How a stranger's kidney saved my life ...And my brothers too!
An amazing true story that will strengthen your Faith in miracles!!

The author reminds us that God's ways are not our ways and his time is not our time. He states that "it is easy to believe when you know you're not going to sink. But try stepping out of the boat when you can't see the bottom. The safety nets are gone; there is no backup plan. You are walking on faith alone." Troy says he wanted to relate how at death's door, he found God's hope and peace and the reason for it all. We all need to keep on keeping on-and cling to Him in faith.

This is a very readable and powerful book about the author's experience in facing the ups and downs of kidney disease--a trial that, as he states in the first chapter, "would cause me to question who I was, all that I had believed, and God himself." We live through Troy's journey and the emotional and spiritual roller coaster with him, but always we sense God in control of the situation-even when all seems hopeless. I found myself eagerly reading, in suspense, to find out what would happen next and what God would do. Given the subject matter of dealing with a probably fatal illness, the book is not maudlin, depressing or sensationalized. The author merely talks to us as if to friends, sharing something wonderful and awesome that happened to him. He just seems to want us to appreciate how fragile life is and how good God is. He says he hopes we can use some of his discoveries about God's faithfulness in our own traumatic life situations, whatever they may be.

Troy couldn't have imagined what God had in store for all who were part of this story. Hollywood couldn't have scripted it. He humbly encourages everyone reading this book to believe that, no matter what we are facing in life, we can experience the revelation of what God has in store for our lives.

This book will speak to anyone facing challenges larger than themselves, whether it's job loss, financial ruin, family pain, or your own battle with illness. Miracles still happen and there is always "Another Second Chance".

Imagine yourself in your early 20’s, it’s 1992 and, recently married, you discover you have a kidney disease that will be dormant for about 20 years before becoming a threat to your life? Well that’s the beginning of Troy Lewis’ story. His is an inspiring life built on a foundation of faith in God’s plan for his life that becomes a roller coaster ride. That ride leads to questioning what God’s plan really is when the obvious path becomes a detour rather than the one Troy envisioned.

The author invites his reader to share his story in light of their own life challenges, offering them strength in seeing how his own is supported by God leading to two amazing “saves” as suggested by this title, “Another Second Chance.” Yes, its Troy’s story, but in its telling we learn of a “miracle” (don’t want to give away that part to lessen your reading pleasure) that adds a beautiful surprise element to not just Troy’s story, but truly “God’s story” and therein lies the message of this engaging and easy reading book.

Troy, playing the role of Jesus in their local church’s annual Passion play for nine years, finds a strong connection between that and the lifesaving altruistic kidney donation from a stranger that adds the extra dimension to what is almost a common transplant event these days, raising the reading of his book beyond “just another story.” Troy takes his readers on a very open and revealing inner view of life lived in kidney failure as he endures stage 5 kidney failure at the young age of 42. His clear explanation of complex technical topics such as dialysis, fistula, costs, etc. provides an education useful to both patients and families facing kidney transplant. In everyday events that most would call “coincidences” Troy puts the pieces together to paint the fuller picture of a plan offered by a loving God. Too often these are overlooked as we live through the challenges of life and especially life threatening diseases. But then, sometimes He permits us to “see” His plan, allowing that visibility to strengthen our faith just when sometimes we are beginning to lose some of that belief. Bible quotes throughout support the author’s message of Hope, and part of that hope and God’s plan are what led Troy Lewis to reach out to others in writing this beautiful book.

My highest recommendation for this book is that it is one of only a very few that once picked up, I could not put down, finishing it in one day. Yes, an easy fast moving read, but one that carries deep and special inspiring meaning along with its fascinating story, as Troy subtitles it, “God’s story.”

How foolish we humans are-believing we are in control of our lives when that is just not so. How wonderful God is to meet us where we are, hold us up; and then when we realize how futile our efforts are, move in such amazing ways to work all things together for good for his children. The author reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways and his time is not our time. He states that “it is easy to believe when you know you’re not going to sink. But try stepping out of the boat when you can’t see the bottom. The safety nets are gone; there is no backup plan. I highly recommend this inspirational and uplifting book. I received a review copy of the book from the author, but the opinions are solely mine.

This was such an amazing story that can be an inspiration to anyone! To think what Troy had to go through and here I complain when I have a bad day with my RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis).

