The Black Chip

Rate this book
The tight plot is well-paced and the action is tense...The strongest, most gripping relationship in the novel is between Noly and Kacy, the tough-as-nails PI and his kick-ass kid partner…A welcome foray into the Vegas PI genre, hopefully the first of many –----- Kirkus Reviews

THE BLACK CHIP is the story of Noly Boots, an ex-private detective that must re-enter the violent world he left in order to rescue his girlfriend and her daughter, abducted as pawns in a multi-million dollar theft.

As the novel opens, Sarah Benson, and her twelve year-old daughter, Kacy, learn about the gangland-style murder of Sarah’s brother. In fear for herself and her daughter, Sarah attempts to flee with Kacy, but is instead abducted by a mob-connected criminal and his cruel, unstable accomplice. Now Noly, using a network of friends, must find the two most important people in his life--and heaven help the bastards that took them, because Noly will show them no mercy.

I really had to think about this book before I could write a review. First, the "hero" character is less than a normal human. In fact, in the description of the character, I pictured Nole as the rock looking guy of the Fantastic Four, and he is really easily angered. He comes up with deep emotions, but they are surprising given his attitude during the majority of the book. He also does not play by the book, or even legally, but it doesn't seem to bother his close cop friend, or his friends in the military. Granted, he has had some hard knocks, but the characterization is a little far fetched.

Also, the plot relies on a really flimsy story. I had to analyze this from the beginning and what caused it all to happen to realize that the bad guys weren't very smart, and the more evil they were, the more stupid they were. A brother has a well thought out plan to get his sister out of a mental hospital, but doesn't have enough sense to see his big plan through to the end.

In the long run, the story was contrived from the beginning and not really believable or plausible.

I love action stories and the PI genre. And this book did not disappoint.

Noly Boots is a real tough guy. A former military guy and PI who thought he was free from his former life. But then, his girlfriend and her daughter, whom he loves dearly, are kidnapped as collateral damage.

As the story opens, Sarah Benson, and her twelve year-old daughter, Kacy, learn about the gangland-style murder of Sarah’s brother. In fear for herself and her daughter, Sarah attempts to flee with Kacy and her dead brother's girlfriend. Unfortunately all three are abducted by a mob-connected criminal and his cruel, unstable accomplice. Now Noly is forced back into the life he thought he had left, using a network of friends, must find the two most important people in his life--and heaven help the dudes that took them, because Noly will show them "no mercy".

The end has an interesting twist that you need to read to discover. And in the end, see what "no mercy" comes to mean for young Kacy and Noly who loves her dearly.

Wow.. I really enjoyed this book! Excellent! Going into this book, all I knew was it was "a classic tough guy novel". It really is so much more that that though. You get a feel for each character, whether its Noly, Kacey, Sarah or Collins, you get to know them and want to see them succeed. You start to root for them too!

The main character Noly is over the top to the point of being funny. The end is gruesome. Fast paced enough to keep a person interested. Drags on near the end. ? the ending--a little too much for me. Might consider reading a next one just to see if that is how the author will continue.
