Two worlds. Two enemies.

Haunted by loss, Cascadian assassin Rickert D'Angelus is on a mission of vengeance. Determined to stop the Pacifican army from finding a portal to his world, he leads a group of warriors into New Seattle with one goal--to kill all Pacifican soldiers.

Neyla Trihorn had the perfect life until a deadly accident revealed her latent para-abilities. Now, the former fashion designer is the Pacifican army's hottest commodity in their fight against the invaders.

When Rickert discovers a beautiful, unconscious soldier on a cold mountain ledge near the portal, he realizes she's a Protection-Talent and cannot be killed. To prevent the army from using her skills again, he takes her as his prisoner instead.

One fated touch...

But when he pulls her into his arms, a sexy and compelling vision appears, awakening something inside him. Something he can't ignore.

Torn between duty and passion, Rickert must decide if the vision is a Talent trick designed to foil the enemy or the answer to his deepest desires...

Two worlds live side by side, separated by a portal and the fear of the unknown and hate. One world is filled with the magic of days gone past, with fierce warriors, simple lives and the feel of medieval times. On the other side is the world of high tech, trained soldiers and a few beings with “special powers” who are used in the war against “the other side.”

When assassin warrior Rickert finds an injured enemy soldier, Neyla, who has a special talent for protection, and is more comfortable with a cell phone than a gun, the sparks literally fly. Could these two be destined for each other? How could this be possible, they are sworn enemies, two different races, or are they?

Assassin’s Touch, book one in the new Iron Portal series by Laurie London has set down a solid foundation for future installments to follow. Do you like your heroes over-the-top handsome, brave and alpha, and your heroines able to step up to the plate, when needed, or the idea of a well-trained war horse to “ride?” This short escape from reality just might catch your eye! Laurie London’s gift for heating up a story has shown through again!

I don't know, this book was kind of a strange read for me. It is an alternate world sort of fantasy book, which is my cuppa, but the execution just wasn't there.

I'll start with the world-building. It was all over the place and didn't really make sense to me. Rickert is sort of this cross between medieval highland warrior and modern man, wearing handmade clothes and kilts, yet also using present-day slang and curses. The mash-up of those two felt off. It wasn't quite historical feeling, it wasn't quite contemporary feeling, and it wasn't quite fantasy feeling. I didn't know exactly what the story was trying to be. I don't know if the world-building just wasn't done well or if I don't like the author's taste, but I just never got into the whole setting of the book. Also the whole portal aspect of the story and the source of conflict between the two realms was a bit murky for me.

I also didn't like the erotic element of the story. The strange sex-visions just felt "WTF" to me instead of enticing. I wasn't intrigued, but rather a bit turned, actually. The way that Rickert kept saying "making love" also creeped me out. The love aspect of the book was rushed and there was a lot of telling and not showing.

All in all, not terrible but not anything better than okay for me.

I liked the idea of this novella a lot, but there were some confusing parts.

This novella takes place in an alternate world that is some sort of slightly different version of where we live. In New Seattle, portals have been found that lead to another world (the mythos of the 3 worlds should have been given at the beginning, not the last third). The New Seattle side is called the Pacificans, and the other world is called the Cascadians. The Cascadian world is like a medieval Scotland but with magic and modern mentalities and sensibilities, and nothing Scottish but kilts, swords and “lass.”

The heroine was lukewarm at best. I found her annoying and weak . I could absolutely get that her “talent” is what caused her to be forced into the military (they found out she had a talent, and literally forced her into the army). But what I didn’t like is that she a doormat. She took everything the guys had and just kept taking it. Her team was a bunch of dicks, I know, but she’s supposed to be uber special and they hate her? It’s hinted that something happened on a previous mission but it’s never explained, so we have no idea why they hate her.

The hero was great, and I love how when the chance for a Big Misunderstanding came up, he stayed true and knew she would never go back to the army. I liked the horses, and I liked the hero’s side of the portal, but so much was left in the air.

The baby stealing plot should have been hinted at sooner-it was so out of left field, yet it’s rather important.

And the Iron Sickness was never explained, nor why their clothing would disappear. Metal I could understand, but clothing? Crossing with metal apparently killed you, and you had to cross naked. Plus the New Seattle people apparently were able to cross before, but the heroine’s mission is to help find a portal. What happened here? Did everyone who found it before die, taking its secret location to their graves? Or is it a different portal? I never understood that.

This either needed to be a lot longer, or to have some of it removed and pushed to the next novel.

That being said, I like Laurie London, and I liked the concept of this story. It’s different and new. I have the next book and since it’s a full-length novel, I have high hopes for it.

