Nick Fury - ASSASSINATED? When enemy agents inject him with a deadly slow-acting poison, Fury enters a race against the clock to get to S.H.I.E.L.D. and get the cure…all while the poison drives him slowly mad!
Archie Goodwin was an American comic book writer, editor, and artist. He worked on a number of comic strips in addition to comic books, and is best known for his Warren and Marvel Comics work. For Warren he was chief writer and editor of landmark horror anthology titles Creepy and Eerie, and for Marvel he set up the creator-owned Epic Comics as well as adapting Star Wars into both comics and newspaper strips. He is regularly cited as the "best-loved comic book editor, ever."
I enjoyed this drug-fueled Nick Fury story. The art wasn’t Steranko great, but it impressed me, and while the plot wrapped-up a bit too neatly, it was still a solid read.
Another standalone story for this title, but it's a cool one.
The cover alone is worthy of mention, because it's the last of Steranko on this title and for its Dali-esque style that recalls Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" painting.
As for the rest, the art and story perfectly complement each other. You can't help but imagine what wonder Steranko would have drawn for this plot, but to tell the truth, Frank Springer did a pretty good job. He is capable of masterfully depicting Fury's paranoid condition and rush.
Archie Goodwin's plot suffers from the usual plot holes tied to clichéd hero and villains' stereotypes, but due to the fast-paced nature of the story and the fact that the artwork perfectly enhances and complements the story, make it highly enjoyable reading.
