Teens and adults alike will love this new series! It is not a peaceful time in the Four Kingdoms. War is imminent, but all fear the coming of the human child, whose arrival, it is foretold, will aid in the resurrection of the terrible Dark Lord Coriol, a being with the power to destroy them all. Nothing extraordinary has ever happened to Evelyn Leighton. That is, until the day she turns seventeen and is transported through a Monet painting into a fantastical world where humans are thought to be extinct. To stop an ancient prophecy from coming true and save the world she has learned to call home, Evelyn must set out on a quest to find a legendary weapon: The Sign of the Four. Reluctantly, she accepts the aid of Jerris, an enigmatic, irresistibly attractive male descendant of the Water Kingdom with sapphire eyes as dark as his past. With her life on the line, Evelyn finds herself battling more than vicious trolls and mythical lion warriors. She must also battle her own heart;a battle she cannot afford to lose.
I love love loved this book! I loved the world (it kind of reminded me of the Narnia books and Lord of the Rings but with a fresh spin). The plot is unlike anything I've read, which is kind of hard to come by these days. It has good twists, filled with magic, action and even history! It was really cool. My favorite aspect of the book was the development of the relationship between Evelyn and Jerris! I haven't been this excited about a relationship between two characters since Twilight... but Evelyn is a stronger heroine with a sword. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes YA Fantasy. Can't wait for the second book!!!!
I have to admit, when I began reading it, it was a little iffy. I didn't really like Alice in Wonderland much, and this seemed to have close similarities. BOY WAS I WRONG
Sure, Evelyn is transported to a different world and is greeted by talking fish and then there's trees that grow cake and chocolate (not the cacao bean) that will kill you if you take anything, but that is where the similarities stop.
The moment I was hooked was when Jerris is introduced into the book. Badass glowing blue sword? Yes please.
So this book is told in 3rd person omniscient, so we are able to read the minds of other characters, but mainly focus on one sole character, but in this book, there are two characters that are the main focus. Jerris and Evelyn. Regardless if it is Objective omniscient, 3rd person omniscient, limited omniscient, or whatever, writing in omniscient point of view is hard because it is easy to mix up the tenses. But Sofia surprised me.
Being a first time indie author, she has done a professional job. There were not many errors, and she did not confuse the tenses. She remained in past tense the whole time. Amazing. But one thing about many authors that I've noticed is that they don't focus too much on descriptive and creative writing, and put their effort all on plot. Sofia did an outstanding job on both. In the fantasy genre, you really want to get a picture of the scenery, and I was awe-struck. The universe Sofia has created is absolutely stunning and the way she describes the scenery or objects is quite amazing. And it's amazing that even with all this creative writing and descriptions, she still did not take the focus away from the plotline, instead she made the descriptions compliment the plotline and add all the more magic to the words.
Evelyn: She is a dynamic character. In the beginning, she is antisocial, curious, stubborn, and pretty much a hindrance to others (as you will find out) But through her journey, and after being trained by Ferox, Falco, and Jerris, she starts developing and starts becoming more independent. But the exact moment she completely changed is when she returns from her trip to the Lake of Mist. She returns as a strong, brave, selfless, resourceful, determined, but still stubborn woman who trusts her instincts and accepts her feelings.
Jerris: He is a protagonist as well, because the book focuses on both Evelyn and Jerris independently, even though we also hear the other character's thoughts, we mostly focus on the surroundings of Evelyn and Jerris. So Jerris has a dark past and a side of him that's equally as dark. He is after is brother's killer. Okay. That's about it, the rest are just details. But considering that Jerris is one of the two main characters, I think he should have gotten a more developed back story. Like maybe a prologue in Jerris's point of view that gives the reason WHY exactly he was going to the Land of Nowhere, or what he was doing when he felt the hunch to go there. SO Jerris is an asshole, at first. He trusts nobody and has always worked alone and been alone and he is fine with that. And once she meets Evelyn, he cannot stand her. But as they travel together and spend time together, he starts to soften up. But he is determined to fight it. Determined to not let any attachments grow. But there's something about her that he can't resist. Jerris is also a dynamic character, but unlike with Evelyn, I can't really pinpoint where Jerris changed completely. In the end of the book, he finally let someone in his heart. He had to. Evelyn melted the stony barriers and warmed his lonely heart. And he doesn't fight what he feels anymore. He has given into love and he will fight for her.
