For the first time ever - a comprehensive guide for using the McGuffey Readers. Includes general helps for teaching reading and specific ideas for each lesson. Not too little, not too much, but just right. Please This Parent-Techer Guide has been written Expressly for Mott Media's republication of the 1830's McGuffey Readers.
Dr. Ruth Beechick spent a lifetime teaching and studying how people learn. She taught in Washington state, Alaska, Arizona and in several colleges and seminaries in other states. She also spent thirteen years at a publishing company writing curriculum for churches. In "retirement" she wrote for the homeschool movement. Her degrees are A.B. from Seattle Pacific University, M.A.Ed. and Ed.D. from Arizona State University.
Written for teachers/parents who want to use these readers to instruct their students. Ruth Beechick breaks down the 19th century objectives into modern terms. For example, she explains which grade levels these readers best correspond to and for which purpose. Each reader was designed to be read slowly and thoroughly for mastery. Thus, each reader corresponds to 2 to 4 different grade levels. The precise time frame will be different for each student. Beechick also provides lesson plans for each reading selection.
I read this by skimming but very much enjoyed it. It taught me things I've learned through teaching three kids to read. Very thorough description of teaching reading, methods, and rules.
