Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.
Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.
By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.
He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.
Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite Ramsès, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.
Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".

No início deste século tive o privilégio de ler a pentalogia “Ramsés” de autoria do francês Christian Jacq. Com mais de 1200 páginas a série tem como personagem principal o icônico Ramsés II que reinou de 1279 A.C. até 1213 A.C. e praticamente formatou o Egito antigo que conhecemos, admiramos e que, até os dias de hoje é um prato cheio para mídias como cinema, séries de TV, RPG e livros. O tom grandiloquente da série que mescla fantasia, história, mitos e lendas torna a leitura bastante fluida e os ganchos ao final de cada volume funcionam esplendidamente como um poderoso incentivo para passar o mais rápido possível ao volume seguinte. Sempre quis ler mais da produção do autor, nascido em 1947, que além de romancista de sucesso é egiptólogo agraciado pela academia francesa, ou seja, ele tem vastos conhecimentos acerca do contexto histórico em que ele ambienta seus romances. No entanto os caminhos e descaminhos do universo da leitura me afastaram da obra do autor. Em 2021 pude ler outro livro por ele elaborado, o ótimo “O faraó negro” e agora, em fevereiro de 2024 chegou às minhas mãos este “Contos e lendas do Egito Antigo”.
Este breve mas caprichado volume, lançado originalmente em 2006, é parte da coleção “Contos e lendas” da editora Martins Fontes que fez aqui um belo trabalho com uma bela capa e belas ilustrações a cargo a artista Claudia Scatamacchia.
Os onze contos compilados por Christian Jacq foram retirados da riquíssima literatura produzida no Egito Antigo e fascinam pela sua diversidade e por serem expressões de uma sociedade que, a despeito de suas injustiças e distorções, defendia valores que estão fazendo falta hoje como bem demonstra essa afirmação, lúcida e fascinante, de Christian Jacq na introdução:
“Para ouvir a voz das divindades, é preciso respeitar a natureza, amar os animais, tentar compreender o que se passa no coração dos outros e, em qualquer situação, sempre fazer prevalecer a verdade sobre a mentira e a justiça sobre a injustiça”.
Todos os contos merecem uma atenta conferida mas, em especial, chamaram a minha atenção os fantásticos “O faraó Djêser e a cheia do Nilo”, “Um cão por toda a eternidade” e “A sandália de Nitócris” que, sem dúvida alguma, é uma das mais antigas versões da história que hoje chamamos de “Cinderela”.