The Relationship between Jerris and Evelyn is SO SLOW!!! I mean i was screaming the whole time. JUST KISS HER!!!!! DON'T CHICKEN OUT! But you know what? It is perfect.
In many books there is the basic outline of :
special boy/girl meets super hot girl/boy. They work together or are fated to meet or something, and they have an insta-connection and they are shy but warm up to each other an give in to their desires to each other's bodies. And they fall in love and with the power of love they fight together and win. That is cheesy, but cheesy doesn't mean bad (sometimes you gotta give people what they want).
Sofia here, made the romance different. There was no insta-connection. But the attraction was there. And both of them fought their feelings about each other tooth and neck the whole time. They argued a lot and fought with each other and hated each other.
But as they spent more time with each other and fight with alongside/against each other. They bonded. Through their mutual experiences they grew closer. And their relationship was slow to develop. It developed naturally. Nothing forced. and Finally at like 87% they kiss. But it is not until the end of the book where they give in and let things just happen. And their love is true and stands on a strong foundation.
I loved the concept of Ora and talking animals (or super smart animals in Leif's case). It was a beautiful fantasy. I can see this book becoming a classic, I really do. It's got so many literary elements and is very well done. Great use of advanced vocabulary (but not too advanced to make the reader go WTF?), and breathtaking descriptions. Likable characters too.
Now the ending. Oh, the ending. It is so sweet and beautiful it gives me so many FEELS!! IT doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but you do know that this is not a standalone book because Evelyn and the gang still have a few things to take care of, like stop the destruction of the whole world and all that, but it solves all the major questions and conflicts this book has. We are given closure, while still looking forward to the sequel. WHICH I TOTALLY CAN'T WAIT FOR!
This book has exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this book to absolutely anybody. Romance, action/adventure, fantasy, Young Adult, Paranormal? lovers. It is just beautifully well done.
Congratulations Sofia Malamas, you've written yourself a damn good book.
A magical adventure to a world filled with wonder and danger, at first I was reminded a bit of Alice and Wonderland but it is different in the character development of the main character Evelyn. The one thing that stood out from this book from others of its genre was the POVs. The story is told in 3rd person from the main character but also a bit from the other characters. Although instead of confusion it flowed pretty well. A quest story through and through with a worthy main character I enjoyed this story and I am interested in seeing where it goes in further books.
I won this book in the giveaways and this book is exactly why I enter these giveaways. I love the fantasy genre and the way that Malamas puts her own spin on the genre. I feel like its a little bit Narnia and a little bit Alice in Wonderland but it's original enough to be no real comparison. The world is wonderful and full of exciting characters and creatures but the relationship between Evelyn and Jerris is my favorite part, a little bit Twilight ish, but very fun and worth the wait.
I got a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
3.5 stars
I love fantasy and what attracted me to this book was mention of the Monet painting in the summary.
The story is about Evelyn, a quiet girl who feels like she doesn't belong anywhere, being transported into a different world on her seventeenth birthday. She meets Jerris, a brooding boy who comes out of nowhere and tells her that he will accompany her to wherever she needs to go in the new land she is in. Evelyn discovers she plays an important role in the peace between the Four Kingdoms and she sets out to find answers to who she is, why she is there, and what she is supposed to do. She has her doubts and anxieties about the world she is in but eventually, she feels the sense of belonging she has always hoped for.
The world building in the story was sufficient for me to have a grasp of the technicalities of life in the Four Kingdoms but I felt that it lacked a pull for me to actually be excited about what was happening there. The use of the four elements as the four separate kingdoms was good for me but nothing stood out completely.
