Sweet story of a lonely little girl who befriends an odd looking shelter dog. The illustrations by the author are just lovely, and the whole book has a marvelous European feel to it.

'Cherry Sullivan prefers reading books to playing with the other children in her class.'

Substitute the name 'Cherry' with 'Bonnie' and that's my life story. :)

Cherry is a little plump and the other kids at school make fun of her but she remains quiet, never saying anything anything in response to their cruel words. She helps her father out at his job at the animal shelter after school which is where she discovers a wrinkly little dog she names Olive. The two become fast friends and when the same girls that pick on her at school start making fun of Olive, she finally finds the courage to stand up to them.

Very cute story with beautiful illustrations, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Benjamin Lacombe.

Cherry Sullivan is a very shy girl and keeps to herself most of the time. When she’s not engrossed in a book, she’s very lonely. That is, until she forms an attachment to a dog at the animal shelter where her father works. Things don’t turn out as Cherry hopes, but possibly even better than she imagined.
The illustrations are absolutely fabulous, and if you look closely, you’ll see at least one hint at some other work this author/illustrator has done. Cherry is not overjoyed by much, but the dog she names Olive brings joy to her life. Cherry’s eyes seem to look right into your soul as you read this book. This is a heartfelt, touching story that isn’t gushing.
This is book more suitable for elementary students, rather than preschoolers.

Adorable, yet bittersweet tale of a young girl who doesn't fit because of her name "Cerise", her weight, being motherless.
Benjamin Lacombe succeeded in showing the loneliness and difference of Cerise through amazing illustrations the details like the books chosen to fill Cerise's library, her over sized pullover everything built up to Cerise finding the strength to open herself up and find friendship and inner strength she didn't know she had.
Benjamin Lacombe is in his mid-twenties, an amazing illustrator, writer, over all artist. Well worth discovering. Next on my list : Généalogie d'une sorcière.

Cherry is less than thrilled with her current existence. Her mother has left.. She is ridiculed (likely for her size) by classmates at school. She lives alone with her father who works at the animal shelter. One day at her father's work, she discovers a "wrinkly" shar-pei dog and is immediately drawn to him and names him Olive. They become fast friends, though her father warns her that she should not become attached to the dog in case his owner comes to claim him. Cherry's affection for Olive ~ with whom she can relate because of his appearance ~ is fast and deeply connected. Her dad says she can keep Olive if no one comes to claim him within 30 days. And of course, on the 30th day...

The rich color used to illuminate the story's (and Cherry's) mood heightens with dramatic effect.

This beautiful book begins with a premise that many of us Goodreaders might have identified with as children.

Cherry Sullivan prefers reading books to playing with the other children in her class. They make fun of her for being plump, and they are not nearly as entertaining as the adventures she reads about. Though she's shy and keeps to herself, Cherry secretly longs for a friend.

Soon, Cherry discovers a plump-and-shy dog, naming her Olive.

This friendship, and events that follow, prompt Cherry to grow... and not only grow in her imagination but also in the real world.

FIVE STARS of tender inspiration! Thank you, author and illustrator Benjamin Lacombe.

This book just felt so...sad! The illustrations were sad. The text was sad. The ENDING even felt sad...although I'm not sure it was supposed to. I felt like there was something here that I missed. she's lonely and a bit plump and for some reason hates cherries. Because...plot. I don't know. A lot of what happened here didn't feel quite right to me. Oh, well. it happens. Sometimes a book just doesn't resonate.

My 4-year old picked this at the library, and it’s a good story. It’s a little dark, but life isn’t all roses and rainbows. This book could be helpful for a kid who wants to keep a pet, but can’t, or that is having trouble making friends.

My little one was completely captivated by this book. And because I myself am an introvert and dog lover, this book struck a special chord with me. I could totally relate.
