared for what she faced when she arrived and quickly got into trouble, setting up her inevitable encounter with Jurek.

It’s apparent from their first meeting that Liasare, who is traveling under an alias (real name is Sarah St. Davis), and Jurek have an unexplained connection and attraction. He rescues her on several occasions from the Xanthians, a brutal and foul alien species who have pretty much taken control of the planet. Jurek and his team are attempting to help other planets prepare for a power play by the Xanthians to control the universe. He isn’t what he seems either but it’s clear he’s one of the good guys.

The arising conflict between the dark and the light nations is pretty exciting. It soon becomes clear that there are more dark forces at play as they discover some extraordinary circumstances on Earth. It might not be plausible to have developed the technology to the extent we see in the story by the year 2030, but I was willing to accept it given the emergence of so many different species from other planets who may have been more evolved. The action was exciting and unpredictable, even a bit brutal at times, but it really held my interest. The dystopian society left on Earth was pretty dismal but very creative.

What detracted from the story was the relationship between Liasare and Jurek. While she is 27 years old her behavior and dialogue was more fitting of someone still in her teens. I lost count of the TSTL (too stupid to live) moments and her constant use of profanity was just inappropriate. Cussing doesn’t bother me unless it’s just constant and without proper context, which is the case here. Even Jurek commented about it and often. Speaking of him, though honestly provoked to anger by her most of the time, Jurek would lash out and physically attack Liasare. The next moment they would be in full lust with each other. Fortunately, this diminished somewhat once they succumbed to their attraction and behaved more harmoniously. There are many steamy moments but you’re more than halfway through the book before these two consummate their relationship. By that time, I questioned why they even liked each other.

Despite the issues with Jurek and Liasare, I am looking forward to the next story in the series as things are not resolved when this one comes to a close. The excerpt included with my copy was pretty intriguing and I will definitely read the next book. I’m hoping, though, that the relationship between these two progresses to a more mature level and Liasare gets a cleaner vocabulary. She has an important role in the story, as does Jurek, and I’d really like to connect with this couple. It will only happen if the dialogue is more representative of the age of the characters.

(I received an ARC from the publisher.)

This is the first book I have read by A.M. Hargrove and I am now officially a big fan. I loved Dark Waltz. I have always been a fan of fantasy and science fiction, and Dark Waltz has both with some super hot romance, which makes this one great read. Set in a futuristic world, Sarah, who with the help of her Vesturon friend Shondra, changes her identity in order to go back to Earth, to find her brother Tommy, who has disappeared. Earth as she knew it no longer exists, and in the 18 years since she has been gone, it has gotten worse. An evil race of aliens known as Xanthians have invaded Earth, and no human is safe anymore. Now known as Liasare Davidson, she comes back with a vengeance and determination to do whatever she has to in order to find her brother. What she wasn't prepared for was Jurek, who changes her life and rocks her world. Liasare isn't sure exactly what Jurek is. I mean she knows he is hot, oozes with sex appeal, is arrogant, and possesses a power that she is drawn to and cannot explain. Somehow their destiny is intertwined and as the story progresses and things begin to unravel regarding this, Liasare finds herself the key to something so big she isn't sure if she, or anyone else for that matter can survive.

I really loved Liasare's character. She was headstrong, funny, far from perfect, screwing up and putting her foot in her mouth more times than she would like, yet extremely loyal and willing to do anything for those she loves. She's been through a difficult past and has faced things physically, mentally, and emotionally that many would not have survived. She is quite the heroine. Jurek.....I hated him, loved him, wanted to slap him, wanted to devour him, didn't like him, and then loved him some more. Jurek is a force to be reckoned with. He is the leader of Praestani people, radiates power and authority, and expects people to do what he says when he says it. Women fall all over themselves for him, and he has a history of being quite the ladies man, and OMG is this man sexy. He has quite the temper, and Liasare is afraid of him, yet drawn to him, and it isn't in her personality to put up with his or anybody else's crap, so she finds herself in verbal altercations which wind up physical more than once. The chemistry between these two is undeniable. Neither can deny their feelings for the other, and the relationship and ensuing romance between these two is entertaining, humorous, and off the charts hot. I loved watching their relationship develop, and especially loved seeing the changes that took place in Jurek as it did. He is one possessively fierce dude, but he loves just a fiercely and would do anything to keep Liasare safe.