I like how Evelyn approached her experience of being pulled out from her reality and being planted into a completely fantastic and bizarre one with apprehension and hesitation. I also like how her want to find somewhere to belong in is a very relatable desire for a teenage protagonist. I like how she didn't portray a weak and whiny protagonist because when the part came for her to train and become a warrior, she would always push herself to be good enough to face the challenge she was about to face. In line with this, I like how she was also hesitant to instantly let herself fall head over heels with Jerris, who is like every's girl dream guy with his mysterious demeanor and warrior hotness.
I had a few problems with the pacing of the story because it seemed to progress slowly for most of the novel. I know fantasy novels entail a lot of world building and a lot of writing space is alloted for it but even when Evelyn and Jerris were already done facing their first foes and were still trekking a dangerous road to get to Fangora, I didn't feel any pull that was strong enough to compel me to be completely immersed in their adventures and struggles. There were some aspects of the world of the Four Kingdoms that still confused me. It seemed like the Four Kingdoms were still tied to the human world in some way because they had mentions of Eve and some Biblical references to the garden of Eden and there were also references to Persephone. So my question is, why would a world so completely different from ours know about our legends and folklore and have entities in their world that exist as references to these concepts that don't even belong in their world? Where does Eden and Eve and Greek mythology fall into the mythos of this world? I'm sure the concept of why the Onyx Bridge is tied to a Monet painting will be explained in the latter novels. The author wasn't able to explain how the connection between our world and theirs exists which was why the world of the Four Kingdoms still wasn't completely believable for me.
As for the conflict of the story, I understood that Evelyn had to accept her part in the prophecy but the main question of "why her??" still wasn't answered by the end of the book.
I had some good fun reading about Evelyn and Jerris' relationship. I liked how both of them were aware that their well-guarded walls were being slowly torn down by the other. I like how Jerris' soft side came out because of Evelyn. I like how Evelyn stands her ground and reminds Jerris that she's perfectly capable of defending herself and even if he protests, she still knows her capabilities and doesn't go all damsel in distress around him.
Overall, I think the book had a good vision but something got lost in the execution. I would still recommend it to people who like reading about a heroine who is strong and wants to belong somewhere.
What a page turner!!! One of those just-one-more-chapter books which keeps you up at night until the wee hours. Can't wait for the next book in this fantasy series!!!
A free copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
The beginning of the story to me was a little confusing. When Evelyn first woke up in a white chamber I thought she woke up from a dream, but then she woke up again to find herself in her bedroom. I felt the transition there didn't flow for me. I also thought it was a little confusing when she was twirling around with her dress that she gets sucked into a painting. How did that happen? Did someone summon her or was it just a random thing? And why now? After that things started to pick up and make sense.
What I love about the story were the characters. Yes the characters!!! I admired the way Evelyn handled her situation with maturity. For example, she was wary of the strangers she just met especially Jerris. She didn't trust him right away. Also that she asked many questions about this new world as much as she could and explored her surroundings like a person should when they find out there in a foreign place. I also liked the fact that even though she's nice, she's an assertive person capable of standing up for herself. Whenever Jerris was being rude to her, she didn't let him push her around, instead she argued back. I thought the banter between them was cute and amusing. Not to mention there relationship, I love how they went from strangers who couldn't stand each other to friends who supported and cared for one another. The development wasn't rushed or slow and what made it more realistic was, along the journey they encouraged one another.
Now Jerris, blue eyes, dark hair, 6 feet of pure muscle and a badass with a soft side. Sigh... only in books. This book was also in his perspective and I'm very glad because we get to read what he's thinking, his inner conflict, and his growing fondness for Evelyn. The action in this book was fast paced and the four kingdoms with a connection to a specific element was interesting. We also get a variety of creatures such as trolls, dwarves, and unicorns. Although this book kept me flipping pages I felt that there were some parts missing and more that needed to be added like Lord Corriol. I felt that we needed more details about him and how dangerous he was. What he could do once he infiltrated the four kingdoms. Also there weren't very many details as to why a war was imminent. Except for the fact that there is prejudice all around and a growing darkness. It wasn't described enough.
The only thing that bothered me was that Evelyn didn't miss her Uncle as much as I thought she would and that we didn't get a longer glimpse of her mundane life. Overall I thought this book was great and I can't wait to read the next one. Especially since I have a feeling we'll get to visit and learn more about the other kingdoms.
