EN For the first time since I started reading this series, I genuinely felt like jumping straight into the next volume.

Even so, I’m still not completely convinced. The narrative remains somewhat linear, despite the numerous time jumps and changes in setting — which, at times, feel more confusing than enriching.

I’m not usually one to hate villains, but En is definitely one of the few exceptions. There’s just something about him that repulses me — I can’t feel any sympathy for the character. I suspect the day he’s finally defeated will also be the day I give this series a well-deserved 5-star rating. *laughs*

Other than that, it’s still an easy and fun read, as always. And Hayashida’s artwork remains absolutely excellent.

The moment I've been waiting for, and it did not disappoint. We finally got to see Caiman's face. There was a showdown between Caiman and Nikaido vs. En, which did not disappoint either. Once again, Nikaido and Caiman are among the best dynamics in the series. Nikaido only cares for Caiman and is willing to disobey En's contract even if it means she may die, and Caiman is there to protect her and defend her.

The most underrated dynamic is Fujita and Ebisu. Both are outcasts in the Sorcerer's world, living in En's mansion and their hearts. Fujita still hasn't avenged his former partner, and Ebisu had a family who abandoned her and tried to create a clone of her and failed. Yet they hold each other up when the other is down and protect each other even when nobody else cares. I love their dynamic and want to go into more detail, but I don't have the time. I love this series so much.

Just when you think this series couldn't get any better. Hayashida kicks it up a notch with this volume. I am not going to spoil anything, so let's just say there's quite a bit of disturbing body horror mixed with dark comedy in this volume. There are also several epic moments, one of which includes a most bizarre depiction of the ritual creation and birth of a human clone.

I'm taking longer breaks between volumes because I don't want this series to end. I can safely say it's my favorite long running manga series.

Rating: 5/5 – The Volume We’ve Been Waiting For – Though We Might Regret It.

In any manga series there’s a “Come to God” moment – the protagonist and the big-bad meet and scuffle for the first time, the high school girl finally gets her opportunity to be alone with the boy of her dreams, etc. – and that moment has arrived in Dorohedoro’s 10th volume, where hero Caiman finally meets up with villain Ein in a showdown that may result in Nikaido’s ultimate destruction.

No idea what I’m talking about? You have some quality reading to do, and I think by the time you’ve caught up to me, you’ll thank me for telling you to go back and grab vols. 1-9 of this series.

( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)

All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts!

TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror, substance (black powder), nudity
Rating: 5 stars

15 years ago, in Hole, we see Prof Kasukabe at his clinic with a magic victim. The individual requires surgery and Prof promises to help. He looks so cute at any age, doesn't he?! :') After the victim left, we see a boy entering the clinic drenched in the rain. His name is Ai. He read one of Prof Kasukabe's books and asked to become a sorcerer.

This seems to be the time when The Neighborhood patrol (NP) was still in effect (Mentioned in Shin's past in volume 4). They are seen killing sorcerers. We see Prof Kasukabe collecting their bodies. Ai caught him doing it. The two drove to his house. He revealed to Ai that the body is for his research. It helps him treat magic victims too. He showed him his laboratory. They're full of dead sorcerers.

Ai said that his name sounds like a sorcerer. He shared that the name was actually his wife's. She started learning about sorcerers when she got sick to help her. (HOW CUTE AND SWEET IS HE?)
He got dumped though. He started publishing books with the name 'Kasukabe' and never stopped using it.

We see Prof Kasukabe operating on the magic victim we saw earlier. Although the surgery was successful, he didn't make it. During the funeral, Prof ponders upon his work as a doctor and researcher.

Ai works at Prof's clinic for almost a year. Prof asked him about his intentions of becoming a sorcerer. In which he replied 'there's nothing to live for in this town (Hole).'

We see Prof running to collect a dead sorcerer's body once more. This time with Ai. Apparently, the sorcerer was thrown into the sewage pit. The pit is filled with a little bit of everything and is dangerous. Ai didn't hesitate to save the sorcerer. On the brink of death, his wish is for Prof Kasukabe to perform an operation on him. There's nothing to lose, anyway. He will die either way.
Prof did the surgery on him and was surprised that he survived. He starts documenting Ai's recovery. Thanks to follow-up surgeries and physical therapy, Ai is able to walk again.

