M.D. Grimm has wanted to write stories since second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things actually, but not that!).

Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English, (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?) she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier.

Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain, (or else what’s the point?) finding their soul mate in the process.

I have been following this series since the very beginning (starting with Psychic Moon). I think the development of The Agency vs. The Knights are getting better and better.

Likes
+ A black character (yes, variety from usual white characters is nice)
+ Hunter is an "enemy"; he is adopted by a knight family. Again, variety.
+ Deer shifter :)
+ The personal conflict that Hunter experiences -- after 7 years of indoctrination that all shifters are monsters -- is good
+ While it is, in a way, insta-love (shifters usually know right away about their mates; one of the downside of shifter stories, IMHO), the bulk of this story is Hunter's personal conflict, rather than making looooove.
+ The cliff-hanger in the end, which might be the start of the next book, I actually like it

Dislikes
+ The change of heart comes a bit too easy (yes, yes, I know it's novella length, but still ... it's a little too black and white)
+ The whole "I'm endangering your family because I'm a knight so I leave you with a note, you're better without me" trope is a banal plot. I am enjoying the story up to that point. Sorry.

But in overall, it's a nice addition to the series...

Once again the author is bringing me an entirely new scenario on which to chew. In 'Hunter and Hunted', Hunter is a young man who was adopted when he was thirteen. He'd spent his whole life in foster care or group homes and he was so happy to finally have a family. Of course, at the time, he didn't know he was being adopted into the Knights, and raised with all of their vitriol and hatred against shifters. Now he's twenty and is out on his own, assigned with killing his first shifter. Instead, he meets Glenn.

"Are you the monsters they tell me you are or—are they just misinformed?” Hunter demanded. “Are they just so bent on revenge for past grievances that they lost their way, or are they justified in their hate? I need to know!”

Hunter is such a confused young man. He wants to believe what he's been taught, he wants to believe his mother loves him, but he also knows she used her mental abilities on him many times as a child. Hunter has his own ability where he gets visions of the future. Each Knight has a special ability, just as each Agent does. Hunter has so many doubts. He couldn't watch the dissections as a child, it hurt too much to see the pain and torture his family put the shifters through.

The title might seem unimaginative. But hey this series kept surprising me - in a good way! After blind shifter of the previous book, we finally got a Knight as main character - and a black man too. And the shifter taking the front stage this time was a deer shifter. What a refreshing change!

Hunter was a confused Knight, questioning things the organization doctrined him to believe, ever since he was adopted by a high ranking member there. On Hunter's rite passage, Glenn - a deer shifter - stumbled into his line of riffle. From then on, Hunter's world turned upside down.
Romantic plot wise, there was nothing new here. As common in shifter universe, shifter beings often got attracted, attached, and mated someone in a short span of time. In this case, within days of knowing each other. Our MCs were likable enough, but nothing so special about them other than what I pointed out earlier.

Getting stronger in this installment was the Agency versus Knight organization. We met again with Agent Poe and his team, trying to infiltrate Knight's headquarter on a rescue mission. The link to previous book was also more felt here (the premises occurred two months after Blind Devotion).

And that epilogue! As if I needed that dangled in front of me to get me want to speed to the next book!? Oh what the heck, YES! That epilogue would certainly got me hurrying along with Agent Poe to get to Healing Minds. There. Happy now?

This, the fourth installment of Grimm's shifter chronicles, was a strong and wonderful story. I love the universe that the author has created with the series. We have shifters of all types that live their lives usually in hiding, sometimes very public as humans but few know the shifters exist. Then we have two groups that have psychic powers, who are actually descendants of the Fae. The Knights, whose mission in life is to eradicate all of the shifters throughout the world, and the Agency whose purposes to protect shifters and take down the Knights.

This is the story of Hunter, a young Knight who is on his mission as an 18-year-old to be initiated into the nights officially. After years of training (or is it brainwashing?), he now has to prove himself by killing a shifter. His ability is that he sees glimpses of the future. He sees a deer and quickly realizes it is a shifter, but sees a vision of being in that shifter's arms. Did you end up becoming fast lovers and have to convince Glenn, the shifter's family that Hunter truly is not a Knight and will not betray them. Along come Knights, and the Agency for plenty of mayhem! I like each story in this series more as I go. This is a lot of fun, and I'm not normally into paranormal romance type books, even the queer variety.

