I have been listening to the Audible version of the books in this series and the narration has been great for each one. This is the eight book in the 'Immortals After Dark' series and this series still manages to hold my interest. With each new book, I get another couple to discover as they fall in love with each other.

This time around, we get the story of Murdoch and Daniela. Like Naomi, Daniela cannot be touched by her mate. However, Dani's inability to be touched is due to her ice fae heritage. When touched, she suffers as if she is being burned.

Needless to say, Daniela's unique condition makes sexual situations difficult. As if she wasn't insecure enough about her condition already, her mate is well-known in the lore for his sexual conquests. Poor Dani feels like she cannot contend with the hordes of more experienced females that Murdoch has had.

For his part, Murdoch doesn't exactly help ease Dani's fears. He is initially as resistant to the idea of being tied down to a "mate" as Dani was. After watching his own father fall apart after the death of his mother, he is certain that he doesn't want to follow in his footsteps. He's seen the devastation that results when you care too much for another.

Eventually, like the other couples in this series, they figure out that they can't bear to be separated. After a healthy dose of angst, we get the HEA that we crave. Overall, 3.5 stars from me. It was sweet, fun and sexy!

Murdoch Wroth

Murdoch

Murdoch is one of the famous Wroth brothers. They are all Forebearer Vampires, which means they do not drink from human flesh. Murdoch used to be a man whore, never sleeping with the same woman twice. He always made sure his lovers were pleased because positive word of mouth was the best advertisement.

When Murdoch was turned into a vampire 300 years ago, he lost all desire for sex. Not only did his heart stop beating, his dick also became a useless organ. But Murdoch has just met his Bride and all of his organs have sprung to life. So what if she is a Valkyrie. He intends to have her in his bed.

Daniela, the Ice Queen

description

Daniela longs to be touched and loved. But she is half Valkyrie and half Icere, so any skin contact burns her and causes severe pain. She has just become a vampire bride, but can't even indulge in passionate sex with her vampire. Daniel is also the Queen of the Icere. But she is on the run from a rival king that wants her dead.

This could have been a fun novella, but Murdoch was such an ass that I found it hard to enjoy. I mean, he was a total jerk. He wanted to revert back to his bachelor ways of being a slut instead of clinging to the one woman that nature had picked just for him. I haven't disliked a hero this much in a long time.

These two worked it out in the end and had an adorable HEA, but damn if it didn't take a lot to get there. Murdoch is hands down my least favorite hero in this series so far. I loved Daniel. She saved this book. And I look forward to moving on to the next book in the IAD series.

I had a hard time figuring out which direction to take this installment.

Was it going to be

Fetish Cafe : Frozen

or perhaps

Fetish Cafe : Ice Ice Baby

But if we're going to go cheesy, let's do it full force.

Meanwhile, on 90's throwback night at the cafe...

Me : *trying to make eye contact with the waitress who has passed my table more than 10 times* Hi?

Waitress : One sec. I promise, I will be right with you.

***10 minutes later***

Waitress : I am SO sorry. It's been a madhouse in here. Demons always show up in droves for flashback nights.

Me : That's weird. They always seem so serious. *pauses to watch a male demon get a lap dance from a nymph with a beer funnel hat* Ohhhkay. Now I've seen everything.

Waitress : *laughs* Oh, honey. That's nothing. Give them about 15 minutes. When you see a second girl join them wearing a furry costume, then you can say that you've seen it all.

Me : *shakes head* Maybe I need to order before it gets to that point. I'm going to take the Ice Cave fantasy tonight.

Waitress : You like cold play?

Me : The music? Not really.

Waitress : No. Like fire play, except with ice.

Me : Oh, no. I'm in this for the glove fetish.

Waitress : Got it. Yeah, that's a good one. I'll send over our best glover. His name is Danny.

Me : Wait, what? I thought his name was Murdoch.

Waitress : It was a joke. Being 90's night and all. You know...Danny Glover? *pauses and looks for recognition* Never mind. I'll let Murdoch know you're ready.

