Sixteen-year-old Julia Corona is a Daughter of Fate, destined to travel through time to battle the creatures of Mythos who seek to change history. Julia would rather use her powers to ditch PE than fulfill her duties as the Daughter of Present, but her best friend Angie, the Daughter of Past, can’t stand the thought of their magic fading away, which is what will happen if they can’t find the third Daughter soon.
Then they discover the Daughter of Future is Kaitlyn, the bullying bad girl who tried to steal Angie’s boyfriend. Suddenly a world ruled by demons doesn’t seem so bad compared to being magically bound to Kaitlyn for the rest of their lives.
Julia is ready to kiss the magic goodbye until she meets Ethan, an intense young man who claims to be her protector and seems to know Julia better than she knows herself. He looks at her with a strange mix of longing and resentment that Julia can’t explain. Before she gets a chance to solve the mystery, the creatures of Mythos strike, opening a portal in Revolutionary France.
The Daughters of Fate must set aside their differences and band together with Ethan to travel back in time to close the portal, but someone close to them will betray them, making their task nearly impossible. The history books are changing, and it may already be too late.
Diana Paz writes books about magic, adventure, and romance, including her YA time-travel series, TIMESPELL. She was born in Costa Rica, grew up on Miami Beach, moved to Los Angeles in high school, and went to college in San Diego. Diana graduated from California State University, San Marcos with a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts. An avid procrastinator, she often wishes she had the power to freeze time. She loves old movies, epic fantasy, all kinds of music, and heading to the beach with a good book. Preferably sipping a highly sweetened iced coffee.
I blurbed this book for Diana Paz, and I was, and remain, flattered to be attached to such a wonderful piece of fiction. The concept, which blends the Fates of Greek mythology with both contemporary California and Marie Antoinette's France, had me salivating from the start. Even though Diana succeeds wonderfully with a unique, ingenuitive plot, the concept didn't even end up being my favorite part of devouring this book.
That's because her characters absolutely blew me away. The story centers around the Daughters of Fate, three modern day girls destined to take over the Fates eternal duties - which also include banishing evil from our realm and protecting the pages of history. The first two girls we're introduced to are Angie, a studiously quiet, loyal friend who has known about her role as a Fate since childhood, and Julia, a more typical teen who's more interested in boys and what the Fate's magic can do for her than saving the world.
In order to come into their magic and be able to keep it, they need to find the third daughter...and soon. When they learn their third is Kaitlyn, their high school's resident mean girl, Angie and Julia both rethink being bound to her forever - except mythological forces have already broken into the human realm in revolutionary France, and if the girls don't find a way to get along for long enough to stop them, the fate of the earth could change for the worse.
The girls are so vastly different but equally well crafted that it's hard to choose a favorite. I'm probably in the minority in favoring Kaitlyn, who certainly does a heck of job making us hate her on the page, but who I came to understand well enough to love. The characters are beautifully drawn, realistic teenagers balancing their real lives with the expectations of their otherworldly duties, and I am so, so impressed with Diana's craft.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there IS a boy, and he IS completely swoonworthy, complicated, and harboring a huge, heartbreaking secret that will leave you salivating for Diana's sequel. I know I am.
I can't recommend this enchanting debut highly enough. If you're a fan of history, mythology, or amazing books in general, you're going to want to pick this up NOW, not later.

I'm going to begin this review by admitting that I am one of the lucky critique partners who read this book several years ago.
That being said, I truly love this book. I reread it last night for the umpteenth time, and I can honestly say it gets better every time I read it.
The story is told in three points of view—Julia, Angie, and Kaitlyn. I thought it would be difficult to differentiate between the three girls, but Diana does a wonderful job of giving them their own voices, which I think is very important in a Young Adult novel. I especially loved Julia’s quirky attitude and Kaitlyn’s tough exterior. Angie is the goody-goody of the novel, and I had more trouble connecting with her, but I think she rounds out the trio quite nicely.
I also loved the magic in this story. I’ve read numerous Young Adult novels that include time travel and magic, but Diana creates this entire world with just a few sentences. I enjoyed getting to watch the girls develop their powers while bonding with each other.
In short, I think this book is amazing from start to finish. Diana captures the history of the French Revolution with ease and infuses her writing with humor and beautiful imagery. The dialogue is often witty, and I laughed aloud several times while reading. Her characters are lovable, the plot is unique--and mysterious!--and I guarantee you'll love it =)
So, disclaimer: I know the author, and I first read this book many moons ago in the rough draft stages. Reading it again after publication was like discovering it all over again, and when I finished I IMed the author and said "So, hey. You're the devil and I want book two now or I'm stealing all the cookies in the world and you'll never have one again."
