The High Rollers are falling apart. Billy is leading them into war against the wishes of Laura, who is intent on living in peace. Unbeknownst to them, one among them holds the cure that could save all mankind, and there are two powerful enemies that want it. Everything has been leading up to this, and the members of this fragile family are going to have to go through hell if they're going to survive.
Today I realized that I mostly write reviews about the books I hated. Maybe I'm too lazy and I only find strength to write something when I'm pissed enough. OR... maybe I think that positive reviews aren't as interesting and entertaining as hate reviews. :-) Anyways... here's a love review for Aaron. :-)
I really like this guy, and I really like his books. He was one of the biggest positive surprises for me during the last two years when I fortunately had the opportunity to read almost 200 books.
I really like zombies and I really wanted to love this sub-genre of horror literature, but my first experiences with it were totally negative. I read a lot of famous zombie books those times and I started to think that the whole sub-genre is useless and unreadable. For example I tried to love Mark Tufo's series, but I couldn't. For a serious zombie book serial it's unreadable. For a comical book serial it's medium enjoyable, or (for me) not funny enough. So it failed to be my big new favorite zombie book series. The more serious ones were even worse. For example there's that "Day by Day Armageddon" trilogy written by some mentally retarded solider or something.... That one was like an awkward diary of a seriously dumb 8 years old child. I don't even remember the writer's name and believe me when I say that I don't even want to! So after many of the worst examples I FINALLY found a good writer in ZOMBIE/POST APOCALYPTIC genre, which is called "Deadlocked"!
I already liked the first short book (it was a novella if my memory serves me well). But the second, book length writing was even better. I loved it! Yesterday I just finished this 6th book in the series and I still want to continue reading them, so I just started the 7th book today morning. Why is it so good or better than other zombie books?
1 - It's scary. Nowadays horror writers seem to forgot the main idea behind the entire horror genre: It should scare the poop out of the reader. If it's not scary then why should we call it a horror book, right? The Deadlocked series is really scary. It's bloody, dark and scary just enough for us (sick minded fans) to love it, but it's not some overdone thing that many writers mistakenly do nowadays. It's not bloody just for the sake of it, or disgusting just to shock the reader. The bloody and disgusting scenes are still reasonable. 2 - These books are suspenseful. Aaron knows how to write suspense which is a great thing. A horror book should be scary and suspenseful. This is why we read them, aren't we? 3 - There aren't too much jokes in the books (I really hate it when a writer is unable to take anything seriously) but when something is funny, then you can really smile or laugh on the jokes. So even the level of being funny is okay in these books which I really appreciate. 4 - And here's the last thing that Aaron does very well: Making his characters lovable and real! I think this is his biggest talent which makes his books special and enjoyable. It's really important to make a character real and believable if you want your reader to sympathize with him/her, otherwise the reader won't be interested in the follow-ups of the story, or won't even be interested in finishing the first book in the series. The characters in Deadlocked are really lovable. They have feelings and we can sympathize with them. We can understand the reasons of their decisions, because in a similar situation we would probably make the same one. I hate surreal and unreal situations in a book that meant to be a serious, believable one, I also find it irritating when the characters make unreal decisions in a believable situation. Until this point (the final scene of the 6th book) Aaron successfully avoided these common mistakes.
Aaron also obviously finds family ties and relations between family members very important. This is why not just his characters are believable but also their families consist of real human beings that act real in hard situations and feel real to the reader.
I would give this book a maximum rating but it wouldn't be fair because I liked the 2nd and 5th books even better. Still it's very good, much better than 90% of the horror books I read nowadays. (and better than 99% of ALL zombie books I've EVER read!)
My first problem with his book or episode was: There are a bit too much characters in the book and there wasn't enough time to tell everyone's story properly with all the details. Some very important characters this time left in the background which I was really sorry. This is not a big fault of the book. Maybe it just should've been longer. :-)
My other (and last) problem with the book: In my opinion there are too much good relationships in this episode. Everyone loves each other. This book needs a bit more negative characters, or not absolutely positive ones. For example: even if the High Rollers are "the good guys" they don't have to be iconic good people. :-) They can have faults in their characters. It would just make them more human and more believable. They can make some bad decisions and they can hate each other a little bit or they can fight sometimes even if they love each other. I don't say that this current book lacks all these. I just could bare a little more of all these, that's all. (I mean: more conflicts between the good guys would've made it more interesting and more real) Otherwise this book was awesome!
Oh man these books just don't let up do they!!!! Just a fantastic series that really does put my heart through the mill with all the ups and downs and incredibly fast pace. Right.... On to part 7 it is then 🧟♂️
Deadlocked 6 finds our characters still reeling from the assault on The Vineyard. Ben and Harrison are severely wounded, and Celeste/Cobra is struggling with Hailey's death. For the most part they're sidelined though, which helps the story reconnect with those characters readers are familiar with from books 1-4. It also helps plot wise because both Celeste and Ben proved themselves to be killing machines that would have made things a lot easier for the High Rollers and their fight against the military organization hunting them. I did find it a bit redundant that since the story switches perspectives that we're reminded of the same events, albeit via different perspectives, a couple times per successive chapter. Deadlocked 6 is a dark chapter for The High Rollers, and we all benefit from it.
Tis a good book, even for those of us who have read many zombie/postapoc/survival stories. I give it.... four stars!! *head bangs* (ouch. Note to self, don't head bang to totally sweet, babe-alicious 80s hair metal guitar solo that plays after every 4 or 5 star rating). QUESTION!! Why do most of the people that write these novels abbreviate their names? JL Bourne, ZA Recht, AR Wise, JP Koolamaccan, JK Vugihnafayce, ST Disnaughtgud, IC Yurweinerberg, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc AND ETC. Okay, this book is okay, okay? Yes. Ayyyyeeeeeeee.
Well done to another well written book. I really liked this book and would actually rate it 4.5 stars. There were some things I wish he would have addressed that he hasn't yet and I am hoping in D7 he will bring them up. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a big zombie lover!
Excellent 'beginning' to Part 2 of AR Wise' zombie apocalypse diary. This story arc is post-apocalyptic, 20 years after the events of the first story line. We reunite with a few characters from the original, while quickly getting invested in new ones.