Me : Thanks. And remind him...no glove, no love.

********************************************************

If you've ever seen the the movie Frozen, you'll find the story of Elsa Dani and Murdoch to be a little familiar.

But I got to read about Murdoch wearing gloves because it was the only way he could touch Dani. Yes, I have an actual thing for men wearing gloves. So this fetish was one I could really get behind.

For some strange reason, I ended up skipping book 8 by accident and reading book 9 first, so if you're wondering why these reviews came out of order, that's why.

The best part of the story was the resolution of Dani and Murdoch's no-touching rule. I think it was great that Dani

UNTOUCHABLE piggybacked off of many of the previous installments in this series which gave it a “been there, done that” quality. Murdoch & Daniela’s relationship was somewhat similar to Naomi & Conrad’s from book 5 in that physical contact was impossible, and both stories featured a Wroth brother. The plot was shaky, and seemed more intent on recapping past IMMORTALS AFTER DARK happenings while also introducing new characters instead of giving the two leads their due. This was the third novel that’s missed the boat which is still a respectable track record.

The romance was this audiobook’s biggest failing in my opinion; I liked that the roles were reversed with the female pursuing the male, but the two protagonists were constantly at each other’s throats (again, similar to KISS OF A DEMON KING) which turned their love story into a war zone. The author glossed over the many steps between Bachelor Panic to HEA, and as a result I just didn’t get how they got from A to the cheeZiest ending that this series has produced so far. The sex scenes made me laugh with their artificial melodramatics and cloyingly sweet feels.

I’ve already expressed in some of my earlier reviews how much I enjoy the fact that many of the installments take place alongside one another; however this novel blurred the timeline a bit with too much jumping around. We go from the beginning of this series, to the Hie, to the conclusion of Conrad’s tale, and then wrap it all up with Danii’s plot thread. I felt like a deranged bouncy ball landing briefly in all eight of the preceding titles while barely touching upon more on target specifics such as ice fey mythology, and Forebearer deets.

Robert Petkoff’s narration rode in on its white horse for the third time to rescue Kresley Cole’s flailing writing; I’m beginning to suspect that his delivery has more to do with IAD’s success than the author. Ok, no, not really, but the last few audiobooks have definitely benefited because of his contribution. He tried Loa’s Cajun accent on for size, and it suited him just as well as the werewolves’ Scottish brogue, or the rage demons’ fury.

UNTOUCHABLE was mostly a flop, although the Petkoff band-aid made it worthwhile. ~3.5 Stars

Much better the second time around and there’s a Christmas epilogue 4/5⭐️ 🌶️🌶️.5/5

_______

Not my favorite bc they fought so much and the payoff after the slow burn wasn’t as great as it could’ve been, but still cute in the series. It did also feel like an afterthought.

"They say I’m as fickle as winter, as shy as frost, and as indifferent as a blizzard. It’s rumored my body is pure as driven snow. Nobody imagines that I might be full of fire."

The main part of the story covers the events of the Immortals After Dark series from the first novella, The Warlord Wants Forever to the end of book 5, Dark Needs at Night’s Edge.

I reviewed this story here , at Deep Kiss of Winter anthology.

Let's see, I liked the beginning. I really liked their first meeting. It's violent and bloody. I also liked the glimpse of Danii's world. After that, though, it goes downhill. If you ignore the steamy parts, Danii and Murdoch turn Untouchable into a YA-like story.
Of course they aren't young adults. They are hundreds of years old. That doesn't stop them. Not even Nix and her antics could have made it better.

Although the story is placed as an eighth story (no idea why), you can read it right after Dark Needs at Night's Edge. It overlaps with the other Wroth stories and it will remind you of some events from the other three Wroth books, but it has the last word.
Speaking of the Wroths, I think I know another reason why I wasn't thrilled with their stories. I don't really like them. I am glad Murdoch Wroth is the last one. There won't be any Wroth stories.

I've decided to continue with this series, so I can't skip anything.

