This true story takes you in from the start and keeps you emotionally invested regardless of your beliefs.
I read this book for the first time about ten years ago on a recommendation from my father and it has always stuck with me. I have since re-read it on several different occasions. And when I need a reminder about the power of forgiveness and just how incredible some humans are, I re-read it again.
I often feel guilty saying this is a "favorite" book of mine when you consider the horrific and sad backstory. The basics are that a set of very doting parents lose their only child, an eighteen-year old by the name of Ted, when he is killed by a drunk driver. The drunk driver's name is Tommy and the story chronicles the steps Ted's parents take towards forgiving Tommy (a major alcoholic from a young age) for the loss of their beloved son. And how, amazingly, Tommy then becomes a huge part of their lives.
It is heart wrenching at times because the pain is there in the written word, and almost tangible. But the beauty of it is that these people had more grace in a single pinky than most of us will have in our lifetime. The lessons are there.
When I am asked about my favorite books- this is always at the top of the list. It is a hard read but worth every second of it.