I was serious about that. The book ends on a note that made my heart hurt in the most delicious ways, and made me want more immediately. That feeling is part of why I read; I love the bittersweetness of it. But skipping ahead to the end is getting a little ahead of myself, so...
Overall, Paz's writing captures the YA voice superbly, with an authenticity that's rare to find. This story is a bit different in that it's told from the POVs of three different girls. You'd think they'd blend together, but Paz makes them so entirely distinct that even without the chapter headings I'd know which girl I was reading within one sentence. Each has a wholly unique personality and style; each has her own appeal, though I took longer to warm up to Angie--but by the end I adored her, and couldn't pick a favorite. Kaitlyn is the one I identify with most, but I admire Angie deeply--but Julia's the one who made me feel the most throughout the book, and the one whose plot engaged me more thoroughly.
Together the three POVs weave a fast-paced story with an intricate plot that still doesn't bog down in the details, and even if Julia can freeze time her story rushes you forward until you can't wait to turn the next page. I'm not normally a fan of time travel stories, but this one captures all the right elements and weaves them together with a plot that places the three Daughters of Fate in charge of protecting the world from an ancient enemy who would use the source of their powers to seize dominion and alter time forever. With a dash of history and a Guardian who just makes me sigh and brings me back to the days of my own high school crushes, Timespell brings it all to the table and still leaves you hungry for more.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hide a certain someone's cookies.
Diana Paz does an amazing job of weaving history and mythology and the present day together. I was fortunate enough to read an early draft and I absolutely devoured every bit of it when it arrived in my inbox!
One of the things I particularly love about Paz's novel is the way she brings three such distinct personalities into play. It feels like there's a Daughter of Fate for every reader to connect with, no matter how different. Each has different challenges they must face, personally as well as together, as they confront the evil powers which are threatening the very world.
And those powers! Diana Paz brings life to the monsters of mythology in ways that have stuck with me long after I finished reading the book! Her descriptions and imagery are perfectly done and evocative.
From start to finish, TIMESPELL is a wild and fun read and a great gateway for exploring mythology and history, both!!
Oh wow, this is one of the prettiest covers I've ever seen! As if Time-Travel, Witches & Paris in the 1700's wasn't already enough to have me drooling for this book...without forgetting Mythology?! I am SO in!

Timespell is a cross between and urban fantasy and a historical novel. It revolves around three different girls who are born to become the Daughters of Fate. We follow these three 16 year old girls as they discover the bonds of friendship and save the world from the Sorceress.
Daughters of the Past, Present, and Future must travel back in time to Pre-Revolutionary France to close off the portal that threatens to undo history as they know it. But first they must accept their fate and chose to join together. This is easier said than done, when it’s discovered that the final daughter is an enemy.
This journey shows us pain, but it also reminds us about forgiveness too. We get to see each girl, and the internal struggles they face as Daughters and as teenagers. They hate, they love, and they find ways to achieve the impossible in both the present and the past.
I loved the historical aspect. What can I say, I’m a sucker for history. Add in some magic and well, I’m there. It was nice to get sucked in, but I really wanted more. I wanted more background on the Daughter of the Past too. Overall though I found the story entertaining and the world is solidly built. If this will become a series, I’ll follow it closely as I’m intrigued to see how it will all play out. Especially after the end, which I won’t say anything about.
Basically, you got your two average girls, Angie and Julia, trying to make their way through the shark-infested waters of high school. They are bound by magic as daughters of fate, each possessing unique powers entrusted to them by the fates themselves (okay so...not-so-average...sue me). BUT there's a problem (of course there's a problem :P). They will lose their magic if they don't find the third daughter before Angie turns 17 (which is like superfast!). Luckily, Julia stumbles upon her quite by accident and (OMG!) it's Kaitlyn, the biggest shark in their high school. If this isn't enough, it's obvious history is crumbling apart. Angst. ANGST! What to do? Save the world or give Kaitlyn the finger? Hmmm... *strokes beard* But wait there's more!
And monsters. Blood-curdling, creepy monsters. Mua ha ha ha ha ha! Granted...not as good as the kissing, but awesome nonetheless.
Much love. So much love for this book.
The pacing is perfect. The threads of honest-to-goodness historical fact interwoven into the story so seamlessly...wow. I cried. Actually cried. Teared up. Grabbed a tissue. Blew my nose. *nods* And Julia's love interest, delish. I could go on and on, but it would really be better if you read it. Trust me. It's freaking fabulous.

