About the author

Theodore J. Lowi was John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions at Cornell University. He was elected president of the American Political Science Association in 1990 and was cited as the political scientist who made the most significant contribution to the field during the decade of the 1970s. Among his numerous books are The End of Liberalism and The Pursuit of Justice, on which he collaborated with Robert F. Kennedy.

Look, Embattled Democracy: Politics and Policy in the Clinton Era is a weird little book, and I mean that with love. Lowi, Theodore J. takes a totally ordinary setup, a guy, a dead-end job, a haunted vending machine, and runs wild with it, especially in the scene where the machine starts giving advice that's frighteningly good. The ending fizzles, like the author ran out of steam. For readers who like their stories sideways. Pass if you need things to make sense.
