Nurture: Give and Get What You Need to Flourish by Lisa Bevere

Rate this book
Mentoring is an effective way for individuals to pass on the benefits of their life experiences and the wisdom garnered from living. While this practice is valuable to shaping and influencing the next generation, Lisa Bevere identifies some short-comings in this approach. She explains that mothering invests encouragement and unconditional love, while instilling biblical truth that impacts the most important areas of internal and external life. In her new book, NURTURE, she illustrates the importance for Christian women to seek out opportunities to extend this greatly needed and rewarding ministry.

I would recommend this for all women. The book does a great job of talking to women at all age levels and calling us to Biblical standards of nurturing each other.

Two or so pages in and I was really really not getting it. So I gave up. I give it two stars based on the little I read. It could be an unfair rating.

Christian view on nurture

This book gives an account on the ways to be nurturing. Not just as a parent, but also as a friend, colleague or as a mentor. It uses many biblical quotes and so is aimed at Christians. There are many anecdotal stories by the author. The first half I found long and difficult to focus on. It gives background into what nurture is and how it can be used in context. This section also has the most anecdotes. I didn't enjoy this part and it's unfair to say it wasn't well written it just didn't meet my needs at the time. The second half goes into more detail on how to be more nurturing and although I found it a long read I found this half easier to focus on. Altogether, I personally did not enjoy the read and it took a while to get through despite usually being a fast reader. It was not what I expected but I pushed through and read it all.

This was one of the first books by Lisa Bevere that I ever read, and some fifteen years on, its message and themes have stuck with me. It's a beautiful exploration of why the generations need one another and how we can each come alongside to mother and 'nurture' others in some way.

Really loved this book. The chapter on Mary and Elizabeth was great! Actually they were all great! I was afraid at first that this book was going in the direction of male bashing but it didn’t! And who better to write that part of women and men looking at the world differently than a happily married mom of boys. Seriously great info in here!

I made it 28 pages, then skimmed through the rest and found no reason to continue reading. Admittedly, there could be some value in this book. But any author that insists on calling me "daughter" and "beautiful one," over and over, cannot possibly expect to be taken seriously. Also, just because an author places Bible verses throughout the book, doesn't mean what she is saying is based on Biblical principles. Chapter 4 flat out tells you that she's displeased with how sisterhood is represented in the Bible, so handily, God tells her "The chapter of the daughters is being written right now. Tell My daughters to write their lives well." It's just too much.

My leader bought me this book last year for Christmas and I've been reading it so slow, it has taken me nearly a whole year to reach the last page.

I must admit, I was really glad I have finally finished this book- it wasn't all that interesting. Neither did I really understood the whole book.

There were some parts that just confused me so much that I've actually skipped them...

But then, maybe it's because of my age. Maybe I'm too immature to enjoy this book. Nevertheless, it won't my list of favourite books.

Most of this book was simple material that probably isn't news to most people, but still a good reminder.

I really enjoyed Chapter 5 entitled "Be True"... the gist of it can be felt in the following quotes from that chapter: "Great, now you are a daughter of the light! now here is a list of rules, memorize them well." - "you have just been moved from the inward leading to outward conformity." ... " The dynamic of revealed or uncovered light happens only when we are true to ourselves and are led by our hearts, not by some list of rules."

I ran this course with our ladies life groups and what a journey! Women were released, encouraged and empowered to be who God created them to be. This book gives permission not only to be feminine, but to be uniquely individual. I love how this book values the generations and reminds us that we all matter, we all have something to offer. This book will feed your spirit and challenge you to nurture those around you.

I absolutely loved this book. It's just what I need right now. I think my female pastor realised as much when she loaned it to me! I think this author has a magnificent message for women everywhere, that we are to nurture and be nurtured, to empower others and be empowered by God. To seek out our spiritual sisters, mothers and daughters. This is the true spirit of feminism to me.

Most of the book was pretty fluffy. The last chapter really brought it home, though.

My favorite take-away: (on whether to be a mentor or a mother)
Mentors tend to reproduce themselves, but mothers want more for their sons and daughters than they ever had themselves. (p. 118)

I love every book Lisa Bevere has ever written, and love hearing her speak even more. This book is basically about loving other women, learning how to nurture and be a mother, sister, daughter, grandmother and friend in the kingdom of God.