(I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.)
What a fantastic story! I knew I was going to be in for a long and fun adventure right after that first chapter was finished! The world building in this story is so cool, and I love that there are different elemental kingdoms to feed my imagination. I wanted Evelyn to see them all.~
The characters definitely play a huge part in making this story as awesome as it is. I loved every single one of them – even the weird talking fish creatures at the beginning! Evelyn and Jerris, the main characters, are especially well done. They're SO FUNNY together, and I like how Jerris gets annoyed whenever Evelyn doesn't stop taking. As soon as he pointed that out the first time, I started to laugh, because it was so true! From there on, I couldn't help but notice how chatty she actually was. Another thing that I liked about their relationship was how their feelings slowly developed for each other, and that it wasn't an instant love kind of thing. When they first met, they didn't exactly... Get along. I normally hate constant bickering and teasing in a relationship, but why is it that when Evelyn and Jerris do it, it’s so entertaining? Man, those two are perfect together... It’s been awhile since I've read a good pairing like that, and I wanted to see more and more from them.
Falco was a pretty cool character too, and I could see him being a potential love interest. I’m not sure how Evelyn can put up with Ferox though, if she were my teacher, I’d be screaming throughout her lessons.
Another character that I really liked was Arathos, the griffin. If I were to have a griffin companion, I’d want one like him! ... But when
Oh yeah, Evelyn’s parents are awful, especially her dad. -_-; I wish I could have seen more from her uncle though, as he was like the only person who cared about her in her own world.
Another random thing that I liked about The Onyx Bridge was how it shares Jerris's point of view too, and not just Evelyn’s. I like seeing every character's side of the story besides just one, so that was nice and unexpected.~
Besides the awesome characters to enjoy and drool over, there's a lot of exciting things that happened plot wise too. I have many favorite scenes, but I think the one with the Devourer was one of my favorites. Despite being a prophesy story, I couldn't predict what would happen correctly either – especially the last chapters. Right when I though the plot was over, more excitement came.
Anyhoo, The Onyx Bridge was a blast to read. If you're a lover of fantasy, this is a good book to check out. :)
When I started reading, the plot seemed rushed, the dialogue unrealistic, and the characters flimsy. So you’re probably asking yourself, “Why in the world did she give this book four stars?” It gets so much better.
Once I finally made it out of the first 100 pages, this book got infinitely better. I started to like the main character Evelyn (not love, but like). She was a bit whiney at times, but she showed so much character development throughout the book that by the end I started to cheer for her every time she did something right. I really need to stop talking to my fictional characters…. (I may have a problem)
Jerris was…. well… semi-cheesy, in an adorable sarcastic way. He was like a deadly mysterious killing-machine puppy dog. Really. The romance between him and Evelyn was so slow that I actually started doubting that they would get together by the end of this book, but they did and it was just made me smile. When authors try to shove a romance in your face and put flashing red lights all around it, I start getting cranky. There was absolutely no instalove and I almost started singing the Hallelujah Chorus. Oh too perfect.
So, while I had a rocky start with both of them, by the end of the book I was shipping Jeveyln pretty hard.
However, all was not perfect in character land. Other characters showed up that made me want to bang my head against the wall. Ferox and Falco, the sister-brother yoda wannabes.
Falco was better than Ferox. At least he managed to get out some witty dialogue and not sound completely ridiculous all the time, but I just couldn’t take Ferox seriously. She tried to be a stern ninja master all the time and none of her dialogue came off as very authentic. I just started laughing at her serious lines.
Anyways, on a more positive note, the world building in this book was beautifully done. I could picture everything and their world seemed kind of like a Lord of the Rings/Eragon/Greek Myths/Fey world mashup. The world that Malamas created was totally unique. She also added in some Latin names for things which made me oh so happy. That might just be because I’m a Latin nerd, but I absolutely love it when authors throw in a little tad of dead language to make things sound fancy.
