Life in the sleepy town of Red Bat, Nebraska, is one of mind numbing boredom, as far as Hanna Davies is concerned. Working for her stepfather Gary at the Dune Springs Motel does little to disrupt the tedium of the teen’s life– where every night they eat in the same diner and every day they endure the same monotonous routine.
Their sense of normalcy soon evaporates when the disappearance of townsfolk is linked to the arrival of a roaming carnival. When Red Bat falls prey to supernatural creatures that maim, possess and even kill, Gary becomes the resident monster hunter.
Hanna’s interests, however, are captivated by the arrival of a mysterious trio that check into the motel. She discovers that newcomers Walker, Legs and The Kid have lives as troubling as the horror plaguing Red Bat. Even so, they put themselves in harm’s way, entering a world of unimaginable danger and unspeakable deception.
As the secrets unravel and the battle rages to save the town and those they love, it becomes clear that everyone has brought their troubled past into the fray and the demons terrorizing them might also come from within.
Since 2009, Jason Garrett has led readers on a series of thrilling journeys that began upon the foray into the world of Eric Kade in the novel HOMECOMING. Following the lives of two distinct characters, Jason's series immersed readers in a world of long lost love, faith and honor, betrayal and morality, and many other topics all beneath the clever guise of a horror tale. As seen through the eyes of demon-hunting preacher Eric Kade and the love of his life, Nickel Warren, HOMECOMING is an inspirational thriller sure to encourage and appeal to a vast audience of believers and non-believers alike.
In 2010, Jason led readers back to Bishop's Island for the tale of Aryn and Ryan Rayburn. With PURSUIT, his second novel under the Dream Big publishing logo, the history of Bishop's Island unfolds over the course of the abduction of beautiful historian, Aryn Rayburn. As her husband, Ryan, sets out to rescue her, she uncovers deeply buried secrets and treasures on their island home. This story of love and redemption has resonated with many readers and has opened up a whole new world for readers to discover.
Relying on his love of multiple genres and a belief that readers deserve to be treated to intelligent and complex stories with layered characters, Jason thrives on creating tales that resonate within the senses, the mind and the heart of the reader. Currently he is developing an expanded edition of his novel THE THREE as well as working on future titles.
I was interested to read this book as soon as I saw the cover, as visually is very striking. When I started reading this book and got into the details I wasn't dissappointed.
The opening of the book paints a surreal picture, and immediately you know that you are dealing with other wordly characters. You are introduced to a motel owner, Gary, and his step daughter Hanna who lead a secret life maintaining a small town secret about those that are dissappearing from the local population. The story paints the picture of a small town, whose problems get worse once a group of dodgy looking characters arrive at the motel looking for somewhere to stay, but it soon becomes evident as the plot thickens that they might need each other more than they would initially like.
The characters are likeable, and the budding romance between the youngsters in the story is heart warming.
What impressed me most about the way this book was written was how steadily as the chapters pass the book builds in pace, taking you on a similar ride as the lead characters until once you are near the end the action is constant. The book is descriptive, and the writing elegant, and if you enjoy a hint of the supernatural you will love Troubled Souls.
"Troubled Souls" starts off with the main characters of a bored teen-age girl and her step-dad. Sometimes boredom is better that fighting for your very lives! When a circus arrives in their small town, odd and unpleasant occurrences begin to take place. Pleasant page turning quickens to devouring the book at a rapid pace. :) :) :)
When the words of a book pull me in, and I am able to put myself into the shoes of any character: in this case, the young girl, her dad, and yes . . . the "evil ones", I find that I am immersed in AND become a part of the character living in the story. That is when I know I hit the jackpot and am reading a fantastic book ! ! !
"Troubled Souls" starts as a slow easy ride and then builds up momentum until the ending chapters, when all H*** breaks loose, leading to intense action scenes and thrills !!!
Very well written ! ! ! Thank you for the ride. :)