The plot was intense and included some really horrific creatures, some kickass battle scenes, and the characters faced some really dangerous situations, especially Liasare, who finds herself being hunted by one of the scariest beings ever, and near death on more than one occasion. The book captivated my attention from beginning to end. There are some great secondary characters also. The story, characters and places they visited were creative and well-developed, and the romance was outstanding and had some extremely hot sexy scenes that will leave you breathless. I thoroughly enjoyed Dark Waltz and I cannot wait to read to read more of Liasare and Jurek's story. This is a great read and I highly recommend it.

4.5 stars. I didn't know what to expect from Dark Waltz. I'd never read any of Ms. Hargrove's Guardian's of Vesturon series, but I had heard good things about her writing, so when Candace asked if we wanted in on the blog tour I jumped at the chance to see what it was all about. I will say I was a bit apprehensive when I read the synopsis... I say I like Scifi- it's a broad category, but really I love my fantasy and paranormal romance, and I wasn't sure I could get into this alien world. Pushing my reservations aside, I dove in feet first and found myself immersed in a universe I was not quite ready for. It was complicated, and scary, and frankly, pretty dark and grotesque. It took awhile before I lost myself in the story. Sarah was not easy to connect with. This wasn't because she wasn't written well, on the contrary. She was just disconnected, on the defensive- and justifiably so, easy to sympathize with, but not easy to love. But Sarah didn't care. She stuck with her mission, and drug me along willing me to hear her story and help uncover her mystery. For a time that's what it felt like. I was being made to watch the disaster that was Sarah's pathetic life. She was impulsive and erratic. For a not-so-young woman she was immature. Granted she struggled with extraordinary circumstances, and overcame many obstacles. Still she was annoying me... Ok, dammit, she was pissing me off. I wasn't enjoying this journey but I was still intrigued. As the more of the story unfolded I still found myself not accepting Sarah's reactions and somewhat childish behavior. It took stepping back from her, discussing what had been read thus far and hearing a different perspective on our heroine, that I realized she reminded me of a character from a favorite series, one who in the beginning, drove me bat shit crazy and had me pulling out my hair and screaming, "What the HELL are you thinking?" - on several occasions. I was reminded she had to grow from somewhere. She was only human. She had to be weak to become strong. She was still struggling with her past, and trying to come to terms with what was thrust upon her, and what lay ahead. "Ok, Sarah. Let's give this another shot", I said. What did grab me from the start was Jurek. What an amazing, compelling, and completely mesmerizing character. His grace, power, and machismo, was enough to keep your heart rate up. But not knowing if he was friend or foe was suspenseful and exciting and really held my interest. He is just as confused and exasperated with our heroine. And then there is the romance. WOW! You just know when two hot-heads get together things could get explosive. Scratch that. They're like a nuclear power plant. These two could create spontaneous combustion. THEY. ARE. HOT. Seriously on fire. Their journey together is full of mind blowing and unimaginable twists- you won't see most of it coming. And what you guess may still shock and surprise you. I did say it was a dark and complicated world. And as they get more involved with each other, their worlds become more entwined and complicated... and that much more frightening. A LOT happens in this first installment. And you'd better believe we're left with a doozy of a cliffhanger. And you'd better believe I'll be picking book two, Death Waltz as early as humanly possible.

What do I know? I know I’m lovin this series! It’s a waltz that takes you spinning through space before taking that final dip.

As I’ve already given you a description and an awesome excerpt, my review is going to be an emtotional one, more about how the story made me feel and how I connected with the characters. So, I’ll get started:)

The first thing that captured my attention was this story is about returning to Earth from another planet, not about venturing into space. The Earth of today is overrun with hostile, nasty beings and humans tread carefully when they venture out. We are no longer at the top of the food chain. In fact, we are now on the menu.

What really grabbed me with Dark Waltz was the characters. I love character driven novels and the stars of this novel are exceptional.