The 8th book in the Immortals After Dark series brings us the story of the fourth and final of the Wroth brothers – Murdoch. In his human life, Murdoch was a ‘love-em-and-leave-em’ kind of guy, until he was turned into a vampire and rendered unable to be with a woman until he met his fated mate. Now, 300 years later, an encounter with a fierce and intriguing valkyrie makes his heart beat again and he finds himself ‘blooded’ to Daniela the Ice Maiden.

Danii is part ice-fey, making her skin is ice-cold, and a mere touch of her skin causes excruciating pain for both her and whoever she touches. After the assassination of her ice-fey mother she has created a life for herself with her valkyrie sisters but she is incredibly lonely, and longs for affection and the touch of another.

The attraction between Murdoch and Danii is evident from their first meeting, and they both very quickly acknowledge the bond between them, but their inability to touch in any way leaves them both frustrated and despondent. They are desperate for the closeness that their bodies and souls are screaming for, and their struggle to find a way to be together creates a push-and-pull between them as they rail against the unfairness while at the same time fall for each other for real.

It’s an up and down ride, and it’s not always happy times for this couple. The timeline of this book takes us from the very beginning of the series right through to the current day as Murdoch and Danii sort themselves out. But as much as they try to create a life together, they have personal battles to fight before they can find their HEA.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s not as exciting and action-packed as others in the series, but Danii and Murdoch’s story is well told with lots of emotion, and I was fully invested in their journey. You may be wondering about the sexy time seeing as though our hero and heroine can’t touch each other – let me just tell you that this is one imaginative pair, and there is plenty of steamy time to be had!

And once again, audiobook narrator Robert Petkoff does an incredible job at bringing this series to life. The man is an incredibly storyteller, and his narration brings so much to the story as he inhabits the characters with personality and passion. He makes each book an experience and it’s a real treat to listen to him.

I loved it - 4 stars.

"Untouchable" is the resolution to the fates of the four Estonian vampire Brothers and their fated mates. In this shorter story we get to follow Murdoch Wroth`s journey of finding his soulmate in the half valkyrie and half icere Daniela the Ice Maiden.Because of her frozen skin a physical touch between them is impossible.

Murdoch Wroth was seen as the womanizer among the brothers and greatly hates that people sees him that way which i found hilarious. He hates the thought of even finding a Bride (vampires endearment for mates) and that his heart will belong to one woman. He never saw Daniela coming and i love how she challenges him, makes him question himself and how he looses all his charming grace when he is near her.I am so happy Daniela finally found her man since i felt so sorry for her loneliness. The scenes in the manor in Siberia where Murdoch took her were intensely carnal and sexy, and i was happy that through much obstacles and fighting Murdoch found his way back to her again.

It was fun meeting the other vampire brothers again,Conrad is still my favourite Wroth brother and his mate Neomi has a piece of my heart.I am crazy about this series,Kresley Cole never disappoints.

***

When her gaze met his once more, his eyes had darkened to black. "I can't get enough of you, Valkyrie."

Her hands slipped up his chest to meet at his nape. "Then kiss me, vampire." And don't ever stop...

3.5 stars rounded up. I really liked the turn around in this one. It's usually the heroine who has trouble committing to the hero who is mega possessive/obsessed from day one.

The hero is mega possessive/obsessed from day one, but he fights it (rather than the other way around, which tends to be the hallmark of the series). He was a big manho in his mortal life and just can't quite get past this sudden obsession with one woman and the fact that his charming BS doesn't work on Dani.

This was apparently a shorter novella, first published in a collection, so it's not as long as the other books and kind of spans the first 6 novels from Murdoch's first appearance in book 1 to touching on his brother's stories. There is some overlap where you get to see scenes that you've already seen, but from Murdoch's POV. I didn't think it was overkill myself, but it's worth noting. Personally I always wondered what happened with the comb Neomi stole from Murdoch in Conrad's book and where he went after their imprisonment, etc.

Dani was a likeable character. She was a 2K year old virgin, but it was believable. She simply physically could not have sex or even touch anyone due to her freezing skin. She wasn't naive. She has a rich fantasy life, but couldn't act on it. The resolution was great.