Troy shares with us how he came to God and then he started having problems with his kidneys. This is a powerful book with many up's and down's. I celebrated when him and his family and friends celebrated. This will be a book I will keep on my Kindle and re-read it from time to time especially when I am feeling down about my health because I know my health could be so much worse. I finished it today while I was getting my six week Remicade IV infusion for my RA. What a way to end this powerful book in the doctor's office hooked up to an IV because I hate getting my infusions because its an all day thing but I won't complain anymore!

Thank you Troy for allowing me the chance to read your book and review it. It has been a blessing and I truly was touched by it.

This book is a rare look at a man's total commitment to God. Even when the way gets dark and there seems to be no hope, he remains faithful and an answer comes in a way he never expected. The book is an excellent read and offers the reader a rare insight into a disease many of us have never heard of (Iga Nephropathy). When the author received his diagnosis he was young and busy raising a family. When it hit hard he wasn't ready. Although his brother was a match for a kidney, there was a problem. Troy Lewis depended on God to provide the answer and He did - in the form of a stranger who offered a kidney and wanted nothing in return. This is a poignant story of love and unwavering faith. A good read for everyone!

Another Second Chance....a true life story of a man with the "on time" touch of God on his life. Sometimes we wonder why things happen. Why we have to face certain situations. But what we need to remember is that God has a plan, it's perfect, and always on time! This story will help you remember that, and remind you that even though we don't understand things, they are for a purpose. Another Second Chance brought me to tears, made me laugh, tugged at my heart, and inspired me all at the same time. I'm so thankful I was able to read this life changing story.

At first I just want to let author Troy Lewis know that I am sorry for not getting to his book faster than I did due to other obligations. But I really wished that I had. With that being said... "What an awesome chance to read about lives being changed by Gods wonderful Love and Grace!"

Everyone has trials to go thru in this life, and this is a well written book showing how God has a plan for each one of us, even in our frustrations of not getting our way. I am well aware that I think my plan is best, but God shows us in this book that our plan is not necessarily in His plan. Very motivational, and more miracles will occur as a result of people reading this book.

God is ALWAYS in the miracle business.

When I read this book, I knew from the start that it was going to become a favorite of mine. Whenever I have doubts about when God is going to do something on MY timetable, HE shows its not me, but HIM that controls my life. That's how this book is. Please, please do yourself a favor and read this book. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

In 1992, the author’s first child was born. Although a very healthy 24 years old at the time, he decided that he should do the responsible thing and purchase health insurance. Unexpectedly, there was protein in his urine- a sign of kidney disease. A nephrologist diagnosed his problem as Iga Nephropathy (Berger’s disease), a very rare disease. 80% of the people with it live their lives symptom free; the other 20% decline abruptly around age 40 and go into kidney failure. Knowing this, Lewis had checkups to keep track of his kidney health, and sure enough, around age 40, his kidneys started shutting down. Over the next few years, he progressed into end stage renal disease and required dialysis.

Very involved in his church, Lewis believes that this is God’s plan for him, and that he should just trust. And trust he does. As with anyone with a severe illness, he has a lot of ups and downs. Papers aren’t filed on time with the transplant coordinators, his brothers turn out not to be suitable donors, dialysis treatments cause his blood pressure to climb to dangerous levels. In the end, though, a series of events and a group called the Alliance for Paired Donation, gets him his needed kidney – and saves his brother’s life.

Lewis lays this at the feet of God, pointing out that his brother was a minister, his own donor was a minister, and that he himself had played Jesus in the church pageant for a number of years. Personally, I see it as a lot of good people doing the right thing- and going above and beyond that in several cases. His wife managed progress through the transplant program, making sure every paper was where it needed to be. He was very proactive in his own care. I’m happy that he had his faith, and that of his family and friends, to help him through this, but it was also very important that he helped himself. The book is decently well written and reads as if the author was telling you the story in person. If you’re looking for medical detail, this isn’t the book you want, though.

I couldn't stop reading, wanting to find out what was going to happen. I cringed at hard moments and really got into the book. The writing was well done and I was able to read the book while painting a picture in my head of what was going on. I enjoyed the book and loved to see God's work in the author's life.

I really enjoyed reading Troy's experiences with kidney failure. My father has went through years of dialysis, and 2 kidney transplants. So many of the emotions the author speaks of, I was able to connect to in so many ways. The highs and the lows pulled at my memories, and I felt as if I were right there with the author many times. It's amazing to see God's work through it all!!!