This was a pretty good book. I will admit that the "whininess" of a couple of the characters really got on my nerves for a bit, and it was a little slow to get going... but when it got good it was great! I loved the story premise and it was a good start to a new series... but I really hope to see a lot more character development in the girls if I continue the series.

4 Intriguing, Time-Traveling, Mythological Stars!
Timespell was an intriguing read, wonderfully detailed and with an interesting concept on the Fates and mythology. I loved the aspect of time-traveling, the three main characters each had their own personalities and meshed well, even when they were fighting. And that ending! Ahhhh! There better be another book; this better be a series! I want more, and I feel like there's plenty more to tell.
Timespell is not just one character's story; it's three characters' stories! Angie, Julia, and Kaitlyn are all important to the story. I liked how they each had their own personalities. Angie was the quiet, studious, sensible one. Julia is the sarcastic and loyal one, and Kaitlyn is a bitch. No, but really, she is. However, I know there's more to her than the mask she shows the world, than the meanness that hides her true personality (a girl who is more insecure and emotionally unstable than anyone knows). Even when they fought constantly, they meshed well together. And they should, considering the three of them are "sisters" in a sense. They are the Daughters of Fate, and they have an important task. To protect this world from the evil Sorceress and her creatures of Mythos.
This mythological aspect is so intriguing! I want to learn more about it. And I also loved how time-traveling was interspersed in this story, how they used all of their gifts to complete their tasks. How their magic is the strongest when they use it together.
Julia is the Daughter of Present, and she's also got a guardian. A Wanderer. His name is Ethan. When they first meet, Julia feels an intense pull to him, one she can't explain. She has a boyfriend, and here she is daydreaming about a guy she's never met yet feels like she knows. I want to know what's going on and why they have this connection. Although the ending did kind of explain that, I'm still confused. And this is why I feel there should be another book. I don't think it's over, and there is still so much left to tell. Anyway, I liked Ethan's and Julia's relationship. There is definitely chemistry between the two of them (especially that kiss!) but Julia has a boyfriend. Ethan also has secrets, for he acts like he's known her a long time and blames her for him being the Daughters' guardian. Like I said, I want more of an explanation. And I want to know what happened (some of it I understand from the ending, though not all of it).
The plot was filled with so much action, so much suspense and an underlying danger to everything that was happening. Their first task as Daughters is anything but simple and easy. They have no clue how to do this, how to work together and solve the problem as quickly as possible. Add in a Wanderer, Mythos creatures in the past and present, and an evil witch who will do everything in her power to stop them from closing the portal, and the girls are overwhelmed with so much in so little time. They'll have to figure out how to work together, how to overcome their differences and hatred, and become who the Fates meant them to be. They have the power; now they need to figure out how to use it. And use it they will. So much was going on, but I never once felt lost. It was just very action-packed and the pace was set really quickly once you get into the story. It was intense and thrilling, like a friggin' rollercoaster ride!
I liked the author's writing style, and I thought the characters had great development. I loved the mythology, and I really enjoyed the book. Timespell was wonderfully intriguing, and I just want more of these characters and this story.
The thing that drew me in first... the cover. Wow it is so beautiful. I did a cover reveal a while back and knew at that moment, I wanted to read this book and I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a fast read, I didn't want to put it down. I just needed to know what happened next. I liked the story and the plot line very much and found it very different than what is out there right now which was very refreshing for me.
The story is about 3 very different girls, Julia, Angie, and Kaitlyn, who are sisters of fate. Past, Present, Future and they have a job to do... save the past. They each have their own powers and can manipulate time. Of course this sounds exciting, but they have problems from the very beginning. ... Julia and Angie are best friends they get along great but Kaitlyn has always been their enemy, the mean girl. Now they must team up with her and depend on her. Oh and then there is Ethan, the mysterious good looking boy... and of course don't forget, they have no clue what they are doing. So the three end up in France, during the French Revolution and of course nothing is at easy as it should be.
This was a very fun book The writing was fast, I felt it took off from the very beginning and I was quickly into the thick of things. It was easy to get acquainted with all the characters and I was able to love and hate a bit about all of them. The story was very exciting and at times I thought it was predictable but then at other times it caught me off guard. It was a great mix of romance, friendship, history, and action.
