Rabbit in a Box is a book of poems about people, places, things, life, events, humor, sadness, and tragedy. Some will find it dark and be startled by it. Some will understand it to be a book about what I have seen in my life. Some will find it to be a confessional. Some will see themselves within the pages. In any event, whether it startles or enlightens, you won't walk away unchanged. I pull no punches. My favorite poem? I change my position every time I read the book but currently it is: LAYS. I hope you enjoy it. Regards, Gordon Kuhn
17th May 2013 Received a free copy of this today as I won this book through GoodReads First Read program (giveaways) I am currently reading another giveaway book but will read on and off in between and review and few poems at a time, thanks for your giveaway. Started reading these and really have to be in the right mood for poetry, I read the first five poems umbrella'd in a section entitled "The Agony and Ecstasy of Writing" it took a couple to get a feel for how the author writes and was worried it wouldn't be my thing but of the first section Overrun was my favourite, just seemed to grasp my attention more. Maybe I finally grasped the thoughts of the author at this point or maybe I just needed a warm up into the book I can't be sure this was the turning point of my first reading of this book. Still feeling a little anxious that this book hadn't grasped me as well as I'd have hoped I continued cautiously into the next section "The Death of Childhood" the title of the section worried me as sounded heavy going but this was my second reprieve of this book and the point where things looked up for me as the reader. It made me look from another perspective maybe the first section didn't grasp me as it was about writing; something I have never been part of in a big way. However, having experience of a friends child's funeral the poem "The Game at Six" hit all the right emotions and made a link with me as the reader. Looking forward to reading more....
6th June 2013 Dipped into this again for a little while this afternoon, it is definitely a book that requires the correct mood at time of reading to appreciate the short story feel of this unique type of poetry book. I confess although I had more time to read I did stop at the section entitled Suicide as this is a subject that brings raw emotions in myself through the loss of a dear friend some years ago and being that I was out in the park with my daughter I didn't want to bring myself to tears in such a public place but I will continue one evening in the week after the children are in bed and I am prepared for the subject matter next up. This book is an acquired taste and my thoughts on the stories / poems have gone up and down during my reading preferring some compared to others, I think those I've liked most have been subjects I could relate to the closest making them easier to read and connect to.
4th July 2013 Have been dipping in and out of this over the past month not bothering to comment as only doing a couple of poems at a time Overall I'm sorry to say it wasn't entirely my sort of thing as more contents bypassed me than those that caught my attention, however that said the poems I did like were very good and overall the book was well written if read by the right person on a similar wavelength to the author for the style of story writing type poetry. I found some of the story poems to be too long taking me out of a poetry mood into a short story mood making the up and down mood for poetry harder to stick with, I am the type of reader that although I read poetry it isn't very often and I really have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy poetry so the story telling elements in this poetry collection went against my mood setting for poetry reading. I'd maybe suggest for the future splitting into two collections short story poems and "normal" poems (hate to use the word normal like that but hopefully you'll understand what I mean without taking offence) A nice collection for the right person unfortunately overall that wasn't me, but thank you for giving me the chance to try
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Receieved it and read it all in an afternoon.
Rabbit in a Box is a collection of poems about life with all its sadness. I receieved this book in the mail today and I started browsing through the poems, I don't normally read poems, but I could not put the book down. There are several poems that really spoke to me as I read the book, especially Rabbit in a Box and The Game at Six, these are listed under the heading of The Death Of Childhood. These 2 poems tell about loss of someone and something that you love. I was all most in tears after reading them. There are several more poems that were lighter than the previous poems that made me laugh out loud. The chapter on Road Rage caught my attention, I have felt just like the poems. There is also a chapter called On Suicide that really touched me and made me think about people I know that have committed sucide, it made me think about the pain and grief these people must have struggled with.
This book is a good read and will speak to you and your emotions. There is something for everyone in the poems contained in this book.