So, as a whole, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes YA fantasy. If you are discouraged by the first 100 pages or so, just keep reading. You won’t be disappointed.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
CONTAINS SPOILERS.
THE SIGN OF THE FOUR - Book One: THE ONYX BRIDGE by SOFIA MALAMAS
Rating: I give the book 4.5 of 5 stars
I loved this book. It takes you into a world full of wonder, magic and danger. I didn’t want to end reading it, not because it was bad but because it was so good it would mean to end it and leave this wonderful world full of adventure and love. The world SOFIA MALAMAS created is full of color and magic. Creatures of fairytales become real and the elements rule this world. A world in which danger lurks around every corner and everyone could be an enemy trying to get his fingers on Evelyn, the destined one to save or destroy this world.
I also loved all the characters. But specially Evelyn and Jerris as well as Arathos, Lephelaus, Duncan and his family. Evelyn is not your ordinary girl, even though she thinks she is. She lacks self-esteem and thinks she can not really do anything right but at the same time she hates to be useless and tries to do everything on her own. But with time, and Jerris's and Ferox's help, she begins to see what she is capable of and which power lurks inside of her. Her personality evolves trough the story and even thought she doesn’t know who she really is, she tries her best to success and do what is right, overcoming her fears. And she certainly isn’t fearless but that makes her real. Jerris is a sexy mystery. He is funny, witty and bold but also strong and stubborn. He always has a comment to give and they seldomly are nice ones but I liked him from the start. He made me smile and laugh. His life still remains a mystery but I hope to know more about him, as well of the remaining kingdoms, in the next book. Evelyn and Jerris together are adorable. There are scenes were I was inwardly screaming for Jerris to kiss Evelyn. It was infuriating but fun.
The only thing that I didn’t like that much was the beginning, because it was a bit confusing with the flashbacks. I didn’t know when what was happening. The whole thing with Coriol and King Garrick and then Evelyn being in nowhere and then again in her room, was really confusing but after some time, as you keep reading, you kind of understand all. Also I always kept confusing what an Artensia and an Artimesian was. But that is all I can complain about.
The whole book left me fascinated. And I hope to read more about those two. They are so charming and funny together. I want to know what incredible adventures and danger Evelyn and Jerris will face in the future.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for honest review. As an avid reader of YA with few exceptions, I don't really encounter high fantasy that often. Before starting this book, I felt like all I'd been reading was vampires and werewolves. I mean, I still love vampires and werewolves, but I needed a break. Reading The Onyx Bridge was like finding something I didn't know I was looking for. Unicorns, dwarfs, griffins, fairies, and talking animals?? Where has this book been all my life?! I'm one of those people that judge books solely based on the MC. If I find the main character annoying in any way, no matter how interesting and creative the plotline is, I will most likely end up disliking the book. Luckily, I didn't have that issue with this book. I love Evelyn. She's extremely relatable, witty, and an overall strong lead character. The character development that occurs just over the course of this first book is awesome! Although Evelyn isn't exactly weak in the beginning, she does become noticeably stronger by the end of the book. I can't wait to see how she grows over the course of the series! Evelyn isn't the only character I enjoyed reading about. Jerris is the perfect mixture of mysterious back story and sensitive personality masked by an arrogant front. If Evelyn doesn't want him, I'll have him! He definitely made my "fictional boyfriends" shelf! As for the cover; it's absolutely stunning! I'm tempted to buy a hard copy just so I can stare at the cover... There is only one thing that I can think of that may prevent this book from becoming the next bestseller: the POVs. The story is told from 3rd person POV from Evelyn's perspective, but it randomly adds thoughts and feelings from other characters. This isn't very common in YA, but while there are no clear boundaries between different characters' POVs, I didn't find it confusing at all. I actually liked being able to have insight into other characters, especially Jerris. I hope that readers are able to overlook this difference and recognize the true potential in this book. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. 5 stars is simply not enough! I can't wait to "gently persuade" all my friends to get it *evil laughter*. I also can't wait for the next books in the series; I'm excited to see what happens next. I think this will be one of my new favorite series!
Sofia Malamas has a new fan! Her debut novel, The Onyx Bridge, was a pure joy to read!