The characters really were fun. Each one had their strengths and weaknesses. Angie is a great leader. She had her issues with Kaitlyn before they they became the sisters of fate and she was able to get past it pretty easy to do what she was meant to do. She was very level headed and knew how to hold the group together. Her weakness though... she didn't know how to relax, she was too serious all the time. Julia is well, she is hard to put into words. Her weakness is definitely her heart. She can be very sweet and is there to help when she is needed, but sometimes... her loyalty can get in the way. Kaitlyn is mean, selfish, quite the witch, but she is very fast thinking and even thought I thought she would be the death of them all... she comes around... eventually.
At the very beginning Angie and Julia are already friends and I loved how the third sister just happens to be someone they can't stand and they do what they need to do accept her and work with her. I also like the loyalty and the friendship between the group. They are very dependent upon each other for survival and they embrace that well. Its a great story about loyalty, duty, and friends
The book had many fascinating moments in the present and especially in the past. I loved reading the parts n France int he past. The clothing, the customs, the parties. It was fun. I also really enjoyed the mythical creatures that are thrown into to the mix. This is the book for you if you like historical fiction and fantasy.
The only complaint, and it is truly the only complaint I have about the book, it did feel rushed at times. .I loved the fast paced read it provided but at times I felt a little confused and had to reread a few parts to try to understand where I was in the story. It is not a major flaw, as I still enjoyed the book very much and would be happy to read more if there is going to be more... it just made it a little hard to keep up with.
I really enjoyed it and would love to read more from this author and especially this story... maybe possibly if there will be another???
Timespell is Diana Paz's debut young adult novel that follows three protagonists: Julia, Angie, and Kaitlyn. We enter the story with Julia and Angie looking for the the third Daughter of Fate, who is necessary to seal their magic, or they will lose it when Angie turns seventeen. Julia and Angie have been friends for years, and Angie was raised knowing that she had magic. She has already sealed Julia to her, and they both have been mentored in their magical powers by Indira, a mysterious woman with a great store of knowledge about the Daughters of Fate. Through her, they have learned that their job will be to keep the monsters of Mythos and the Sorceress from destroying time. There have been no Daughters joined together in centuries and much rides on them to complete that magic. When it is discovered that Kaitlyn (the reason for Angie breaking up with her boyfriend) is to be their third – and bound to them for all time – they are less than enthusiastic about joining forces with her and ready to give up their magic. However, the arrival of the mysterious Ethan pushes the girls to choose to join together. What follows is betrayal and a whole lot of drama.
Angie, Julia, and Kaitlyn are typical teenaged, high school girls and all the implications thereof. That is to say, none of them are without their faults. Angie does not want to forgive Kaitlyn, Julia’s commitment to her boyfriend is questionable, and Kaitlyn is a jealous mean girl through and through. Julia and Angie are already best friends, which does not make it easy for Kaitlyn being a part of the group. This leads to an interesting dynamic as the girls have to learn to work together in their assignments from Fate. There are catfights left and right as they make mistakes while learning to use their powers as a team. Most of the chapters are from Angie and Julia’s points of view, but there is enough from Kaitlyn to show why she is the way she is. The girls are interesting and very realistic.
The best part of Timespell is the world-building. Mythological creatures like gorgons and minotaurs, who enter the world through portals to wreck havoc, are great nemeses because the Daughters are unable to kill them with their magic. One of the last Daughters betrayed her sisters and joined forces with the Sorceress. However, the real treat is the way Diana Paz fleshes out this all out. Each scene was vivid, whether it was Venice Beach or 18th Century France. (The novel being yo-yoed between the two is genius as the beach and France are both places that most people dream about visiting.) Details for the clothing and surroundings are expertly described in each scene, past and present. When I was reading Timespell, I felt like I was there and did not want to put it down.
Timespell is a very strong debut that I think will appeal to teens and older readers alike. Even though the drama between the girls was not my thing, I enjoyed being sucked in to the rich world. I think Diana Paz is an author to watch, and I look forward to reading her work in the future.

REVIEW: This was a bundle of fun, three teenage girls given tasks to use magic and fight mythical creatures throughout time? Yep, that’s my kind of story and I really enjoyed the development and challenges each girl had to go through as they learned about their fates.
Timespell follows Angie and Julia, two best friends that discovered their destiny’s as two of the three fates. Their destiny lies with finding their third sister and then they will be given all their powers to fight the evil creatures through out time. But when fate brings their new sister to them, it’s not whom they thought, the mean girl of the school and she’s about to make things very difficult. In the end they must work together to complete their tasks and become the fates they were destined to be.