Lisare left Earth when she was a young teen and didn’t return for eighteen years. It’s so much worse now. She thinks she’s prepared for what awaits her as she searches for her missing brother, but she is very wrong. She’s going to need help, whether she likes it or not.

What I enjoyed about Lisare is her toughness along with her vulnerability. She’s taken huge risks just in coming to Earth. She’s run into some situations that left her trembling and doubting her resolve. And she now has a mysterious stranger, a magical being, whose magnetisium is becoming harder and harder to deny.

There’s a mental connection, but that’s now what has her worried. She fears her bodies yearning for Jurek, it’s demanding ache for his touch. An accident a long time ago left her physically and mentally scarred and she has no idea how to protect herself from these feelings.

This is what Jurek is up against as he becomes more and more drawn to Lisare. He’s never wanted anyone like he wants her, but she’ll have to be handled carefully, if she ever lets him handle her at all.

I enjoyed Jurek’s inner turmoil and frustration. He’s a powerful, demanding being and he’s not used to being snubbed and challenged, especially by a woman. He has his hands full with Lisare, trying to keep her safe and struggling to get past her tough exterior.

Jurek was a favorite character of mine in Determinant. It’s great to read his story here.

Jurek also felt the mental connection to Lisare, but his bodies lust for her comes as a surprise. He has no lack of female partners, but this girl has him feeling things he’s never experienced before. He knows it will be much more than a roll in the hay with her and that’s not all he has to consider.

Dark Waltz is exceptionally written, flowing smoothly and keeping you engaged from first page to last. I found myself wanting to race to the finish and forced myself to slow down. I didn’t want to miss a single thing.

The fight scenes are exciting, the creatures are hideous, the mysteries and secrets keep you guessing, and the sexual tension builds and builds. What a read.

Dark Waltz is a fantastic first chapter in The Praestani Novels. This adult series takes place several years after The YA Guardians of Vesturon Series. You don’t have to have read them, but I would recommend it. Guardians is where it all began. It makes me very happy to know it doesn’t end here.

Original post here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2013/01/dark-waltz-blog-tour-guest-post-indie.html

In the year 2030, Earth is in shambles. Due to a terrible outbreak, the human population has decreased immensely. Not only that, but it has been taken over by Xanthians. They run Earth and most of its humans. When a woman named Sarah discovers her brother has disappeared while fighting on Earth, she goes on the hunt to find him on Earth. She changes her name to Liasare and runs into trouble in no time flat. She is found by a man named Jurek who is much more than he seems. With Jurek and his team's help, Liasare discovers more than she bargained for that could put her and the Earth's future at risk.

Oh my goodness! This was so good. The story is just insane. Even by the time you hit the 100th page, there is still so much to learn. This book was just action packed. Hargrove does a great job building up the dystopian world of Earth. I love the world she sets for us. It is very dark and gritty. I love the idea behind the Xanthians and how people try to survive with them being the rulers and all. It really added to the intensity of the story for me and made the world more believable and unpredictable.

The characters were thoroughly entertaining. Jurek is book boyfriend worthy. He does have his moments though. He can be very cold one minute and smoldering hot the next. But we do learn why he is the way he is. He has a lot on his plate because he is out hunting for something he may or may not be prepared for. But he will, oh boy he will. He is epic. Plain and simple. Lisare was a fun heroine. She was a bit naïve about the world around her given that she has been on Earth for almost 20 years, so she does have her share of moments as well. Her and Jurek are both pretty strong characters, so when they are together, things are combustible. A lot of the dialogue between them was very entertaining because they butt heads so much. To say I loved them together is an understatement. They really burned up the pages to say the least. Not to mention their back stories were great. I love how we explore Lisare's life and how big of a role her brother played in her life. She really would do anything to get him back. She is definitely an all or nothing kind of gal.

Dark Waltz is definitely a favorite. It was jammed packed with great characters and great twists. This read will keep you on your toes. I could barely put this down and when I did, all I did was think about it. I just learned that this is a spinoff series to Hagrove's Young Adult/New Adult series The Guardians of Vesturon. I have every intention of read that series. It is not absolutely necessary to read that series before you read this, but it seems to actually understand more about the world, well worlds, you should check them out. I know I will. So I have discovered two series I will be stalking all rolled up into one. Epic win! Highly recommended for dystopian, science fiction and paranormal romance fans because this book is all three in one. Do not miss this one.

