What do you do when the love of your life turns out to be a millennium old werewolf who decides to turn you into one also because she thinks you’re the answer to an ancient prophecy? Oh, and then she dies, without telling you that little part about the prophecy? Well, if you’re Clifford Crane, you muddle through it like you always have. After all, it’s not the first time you’ve tried to change for a woman. Only this time the change is going to last for a thousand years. Jeez, it might as well be forever. Now it seems everyone thinks Clifford is the Red Wolf of Prophecy, the one foretold to lead the werewolves in a great war to save the human race from being enslaved by vampires. Clifford’s not buying it, and he wants to reclaim some semblance of a normal life. But, there are three beautiful reasons he cannot cut his ties to the pack of werewolves that want him to fulfill the prophecy. There’s Heather, the sister of the Uwharrie Pack alpha, whom the pack has chosen as Clifford’s mate. There’s Nicole, the talented young Omega wolf, a seeming reincarnation of Clifford’s once and greatest love, who shares a strange and disturbing bond with him. And there’s Danielle, the gorgeous young vampire who currently shares his bed in a forbidden affair. Clifford faces a difficult choice indeed, but it may not be his to make. Powerful forces are afoot in the world, and to protect those he cares about, Clifford must seek the help of the powerful Fae who foretold the prophecy in the first place, the very one who might do anything to make it come true, the mysterious Dragon of Doughton Park.
John Hundley lives and writes in Salisbury, NC, USA. When he's not writing urban fantasy, sci-fi, or epic fantasy stories, you can find him hiking in the nearby Uwharrie National Forest, cycling, playing guitar, or binge-watching Netflix.
Cliff's character is fun reading about - he chews on stuff and hesitates making rash decisions but he ends up doing exactly that!
the Inner Circle pack wasn't stupid - they guessed Danielle might be spying for her master etc
Nicole & her problems with Cody seemed genuine - she's an Omega & he's a dominant, things shouldn't be smooth in their relationship & they weren't
how Cliff realized that they didn't have much of a plan when the packs attacked the vampire nightclubs & that it was luck that got them through. It thus becomes essential for any battles in the future books to be meticulously planned out.
the twist at the end - can't wait to see where Claire's been!
What I didn't like:
Cliff's soft spot for Danielle has become irritating - when will he get over her?
There wasn't much indication in the first half of the book about Cliff being hung up on Claire and suddenly he just was?
I would have liked some more details about the Dragon & his sidekick but I'm pretty sure, we'll learn more in the next book. A good follow up to an interesting book!
First, I love the cover!! The first book is getting a new cover too But besides that, Mr. John so nicely asked me if I would beta read for him in the book-this review is based on that beta read, but I doubt he changed very much as it was pretty spectacular, even in the rough stages!! So, in the first book, I kinda thought Clifford was a push over. He is supposed to be so “special” yet I find him slightly pitiful LOL or at least compared to the Clifford in this book! I love when a character grows and you SEE it! I had a conversation with Mr. John about his character’s “self warring” and to me, I thought he was literally fighting himself at every turn. Not just about being bitten and turning into a werewolf, but about his life. He’s worried about falling back into old addiction habits, and girls finding him attractive, and he doesn’t really wanna be a werewolf, and he’s middle aged going back to college and even though he’s really smart, he sometimes made stupid desicions… WELL NO MORE!!! This book has not only redeemed Clifford personality to me, but I think I may also be slightly in LUST… sorry Heather and Danielle, but I totally am!!! I don’t care how old he is!
He originally starts out with not wanting to have anything to do with the werewolf world. He’s so torn over the fact that his actions caused death, even if those deaths were chosen by those who died. So, he’s having a very non healthy relationship with Danielle, who has now turned Vampire (umm, sorry spoiler alert haha) and it’s just weird to me. I am sorry but I HATE DANIELLE!! or I really really love to hate her! She is truly the bad guy to me, regardless of who the actually plotting bad guys are But back to Cliff, so he of course gets pulled into the array of chaos again, BY HIS OWN ACTIONS!! I mean you would think he would totally learn his lesson the first time that making heroic acts will bite you in the booty later, right… NO, he so does it again!! I’m not saying it was a bad choice. I cheered out loud when this happened. And I’ve wanted him and Heather to have their “moment” for ages!! And it STILL takes more time, as both Heather and Cliff are totally NUTS! LOL So ya know, fun stuff!
There are so many characters that come into play here. I mean werewolf pack, vampire maniacs, normal people… You just don’t know. And when I beta read for Mr. John, one of my favorite scenes comes into play with a secondary character. I happen to love Kendall. He’s hot-so LADIES I TOTALLY CLAIM HIM HERE AND NOW!! Mr. John, if I can have a wish, I think I need you to make me Kendall’s girlfriend hahahahaha But anyways, so Kendall is gunna take one for the team in a bad situation and is seducing a human thrall, and it’s just so priceless!! Everyone NEEDS to read that scene, seriously! can we all say AWKWARD!! BUT HILARIOUS! LOL And my next scene is FINALLY with Heather and Cliff, and a river… no more than that can be said Next, I know this may be strange, but Mr. John actually writes about his characters doing things real people do… LIKE PEEING!!! everyone has to do it, yet it’s never mentioned
And Nicole, I really love her character. I can’t say that enough. I am so glad she is now a major part of this! Now action… There is so much action in here. Danielle totally goes nutso on Cliff, and Vampires are trying to kill people, and werewolves are getting crazy!! I mean, it’s just an all around great book, and I seriously CANNOT wait to see where this is going to lead… AND THE END!!! Mr. John, you have made my list of killer cliff hangers!! I am a huge fan of good cliff hangers and I liked to DIED!!! Another reason to hate Danielle! BUT BEST PART… THERE’S A DRAGON!!! People, werewolves and dragons together, I literally salivated! YES!!! If you didn’t know, there’s also a lovely cajun lady who has some spots and I will show you a little goodie about that in a sec.