“Welcome to the Lore. Little makes sense. Rules are fluid. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, you hear about a vampire unaffected by the sun, a mute siren, or a chaste nymph.”

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there was just something missing from this story. Something that all the other Immortals After Dark novels had that this one was missing. This book just doesn’t measure up to the other instalments in the series.

I liked the protagonists, Daniela and Murdoch, but that’s REALLY not saying much, since all of the IAD characters are fantastic. So that’s not really praise. I felt there was something missing from Daniela and Murdoch as characters. As if they were only 85% conceptualized. I didn’t feel completely invested in them, and I think it’s because they didn’t seem as well rounded and multifaceted as the other main characters in this series.

“And Murdoch? Well, he was a ladies’ man, a practiced seducer.
Or he had been, but no longer, now that he was an unblooded vampire. What a waste. The world just didn’t have enough broad-shouldered seducers with gray eyes.”

I also believe the plot was made flimsy due to when it takes place, and where certain characters were already established to be at certain times in the series. For example, Murdoch has been in every book that has had his brothers as central characters. Which means his whereabouts are already accounted for at random times throughout many months. Which wouldn’t be a problem if this book took place after all that, but it actually starts (chronologically) at the same time as The Warlord Wants Forever (Immortals After Dark #0.5). So there are long lags of time here and there in the book, that just don’t make sense for the story.

I have a theory that when Kresley Cole started writing this series, she got the idea that Daniela and Murdoch would be an interesting pair with a cool story. She just wasn’t ready to write about them yet, so she put a rough draft of them on the back burner. Then time went on, and there was never a good time for their story to take place, until eventually she had to get around to writing it, because it was alluded to so much. By then she just didn’t feel as passionate about the story as she did when she first conceived it, and it resulted in a weak pairing and flimsy plot. I didn’t feel like this was someone’s labor of love. It seemed more like a necessity due to foreshadowing. This is all just a theory of mine though, I have absolutely no evidence that this actually happened.

“You’re going to have to cut that out, vampire.”
His head whipped forward. “Cut what out?”
“Baring your fangs anytime a mortal checks me out” Now she sounded smug.
“I was not baring my fangs.” He might have been baring his fangs.
“Daniela, you’ll find that I’m far from a jealous person.”
“Uh-huh.”

Aside from that, what also made me less enthusiastic about this book compared to other instalments in the series is that Untouchable just felt kind of depressing? I never felt like there was a moment of excitement or hope, because we (the readers) already know what happens during certain time periods, and the whole “not being able to touch” thing just became a big bummer. At the very beginning it was sort of entertaining, but that quickly wore off, and then things just felt sad and dreary. The whole book felt like it was about a couple trying to make a relationship that wasn’t working, work, and failing and being miserable because of it for as long as a year. Instead of a new couple, learning who each other are, and falling in love in a few weeks or a couple months.

“Her half sister Reign liked her men young, dumb, and hung, as she put it. Danii now knew her type: vampire with an Adonis physique. And she didn’t say that lightly. She knew Adonis well.”

I’ll be honest, on surface level, the concept of this book seems pretty intriguing. A 300 year old vampire rake/manwhore falls for the ice queen with a frozen heart and gets bachelor’s panic? That sounds fun! This story was not though. Once again, I think it comes back around to the characters not feeling fully formed. I just didn’t get the impression that the author really loves these characters or this story, you know?

However, I must say that Kresley Cole, as a writer, continues to improve with every book she writes. It’s always amazing to discover an author that just keeps getting better with each book they write. There’s just something really wonderful about a creator that continually improves their ability, and therefore their content and art. Hell, I even liked the epilogue in this book, and I almost always hate those! So that’s got to be a testament to her ability.

“If you’ve reached this message and you weren’t trying to contact Reign the Radiant—
Reign?
—“then I know three things about you. One of my half sisters just tooled your ass and never wants to see you again. B. You’re pop-culturally illiterate not to know that this number is a song. And three, you’ll never tell another male about this humiliating prank, so the number trick can be continued indefinitely.”

