About the author

Maurice Leblanc (1864 - 1941) was a French novelist, best known as the creator of gentleman thief (later detective) Arsène Lupin.

Leblanc began as a journalist, until he was asked to write a short story filler, and created, more gallant and dashing than English counterpart Sherlock Holmes.

Sospecho que le habría dado una mayor puntuación a este libro, si no hubiera sido mi primer acercamiento a las aventuras de Arsène Lupin (y no fuera uno de los únicos dos libros de la serie que tenía a la mano y que decidí leer, en buena medida, para ver la serie de Netflix con ciertos antecedentes). El mundo del "caballero ladrón" y el estilo de sus aventuras debería estar ya bien establecido a esta altura de la serie de novelas que protagonizó y su público seguramente estaría acostumbrados a muchos de sus peculiaridades. Por supuesto, el principal objetivo del autor era presentar una aventura entretenida y emocionante y, en ese sentido, es un éxito indiscutible. Y, sin duda, los últimos capítulos del libro y la solución desorbitada del misterio en que se ven involucrados los protagonistas son un pequeño gran logro a su manera: no queda un sólo hilo suelto, por mucho que la desbocada solución al misterio involucre generación tras generación de "víctimas" y "razas malditas" y el final de la trama requiera escapes de una teatralidad casi transparente. De cualquier forma, La demeure mystériuse es una novela sumamente entretenida.

4,75 J'adore Arsène Lupin. Beaucoup sont fans absolu(e)s de Sherlock Holmes, et j'avoue que moi même j'aime beaucoup Sherlock, mais je crois bien que je préfère Arsène Lupin. Ses histoires sont à chaque fois pleines d'aventures, de retournements de situations, de révélations fracassantes et parfois improbables. Et lui il est tellement charismatique ! <3

Pour être honnête, j'ai lu ce livre surtout parce que j'ai vu la série Lupin (et je me rappelle d'un autre livre où ils ont parlé des livres Arsène Lupin) et j'était curieuse. Quelques fois il était un peu difficile de continuer à lire parce que le livre vient de 1969 et la façon de l'auteur de parler des femmes m'embête (je ne peu plus voir les mots "ma petite Arlette"...) mais en acceptant/expliquant cela comme l'habitude de ce temps-là l'histoire était plutôt amusante et j'ai bien aimé la fin (et j'espère qu'Arlette pourra réaliser ses rêves!)

C'est par ce roman, dont le titre m'intriguait (le nom d'Arsène Lupin n'y figurait pas) et dont je n'avais pas lu le résumé, que j'ai découvert Arsène Lupin. Pourtant, j'avoue que, malgré mon grand intérêt pour les romans policiers, le gentleman cambrioleur ne me tentait pas, probablement à cause de la série qui a fait succès. Mais j'avoue avoir adoré ce roman et ces personnages, l'histoire était complexe et drôle ! En bref, je lirais sûrement d'autres romans avec M. Lupin !

This is a modern translation of the Arsène Lupin novel Le Demeure Mystérieuse. I really liked the footnotes (over a hundred of them!) in this novel, which referred to previous Lupin novels, and French references which would have been lost in translation, making me want to read the novels again. I’d be happy reading more translations from the translator P. Y. Thia, as not all of the Lupin novels have (easy to find) English translations.

OK, so, I love the "Arsene Lupin" series of books, I have read and reread many of the books from this series and some of them that were not loved by other readers were great to me, but not this one. I do not know If I Am to picky when it comes to books, If I don't have a good taste, If I expected too much and then got disappointed, but this book, I will definitely not reread. That feeling of excitement and wish to go further just to found out what happened in the end missed here, and unfortunately end of the book confirmed my initial feeling of this not being adventure I wanted to spend my time on! I love Maurice Leblanc, I love Arsene Lupin, but not in this episode! Characters in this book were kind of blunt, some of the scenes were too weak even though I don't expect this kind of literature to be on first class literary achievement, but more of an exciting adventure, a pass-time, but Arlette managing to escape "professional" criminals by jumping through the window and hiding in the room that both of them are searching in and are not able to notice her when she is right under their nose....not the best one. I just in general think that there could have been a lot more done with characters that Leblanc introduced.