Then Neyla and Rickert have moved to the New Seattle side of the portal and they are going to set up a command center of sorts for his people, so I think we’ll see a lot of them coming up.

Despite all the plotholes I still enjoyed the story, and will definitely continue.

Assassin’s Touch (Iron Portal # 1) by Laurie London
I received this book in exchange for an honest review by the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com
I fantastic read... I was quickly drawn in and became absolutely engrossed in this book until the very end. A successful mix of hot steamy sex, romance and adventure set in two worlds linked by a portal, one which is modern and the other almost medieval in nature. This book follows the story of Rickert, an Iron Guild Warrior and Neyla, a beautiful woman with a Protection-Talent, both from a different world who fate brings together. The characters are brilliant and very well defined. The writing is rich, descriptive and flows effortlessly. With its unique plot this book has a refreshing twist and is original and creative. A wonderful read that I enjoyed immensely. But I have to warn you that this book does leave you wanting more. I will definitely be looking out for more of this talented authors work.

“Ms. London’s world of Iron Portal is indeed enthralling. She again brought in an alpha hero to swoon over and a love story to sigh over. And again, she left me wanting more.” ~Under the Covers

I was actually shocked when I found out this book was about to be released. I’m usually in tune to when Ms. London has any new releases as I am a big fan of her Sweet Blood Series. I was smitten to see the very sexy cover taken by photographer/author Jenn Leblanc with model Karrrllll (Okay, Karl not Karrrrrlllll). Well, with that combo, I just had to have this book. As usual, Ms. London did not disappoint and even shocked me with this refreshing and impressive start to a new series.

The Pacificans and Cascadians are two parallel worlds divided by “portals”, an intriguing world of magic and power. Unfortunately, they are not at peace as both are saying they are protecting their own world from the other. As you delve into this good length novella, you will see who is telling the truth.

Both Rickert and Nyla are awesome to read about. They are from opposite worlds but their adventure to get to know each other is sweet and, if I may say, with STEAMY-HOT encounters. Rickert D’Angelus is a Cascadian assassin determined to prevent any Pacificans from entering his world. He is totally alpha and with a Cascadian physique. And when I say physique, I mean not6, not7, but 8+ INCHES” worth of physical make up *wags eyebrows* Yeah, I know…that certain scene won’t leave my brain…don’t judge. And on the opposite world, Neyla is a new Pacifican army with powers. She is also determined to use any means necessary to fight against invaders. Though their differences were worlds apart, their duties as soldiers and stereo types did not prevent them from seeing the truths about each other.

Ms. London’s world of Iron Portal is indeed enthralling. She again brought in an alpha hero to swoon over and a love story to sigh over. And again, she left me wanting more.

Fantasy/romance. Not my thing. Dominating Hero. "Spunky" heroine. Hardcore alpha lovers might like it better. Be aware that while it's a fantasy book its a weird mash-up of urban fantasy and Scottish historical romance. Some of the terminology (related to the sex scenes or thoughts) made me giggle, and not in any kind of good way. Not all that much plot, more of a set up for this world and other books. I don't think this author is my style but she might be yours.

In an alternate reality exists two worlds, both at war with each other. Neyla is drawn into this war against her will when it is discovered that she has a latent Talent. Enscripted into the army, in a war full of propaganda and struggling with the mistrust of the soldiers she's supposed to be fighting with, she is injured by a soldier on her side and captured by a 'barbarian'.

Taken over into Cascadia, she soon learns that the war is different to the stories that she's been fed. Given time to spend with the citizens, she realises that she doesn't want to go back. Of course, Rickert might also play a big part in that as the attraction between the two absolutely sizzles.

This is a fantastic start to the series with wonderful world-building. The characters are all full-bodied and believable, even the ones you dislike. Thoroughly enjoyable and definitely recommended for those who want a short but hot paranormal romance read.

This novella does a nice job setting up this world of a future New Seattle and portal to a medieval world with Talents and the war that rages between them.

We have a decent enemies to lovers fated mate tale here. The writing was good but because of the compression of the novella the love relationship wasn't nearly as compelling as it could be been.

I will definitely try another book in this series as I am intrigued.

I was given this book for my hoest review. So, there you have it.

I got this book as part of the Dark and Dangerous, Six-in-One Hot Paranormal Romances Boxed Set. This is the first book in the Iron Portal series.

To be fair, this sort of fantasy/paranormal stuff isn't really my cup o' tea. I bought this boxed set for the erotic aspect of it. While I've thoroughly enjoyed the first three books in the set, I just can't get into this one and I'm not gonna continue reading it.