Hunter had been adopted and raised by the Knights, taught that shifters are evil. But he's always questioned that all shifters are evil monsters. So when he's sent to kill one, he finds himself instead looking for answers to the questions he's always held.

I liked Hunter and Glenn. They had a bit of a rocky start, and their trust came a bit too quickly (part of it being a shorter story), but I still think they were good together. A deer shifter was certainly a bit different than the typical predator species.

Hunter

Wow! This book is good. I am giving this a 4/5. Hunter is supposed to kill a shifter to prove that he is ready to become a hunter. He runs across Glenn a deer shifter. But for some reason, Hunter does not kill Glenn. In fact he wants to learn from Glenn. Eventually the two men become lovers. Hunter wants to leave the organization. Hunter leaves to save Glenn and his family. But Glenn follows him because he knows the hunters will kill Hunter. This is turning out to be a good series. I am going to buy the next one.

3.5* Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

Finally we are starting to get somewhere in regards to the knights! In the previous book, there was a little bit of information gleaned, kind of a teaser, really, that just whet my appetite for more so when I found out that this book would actually feature a knight I was completely pumped and ready to learn more.

Abandoned at the age of three, Hunter is an orphan that at the ripe age of thirteen is becoming disillusioned with the way things work. When he’s finally adopted, Hunter is thrilled but instead of the loving family he’s always dreamed of, he finds himself being indoctrinated into the Knights, an organization whose sole purpose is to hunt down and kill shifters. Filled with doubts, Hunter nevertheless goes off to complete his rite of passage, to find and kill a shifter, but when face to face with one he finds he can’t do it. Determined to learn for himself what the truth is, Hunter strikes up a conversation with the shifter instead and finds his entire world tilted on its axis.

So, I have mixed feelings about this one. Like I said before, I was totally looking forward to getting into this one but unlike the previous stories, I didn’t find myself gripped by the beginning. Honestly, the first half of the story was a bit lackluster in terms of having my attention caught and held; I did like it in an abstract ‘I really enjoy this series and the story isn’t bad but its not great’ sort of way. (If that makes sense.) Honestly, I think most of my issue was the way Hunter and Glenn’s relationship developed; I just didn’t find it that believable and the connection between the two was lacking for me. It wasn’t until Hunter had met Glenn’s family and had the vision about them that I really found myself interested in the story. I finally had that feeling of ‘This! This is what I was waiting for!’ From that part on through the end of the book I was invested in the story to a much greater degree than I was the beginning. The overall series plot involving the Knights and the Agency was moved forward and I was thrilled to see Poe again. The enigma that is the Knights’ boss was also ramped up a little and I really enjoyed how everything that happened at the end has opened up numerous possibilities for the rest of the series.

I liked the book enough to continue with the series though I would say its probably my least favorite of the ones I’ve read so far; the second half is what really brought it home for me in terms of enjoyment. If you’ve read the series up to this point, and like it, I’d recommend giving this one a read for the series plot advancement for sure but keep in mind that you may not be as thrilled with what you have to read to get there.

Whoa. Okay. It’s not often that within a few books I go from one to four stars in a single series, but I figure this book deserves that much, simply based on my enjoyment of it.

This story is actually sweet. It made me happy. And I like how this shifter’s family differs from the previous book’s shifter’s family.

There’s significantly less telling in favour of showing now. Sure, I still see some stylistic issues and awkwardnesses, but overall that has improved vastly as well.
Another thing to appreciate: the author is good at observing the details of nature, paying attention to the way deer change throughout the season. It shouldn’t be but this is rare in shifter stories.

And, as if in answer to the hope I expressed last time, we finally get a couple who actually meets in the book instead of having been close for years.
Of course, as a result love happens blindingly fast. But, well, intensely emotional situation and all. It does seem likely that Hunter simply imprints on the first person to show him kindness and to give him sexual pleasure – but in a strange, accelerated way this works. Hunter and Glenn may call it love; I wouldn’t call it love yet, but I can believe that they’ll get there naturally over time.