Sofia painted such miraculous worlds with her prose. There were a few points, mostly towards the beginning, which things began to drag, just a little, BUT before you realize it you will be flipping page wanting more. If you enjoy this read half as much as I did, you’ll dread seeing the pages fade to the left. I didn’t want it to end.
The different lands our heroine, Evelyn, is forced into are fantastical, magical places. I can honestly think of no better description than painted; simply wonderful. I felt so drawn into this world. It was all so real in my mind. Take ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Chronicles of Narrnia’, and ‘Neverending Story’ add a dash of ‘The Secret Garden’ then have the whole thing narrated by John Hurt - don’t ask why but it was his voice in my head for all the narratives, and it fit perfectly! – That’s the level of depth Sofia’s world will drag you in.
The characters are truly great! Evelyn is by no means a static character. We get the excitement of watching her learn and grow from “the girl from Surrey” into a “magical eye person”….read it and you’ll get it. Jerris, our bastard hero, is, at least to me, a relatable guy; haunted by his past, unsure about his future, scared and horribly annoyed by the woman in his life. Many of the side characters are amusing in their moments. The interactions between Jerris and….well, and anyone, are highly entertaining!
The long and the short of it:
I loved this book! It has been a long time since I’ve been so drawn into by a new series. Sign of the Four has done it! So worth the investment, in fact, I bought a printed copy, moments after finishing reading the digital. I had to have this book on my shelf. I simply can’t wait to read the rest of the series as they are released.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank Sofia Malamas, author of The Onyx Bridge for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.
I really liked this book. The plot is well thought and the story line is unique, the characters are well developed and the descriptive and rich writing style of the author really breathed life in to the plot and the characters as well making them flourish through out the story.
Being a part of Evelyn's journey through a fantasy world was a great pleasure and the world that the author brought to her readers was remarkable and the vivid description of each and every detail made it believable.
The building of a true and romantic relationship between Evelyn and Jerris spiced up the story and made the read intriguing.
Revelation of secrets, tests of long believed truths, quest through fantasy worlds, fulfilment of phrophecies and much more will grab your interest and will take you to the world where myth come true.
Evelyn is strong, confident and independant and worthy of the sword that will make her win the battle. Jerris is just like a boy of whom the girls dream at night with a touch of arrogance and pride.
A great and must read for ya all. Action, romance, suspense which will make you gasp and you will seat at the edge of your seat gripping this novel till it ends.
Join the ride, share the tension and as the story progresses you will be surprised to witness Evelyn's journey and where the author will take you!
(I was given this book in exchange for an honest review)
When I started the Onyx Bridge I was very confused. I had to read the first couple of chapters twice to get a really good understand of it. Unfortunately I didn't get addicted to it, I couldn't find this thing that would keep me interested all throughout Evelyn journey. However I believe this is because I wasn't in the right mind when I read this book. In fact I think many would enjoy this adventure.
The story in itself is quite similar to other fantasy books but the world in which it happens is so interesting that you won't mind much about it. Despite having some issues visualizing the whole world, I found it nice that it was based on the four elements. I was particularly curious about the creatures and the descendant history grabbed my attention.
Character wise, I liked Evelyn. She definitely speak too much but who wouldn't when finding themselves in her situation. I also appreciated how she didn't trust everyone right at the beginning but didn't need to be all aggressive about it. She had great interaction with Jerris and I was thankful to see that his good looks didn't make her trust him more than if it was someone else.
Despite my personal reaction over the book I truly believe that The Onyx Bridge has a lot of potential as a fantasy novel and that many will enjoy it so I definitely recommend everyone to give it a try.
A free copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I am having a hard time organizing my thoughts on this one, so I am going to do a slightly different layout with this review.
Plot:Hmmm. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't my favorite fantasy either. It had similar elements of other fantasy novels I've read, which may have hindered me from enjoying it more. Not to say the plot was a ripoff; it wasn't, not at all. It just wasn't as original as I was expecting.
Characters JERRIS!!!! Loved him. (I'll admit, I tend to fall for the 'bad boys'.) The author did a great job of bringing out the softer side of him, and developing his relationship with Evelyn.