While there aren't, so far, any mythological/paranormal beings in this story, it's a made up world and it just doesn't make sense to me. It seems like there are at least two planes since there is a portal between the two. One one side you have the Pacificans who live in New Seattle, which sort of sounds like a modern day type of world. On the other side of the portal, you have the Cascadians who live in Cascadia, which sort of sounds like Medieval Scotland.

Neyla is a Pacifican and she's been forced to be a soldier in the Pacifican army. From what I understand, she was the sole survivor of a train crash and her survival was evidently because she was a Talent with the para-ability to protect herself from harm. She can also, evidently, protect others and that's why she's useful to the army.

Rickert is a soldier in the Cascadian army. It sounds like he volunteered to be a soldier after the Pacifican army invaded Cascadia and destroyed his sister's village, killing even women and child. He also has a mild fire Talent that enables him to light candles and torches and such with his mind.

Anyway, Rickert and a small group of his men are on the Pacifican side of the portal when Neyla and he comes across Neyla and her small unit. One of Neyla's fellow soldiers tries to kill her because he doesn't like her for some unknown reason. Rickert kills the man and takes Neyla prisoner. He takes her through the portal to Cascadia. Rickert favors a kilt and the people of Cascadia wear tunics and such and it sounds like a medieval world, yet he says things like, "This is fucked." All the while calling her 'lass'.

Oh! And there are the erotic visions that both of them can see whenever their bare skin comes in contact with each other. These visions show the two of them "making love" and it's obvious they love each other deeply in the visions.

This whole thing is bizarre and just doesn't make any sense. There are so many things that contradict themselves, like his behavior and manners paired with his dialogue. Then there's the fact that the Pacifican army had to have crossed a portal in order to attack his sister's village, but when he finds Neyla, her unit was looking for a portal because they didn't know where one was and they wanted to be able to cross into Cascadia in order to launch an attack.

It just doesn't make sense and I can't bring myself to continue reading. If this sounds like your cup o' tea, however, you might really enjoy it...

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author through the Goodreads' group "Lovers of Paranormal". Two worlds at war; one modern, one historic, but both with equal hatred towards one another. This shows how two people, one from each world, find common ground and a little extra.

I really liked this book! It has a great plot, great conflict, steamy intimate scenes, and just the right balance of everything to keep my interest. Sure, the "I love you"s came a little quick, but its a short story; things always move faster in short stories. This book has a classic but steamy Romeo and Juliet start but with an ending so intense, I bit off the majority of my nails as I finished reading it. The concept was so unlike anything I had read before, so it had me hooked from the first page.

If I had one critique it would be that there needs to be more sub-character interactions. This book is a great stand-alone book, but it doesn't feel like a beginning to a series. Will I read the next book? Of course I will, in the hopes that I will get a story as great as this one. I could care less that it's Asher's story though, because he wasn't set up with a strong enough personality in this book to make me need to learn his happy ending.

Overall, I am extremely happy that I got to read this book, and I could easily find myself reading it again. It succeeded in being a short but effectively fun read. Great job, Ms. London!

Assassin's Touch is the first novella in Laurie London's new series, Iron Portal. It tells the story of Cascadian, Iron Guild assassin, Rickert, and Pacifican Army Talent Neyla.

I am a huge fan of Laurie London's Sweetblood series and was excited when she announced she had a new series that she was working on. I admit that I wasn't sure what to expect upon reading the blurb but am beyond thrilled with the novella.

Assassin's Touch is unlike anything I've read. The Pacificans and Cascadians have been at war for many years. The Cascadians are protecting the portals that give access to their world while the Pacificans are looking for the portals to keep "barbarians" from coming through and wreaking havoc. As with any book dealing with the theme of war you wonder who's in the wrong, Cascadian or Pacifican. Just know that once the truth is revealed, you learn just how despicable the bad guys are. As with the Darkbloods in the Sweetblood series, the villains in the Iron Portal series are sick-and-twisted. Laurie London gives good villain!

The Iron Portal world building is unique and intriguing, the chemistry between Rickert and Neyla is hot, hot, hot and there's lots of action. I was thoroughly engrossed in this novella and can't wait to see what happens in Asher's story, Rogue's Passion.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review via Lovers of the Paranormal.

If I have a criticism at all it is that the book was so short. It was well-written, had a very good plot line and the two main characters were instantly likeable - the fact that the two main characters instantly liked each other and gave us a few sexy scenes didn't hurt either.

The idea of the two different worlds was handled well, it did briefly cross my mind to wonder how the Cascadians were so aware of the other world's technology but maybe we will find out more in the next book which I am now looking forward to.

Knowing I was reaching the end of the book I began to look forward to the continuation of Neyla and Rickert's story so was a little surprised to see that the next book will be about Asher. I hope that Neyla and Rickert will be included as I still want to know more. I look forward to finding out more about Asher too.