At last, you may be wondering why I gave this book 3 stars, despite sort of bashing it (it’s actually 2.5 stars, but whatever). And that’s simply because this book was easy to read and enjoy. I could easily pick it up, and get enthralled instead of bored. If you’ve ever read my reviews, then you know that I value pure entertainment just as much, if not more, than “objectively correct” content. If it entertains me, then it can’t ever be that bad. Plus, this is an Immortals After Dark story, and those are hard to dislike.

“How old are you?”
“Two thousand or so.”
“Two thousand.”
“ I’m a Pisces.”

Thus concludes the Wroth brother's saga!

As always, this author is the queen of angst and palpable chemistry. The push and pull between Murdoch & Daniela was dripping with page-turning glory.

Oh yeah, and apparently are sexy? Thank you Kresley. lol

What a bounty of cheesy goodness!

Everybody and their dog knows I listen to this series because I like the narration. As usual, Robert Petkoff was all out and I love him for it! I just wish the plot would make the narration justice.

The plot in this book differed from the rest of the series - instead of him chasing her, SHE wanted the relationship while he wasn't very crazy about the fated mates business. But after a while, their relationship devolved into a lot of fighting and I didn't see how they fell in love. This story seemed more of an excuse to rehash what happened in the series and introduce new characters (that Jodian (sp?) has 'future hero!' written all over him.)

I laughed a lot with the love scenes - I know I'm not supposed to, but some of them were super cheesy and that epilogue was so sugary!

Even if the romance wasn't satisfactory, I still got a lot of enjoyment out of this audio. Hopefully the next book is better plot wise.

This book was boring. So boring that I played games on my device while I read it to make sure I didn't doze off.

Why was it boring: Murdoch was so not into having a relationship, being blooded, anything. He just wanted to hump Daniela and be on his merry vampire way. But since she's an Ice fey and he couldn't touch her without burning her and causing her agony, he couldn't wham, bam, thank you ma'am her....which made him really irritable and unkind to her. She was nice, but boring...happy to play in the ice all day. I'm used to the Valkyrie in this series being super kick ass. Usually, men run the other way, screaming in fear of the wee vicious Valkyries. Daniela was none of that. Best part of this story - Nix. Nix needs her own book!!!

If you skipped reading this book you would not be missing anything. It adds nothing to the overall plot of this series. NOTHING!

I didn't realize this was the same book as book 7...

This book was about Daniela, another Valkyrie, and Murdoch Wroth.

I liked the beginning until Murdoch started acting stupid, he is my least favorite of the Wroth brothers.

He has been celibate for 300 years but he can't give his Bride some time?

Daniela was the only Valkyrie that I could tolerate and the author put her with the Weakest Link..

And, why keep information about the Lore from turned vampires, the Forebearers?

They are still vampires whether they were born or not. Duhh..

Overall, not as good as it could have been.

Fun and suspenseful. I forgot how it all worked out in the end, which made it fun to read again. I love the variety in the characters, powers, and world building with this series.

PREVIOUS REVIEW:
An interesting change of pace. And who isn't fascinated by a girl made of cold and ice? That never gets old, in my opinion. Not when it's well done.

The world just grew in a direction I didn't expect it to grow. Cole does a good job of taking something that could become very repetitive and making each new story seem different.

2021 review: 3.5 it’s fine. It fills some gaps but really it’s just weird. Favorite part is that Dani really wanted an alpha and got the softest beta Kresley can write (so not a real one 😂)

2019 Review: Meh. Glad to be done with the Wroth's. Can't wait for some werewolves in the next book!

Read it as a part of Deep Kiss of Winter.
And it brought back sweet memories about the previous IAD. I really enjoy it a lot, and don't let me start talking about the epilog, beyond amazing really.