Julia was my favorite of the three, she is sarcastic, blunt and I felt the strongest out of the three. She really holds her own and is the one that uses her power the most and has more control. Angie is the oldest of the three and the most composed, and conservative, she knows the most about their destinies as fates. Then there is Kaitlyn, the wild mean girl who has never gotten along with Angie or Julia, she is very selfish and not a likable character. They are given tasks as fates to go back in time and stop creatures (monsters of mythos) and evil sorceresses that would alter history. Their first mission takes them to the time of Marie Antoinette and they must protect her and adapt to the time. I loved this little bit of history and how they interacted with her.
The main secondary character is Ethan; he is their protector and someone who can be summoned only by Julia. When we first meet him there is an obvious connection to Julia and I loved figuring out how they connect in the very end. There is also David who is Angie’s boyfriend, who is trying to make up for a very big mistake through out the whole book.
Overall I enjoyed this fast paced fantasy story. The character development is fantastic, the readers really get to see into each girl and understand why they are who they are. My only issue was the drama kind of got annoying, they fought so much that it sometimes got distracting from what they were suppose to be doing. Luckily near the end it lessened but three lead female characters bickering half the time, isn’t very fun to read about. They do have a lot to learn and even from each other, their fate is in their hands and there will always be someone trying to stop them from completing their tasks. There is lots of romance, which at times frustrated me to no end, but I love the spark and chemistry nonetheless.
In the end my favorite part was how each girl was so different from each other, plus they each had a unique power that was seriously needed to fight. I’m hoping there is a second book, but this story does give a satisfying ending that wont leave you hanging. This was a great debut novel from Paz and I look forward to reading more of her work.
RECOMMENDATION: This is a Young Adult that is a whirlwind adventure story filled with magic and romance. Fans of the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand and Everneath series by Brodi Ashton with enjoy Timespell by Diana Paz.
It's been such a long time since I enjoyed a book about time traveling that I'm very, very pleased.
The summary does an amazing job summarizing -so obvious, right?- what the book is about but at the same time it doesn't do it justice. Diana Paz makes an amazing debut novel with Timespell by using all the necessary points to create an awesome book that is not only compelling but also full of potential.
But enough of that, let me tell you a little bit about the plot. If you like mythology then this is your lucky day: Diana Paz keeps the story simple while she submerges us into Julie, Angie and Kaytlin's destiny as Daughters of the Fate. Sweet, easy-going and peacemaker Angie is Daughter of the Past. Protective, strong and independent Julie is Daughter of the Present. Twisted, selfish and annoying Kaytlin is Daughter of the Future. Now, don't make any quick judgement here, everyone of them has issues and like any 16 year old girl they can make mistakes every now and then. But they have deepness and, most of the time, they want to do the right thing for the right reasons.
And what are the Daughters of Fate, right? Well, remember mythology class? Fates are these old ladies -in most versions, at least- that control everyone destiny, our future, but they also protect the past and the present because without them both, our future would be different. And this is were our girls make their big entrance: they fight with their magic - that only works when they are together- evil creatures created by Mythos, whose purpose is to change the past so life, as we know it, will be destroyed.
The coolest thing about this is that the three girls have to travel to the past, exactly to Marie Antoniette's time, just before the French Revolution took place. Now, this is no easy task as you can imagine. If one of them dies then the other two will be stuck in the past forever... and to make things even more complicated, well, let's just say there's some history between Angie and Kaytlin. Bad history. And while Angie wants to protect and fight for the future Kaytlin doesn't make things easy for anyone.
And let's not forget the whole mystery surrounding Ethan, a Wanderer chosen to protect the Daughters who has some unfinished business with Julie as he hints plenty of times. Who is he and why is he so attractive? This question kept me reading non-stop.
Personal opinion: This book just has it all: mythology, France, Marie Antoniette's parties, pretty bowl gowns, romance and drama. And Diana's idea of writing in the three girl's different POV helps the reader to create a bond with them while understanding what moves them deep inside.
I'm not sure there's going to be a second book but if there's is -and I'm pleading here- I would love to buy it and read it. Because Timespell is so rich, so full of twists and potential that it deserves to be has a sequel so we can share another few hours with the characters.
Timespell was truly a wonderful surprise! The cover was initially was tempted me to read it, but I enjoyed the story that was contained within its pages. Combining the elements of time travel and the Fates, Diana Paz does a remarkable job telling the story of three girls who need to go back in time and complete a mission in order to save the day.