Evelyn was an okay character. She didn't get on my nerves or anything; she just wasn't my favorite character in the world. Like I said before, I liked her and Jerris' relationship.
So, if you are looking for a Fantasy book that you might enjoy, don't overlook this one. I realize I'm extremely picky, and I am in the minority with this one; most people absolutely loved it!
This book wasn’t for me. I didn’t really get some of the descriptions of the creatures in this new world. Evelyn’s love interest is suppose to be irresistible, but when we are first introduced to him he doesn’t seem attractive at all. A lot of the characters in the new world are likened to different animals and I then couldn’t picture them as anything but animals not different creatures with a likeness to a certain animal. I also had a hard time staying interested in the story, I never really felt like they were getting anywhere. small events happened that were interesting but I never felt like they were moving towards an overall plot. I also didn’t think it left me wanting anymore in following books, there wasn’t an overall driving factor that made me want more.
I love this book! It is a great first debut novel for this author, and I am a fan. I loved the depth of the characters, the description of the world. The author did a great job of laying out Evelyn’s character in the real world before she travels to the new land.
Jerris is by far my favorite character; he has many layers to his personality. I had to laugh out loud when the name of the horse was finally revealed as he has the same name as my roommate, Leif. This story is thoroughly entertaining and a great novel for teens and adults who love adventure.
I loved this book so much I could not put it down. The plot was interesting and not cliche. There was a little bit of everything (paranormal, action, sadness, happiness and romance). It had great character development and the story flowed nicely. Evelyn was a great main character who people could relate to. I thought the character relationships were good and none of the characters were annoying. This book did not have a cliff hanger (thank goodness) and it has a resolution. It also leaves room for a sequel (yay)! I recommend this book to everyone. I can see this as the next-popular book.
OMG I had so much fun reading that book, I just loved I couldn't put it down.I can't wait to read more of that story. Evelyn and Jerris are just the best, the way they interact with each other. The story remind of the Chronicle of Narnia.
That's the kind of book I would love to see made as a movie. Its magical.
Well written story with an engagin heroine in Evelyn. She's not whiny and constantly proves herself a likeable character without false saccharine actions. I liked the pairing of the two main characters and the viewpoints of both are nicely woven throughout the novel. The hints of more problems and adventure ahead makes me look forward to the next book.
I could not put it down once I got my hands on it. Has to be one of the most different, a good different, type of YA book. The characters are wonderful and grow into themselves and come into their own. I highly highly highly recommend this book. Hurry up with the sequel!
This story is about a girl and her truly disorienting experience. She is unknowingly inducted into an alternate universe, if that's what you want to call it. This girl must then survive a weird adventure into a different world and has to get used to strange things like talking fish.
Entertaining story. I received the book free from the author in exchange for an honest review and I quite enjoyed the book. It took a little time to really get into the story, but I enjoyed the new world, the well-developed characters and the action/suspense. A worthwhile book.
I received onyx bridge from the author for free , in return for a review. I enjoyed the story very much. It was a mix of love and fantasy. Couldn't put it down
When i first started reading this book i wasnt sure if i would like it but the more i read the more i liked it. The characters were good and very likable.. I cant wait to read the next.
I really enjoyed the world of this book. I admit it took me a little while to get into it, but once I did I was hooked! I really loved the characters and the adventure aspects. Jerris and Evelyn have really good chemistry and I am rooting for them all the way. A great first book, can’t wait to read more in the series.
Loved this book! The onyx bridge is a wonderful debut novel from Sofia Malamas. It’s different from the typical YA books these days in that it is original, captivating, and well written. It takes us into a fantastical world in which Evelyn lands into mysteriously through a painting. From there on, she encounters mysterious creatures and kingdoms and finds herself in a bit of trouble. No Prince Charming needed, she can handle herself in battle (Yay!). That being said, the budding romance between her and Jerris keeps me anxious for more!! It was a fun read with a bit of everything- action, mystery, romance. It transports you into another world full of imagination and magic. I can’t wait to read the next installment!!
