Ritsuka Aoyagi is alone in the world—never fitting in at school and alienated from his own past by a fragmented memory. When his beloved older brother is brutally murdered, Ritsuka is heartbroken but determined to find answers. His only lead is Soubi, a mysterious, handsome college student who offers him an intimate link to his brother’s other life: a dark and vibrant world of spell battles and secret names.
Ritsuka’s faith in his older brother Seimei is pushed to the limit when the unit named Moonless reveals sordid details of Seimei’s horrific past deeds. Then, while Ritsuka is still reeling, the unthinkable happens: Seimei returns to reclaim Soubi.
Loveless has to be one of the hardest manga I have ever read. The depth of cruelty that people do to each other, the manipulation and machinations, and the despair thereof make the story a difficult, if compelling, read. But for all that, I can't help but be utterly fascinated and drawn in with each new chapter.
Loveless 11:
The terrible beauty that is the story of Loveless continues in volume 11 - on the 10th anniversary of the title's first appearance in Zero Sum magazine in Japan.
This had to be the most heart wrenching of all the volumes as the story comes full circle. What began with Soubi meeting Ritsuka after school now sees Seimei returning to wreak havoc on Ritusuka as he commands Soubi to abandon his little brother. Does Soubi have the will to refuse Seimei after all his years under Seimei's domination?
Along with the reappearance of Seimei, Ritsuka is slowly given more evidence that his brother is not the saint he believed - and that Seimei has been keeping careful watch on Ritsuka. But Seimei's motives still remain blurry, even to his fighter Nisei.
Loveless is one of those manga that only gets better each time you reread and see the nuances. That is especially true with each new volume as more clues and history are introduced with each chapter.
Loveless is really one of the most profound serials out there - deep, emotional, tragic, terrible. A fantastical study in psychology and emotion that transcends any simple definition; featuring a supernatural theme that plays support character to a compelling main story.
A horrible revelation is made about Seimei in this volume. And Nisei, of course, who I already didn’t really like. But the more I read about Seimei, the more I don’t like. He’s horrible.
Then there’s some really cute scenes between Soubi and Ritsuka, until Soubi does something horrible, goaded by Seimei. It breaks Ritsuka’s heart, and it’s horrible. I don’t like it even a bit, but I also don’t really understand why. Just… why, Soubi?
Then we see Ritsuka’s relationship with Youji and Natsuo. Their relationship is just so great, and I love the way they’re there for him after what happened with Soubi, as well as how what Soubi does hurts them, too.
I just love the relationships in this series. Youji and Natsuo are definitely two of my favorite characters, because they are just so interesting and entertaining. I feel so bad for Ritsuka, and I’m now confused by and unhappy with Soubi. The plot is also thickening in very interesting ways, and I’m interested to see where it goes.
I’m very excited to get my hands on the next volume.
I read this ARC via Edelweiss/Above the Treeline - couldn't wait until June... so happy that Loveless is back!!
Lots of big stuff happens in this volume... Ritsuki learns of Seimei's violent true nature... Soubi and Ritsuka are separated (after some brief intimate moments!!!)... it's weird to see big things finally happening after a lot of drifting around and emoting. Also interesting was the tribute to Zero-Sum's 10-year anniversary, meaning that Loveless the manga was created 10 years ago, and we're only on volume 11... yikes! But as always, the art is beautiful and there was a lot of fanservice/payoff in this volume.
There was a bit of nudity... this is definitely a 16+ manga.
Lovely. I feel like I waited too long to read this. A customer traded me a copy of this, and till then, I didn't realize it had already been released. I quickly took to my eReader to read it. I am falling behind on my manga reading somewhat these days. -------------- This was an enjoyable volume, as always. I sped through it pretty fast, but I enjoyed both the main story and the extra story. I think I enjoyed the extra (10th Anniversary) story most, as it showed the differences between now and 10 years ago. But, I still need Vol.12 soon, y'all. -------------- This volume was provided to me as an eManga by VIZ Media, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Maybe I've grown tired of the endless psychological chat sessions that Loveless enjoys so much, because I did not completely love this volume. I didn't love the pacing and I certainly didn't love Natsuo and Youji, who continue to be terrible. But as far as the plot goes, it's an important volume, and there are moments of brilliance that manage to shine through the clouds.
My complete review of LOVELESS volume 11 can be read here.
EMOTIONS. OH MY DEAR GOD. SLAYYYY. Okay. Now that I'm composed. Somewhat. We learn (more) about how awful Seimei (and Nisei) is. Ritsuka, in his natural state, conflicted. Soubi, adorable and tragic. Youji and Natsuo, amazing and wonderful. (Except, I did not appreciate Youji being so crass with Hitomi. Like. Damn, kid. Way to be sexist as fuck. I know that's his character, but it still sucked. However, Hitomi held her own when he was being a little shit, so hell yeah to that. ^_^!)
TW: rape of a child, violence, unhealthy relationships spoilers, because this is a review
It's weird to drop that kind of trigger warning and say that this is probably the best volume of Loveless so far. That said, it definitely is. The combination of the background for Moonless and their grudge against Seimei -- her violent assault at the hands of Nisei, Seimei's fighter, at his behest -- as well as the defection of Soubi give a greater nuance to the series as a whole. It's just a better volume than most of the preceding ones, and we get a greater idea of Soubi as a character, as well as the motivations of several of the other principal characters.
The additional 10th anniversary special, showing the differences was also a cute tie-in.
Really all I want from this series at this point is for a badass social worker to spring onto the page, manga-style, and dish out restraining orders to pretty much EVERYONE except the teacher and the classmate. That's it. Oh and the guppy, the guppy can stay, too.
I realized I was missing volumes 11-13, so I got them. I also re-read the series before jumping into the unread vols because it's been aaaaaages... I still love the series! And now I also see we still don't know that much more than we did in the beginning of the story. Of course a lot of things have been revealed but nothing truly big besides that Seimei isn't dead.
Speaking of Seimei, here: I'd like to present him the award of the biggest bastard around these parts!
As I was reading, this felt like it was going to be my favorite volume of them all because we got more of Soubi's backstory and his bond with Ritsuka was getting stronger, only for the rug to be pulled under me with the arrival of Seimei. Still, the ending with the Moonless seemed a promise of another climatic battle, so I will like to see their powers and how they will enact their revenge. 3.5/5
“i’m not upset because of what he did, i’m upset he didn’t give me a reason. i asked him why and he said he didn’t have a reason. and that’s why i can’t forgive him”
OH MY FUCKING GOD??? the realness of it??? how is it possible that this manga depicts abuse this well every single time??? like it’s never in a shallow way but in a sadomasochistic real way
The best thing up to this point is how the mom is no longer on sight. a beautiful thing. / don’t do this to my heart… please say no Soubi, say no ): / I’m sad but I know things somehow have to work out

Ok. So. I’m still reading and I am “enjoying” it, but I am like really getting annoyed with Soubi wishy-washyness with him jumping between Ritsuka and Seimei. Like fuck.

That's messed up. Does Soubi not have any will of his own or what? He didn't even look like he fought it. What a britch. Though I do see he is suffering ... still.
previously read October 13 2013. It's still a good story and there are some hints of some small plot resolutions but I am starting to just get aggravated. Please, please, finish this series. Someday?
This was good (even though it broke my heart), but considering that I've only got Vol. 12 to catch up and apparently we won't have Vol 13 yet and the story seems to be going to a place unknown even to the mangaka... Well. I've paused Vol. 12 for a bit.
