No one had seen Big Bad Wolf for a week since the morning he’d gone hunting along the new road through the forest.
“Son,” he’d said to Little Bad Wolf, “this road is just what we need. People always have plenty of food, and now they’ll be bringing it right into the forest. Why, tricking them out of food is easier than catching a three-legged rabbit. I’ll be back tonight with enough food to last us a week!
But he hadn’t come back.
Mother Wolf had been against the plan from the start. She had many relatives who’d lost their lives dealing with people. Now, with winter approaching, she and Little Bad Wolf were alone and hungry.
Very cute :) Nice twist on the Red Riding Hoid story.
Definitely interested in reading the full collection, would recommend.
Boasting some dreadful, one-dimensional characterizations and a highly disappointing, formulaic finale, Little Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood will no doubt enthral the target audience, and for a free EBook, that's good enough for parents. Yet, people on here seem to love this, so it may be just my wizened, curmudgeonly, bad-tempered self that hates this book. And even though I agnize the fact that it's a boilerplate, run-of-the-mill short story, I can't help but find it less appetizing than everyone else. Plus, the garden-variety, abscessed premise is very, very, reminiscent of the 2005 movie Hoodwinked! so...
I loved this book because it added a nice twist to the fairytales we all know so well. I recommend this book to first and second graders. I think that all fairytales should be written with a twist
This isn't your traditional Little Red Riding Hood.
It has the main characters and some new ones. It's different from the original one, but in a good way!
Big Bad Wolf (The father) doesn't eat the grandma. He stays in her house for a week while she is gone on vacation in Florida! There are more surprises that happen in this story but you'll have to read it for yourself.
Definitely has new twists! Very good book. It's funnier when you already know the original story.
Finally got around to reading this sample story! I have to say that I really enjoyed it and am actually considering reading the other books that this author has written! It gives a nice twist on these fairy tales and adds a little humor to it as well! Would for sure recommend it to anyone that I can!
This story is entertaining and cute for kids around 7 to 12 years old, I think. There are a few bigger words that need to be explained but at the end of the story, a surprise character does a lot of explaining!
Mostly this one is telling about some collections of alternative fairy tales. There is one fun story that is both modern and dated at the same time. I enjoyed it and would like to read more of the stories listed here.
This fairy tale retelling is a sample story called Little Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood by Bruce Lansky and Timothy Tocher. In this version of Little Red Riding Hood we have L.B. (short for Little Bad) Wolf trying to locate his missing father Big Bad Wolf. His mother doesn’t want him to go after his father, having had relatives who had issues with Three Little Pigs and a boy named Peter, but like all youngsters L.B. ignores his mother and is off to track his father down. Kids, they know everything. He runs into a little girl who turns out to have been the last person to see his father. She’s called Red Riding Hood, so named due to her mother taking advantage of a fabric sale and being determined to use every scrap of the yardage, much to her daughter’s dismay. Who know fabric sales could be so ruinous to a child’s self-esteem? Anyway Big Bad apparently went off to Red’s granny’s house and now Red is taking goodies to granny every day. L.B., after some negotiation, takes Red’s place, and her goodies, and is off to granny’s to see what has become of his errant father. SPOILER: No grannies or girls wearing unfortunate red clothing are eaten during the course of this story! It’s a fun little story, especially the 1, 2 Thousand (read the book if you want to know what it means). Also being a sample book it gives you the idea of what the full book New Fangled Fairy Tales is about, where other fairy tale classics get the same humorous treatment. I liked it and maybe you will too.
I laughed the whole way through the intro but then didn?t enjoy the story. I love that Mr. Lansky took the idiosyncrasies of some of our favorite fairy tales and brought them into today?s world, because while I love fairy tales, I?d hate for my daughter or nieces to think that they need a man to rescue them!
But this story fell a bit short for me. It was cute, no doubt, just not as much fun as I was expecting and I really had trouble keeping the kids interested ? even though it was short.
I?ll absolutely try a few of the others but this one just didn?t click for me.
This is a very modern twist on Little Red Riding Hood, almost in the style of The Sisters Grimm stories. Little Bad Wolf lies to his mother, Big Bad Wolf leaves his family for a week while pretending to be Granny and stealing her food, Red Riding Hood has an attitude about her clothes and disobeys her mother by talking to strangers, and Granny vacations in Florida. The wolves do community service by giving the food to the other families in the town instead of going to jail.

What a wonderful new take on an old tale. This is definitely a fractured fairy tale in the best sense. With new and different line that will have you laughing at the action. Great Read.
A short read containig a more realistic and humorous version of a classic fairy tale. This definitely spurred my interest in the other works by this author.
The Big Bad Wolf is running a successful scam on Little Red's Grandma until Little Red catches him in the act.In this free short story Big Bad Wolf is running a successful scam on Little Red's Grandma until Little Red catches him in the act. If you like this sample story, look for The Newfangled Fairy Tales series. Each fairy tale in the series puts a delightful new spin on classic stories and themes. King Midas is a workaholic banker who would rather play with his money than attend his son's Little League baseball games. The Three Bears invade Goldy's house because their forest home is being stripped to build a super highway. A Prince refuses to marry any of the grumpy princesses who lost sleep because there were peas under their mattresses. A clever princess pays a dragon to lose a fight so she can marry the man she loves. The twenty short stories in this series are lots of fun."Here is a new generation of fairy tales to make children laugh, not hide under the covers." --Stephen Mooser, author of Young Marion's Adventures in Sherwood Forrest: A Girl's to the Rescue Novel
This made me chuckle from the very beginning... and I'm talking about the Introduction. Bruce Lansky certainly has a new twist on some tired old fairy tales! The story of Little Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood by Timothy Tocher was, um, interesting. I think my favorite part was Red Riding Hood's explanation of why she was dressed in red. Oh! And when she pulled out a spray can when confronted by L.B shouting "Freeze, Buster! One move and you're history!" That's when L. B. notices it's a can of cheese spread.
I'm not sure exactly what age group this book should be targeted for. Certainly not the very young. Perhaps the 10 to 12 year olds.
I was nervous that the bad guys would become the good guys or something in this story but not what happened. I liked the variation on the fairytale and it definitely satisfactorily dealt with the problems that the author had with fairies when he was a boy (read book intro for details).
No sex, bad language, violence or religion in the story.
I loved this so much! So far, I only have the free sample (Little bad wolf and red riding hood), but fully intend to buy the full book. This is a totally new twist on the fairytale classic, brought right up to date with modern speech and terminology. The characters are fun, the scenarios are hilarious, everything about it is a breath of fresh air. This is aimed at 7-13 year olds, but anyone with a sense of humour and young at heart will love it. Superb!
Little red isn’t so helpless after all. Grandmas is vacationing in Florida and little wolf has come to look for food. But did both wolves trick little red or did she finally catch on?
Was able to read this short story courtesy of the author & am now determined to acquire the print copies for my personal collection, for gifts for the grandchildren & for a donation to our local community library.
If you are looking for something easy and calming, this story has given me that. Also as it says it doesn't give me a different perspective on fairytales, and I have loved those my whole life.
eh... what can I say? a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The twist is somewhat ok, but in the scads of other retellings of fairytales, it's no bombshell.