I am just going to go ahead and spit out the things I did not like about this book. I hated, hated, and hated Jurek. He is annoying, mean, spiteful, arrogant, abusive, and an absolute man whore. I hated how one minute he would have Liasare pinned up against the wall by the throat threatening her and in the next breathe he would vow never to hurt her. Not to never hurt her again...but to never hurt her. Um, wait a minute? Didn't you just have her pinned against the wall, cutting off her oxygen to the point of almost passing out? Yeah. I am so not into that type of guy.

The other thing is I thought that Liasare needed to man up some. And no, ugly words and language doesn't make you a grown up. I actually agreed with Jurek in that respect. She could have toned down her words. It only made her look childish. But the thing is she needed to take a step back from Jurek and see that he is not her Prince Charming. She needs to see him for what he is...an alien that is mean and abusive.

Ok, now that I got that out of the way let me tell you what I did love about Dark Waltz. I loved Jurek. I know, I am totally contradicting myself now aren’t I? Well guess what? I don’t care. Yeah I hated him the first half of the book. But the second half I thought he finally started redeeming himself and became such a great character. I guess I had to look at it this way…he is an alien. He was not raised the way humans were…to have emotions, to love things, to care for things, to find things sacred. So giving him the benefit of the doubt, I started coming around to liking him and thought he was really a great guy…most of the time.

Even Liasare started growing on me. With her being human, raised in a world that has gone to hell and knowing the things I did about her growing up, I understood where Liasare's actions and language came from. She had walls set up and trust was not something she gave away freely. Slowly we start to see those walls come down a little bit at a time. And its then that I started to like her more and more.

I really liked the story line and found myself craving it when I was away from my nook. I loved that Liasare risked everything to come to Earth in search of her brother. She was a woman who put it all on the line for the one person she loved the most. She was willing to do just about anything to find him, even if it was leaving the comforts and safety of her home. And if she just happened to find someone to love along the way…then that was the sacrifice she was willing to make. ;)

I suggest Dark Waltz to those who enjoy a good adult read with a captivating story line and love an infuriating male lead; the kind that makes you want to slap him one minute and dry hump him the next.
Oh yeah, I went there.

Written in the third person perspective, Dark Waltz is a very adult rated read and you know I do like those :)

But... I'm not a fan of the third person voice in books. It makes it very impersonal and you don't really get to bond with the characters. In this book, there where many characters and each had their own thoughts and inner-voice so it made it a little confusing as to who was 'talking' or rather 'thinking'... you have to keep up with everything and you couldn't get distracted for even a moment, because the next time you look, you're somewhere else and you need to backtrack to understand it.

Another weird aspect of this book was when Liasare kept pulling out gadgets from her pocket and I never even knew she had them in there. I began to wonder if she was wearing clown pants, since she needed a lot of space for everything she was apparently packing.

The saving grace for this book is the "Adult Content". If you are into that, then this is candy for you. But if you are not into that and need something else from a book, then... I don't think the book was very easy to follow.

I'm not saying it's bad... don't get me wrong. It's a good book with good intentions, but it felt as if it didn't stick in one direction. Liasare was stubborn and Jurek was demanding and well you know the kind of torture it gives the reader, when character's just don't get along in the beginning, until they get a taste of one another and bam...! So the book went in that way, then the book went in the direction of Liasare looking for her brother and also, there where characters in the book, I have no idea what they were or how they looked. The book gave a lot... but all lacked depth and attention to detail.

"Be glad you're not in my pants right now."
"But I'd love to get in your pants right now. That's exactly where I want to be."
He roared with laughter. "And I'd love for you to be in my pants."

All-in-all, I did like certain parts of the book. And the part's I didn't, isn't because of anything other than the fact that I'm not that much into futuristic type books.

