When Shirley and Bill set out on a dream trip in the beautiful northwest wilderness to celebrate their 40th anniversary, what develops is a nightmare that has no end. Mysterious pangs turn into a vicious virus that makes its way into Bill's body. Shirley finds comfort through her Savior during the six months of Bill's illness-an illness which eventually takes his life.
After a time, Shirley's heart aches for companionship. Little does she know that living a few miles from her home, a widower mourns the loss of his wife of 32 years. They meet and fall hopelessly in love and their love takes them on a two-year journey of joy and adventure until once again overwhelming heartbreak rocks Shirley's world. This is a story of faith and courage to strengthen your own soul.
Seconds Chances is a true story based on how the author survive becoming a widow and finding love again. I admired how she was able to take over and found love again. Wonderful to bring two families together.
I enjoyed reading the author story of finding love again. The book was fast reading. I read it in one sitting.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. This book review is my own opinion.
Second Chances ... at Life and Love with Hope by author Shirley Quiring Mozena is a book meant to help people going through the death of a loved one. It is a Christian book with emphasis on faith and trusting God.
Author Mozena’s book is written like journal or diary entries. I felt like I was glimpsing a deeply part of her personal life because she writes so transparently. The style is very inviting and caused me to become engaged immediately.
Mozena’s tale is one of love, strength, and faith. She writes of the deep love she had for both of her husbands. The heartache that came with losing her first husband and then her second was staggering, but she found her strength and faith. I have been married over thirty years and cannot imagine life without my husband.
Unfortunately this is a road we all must travel. Saying goodbye to beloved family and friends is devastating, but the author tells how she not only survived but now helps others. It is a very well written book that had me tearing up, nodding my head, and wishing I could sit down to chat over coffee with the brave, extraordinary author.
I highly recommend this for anyone in bereavement. It is a must for church libraries. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my own thoughts.
Having been married to my husband for 27 years I cannot fathom losing not just one husband to death but two. Yet I have witness people in my life marry for a second time after being deeply in love with their first spouse and then marrying for the second time and being deeply in love with that person as well. This book is written as a love story diary. It tells the story of Shirley, a Christian, who deeply loved her first husband who died after 40 years of marriage and six months of a debilitating illness. Then Shirley finds love for a second time and winds up with two years of joy and more heartache of losing a second spouse. While some may not like the diary-like nature of this book, I found it worth reading. Shirley’s story illustrates the power of prayer and God’s love. The turnaround I read about in Bill, her first husband, brought me to tears of joy. Bill discovered the love and salvation of Jesus Christ. Shirley had amazing people to walk the journey of grief and loss with her. She shows through the pages of the book how much she loved both men as well her children (biological, step and through marriage). So if you like reading diary-style books that tell a true story of love, mercy, grief, and second chances, check out this book for yourself. I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.
A very moving and true story of Shirley, who got a second chance at love. Her story is full of love, grief, new beginnings, family and travel. Her first husband Bill was a very active and outdoor type man. They were married 40 years. At age 61 Shirley finds herself a widow for the first time. She lays her heart bare before us all and tells about her emotions and how she copes, with God’s help. The story chronicles her journey of memories and pure survival. After a years time she no longer wants to be alone and on advice of a friend joins an online dating service. Her second attempt brings Blair into her life. They click mightily and a new adventure begins. Follow along as they travel to all kinds of places including South Africa. I enjoyed all the descriptions of the places and scenery. She wrote where I could picture it all and feel like I was right along with them. Come along with her on her personal journey of love, grief and hope. Cry, laugh, and pray. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise. All opinions are my own.
I found Second Chances by Shirley Quiring Mozena to be quite an emotional roller coaster for me. It tells about the author’s life with her husband of forty years and then his sudden passing. When she describes in the pages afterwards, was so heartbreaking to read. I needed my tissues close by as I kept reading. Shirley has to learn how to cope with her loss and live her life alone. Her life is once again changes when she finds love and happiness. I could just feel the love she had for Blair. I loved reading about their adventures. I am giving Second Chances four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who are interested in book’s title, Second Chances, how to overcoming grief and loss, and learning to move on from heart break. I, also, highly recommend for readers to keep that tissue box close by. They are going to need it. I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
In this book you’ll find love and loss in both their immense depths.
Shirley writes a book that shows love after loss and the continued love of God. When all things seem to go wrong, God is the anchor we can hold.
I can’t imagine the heartache of losing a spouse, but I know that second chances are possible. Second Chances is a beautiful but tragic tale, and if you’ve suffered a loss, Shirley’s story might be something to help you see through the dark veil.
Grief is personal and each person has their own path to travel. God will be there with you every step of the way, and I think this book shows that with clarity.
A good well-written read.
I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
My Review I found myself in tears more than once reading this sweet but difficult memoir. What a testimony our author and her family have! In a truly personal style, our author gives us the story of becoming a widow not once, but twice through unexpected health issues. Wow the way our author was just so honest about her pain and how the Lord truly met every need. She cries out in prayer to find the strength and comfort she is lacking through it all. The book reminds me to cherish my husband because we never know when the Lord will call one of us home. This book inspired me to find true fulfillment in the Lord when life is beyond hard. I really recommend this one for those hurting from a recent or long ago loss, or those looking for encouragement from an inspiring testimony.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.
Life Is Full of Second Chances What Was Yours? The genre for this book is listed as “Family and relationships/Death, Grief, Bereavement. I’d call it a memoir. Written almost as a diary of the author’s life over the span of about five years, we learn much of the two very different men she married, what she learned from each of them, and how the Lord blessed her with both easy and difficult marriages.
Saying goodbye to one husband is hard enough, but having to do it back-to-back has to be one of the hardest things a woman can live through, and while Ms. Mozena is raw and real about her pain, her faith shines through. She encouraged me by her trust in the Lord in difficult times.
Still, I have to admit that some parts confused me. I find it difficult to understand why people choose which details they share. Some of the details in this are clearly very important to the author–clothing, food, decor. But aside from a couple of things, they only confused me because I kept waiting for the point to them to show up. Unfortunately, it didn’t.
I’m glad I chose to request a review copy of the book. If I’d known it was a memoir, I wouldn’t have, and I would have missed some encouraging stories. Recommended for people who enjoy memoirs, seasoned romance, and encouragement in the Lord’s goodness even when it seems that He isn’t.
Second Chances" by Shirley Quiring Mozena is a story of love and loss. It is also a story of faith and not giving up on God. This book is a story of a women finding love twice and losing both to death.
Yes, I cried because I keep thinking about the last 5 days of mom's life and I felt the author's sense of loss but I also felt her peace about knowing where Bill and Blair were and that she would see them again. I know losing a husband isn't the same as losing a parent, but grief and loss is something we all experience.
At the end of the book, I was thinking I want to know more about what her life is like now and then I seen where she has written another book and I just have to get it.
This story has definitely shown me that we need to cherish every moment with our loved ones and to show love whenever we get a chance because life is really short and we never know when the chance to love someone is going to be our lasts.
I appreciate the author's honestly in telling her story and showing that even in the trials and heartaches of life, God is in the midst and never leaves us alone.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
Second Chance at Love offers important information for those considering a second marriage. The quizzes at chapter end will provide topics for honest discussions. There are multiple opportunities for disagreements and conflict in a relationship. This book helps the couple consider some of these things before making a life long commitment. God is the center of a healthy, happy marriage and the importance of agreement an compatibility on faith is also coveted. This book was provided through Celebrate Lit for me to read and review.
