Wow!! You have to wonder how the human spirit can endure some experiences and survive. I lived in Muncie where the story took place but rarely left the university campus. The time the author lived in Muncie was a good decade and a half before me. Race relations have certainly improved but we still have a long way to go. The book is also about socio-economic inequality, on that score we have even more work to do. Some in my book group did not care for the author's writing style but the story was so interesting I hardly noticed.

A poignant true story of the author's life as a Negro boy with the trials and tribulations that come from day to day. The story gave the reader a feeling of actually living his story when a drastic change occurs to the family.

I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in examining their thoughts regarding racism and the ramifications for the children involved.
