When Kyoko’s heart is broken, she decides that revenge is a dish best served in the spotlight!
Kyoko Mogami followed her true love Sho to Tokyo to support him while he made it big as an idol. But he’s casting her out now that he’s famous enough! Kyoko won’t suffer in silence—she’s going to get her sweet revenge by beating Sho in show biz!
Kyoko expected the drama Dark Moon to test her acting talents, but she never guessed that a pro like Ren would have trouble too! Even more surprising, Ren needs her help as a friend. But will her war with Sho and the sudden appearance of a new enemy keep her from Ren’s side?!
Yoshiki Nakamura (仲村佳樹) is a Japanese mangaka. She was born June 17. Nakamura made her manga debut with "Yume de Auyori Suteki" in the manga magazine Hana to Yume in 1993.
I have found a character I hate more than Sho. Reino. Vie Ghoul's (BEAGEL-Sho I agree with you here and only here) lead singer. This man is creepy and evil on many levels. And has some weird obsessions. UGH!!! What is does is sick! And it makes me give a bit of credit to Sho! NOO!!! Can you tell I love to fan over this manga? It is so easy to do. But this one had more negative squirms than usual. It was interesting to learn more about Ren's modeling career as well. Looks like his life is back on track for acting. Bit disappointed in the director for how he handles Kyoko's predicament. He should have held more sway over the situation!
It's always good when you're left screaming for the next volume at the end, right? Lucky thing I'd already order the next 3-in-1 and have it on hand, to start when I'm done with this review.
The revenge triangle has become a revenge polygon!
Content/trigger warning in volume 15, though: stalking and attempted rape. Spoiler warning! But I feel like it's necessary to mention these. There's mild groping and an attempt to disrobe Kyoko.
I greatly enjoy how well the emotions are portrayed. And oooh, I want Kyoko to get revenge on even more people now.
I love e that the feelings are out there, although not to each other. I really like the pieces of Kyoko's nievety and love of fairytales. The beagles tho, gtfo, just come on. I enjoyed that that brought in the topic of women being portrayed negatively more often then men, especially in a he-said-she-said situation. As well as the fact of negative emotions being more powerful to our memories than positive ones.
Book 14 was my favorite. I said this before and I'm gonna say it again but Kyoko is so damn amusing, I just love her character. Sho pisses me off so damn much but. What Sho did in the first book was messed up but as the story continues I'm pretty sure the author is trying to redeem him or something, still don't like him but when he hit Kyoko he definitely knows he f*cked up and went to apologize which ok great but than the ending of the book still reminded me why I hate him with his stinky attitude.
i loved this but just to warn you all that havent read this 3 in 1 edition their is a very creepy guy who tries to sexual assault kyoko but then sho comes in and saves her (which i think is a turning point for him) and Sho also beats the guy up i was happy when i first read this and now that i just finished it i am so happy for 'brother' sho to show up
what i just told reviewed was the last part of the 3 in 1 so it doesnt happen right away but still i thought i should tell you.
Ahhh I was really looking forward to reading this book and then I read the reviews before I started this book and it put me into a slump. I saw a few reviews saying that this book had rape in it and I was so mad because I hate the use of rape in mangas. But luckily for me there wasn't rape, but there was non-consensual sexual touching of Kyoko and the perpetrator was a famous star, that's not Sho, and was like "I'm going to make Kyoko hate me more than Sho so I am going to leak to the press that I raped her and it will tarnish her name. She is so passionate when she hates Sho, so she'll feel that passion for me and she will be mine." The logic of that made no sense for me, but I didn't mind how rape was tackled in this book because there was no rape, but rather blackmail? And I dislike so much when rape is used as a plot device between love interests or love rivals, and this volume didn't have it like that. Mainly because Kyoko doesn't even remotely like the person. I also like how the book clearly shows that Kyoko hated every moment with the people who made her feel uncomfortable because it would show impressionable young readers that this is wrong and not to aspire to be in that situation. I think because of my history of being in situations like Kyoko was in, I really felt Kyoko's fear because I was relating with her.
In Volume 14, Sho does slap and harm Kyoko's face as well. With this plot point I liked the fact that later on in the chapter has Sho regretting for his actions and trying to make amends for it. Whilst I don't like Sho as a character, I liked seeing the message that violence is wrong.
This volume ends the plot line of Ren struggling with his role in Dark Moon and shifts the focus onto Sho and Kyoko. I didn't like the shift because I don't want to see more of Sho and I definitely do not want to see him interact with Kyoko. This volume makes it seem like Kyoko... she doesn't necessarily forgive Sho, but she does help him because she wants to be the only person to take him down so she'll help his career survive to be the one that brings him down by being more famous than him. I sort of get that reasoning, but it doesn't mean that I will enjoy this plot line because Sho is not a likable character and I rather see more plot lines focusing on Ren or Kyoko's friends.
