Twenty years ago a young Londoner named Lucy arrived in the Dorset countryside as a rather bemused bride. She knew nothing of the great outdoors and blithely agreed to spend her honeymoon harvesting. Her rural education was to be a fast and frantic one. This is the story of a woman who began rural life in romance, raised a family in the farmyard, was left by her husband just as her name was being made as a columnist for the countryside, and found a whole new life for herself in the hills and valleys she had come to love.Inspired by Lucy Pinney's popular columns for The Times , this bewitching bucolic romp is a glorious combination of Bridget Jones , I Don't Know How She Does It and Gervase Phinn. She became a farmer's wife for love of the farmer, but can Lucy's relationship with the countryside survive two decades, divorce and more mud than she ever dreamed possible?
Lucy Pinney wrote an extremely popular column for The Times, called Country Life, for over four years. With style and wit, Lucy chronicled life in the Devoncountryside - from diversifying wives and errant husbands, to lambing seasons and pet foxes - as well as life inside her own, less than perfect, farmhouse kitchen. Now a full-time author, Lucy has previously published two novels. She lives in Devon with her new partner Ian and three children Nat, Sam and Kathy.
I am halfway through this book and although I wouldn't describe it as great it is still a nice read if you like memoirs of country life which I do.
Finished this book and was more impressed than I thought I would be. This author is not afraid to expose her own faults, foibles and vulnerability and her pain is tangible at times as she describes the break up of her marriage making this a book not just about the trials, tribulations, and joy of farming life but a keen observation on human nature.
True memoir of a farm wife - very funny, poignant and good read if interested in the strange goings on with farms. Took about one month to read at bedtime. Central theme of being married and divorced from a farmer - maybe he didn't like being adored? Many animal stories - loved these - unusual
