By day, Brendan Myers is a professor of philosophy at Cegep Heritage College, in Gatineau, Quebec. By night, he composes thought-operas. And sometimes he publishes them.
I started the Fellwater series at the second book (the first book being Fellwater), but I was engrossed by the story and the characters almost immediately. The characters in this series are distinct, rich with depth, and you are left with a sense that they all have a long history that have led them up to this point in the story.
What frustrated me a bit at the mid-way point was that I didn't know who I could trust! Everyone had secrets that were hinted at, but not revealed. Therefore, I started to suspect everyone of being the Bad Guy! The story keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out who will reveal their true nature right until the end.
The writing style is lively and fun and is easy to follow. The editor in me has some criticisms about the grammar issues and odd switching of tenses occasionally, but these minor flaws do not detract from the enjoyment of the story itself. I look forward to reading the next installment!
This was definitely a book you had to read not just skim over the pages. It pulled you in and taught you about a culture of people that live inside the Author's imagination. It was intriguing to cross over from a modern reality into a mystical realm where doors are gateways to other places, wells can tell you who you are and people have feathers instead of hair. This book is really one man's journey dealing with the death of a loved one and finding that it is okay to let go and move on. Full of mystery, drama and even a bit of romance to top off the excellent story line that delves into the deeper mythological side of lore. A definite must read for those who love fantasy with a bit of mystery and romance. I can't wait to see more from this author!
A great sequel to Fellwater, the first book in this series. I couldn't put it down or keep it out of my thoughts. I'm looking forward to the third instalment! A definitive recommendation for anyone that loves fiction and has an interest in mythology and folklore.