Overall, I was originally going to give this book a 3/5 for the rape aspect but then I realised that this book did make me feel emotions. I got mad and I related to Kyoko. Whilst I didn't enjoy the plot line I am still incredibly invested in the series that I did just spend £76.06 to get the rest of the 3 in 1 mangas, when I should be saving for my summer holiday.
Vol: 13 - We follow Ren's test on the set of Dark Moon, and it was so much fun. Seeing Ren act up a storm before delving into some of his past, so interesting. Also Kyoko and Corn are there to help out.
Vol: 14 - We have the unfortunate meeting between Kyoko and the Beagles (Vie Ghoul) who are out to get Sho, by copying everything about him and stealing his fans, and thus annoying Kyoko who once again faces Sho to tell him what's up, a matter that mildly...okay maybe a but more than mildly, concerns our boi, Ren.
Vol: 15 - Trigger Warning ⚠️ This volume has sexual harassment and assault. This manga may incorporate humour and fun, but this one especially dealt with quite serious topics and they weren't resolved satisfactorily, but it is accurate to the modern society and thus depicts the concerning dynamics of a victim and an assaulter who wields an uneven power dynamic. Also it shows the freeze side of 'fight, flight or freeze' response. I love all the protectors in this though. Kyoko has such a lovable crew around her.
The Dark Moon arc continues in these three volumes. (TW: rape)
Volume 13: Four stars This completes Ren's arc about him figuring how to to play Katsuki.
Volume 14: One star I really dislike Sho and him being so prominent really killed it for me in this chapter. Also, I do not get the purpose of the Vie Ghoul.
Volume 15: One star (If possible I would give this negative stars) Nope to Sho telling Reino (the lead singer from Vie Ghoul) that Kyoko is his (no you little jerk, she is her own person. You do not own her.) Nope to the Reino assaulting Kyoko and threating to rape her. Then, threatening to leak to the press that she was raped all to ruin her reputation (I really don't understand his character or his reasoning. He wants her to hate him so she'll replace Sho with him in her heart. And Reino talking about "polishing her and making it so no man can handle her" was absolutely disgusting.) This is my least favorite volume.
This was very interesting because of the gender roles in the entertainment industry. Despite this being an 'old' manga I can see the same thing happening when an actress would get stalked today.
Somehow it's on her to avoid and deal with the consequences. Her reputation is on the line.
The way Kyoko froze is something many women have felt when dealing with unwanted attention/sexual harassment. And the way she got into fight mode was done in an absurdist way but in reality people will fight for others when they won't for themselves.
(My sentences are hot garbage today *sigh*)
I was very tense during the middle part. Very well done.
I do want to read this again with an fanlation next to me because sometimes those are a bit more nuanced and closer to what the Japanese version tried to convey.
I seriously love this series, but I really do hate Sho so much. Why does he even bother her when he had treated her so badly and casted her aside when she had done so much for him. I seriously love Ren, he is so hot it should be a crime, practically illegal the way he tugs my heart. I also find the new characters to be funny and sort of like them when they are not annoying. Cannot wait to dive into the volume!!!!
The drama, the beagles I'd forgotten them and their copy band. The Dark Moon love scenes and Ren falling! Ahhhhhhh!!!! And Fuwa snapping! It's deliciously complicated and dramatic! Yum! Need the next STAT! *screaming in teen!*
In this 3-in-1, a lot of drama starts to build up. Ren is finally over his slump. Sho and Ren are not sure about how they feel about kyoko. Kyoko gets her very first stalker. This volume has many twist and turns the make you want to read more. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
SERIES REVIEW: (Side note - I have read more than what's official by reading translated online scans, as such my view may be a bit biased based on further plot developments.) Skip Beat is possibly the best shoujo I have ever read! While the art style may throw newer readers off as it is very 90's/early 2000's do NOT let it keep you from giving this manga a try! The characters and plot more than make up for any lacking art. Kyoko is my favorite protagonist I have ever read - book or manga. This is not your typical shoujo by any means. It has romance but focuses more on Kyoko's growth as an individual as well as her determination to find herself. The other characters are not left behind either. They are also constantly growing and changing in different ways giving off such a vibrant and realistic vibe (well mostly realistic-if you have read it you know what I mean) If you are looking for romance, comedy, a shoujo with depth this is the one. While at times the slower romance pace is frustrating the pay offs make it worth it. Instead of a cheap fix so many shoujo manga are doing this is a slow burning master piece. I really cannot give this series enough praise and everyone - shoujo fan or not, manga fan or not - needs to give it a try!