The reader is immediately introduced to three very different girls early on in the book - Julia, Angie and Kaitlyn. Each girl is unique, and while the descriptions above (in the summary) are true, there is definitely more to them than meets the eye. I'm not only referring to their abilities, though that certainly sets them apart. What I really mean is that each girl has her secrets and her own story, and it was truly fascinating to get to journey along with each of them and get to know them. While I could tolerate Julia and didn't particularly like Kaitlyn (until something happened that got her on my good side), I think I related the most to Angie because we have similar personalities. There's definitely a lot more to learn (especially about Kaitlyn), so I certainly hope Diana goes into more detail in the next book.
What really makes this novel fun, at least for me, is that the girls get to time travel back in time to France, during the period that Marie Antoinette was alive and the French Revolution was on the brink of happening. I love history and European history is a particular favorite, so this was an instant win with me. There aren't a lot of particulars included in the book (and I do wish that there additional historical details!), but I just love the fact that they had to go back in time and revisit that era.
There's a hint of romance with a boy or two, but since the romance isn't the true focus of this story, I won't dwell too much on it in my review. I did think some parts were extra sweet, while others left a little more to be desired in terms of chemistry. (In case you were wondering, I didn't feel like including the names just so it's a surprise who ends up with who!)
The book ends on a solid note, while also leaving room for more adventures to come for Julia, Angie and Kaitlyn. Diana did a wonderful job combining these three unique characters and coming up with a whirlwind of an adventure for them to embark on. She certainly set the stage for the rest of the series, and I'm eagerly anticipating what's to come.
First off, I have to say this has one beautiful cover, and a premise that catches your attention. Two best friends that seem to be so very different having to find the third one needed to keep the powers that have been handed down from their ancestors. Definitely sounds like it would be a fun and interesting read.
From the beginning, we meet Julia and Angie, they are best friends. The thing is, they couldn’t have been more different. Julia is one those girls who is blunt and sarcastic, my kinda girl. Angie is quiet and much more conservative. Their personalities even each other out. Insert the snotty, better-than-everybody Kaitlyn and you have one trio of the most unconventional set of ally’s. There is history between Angie and Kaitlyn and of course it involves a boy. When does it not?.?. Their past is something that they will have to leave there if they want to keep the powers and carry on their family heritage. All in all, they each have qualities that are likable and some that are not, I mean they are teenage girls. Hormonal and totally different, but I found that they were easy to relate to and I enjoyed each for their own very own uniqueness’.
There are a few secondary character that were part of the bigger picture than I thought they would be at the beginning. Indira was their magic mentor, and a guide to help along to their destiny. She turns out to be a lot more, and not in a good way. Ethan is their Guardian of Time, and he suppose help them on their path and keep them safe. Their is a story between one the Daughters and Ethan and it was beautiful, and all consuming, it left me breathless and heart broken at the same time.
The world building was one that I thought was done very well, with a pacing that was just right to keep my interest till the very end. I am a huge fan of mythology, so the blend of mythology and the history was intriguing to me. These young girls have a rough road ahead. They are the Daughter of the Fates. There is action, creatures that scary, magic, and time travel. The setting in history was beautifully described and easy to visualize. Of course you have villain in all this, and boy Indira certainly turned out be one the worst. When power and control is all that consumes you, it is a scary thing.
Nightspell is a amazingly compelling story of three young girls set to save history from changing everything. One with a magical world that was gorgeous, yet mysterious. It is a perfect blend of romance, mythology and historical fiction all in one, and one that I would highly recommend reading.
'Timespell' is an enchanting young adult fantasy novel that delves into both mythology, magic, and time travel. We first meet Julia and Angie, who have discovered their shared destinies as Daughters of Fate - women who have been selected by Fate to keep the Sorceress in the netherworld and to be keepers of time. There's only one problem - they are missing the third Daughter, and without her - they'll lose their magic forever. After discovering that the third Daughter is a snotty girl from their school, they have no choice but to join with her in order to keep the universe in order as Fate would have it. This comes at no small cost and even entails them traveling through time - back to the middle of the French Revolution and more.