The Guardians of Vesturon have grown up! Oh, yes!!! This spinoff of A. M. Hargrove's New Adult/YA series is Fantastic! So often, we find spinoffs fall flat, they just don't have that spark the original series had....nope, not a problem here! I think heading several years into the future was a brilliant idea! I do suggest reading The Guardians of Vesturon Series, first, just to 'know' the characters and their stories! You'll be glad you did, trust me!

In Dark Waltz, we are several years into a future on an alien planet, now home to many humans from Earth, in order to save them from almost total annihilation because of a virulent smallpox outbreak.

Liasare Davidson needs to find out what happened to her brother, who has been missing for three months, after going back to Earth. She finds a way to sneak off Vesturon and travel alone, with no idea what she will find. Trained to fight, but not trained to survive, she uses every instinct she has in her search. Too bad she is out of her league.

Jurek, an enigmatic and powerful mercenary must come to Liasare's aid. He is a frightening and cold man, but she is drawn to him. Is it just for the safe feeling he gives her? Is it something more?

Without giving away too much more of the story, let's say they have a love/hate, push me/pull me, 'no relationship' type of relationship until FINALLY, they get it right, at the same time, at least for a while...and it is hot, it is emotional, both are holding back secrets, both have no idea they have had a connection for many years. Both are stronger because of their past damages. Both are awesome characters!

Liasare is snarky, feisty and has a mouth on her that doesn't quit! (All used as a shield.) Jurek may be brutal, but he is actually rather refined, in spite of his ability to inflict pain, torture and death! He also forgets that Liasare is not from his world, so is unaware of his customs, which she tramples on over and over.

The story is intense, the writing flows on and on, flawlessly! The secrets revealed, WOW! Great Read! Definitely romantic! Definitely ADULT!

I am totally a sci-fi fan... Star Wars geek here... Yep!!!
So reading Dark Waltz really brought out some giddiness in me with the paranormal and sci-fi factors intertwined. From page 1, I was drawn in... The world built in this book is fascinating and intriguing....the story we are journeying on is creative and unique... AND... To top it off... Brilliantly developed characters...
So, as I wind my way through each page getting know Liasare----our high strung, stubborn, heart of gold heroine---I am totally blown away with the life she has endured and overcome. There were times she could get on your nerves... But man, when she met Jurek---our alpha, control-freak, powerful, HOT hero---you just knew that this tale was going to be explosive...
The relationship between these two was so dynamic... One minute it was like "BOW CHICKA WOW WOW" and the next you were taking cover because the sparring gloves were on... The instant attraction leads to so many interesting details in to the fireworks that are sparked in their union...and oh yeah... LADIES... There were times I was having to wipe drool off of my mouth and moments when Jurek said things that completely melted me in to a pile of goo...AHHHH!!! So swoon worthy!!!
But, this story isn't just about their romance...there is a dark and twisted evil lurking and the mystery to find and dispel it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout... Filled with action, gut-wrenching scenes, you fall in to this thrilling, brilliantly written saga praying that it never comes to an end...
Well crap... Alas it does... But... Do not despair... There will be a book 2 and I am EAGERLY AWAITING!!!
Like now please!!! PRETTY PLEASE!!!!
A definite MUST READ!!!!

See more of my reviews on my blog Thoughts At One In The Morning.

My Thoughts:

When A.M. Hargrove approached me with the opportunity to read a book that was about Jurek from Determinant, how could I say no? I loved Jurek. He was freaking awesome and so sexy. Not only that, but this book takes place years in the future from that point in Determinant in a now dystopian society. Jurek + dystopia = heck yes.

I thought Liasare was the best. Liasare is actually January’s sister, Sarah, from Determinant. She’s heading off to find her brother Tommy, who has been missing on what is now a dystopian Earth, invaded by the Xanthians. She runs into Jurek, who helps her find him. It turns out to be more complicated to get Tommy back than they thought.

The relationship between Liasare and Jurek was the best one yet. It was full of passion and true love, it was hard to not skip ahead to see what was going to happen next between the two of them. Of course, if I did that, I would have missed the nuances of their connection. Then again, those sexy scenes were worth the wait.