Ai: When I jumped into the pit and got pulled down into the sludge and shit, I felt like I turned into Hole itself. Looking back... I think maybe I was reborn.

SHOCKING!

Back in the present, Prof Kasukabe retrieved Ai's files. Nobody with his plate number has been collected during the living dead day. Since Ai never rose from the grave as a zombie, Prof deduced that the wax doll that he saw is Ai.

We see Ebisu waiting at the train station to leave. Apparently, she had been a "silent sorceress" before she lost her memories. I miss your commentaries, Ebisu! Fujita can't seem to leave her alone. Ebisu continues to remain silent and ignores Fujita. We start seeing Ebisu's true colours (swears a lot and has quite a temper). She reunited with an old friend. He helps her distract Fujita while she escapes through the back door. Upon arriving home, we see her clone.

Back at the bathhouse, Caiman suffers from insomnia and decided to take a walk. He plans to try out the black powder given by Natsuki.

Shin and Noi, still in Hole awaits for Prof's arrival at the restaurant. We see him riding Johnson to the restaurant. Hahahaha. Prof shares with the group what he knew and revealed that he performed surgery on Ai. There's no knowing if the operation actually worked because Ai got murdered by sorcerers shortly after. He remembers Ai changing drastically after the surgery though.

Prof Kasukabe returned to the sorcerers realm with Shin and Noi. He intends to ask for Haru's help. Shin and Noi decided to join him as their main goal is to kill the Cross Eyes' boss. Johnson wasn't invited but entered the portal door anyway. Dr Vaux told Thirteen that he's sure that Caiman is human as he has done many operations on him (human & sorcerers bodies are drastically different).

Caiman sees the cross-eyes, Dokuga and Tetsujo fishing for some coins at a vending machine (I feel bad for these low rank sorcerers, always). Before he was able to draw a weapon, the pair got to him first. He mentions that he is Risu's friend (which is technically not a lie). He asks them to take him to Risu.

Back at En's mansion, we see En on bedrest with Chota looking after him.
Shin and Noi arrived with Prof Kasukabe and Johnson. Chota revealed to them about the Nikaido scheme. Prof seems happy about it. One of the staff came to tell them they found a Nikaido lookalike in Berith and En immediately wakes up from his sleep.

Nikaido woke up to find Caiman missing. She left Natsuki at the springs and went on to find him.
Meanwhile, En didn't hesitate to turn Chota into a mushroom (Poor Chota) and quickly went after Nikaido (the contract acts as a tracking device. Although the contract is no longer inside of her, it is not officially anulled. See the reasons in my review for volume 7)

Fujita pursues Ebisu. Ebisu fought off her clone and search for her parents. They're on a business trip. Ebisu panicked once she saw her doppelganger. She flees from her and was helped by a housemaid. The maid shares with Ebisu that her parents got depressed when she disappeared. They brought a strange sorcerer home. The sorcerer has the ability to create clones. While the clone looks like Ebisu, she doesn't act like her. The clone killed the maid and went berserk.

Ebisu retreated to her bedroom and found a bag of black smoke hidden behind a bookshelf. She proceeded to consume it. She turned into a lizard. The two monsters fight.

Fujita arrived at the house to see the clone badly injured and Ebisu ripped apart. Scared at first, Fujita returned to the room after seeing her bad condition. He proceeded to use his smoke to kill the monster clone. Still adamant in saving Ebisu, he finds her stash of black powder and consumed it.

Dokuga asks if Caiman is Aikawa. We see the springs being destroyed with mushrooms. En has arrived and the cross-eyes flees. Caiman worries about Nikaido and heads back to the room. Nikaido can feel the contract regenerating inside her once more. Caiman attempts to escape with her from En. The two men fights. Caiman is immune to magic but with En's ability to sprout mushrooms by having the opponent inhale some spores, we see a large mushroom enrupting from Caiman's chest.

Fujita managed to kill the monster clone, thanks to the black powder. Ebisu is on the brink of death and he tries to comfort her. Unfortunately, she passes away.

Shin, Noi , Prof Kasukabe and Johnson arrived at Berith. Nikaido fights En. En questions Caiman's importance.

Nikaido: He's the only thing I care about. I AM DEAD, BE RIGHT BACK.