REREAD NO. 4: Murdoch the ex-rake/manwhore (Danii's words, not mine) getting repeatedly annihilated by the karma bus once he gets blooded by a bride he can't touch or properly seduce will never get old... even if I do feel kind of bad for him. Just a smidge. But mostly it's just satisfying to watch because the way he takes his frustration out on Danii in particular kills me (and not in a good way). Like - I get it, and I can sympathize... but dude. DUDE. Our girl didn't ask for this. You are not the only "victim" here. Chill (pun intended).

Anyways, still love this book. Danii is still wonderful and such an underrated fave. The unresolved sexual tension is agonizing and fantastic. Kresley Cole is queen.

Also - I forgot how many fantastic quotes there are in this book!

Danii turned from him to snag the T-shirt, donning it as she dropped the sheet. When she met his gaze, he appeared even more incensed than before.

"Obviously, I need to leave," she said, while thinking, Tell me I'm your Bride, and that I will be staying. Be an arrogant possessive Neanderthal vampire!

She wanted him to simply inform her that he would never let her go and she would just have to accept that, or whatever domineering misguided tripe these manly men always said. To women that aren't me.

UPDATE: On round 3 of reading my way through this series and yeah, this baby got so much better on the reread. I love Danii even more than I did previously (she's a kindred spirit, that one), Murdoch the manwhore of the Wroth brothers bumbling his way through wooing his Valkyrie bride is hysterical, and Deshazior's cameo remains a favorite.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: A nice novella/short story for the final Wroth brother, but it wasn't my favorite of the bunch, unfortunately. It was still solid, though.

Once more, the heroine/leading lady was the main highlight here for me. Danii was such a kindred spirit at times and I was so happy she got her HEA. Wish we could have spent more time with her and Murdoch, though. I get that this was a novella, but it all felt so rushed, which is a shame, because I'm a sucker for a good reformed rake story.

Glad all the Wroth brothers have their HEAs now.

The timeline of Murdoch Wroth and Daniela's story overlaps those of the previous Wroth brothers and Cole managed quite well. While each book works on its own, I highly recommend reading them in order. Timelines, key characters, and a Seer name Nix enhance the stories the further we progress into the series.

After 300 years, Murdoch finds his fated mated and his heart begins beating. I was very curious to learn Murdoch story. He has popped in and out of the previous books and Cole even hinted about him finding his mate. Daniela is Valkyrie but also part Icere. Her ice fey side has left her in hiding and unable to touch anyone.

Murdoch saves her and their messy, heated haters to lovers romance begins. Of course, Murdoch wants to deny his mate is a Valkyrie and then to not be able to touch her really sets him off. They get creative in the passion department, but their romance was turbulent with bickering and frustrations. I could have skipped the angst and miscommunication between them and often wanted to bop them on the heads. However, I did like that Cole reversed roles have Daniela be the one who pursues Murdoch. We get to see character growth between the two of them and got to visit Icere. Sacrifice, commitment, and determination made way for a sentimental and heartwarming ending.

Robert Pedkoff continues his stellar narration and for me, he brings these tales to life. His ability to handle both the female and male voices in addition to creating unique voices for them delivered a treat to my ears. I love that as soon as someone speaks I know who they are without any indicators.

Far from my favorite in this series, UNTOUCHABLE did offer humor, introduced new characters and had Nix heavily involved throughout. She is hands down my favorite character and I enjoyed her snark and meddling. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Vampire Murdoch, one of the Wroth brothers, finally finds his mate Daniela the Ice Maiden, but this is one Valkyrie he cannot touch. Since she is part ice fey, if you touch her skin, it burns her. That also means that Murdoch cannot claim her for his own as he cannot bed her nor bite her. These two become frustrated trying to figure out how they are supposed to be together, but can't be together. Is there any way to overcome the ice queen's condition?

I liked this story more than the other vampire books because these two actually wanted each other, but circumstances beyond their control prevented them for moving forward in their relationship. It was interesting seeing their highs and lows as frustration got the best of them.

I did find this dragged out a bit, but I think it needed to to fully understand the contentment between Dani and Murdoch at the end, I also love how this was happening during all the other brothers stories .loved both characters even though the miscomunication between them grated one a few times... Still an amazing read as always