This book was a fantastic novel filled with magic, time travel, and mythology - which intertwined to make a seriously awesome book. The characters each have distinctive personalities - not always nice ones at that - but they were quite realistic and it was easy to feel connected to them. I liked Julia and Angie immediately and, of course, loved to hate Kaitlyn and her bitchy attitude. The mythology behind the Daughters of Fate and their background was really fascinating and I absolutely loved reading about it. I also really loved how the author mixed mythology with time travel - especially involving Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution. That period in history was really interesting and I found that the inclusion of it within the story added an extra layer to the book that makes it unique from others out there. I haven't read many time travel books, so reading about the process and the different things that happen alongside it was intriguing for me. Add in the awesome magic that these girls have and you had me at the description! I really feel that the mixture of these three elements - which are usually separate concepts in books - makes this novel completely different from others in the YA genre. The writing itself was wonderfully done and had an effortless pace to it. There were love interests, of course, and I liked to see how the various relationships played out. Overall, this was an incredible novel and I will definitely be looking forward to reading more of the author's work in the future. Highly recommended for fans of YA paranormal/fantasy fiction and for fans of time travel fiction.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Timespell is a contemporary novel featuring fantastical characters who can travel back in time and wield powers. There are gypsies, fates, gods, a hot guy, arch enemies and historical details. That's Timespell and it's an intriguing, fun read for young adult readers.
Best friends and Daughters of Fate, Julia and Angie, need to find the third daughter through their special abilities in order to complete their trio. When they do find her they're not exactly thrilled. The third Daughter is Kaitlyn, their enemy and this girl is power hungry--the opposite of the others. The two best friends, aware of their powers since childhood, have joined together and share this cool telepathic link. When the trio joins, they receive their first assignment and it's incredible. They need to hinder mythological monsters (yep, monsters) from impacting time. There's a portal, mythological creatures and gods, revolutionary France and more.
And since this is a tale with three female teen protagonists, there is the typical teen girl behavoir. Bickering, jealousy, petty actions and betrayal to fill out this entertaining novel. I was impressed by all that author Diana Paz achieved in this first novel. Mixing historical moments along with contemporary girls with attributes of fantasy and mythology was quite a feat. I liked Timespell and recommend it whole heartedly. The pacing was constant, the trio kept things interesting, the monsters were creepy and the time travel aspect was very cool. Did I mention the hot guy named Ethan? Read Timespell and let it weave its timeless magic around you. (http://www.readergirlsblog.com/2013/0...)
imespell tells the story of the Daughters of Fate, three girls who have the power to control time. I have read a ton of YA books that have Greek mythology influences. Timespell uses the three fates as well as monsters such as the minotaur and gorgons. It is a different usage and was really creative. There are only so many demi-god stories that can be told.
The three main characters Julia, Angie and Kaitlyn were fantastic. They each narrate the story from time to time, in third person which made it easier to understand. I enjoyed that we the reader were able to connect to each of the girls. Each character had a biased feeling about the other two so it was nice to not out rightly love one character and hate another for the entire book. I did enjoy Julia's story more than the others. The romance between her and Ethan was focused on more and I love a love story. I was confused about the time travel and their love especially at the end.
I think this story concluded in a nice was with there being no cliff hanger. But I don't think this plot and conflict was resolved so I am hoping for a sequel. I think this book is great for fans of adventure stories. This book is fun and exciting. It is a page turner that you will want to finish in one sitting. It has a lot of drama between the three girls and their love interests. I really need a sequel. I want to know what happens between Ethan and Julia desparately!!
I won this book in Facebook from another author. I'm so glad I did. I'm not one who likes to read about witches & Greek mythology unless its Nora Roberts. This was so well written I felt like I was watching a movie in my head as I was reading. It's so well & vividly written. I love that the three girls are Latina and each has a strength.
I love the three girls Angie, Julia and Kaitlyn. Well I wasn't a big fan of Kaitlyn. She can be quite annoying and mean in the beginning. Angie and Julia are bound together by their magic. The girls each have their flaws, they can be insecure but when they connect they are strong. Kaitlyn is very secure and sure of herself. But there's a secret she has that's not really revealed. I'm hoping that it's revealed in another book and something is done.
The girls face monster together and time travel. I never thought I would like a book about time travel but I couldn't put this book down from the very first page.
I wanted to get Ethan's point of view from the beginning but I guess we couldn't because of the secret revealed at the end.
I'm hoping for more of girls adventures and see if how they bond with everything they face together. I want to see what happens to Ethan in the future. I almost finished this book last night but I was practically in tears and had put it down. Of course after reading one more chapter.
This is a YA romance fantasy. I would highly recommend this book to anyone of any age.
Sixteen-year-old Julia Corona discovers she's a Daughter of Fate, destined to battle Mythos creatures through time to protect history. Reluctant to embrace her role as the Daughter of Present, she'd rather use her powers for simpler purposes. Her best friend, Angie, the Daughter of Past, is determined to find the third Daughter to prevent their magic from fading away. When they discover that Kaitlyn, a former adversary, is the Daughter of Future, they face a challenge—being magically bound to someone they don't like.
