The Wrong Man: Who Ordered The Murder Of Gambler Herman Rosenthal And Why

Rate this book
2012 is the 100-year anniversary of the murder of small-time gambler Herman Rosenthal - the most celebrated murder of its time. Make no mistake, there are no good guys here; no innocent victims. The fact is Bald Jack Rose, a well-known New York City criminal, framed crooked New York City police lieutenant - Charles Becker - for the killing of stool pigeon Herman Rosenthal.

People in the underworld cheered the death of Rosenthal; he was disliked that much. But that doesn't negate the fact that the wrong man sat in Sing Sing's electric chair for ordering Rosenthal's murder, while the man who framed Becker - and orchestrated the murder of Rosenthal himself - walked away a free man.

"The Wrong Man" explains how this all happened, and who benefited from Becker's conviction and execution.

You'd be shocked, surprised, and sickened at how easily an innocent man, albeit a crooked cop, could be framed.

If it could happen to Lieut. Charles Becker, it could happen to any one of us.

A sobering thought, indeed.

Honestly to me it’s crazy how non serious the judicial system is. It really just a ploy to help certain people move up the ladder smh.

THE WRONG MAN: WHO ORDERED THE MURDER OF GAMBLER HERMAN ROSENTHAL AND WHY by Joe Bruno is fraught with details of a true crime committed 100 years ago this year in New York City. I've read several of Bruno's books and they are all well-written and well-researched. The author in my opinion, is a New York Historian.

Bruno unravels the true story of a highly decorated crocked cop who was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit, while the real killers walked away. The story is very interesting and is written like a murder, mystery, thriller.

Another good true crime book to add to your collection. Highly recommended.

"The Wrong Man: Who Ordered The Murder Of Gambler Herman Rosenthal And Why" by Joe Bruno is an excellently written account of the murder of the title and the court case that followed. Written in a gripping narrative this reads as easily as a compelling thriller.
Clearly well researched and confident about court proceedings at the times and about the facts, the author tells the story of what may have been a great miscarriage of justice. The fact that this has actually happened exactly 100 years ago but is about real people and events had a huge impact on me during the read.
The author did well with holding back his own conclusions until the end with great journalistic skill. Short and concise this is a great and powerful read.

"The Wrong Man: Who Ordered The Murder Of Gambler Herman Rosenthal And Why" is a compelling fact filled book that deals with the murder and the eventual court case that followed. Talk about corruption and deceit. This case is filled with so many wrong doings that you will have to question everything. Even authority. Joe Bruno has the knack for telling a story that makes the reader feel like they are sitting with the man who is telling the story. This true crime book is just as good as his others. I was intrigued, horrified, and entertained as well.

Short and too the point, but well put together. NYC in the era of mobsters and Tammany Hall is full of interesting stories-and this one was really interesting!