Dark Waltz was a great read. I enjoyed seeing all the wonderfulness of A.M. Hargrove’s world surrounding the Guardians of Vesturon again, and being taken into Jurek’s world of Praestanus. The love story was engaging--I cannot get over how much I loved Liasare with Jurek. It was great to see Jurek fall for somebody. This is definitely a great series to get into and I would highly recommend it.

My Rating: Exceptional

This novel was something new, refreshing and different from the usual PNR story. I'm not use to read Sci-Fi PNR but when I saw the cover and read the blurb I couldn't ASK for this book (as a part of this blog tour) it was my chance to read and claim this one.

Liasare was a great character, sometime a little childish, but if you read this book, you will soon understand the background and also understand Liasare's behaviour.

Overall, we are in 2030 and the Earth has been taken and overpowered by an alien species. Liasare is looking for her brother who has disappeared, months ago, without a notice. While on Earth, Liasare will meet Jurek and his crew. From there, everything goes upside down.

The book is action packed all the way, until the very end. The interaction between Liasare and Jurek were funny and pretty interesting (ouff!). One thing I would like to mention: Jurek is a total jerk for almost the entire book. At first we understand the fact that he doesn't trust Liasare since he don't know her very well (and she's always lying!). But at some point, his reaction is overwhelmed and not natural. We can almost state that he mentally and physically abuse Liasare. After the second time I was a little reticent about Jurek!

Anyway, the whole story was awesome and interesting, the plot was really intriguing with the Dark and Light part, but I won't tell you too much! The characters were intense. Their past and background plus the whole alien and Sci-fi surrounding were making this novel a great new addition to my PNR list!

Okay, I didn't hate the book but I didnt love it either. I thought the storyline was really good as in the sense of where I see that the Author is heading. It's very unique in the story as I've never read anything like it. What I hated was the back and forth of the two leads which had me so annoyed at moments I wanted to just stop reading.

Jurek, physically hurting her and always shouting at her in the beginning through pretty much 70% of the book was on my last nerve and her acting tough and then crying and then apologizing and then why is he so hot... ahhh! We get it he's HOT! Cheese and Rice lets find out why else she likes him. I could of skipped a majority of this book and I would of been just fine because I felt the last 30% was fantastic. There was no childish banter between the two, the cycle finally ended of her messing up, getting hurt, him healing her, they wanna do it but can't or they get interupted and then they are fighting again. And let me tell you I cuss more then a normal woman should but even I thought it was way overdone. I found myself reading over the cuss words during an argument because it made it seem less like a tantrum and more like a passionate argument between two people that love each other.

This is the first book in a spin-off series from another series this author has written (of which I haven't read at time of reading this book). The fact that I hadn't read the other series didn't effect my reading of this book too much. There were some things that I felt we didn't know enough about and I found the beginning of this book a bit confusing but I think those problems would have been solved if I had read the other series first. I don't think it is necessary to read the other series before this one but I would probably recommend it.

That said though, it was an enjoyable read. This world the author created was interesting to read about. The story was written and flowed well. It was the first book I have read by this author but I would read more of their work in the future. It was a good sci-fi romance. I look forward to reading the next book.

O.M.G.!
This has to be the best paranormal sci-fi fantasy novel I've ever read, and I've read my fair share!
I LOVE this epic tale about Jurek and Liasare and the universe that surrounds them, which Ms. Hargrove has so very masterfully crafted. They are fleshed out in such detail and feel so real that I expected them to step out of these pages at any time.
Their love and passion for each other is literally out of this world, and I could feel their devotion to each other to the core.
Their story is fast-paced and twisted as he!l and kept me constantly on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and raising more questions with each new page.
I can't wait to read the sequel because the book hangover I have right now is just as epic as their story, that's for sure!

DROPPED.

Quite disappointed by how this failed to deliver even an average standard of PNR. The male lead felt TOO DETACHED and his attraction to the FMC failed to garner any genuine reaction. The FMC herself showed signs of a TSTL heroine who had to be saved multiple times by Jarek. Imagine if he weren't there, she would have perished before our story even began.

JAREK just rubbed me the wrong way and sent mixed signals. One minute he cares, the other he's brushing her off like a pesky fly and barking orders that just makes you feel like he didn't respect or give two shits if she lived or died.