For the next in the list of things I liked, I need to backtrack.
I like Hunter’s conflict in the beginning. I feel his dilemma and he’s likeable and seems intelligent enough at the same time.
It’s interesting, actually. I have read plenty of stories involving hunters of paranormals who experience a change of heart and fall in love with a paranormal. Yet I can’t remember any other that took the time to delve into the reasons for it the way this does. Well, probably in part because most other stories featured more or less seasoned hunters, not beginners. But usually the character’s back story is limited to a traumatic event and a thirst for revenge, or to inexplicable selective blindness until the moment of realization. Basically the same thing every time and usually only sketched. In this story the matter is handled differently, with the attention and depth it deserves as the motivating factor for a main character (and the plot), and I like it.

I do have one significant niggle. Then again, Hunter is young and in a panic, so he probably can be forgiven for lack of foresight.

Series-wise, the plot thickens, continuing the path the previous book started. I hope it won’t be drawn out terribly as so many series do, but I am optimistic.
This book ends on a pretty blatant setup for the following volume, but it’s still within my personal requirements for not splitting a story up for the sake of teasers. (I.e. we’ve not really seen the couple in question interact yet – at all.)

So yes. This series has been improving with each instalment (minus that add-on to book one). Go, author, go!

One more thing to note, since I mentioned stylistic issues. Grammatically these books are a step up from the poorly edited ones. Bonus? The author uses shone correctly. It’s occurred often enough by now for me to be positive. This is too rare these days.

Heh, and I did indeed wonder how those bad guys would justify killing deer shifters. I mean look at those fangs and murderous claws, right? XD

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

Originally reviewed for The Book Vixen

In a Nutshell: Uncomplicated MM shifter romance with better world building than romance but still a decent read.

The Set Up: Hunter was orphaned at three and adopted by the Knights, an organization with a mission to destroy shifters. Hunter feels loyalty to the Knights so when his rite of passage time comes to kill a shifter, he goes hunting. But Hunter can’t shoot the deer, who he knows is a shifter, and when the deer shifts human, Hunter is attracted to the shifter Glenn. Hunter knows the Knights will hunt him down and this puts Glenn and his deer herd in grave danger.

Why I Read this Book: I read book three of this series and liked it enough to try the rest of the books.

What I Liked: I like the world building in this series. The more I read the more I see it as an internal struggle between two factions of part-fae people with psychic skills, the evil Knights and the good Agency. The shifters are caught in the middle as the Knights try to kill them and the Agency rescues them. I like this world, especially since the shifters aren’t just predators but have prey species like Glenn’s deer herd. This is unique in shifter stories and I like this part of the book and the series.

What I Also Liked: Hunter and Glenn have a fairly uncomplicated romance. Hunter has had doubts about the Knights but didn’t know anyone outside the Knights to ask questions of so when he meets Glenn he’s leery but also curious. Hunter’s attraction to Glenn and Glenn’s to him is straightforward sex then obligatory emotions but this simplicity was good enough to hold my attention. I have to also say that interracial MM romance is extremely rare and I liked this element to the romance.

What I Didn’t Like: As I mentioned, this isn’t a romance that’ll wow any reader so don’t expect to sigh but it’s decent.

IMO: This continues a good series but with just an adequate romance.

There are 5 parts to the overall story and only 2 ( The Beginning and Scrolls) are out so far, which include 12 books - about 20 books will be in the total (see author's website for complete listing).

I have read them 2x now as more books have come out. Each book has it's own story but there is a back story that threads throughout them - I will wait until all the parts come out now to be able to complete the overall story before reading again.

Also, the next time I read the series, I will read it in chronological order of the stories, not in the order they were written. You can do either, but the books from earlier times tell the deeper underlining story of the scrolls, which is what keeps the series going since each book has it's own HEA.

Okay, now we are starting to get somewhere. About 1/2 way through Hunter and Hunted, I almost DNFed. I almost set it aside and declared myself done with the series. However, I stuck it out. The series is finally starting to gel for me. The arc about the Agency and The Knights is starting to get some meat on it. It is all starting to get intriguing instead of being random ideas.

I liked that this expanded on the overall 'verse of the shifters versus the knights, but I wasn't too keen about the relationship between Hunter and Glenn...just didn't feel the connection and spark between the two of them through the story. It was a bit too easy for them. However, I liked the ending and I look forward to future books that will hopefully continue to advance the overall plot.