I really enjoyed this book and will now go and get on with the next one :-)

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.

I got this book from Lovers of Paranormal Group of Goodreads under the Read to Review theme.

Well, I enjoyed this book quite a lot and it was really entertaining. The characters are well developed and we get to see all the flourished aspects of their nature which was a real great experience. I loved the action scenes very much. Those are very vividly portrayed and I was able to play it out in my mind as the story progressed. The passionate romantic relation between the lead characters made it an intriguing read and I enjoyed the ending very much. The concept is fresh and unique and the first few chapters pulled me in the story and kept me hooked in. Over all a great read and I would definitely recommend it to ya all.

Assassin's Touch the first book in the Iron Portal Series by Laurie London is a paranormal reader’s feast. It is a spectacular read jumping into the action on the very first page. Two different worlds at war with two very different perspectives on who is in the wrong is at the very heart of this love story.

Laurie London has created parallel worlds that are vividly detailed and intricately complex. The characters are certainly engaging as well as ones in which I could easily identify with. Yes, I would have been the “soldier” with the “I-love-you-truly book” to read. Then Rickert is simply the hero of any book when he is not angry so how could Neyla not help but fall for him even if they are sworn enemies.

This story was a pleasure to read from the beginning to the end which was not where I thought Rickert and Nayla would find up going. Perfect start to what looks to be an outstanding series.

The author provided a copy for an honest review.

Very unique story with a great plot concept, but a lot of backstory is missing. The missing backstory and additional explanation of the portals, the 'other' mission Agent Tierney's team had, and the two worlds creates potholes throughout the story. We are given a brief hint at a failed mission, but it isn't explained. We are told there are two worlds linked by portals, but not how those portals appear or more explanation for the crossing rules. It leads to confusion rather Han a smooth read while you wonder how and why.

I enjoyed the characters although Neyla could have used more depth to make her more interesting. We don't even learn more about the train incident hinted at in the beginning until nearly the end of the story. Our hero Rickert is very alpha male and has a great backstory explaining why he does what he does.

Overall, decent start to a unique series. A little more explanation throughout the story and this would be a fantastic series.

Neyla is a talent, drafted against her will, to aid in the war against the barbarians. Now on her latest mission, everything goes wrong and she´s captured by the enemy.
Rickert is on a scouting mission, trying to keep Pacificans from finding the portal to his world, when he stumbles upon a couple enemy fighters. Strangely enough, they seem to fight each other. The honesty in him makes Rickert save the woman from death, and avenge her injuries.
What is he to do with her? And what are these visions he keeps getting of them together, in passion?
Paranormal Romance, action and smutty fluff, and a new world I´ll love to go back to. On to book #2!! =)

It has taken me a while to get back to this forgotten book and i give the author credit for creating a new world and way of life within the novella she has brought to life.

Rickert and Neyla are brought together when Neyla's job as a protection talent leads her to where Rickert is hiding and protecting a portal into his world. A portal that the army uses to kill the adults and abduct the children to get other talented children they can force into creating a more powerful world.

It seems the fates however have another thing on their mind as they show the pair that they were meant to be and the army are thwarted for the time being from stealing children.

The pair tear up the pages and the pages need fanning at times as the heat leaps from the pages with their chemistry.

A decent read and i look forward to reading the rest of the series.

DNF - Only made it to page 62 before giving up.
The story was so confusing, I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. I got a vibe if modern (or maybe a 1960’s feel to it) world with a maybe very early 1700’s time period parallel world with some sort of portal between them that destroys clothing. The animosity wasn’t really explained of why either side wanted to destroy the other. But the parallel world didn’t quite mesh, everything was to mashed up. The world building to this point just didn’t make sense, the plot twisted & turned not making sense either. I didn’t see a chance of anything going to make sense in the final 80 pages. I just couldn’t see wasting more time to sort thru this mess when it was only 142 pages total to begin with.

This was good and I enjoyed it. Fairly fast paced due to its short length, but not so fast as to be annoying. Almost a cliffhanger. I say 'almost' because it doesn't leave you hanging in the middle of a scene, although it does leave the ending open for the next installment. This is a marked improvement over most cliffhangers.

Creatively Interesting

The fantasy world building coincides with urban fantasy romance that intrigued my interest. It took a while to get to the plot twist, but it was emotional, creative, and non-cliche for urban fantasy romance.

Eh

This had an interesting premise but was just meh. It was basic with no meat and no chemistry or world building.

It was ok but I didn’t get assassin, I didn’t get magic system, I didn’t get time frame or romance. Unfortunately I will not read on.