All in all, there is nothing to say other than I LOVE THIS BOOK! I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! GIMME GIMME GIMME MORE!! Really soon, pretty please Mr. John It would be so appreciated! You have done such tremendous greatness since the first book, so I can’t wait to see what you’ll do to my heart next! 5 HUGE PAWS!!!
This is the first time reading this author which the title is actually what drew me to this book. So when I opened it up even though it was the second book in this series I quickly caught on to what was going on. Normally I read also alot of romance in the genre but to my delight this was not bogged down in it but it does have some. The characters are engaging which they would need to be in this story. This is really a adventure I would say with lots of drama that contains twists and turns. The main character Clifford is one that you become to really like but he is not your average wolf. There is going to be war but poor Clifford does not think he should be the one to lead. This author takes you to the why's and wherefore's that are filled to the peak with drama. There is a dragon in all this who is the one is kinda also like the watcher in all this. The bad guys in all this try not to appear so bad like they are the victims but oh the true colors do shine through. So glad the author clears things up that happen with him and the lady vamp which in turn show him the light haha. Anyways this is a refreshing read that is chock filled with fantasy adventure that would quench any readers thirst that was craving this kind of read. This author also has quite the bomb he delivers at the end that will leave the reader speechless. Received a copy for a honest review.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. I was a little taken back by the child like cover when i first opened the book resulting in a preconceived notion on how the story was going to be. Needless to say i was pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed the story. The fantasy/paranormal elements made the story more interesting. The relationship between the vampire and the werewolf brought a little heat into the story, and the intervening of the wise old dragon added an additional magical feel. Overall fun read.
Sexy werewolves, forbidden trysts with vampires, Native American paranormals, and oh, yeah--that one dude that's a dragon...the Red Wolf sure has a lot on his hands.
What I liked: the interpersonal drama and the pack theatrics. If you're into True Blood or the Sookie Stackhouse novels, I really feel like these Red Wolf novels are going to scratch your itch. Adding a dragon to the mix was really cool, too. The passages from the dragon's perspective were among my favorites. It was interesting that the protagonist was a male, because that's not as common when reading romance. THEREFORE, the reader is spared a bit of the typical female protagonist's angst. The main character was a likable guy.
What wasn't for me: I'm not a romance fan, and there were a lot of "feelins" in this one, darling. I reckon the main character must be a bit of a stud since every gal in town is hot for him, but I don't connect very well to the pathos of storybook romance, so I was out of my comfort zone for those bits. However, I found this book to be every bit as well-written as the best paranormal romances to cross my desk in the past couple of years.
In conclusion, author John Hundley is a competent, enthusiastic author, and his second Red Wolf novel showcases a gift for dialogue. Personally, I'd like to see the characters moving faster through their landscape he's put together for us--but that's just me. I'm giving this book four stars and recommending it to all fans of Alcide, Sookie, Sam Merlotte, and all the gang created by Charlaine Harris. John Hundley is the closest you're going to get to Harris' world of Bon Temps!
The Dragon of Doughton Park (Red Wolf, #2) by John Hundley
Everyone has accepted the Prophecy of the Red Wolf except the Red Wolf himself, that would be Clifford. He and Nicole meet with a Dragon for help in learning more about this Prophecy. What he and Nicole the Omega learn is not really what Clifford had hoped for but it was also help full. Clifford then meets with many wolves of different packs to lead them on a small war against the Vampires. With Clifford seeing (wink wink) a vampire he is even more torn with this prophecy. So with a small group he sets out to bring down a nest of vampires. While on way he finds that they can talk in each others minds. good thing as nothing seems to go right. While driving back a shoot out ensues. Heather is hit with such force that she is knocked off a bridge Clifford jumps the bridge to save her forgetting that Were-Wolves can't swim, they sink. Amazingly they survive and the bond between the two grow. Add Danielle the vampire to this mix and sparks fly as well as Wolf fur.
I really enjoyed book 2! It seemed a much smoother read as if the Author was really in his own groove. Question for Mr. Hundley were is book 3? I need my fix please! This series really is a fantastic read, I really hop more readers give this series a looksie, you won't be disappointed.

The second book in this series moved at a faster pace than the first which helped me get more immersed in the story. I loved the addition of the dragon and I think the different characters perspectives really help one connect with the characters. Roland was up to his old tricks though it was more hampered this time by the pack. Things really escalated between the werewolves and vampires in this one.
I definitely didn't see the twist at the end of the book coming. It's sure to make the third book even more interesting though. I hope I don't ahave to wait much longer to find out how it will play out.