As Ebisu dies, her magic wears off. Caiman got his face back. Nikaido proceeds to help him from being killed by En. Unfortunately both got too weak and Nikaido is kidnapped by En, once again.
We see a 'dead' Caiman on the ground amidst the ruins. Risu's soul/curse escapes from his body and is freed.

Risu: You were killed by someone other than me
(So they're not the ones who killed each other!)

Weak, Nikaido is taken away. She thinks about the promise that she made with him the night before about going back to Hole together. En's cleaners proceeded to search for Caiman's dead body. Prof Kasukabe isn't convinced that he's dead. The body was nowhere to be found. However, they saw a shadow of a human leaving and also a reptile head.

The cross-eyes quietly flees from Berith Hotsprings and hides in a paddy field before heading back to their hideout. Tetsujo shares them a story about the boss. Tetsujo was able to enter a bar where the high-ranks frequented because of the Boss. The elite sorcerers seem to be scared of him.
The rest of the gang proceeds to share more stories. I understand why the Boss is well-respected by the cross-eyes and is treated as a 'savior' of the low-ranked sorcerers. He is powerful and amazing in combat. Of course this inspired them.

Back when they were younger, the gang got caught and was thrown in Hole. The Boss killed the men who left them there and proceeded to use the portal door. They didn't hesitate to follow him. That's when the Cross Eyes group started growing. The gang then stumbled upon a lonely Natsuki , searching for Caiman.

Risu is still stuck and tied to the ceiling at the gang's hideout. He sees a dark figure by the door.

Bonus chapter: We learn more about the original devil, Chidaruma. He is so brutal (I mean, he's a devil, after all) and kinda hilarious. If I were a devil, I would play pranks on my friends and sorcerers too. Just like him, I too can get obsessive over something (Food, manga series, etc).

My entire review for this could be one giant exclamation point, and it would still accurately convey my feelings. There was a lot of stuff going on in volume 9, but it all feels like the calm before the storm, compared to volume 10. More pasts are revealed, evil twins are discovered, major characters die (I know death isn't often permanent in the world of Dorohedoro, but it's still a shock at the moment), and the biggest reveal of the series so far happens toward the end.

The proverbial excrement has hit the fan, dead-center, and the results are shocking. Some of these volumes are the easiest five stars I've ever handed out. So good!

Best volume of the series so far, bringing several storylines to satisfying climaxes, especially with Ebisu vs. the copy. Holy shit. Some of the best gore of the whole series as well. Even the back-up story was outstanding, with some great humor.

In a world of strange magic, The Hole is a dismal city neighborhood that is home both to “Magic Users” (Sorcerers) and to people who lack the ability to wield magic. The Sorcerers abduct people to use in their awful black arts experiments. Nikaido is a young woman who hunts and kills sorcerers. Her partner is Caiman, a mutant who has a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. He chomps down on the heads of sorcerers, hoping to discover the one that transformed him. However, this couple has drawn the attention of En, the head Sorcerer and main crime boss. En wants them dead.

Dorohedoro, Vol. 10 (Chapters 56 to 61) opens with a flashback that reveals part of Professor Kasukabe’s past. He worked at the Kasukabe Clinic where he treated victims of magic and also studied the bodies and body parts of sorcerers. Into his life walked Ai Coleman, the young man who wanted to be a sorcerer.

Back in the present, the amnesiac Ebisu begins a trip that will take her to her parents’ home, but she has an unwanted companion in Fujita. The cost of not being wanted for Fujita is a weird battle with Oda. However, Ebisu may need Fujita, as she finds herself seeing double in a way that might destroy her. Meanwhile, a recovered and enraged En searches for Nikaido, and he doesn’t plan on letting Caiman stand in his way.

Series creator, Q Hayashida, is one of the most imaginative artists working in comic books and manga. Her art looks as if the contents of Heavy Metal and Zap Comix were thrown into a blender and the result was a nightmare pesto of crazy black and white comics. Yeah, sometimes, Dorohedoro does suggest the graphical storytelling of Rob’t Williams and Moebius having a knife fight in some alley in Pictopia.

Beyond this manga’s look is a winning cast and a line of intriguing subplots that move through the narrative like a hurricane. Dorohedoro is different, but most of all, it is a reward for the adventurous reader who is looking for the rabbit hole to a comic book wonderland.

Readers who want the darkest dark fantasy and the weirdest weird horror will find it in Dorohedoro.
