With more than seven million copies sold worldwide, and translated into over forty languages, Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series is an international phenomenon. Detective Harry Hole is a genuine a handsome loner, an alcoholic and workaholic who is tormented in his personal life even as he is revered by his colleagues for his unwavering sense of justice and proven police instincts. Harry’s self-governing, anti-authoritarian style has driven his superior officer at the crime squad in Oslo to call him “the best investigator in the department and the worst public servant.” First-class thrillers with high voltage suspense and complex plotting, The Snowman, The Leopard and Phantom are fascinating journeys into the world of this singular character and the dark criminal minds he pursues to the very limits of his sanity, in Oslo and beyond.

I really wish that each of Jo Nesbo's books respecting Harry Hole could be listed individually on Good reads...I read The Leopard first, in late 2013 and I was hooked even though I was in the middle of the series. I read The Cockroach, billed as an early Harry Hole book and I was feeling a bit adrift as it seemed that I was reading about someone very different than the Hole outlined in The Leopard. I then read The Snowman and I finally understood some of the problems Hole was dealing with in The Leopard but I feel I am still a bit in the dark as to how he got to where he is in this book from the guy in The Cockroach. I just finished Phantom the other day and again, I was frustrated as it's clear that Harry has changed as a result of what has happened in earlier books but I seem to be missing a whole chunk of his life that would explain why he was living in Hong Kong and abstaining from drink, his former nemesis in Phantom....I like the writing style and I like the character a lot. I have had to pull up maps of Norway and of Oslo to get a feel for the locations described in the books as I have never been there. I was glad there was a map in Phantom as it helped me to orient myself within the city.
I want to get all of the Harry Hole books and read them in sequence sometime as I want to get a better feel for why Harry does some things. I want to know more about his relationship with Rakel and her son Oleg. Not that each book isn't a great read but I feel like I am missing huge chunks of the story that might explain the motivation of some of the characters, not just Harry.