Things take a mysterious turn when Julia meets Ethan, who claims to be her protector and harbors conflicting feelings toward her. Before they can unravel this enigma, Mythos creatures strike, creating a portal in Revolutionary France. Now, the Daughters of Fate, joined by Ethan, must put aside their differences to close the portal. However, betrayal lurks among them, and the history they know is at risk of being rewritten. Time is running out.
The initial experience with this book left me somewhat bewildered. The narrative and plot felt somewhat disjointed, and as a reader, I was abruptly thrust into the chaotic world of the story. While the overarching concept and storyline held potential intrigue, it struggled to fully engage me with the characters.
**3 Stars** I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour.
Timespell is written from three different perspectives - Julia, Angie, and Kaitlyn. I'm not normally a fan of jumping books, but the author did a good job with this one. We really did need all three perspectives to get the full picture of what was going on. Although, there were some confusing parts and the ending was really confusing. I'm not quite sure what happened, but am guessing more will be explained in the next book.
I liked Angie's character the best. She isn't the typical cheerleader that you hear/read about. She is petite and a very nice person. Kaitlyn is what you think of when you think typical cheerleader. She is the popular girl who lords it over everyone. I just couldn't tell if we were supposed to hate her (like I did), or because of one chapter, if we are supposed to feel bad for her. You get a glimpse as to why she is the way she is, but then with everything she does after you forget it.
Good time traveling book. Will be reading the next one. Recommended for transition from Middle-grade to Young Adult age group.
I love books that weave together history and fiction...and then you add in the mythology of the Fates...perfect. (From loc 1060)"Every time the creatures of Mythos kill, the Sorceress becomes more powerful. And history is being altered, little by little, until the world becomes a completely different place."
In Timespell, the daughters of Fate travel back in time to Marie Antoinette's France--to the riots, the masquerades, and the people. It's a gorgeous setting and there is plenty of action as they battle monsters and mortals. There are also glimpses of a deeper mystery involving Julia and a love interest...one that will leave you invested and hoping this is a series and wondering how it plays out. I'm not sure when the next one comes out--though I hope there is one--I'm anxious to see what happens to Ethan...he's fantastic. : )
Here are a couple of my favorite quotes:
(loc 1920)
When they were gone she turned to face Kaitlyn. "This isn't a game."
"Good thing, because it's boring as hell."
(loc 3675)
Julia stumbled back. Why did every other creature have to be a mutant snake?
I have so many great things to say about this book!
Rich with conflict and captivating characters, TIMESPELL is a YA novel I won't soon forget. Great pacing. Vivid writing. Distinctive, larger-than-life characters. Humor sprinkled throughout. I loved this fresh take on everything magic. I didn't want to put it down for anything!
I appreciated how each character in this novel was so real, so unique. Julia has serious spunk, personality and strength. Angie is so incredibly sweet and Kaitlyn is anything but. Oh, and super-cute Ethan? I hope Diana Paz writes an entire novel about him. The time-crossed lovers in this novel really sucked me in. I can't wait to read the sequel!
Magic, romance, time travel and adventure...this novel will sweep you away.
Enjoyable. There's a lot going on at once, and while it sometimes becomes almost overwhelming, I suspect much of that was due to the time of day I was usually reading. This isn't a right before bed sort of book. This is an immerse yourself kind of book. It was far more enjoyable once I had time to sit down and really get into it. The pov shifts a bit more than I'd like, with slips even within chapters sometimes, but that's a pet peeve of mine.
Still, I'll read more. The world concept on this is one I enjoy, and I don't dislike anything really. I just didn't fall in total love with it either.
The mixture of classical mythology, 18th century France, and the modern characters, was seriously enjoyable. The concept of the Daughters of Fate is a very interesting twist on the "supernatural hero" that has been a popular trope recently. The three main girls were really well-developed characters, and there was definitely a sense that they have a long way to go, and a lot more to learn. The other characters, particularly Ethan, were also fun to read. I won't give the game away here, but there were a couple of reveals that had me gasping!!
I just kept thinking "Charmed". Three girls destined to become sealed to one another upon their seventeenth birthday or their magic is lost forever; "sisters" and "daughters of Fate", witches, time travel, spells of persuasion, invisibility, and crazy Greek Mythos creatures. An entertaining read with a touch of romance and history. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to any junior high or high school student. A completely clean read as far as context and language goes.
An entertaining story with a whole of magic, some history and romance. The story is told in three points of view, which I thought would be confusing, but the author does an excellent job of giving each girl her own voice.
