Doctor Lynn Davis is kidnapped by handsome Lord Kyle von Talion and taken to a far off planet, Saldiora. As she finds herself in this unfamiliar culture, she must learn to fight with a sword, ride a talking horse, and endure the politics of a royal court if she is to survive. Kyle has his hands full keeping Lynn from making cultural blunders and ensuring her safety. The Juntu's are plotting to take over Saldiora and consider Lynn to be a threat to their success. Will Lynn live long enough to fulfill her destiny and save the kingdom of Saldiora?
This is the strangest book I've EVER read ... but in a good way.
The story is quite promising and I must say that at first I found it a little bit strange that Lynn didn't have many questions about her abduction. I mean, you're kidnapped and they tell you will be trained and you just accept it? That seemed a bit unusual.
But... The trip in Destiny was epic! the construction of the ship, the weird stuff, the food, everything! In addition, the crew was excellent.
I would keep talking over the story but I don't want to do spoilers. This is a novel that promises much and is very well narrated, so it's not hard to read, but you get caught and will not let you stop reading. I hope the author continues with this series because I want to know what comes next, I don't want to lose the next adventure!
I won this book on Goodreads and I thank the author for this but that didn't influence the review.
While it is true that the book can be read allegorically, it is a treasure all unto itself. About the protagonist, Lynn Davis, I would like to say she is whiny, she is despondent, she is pessimistic, she is complaining, she is miserable at times but later turns out to be a strong and interesting character.About Lord Kyle, I have to say that I was falling for him :D. My favourite character in the book was Brigieta :D. So what is the book? It's a page-turner, crazy idea-filled (as all sci-fi should be) thrilling, thoughtful, powerful, funny, poignant novel. It is an excellent piece of writing that would leave SALDIORA darting through your mind. The book could be considered both science fiction and fantasy and even a pretty good romance ! My only problem is with the cover which could have been more interesting and the pace of the story in the first few chapters which seemed a bit slow but later this book was actually unputdownable.I struggled with the first half of the book but finally got into it and the second half was just amazing with all tantalizing ingredients. And whatever you glean form the story, fantasy or otherwise, its a sweet tale for children and adults alike which I would like to re-read someday. Waiting for the second book !
The one regret I have from reading this book is not reading it sooner. Why didn't I? I received it like a month ago in the mail, but I haven't got to reading it. I know it's summer and all, but then y'all know, summer can busier. Like even my weekends are taken. :( Well. Either way, super glad I did read it~ :D Since I took so long to read and review it, I'll make this review especially juicy. <3
At First Glance: I really didn't think this book would be that appealing. Like the teaser didn't take hold of my attention and twist it until I had to open the book. The cover? Well, at first, I thought the cover had nothing to do with the book. It obviously had something to do with the title though. Hehe.
The Characters/Summary: Lynn Davis - Lynn was a great protagonist. But she's so old! At least to me. She's too old to be single. LOL. I dunno much about her looks though. The author didn't describe her that much. All I remember is that she has red hair. And I kind of like it like that. The reader can imagine how they look. Not everything is about looks. Unless you're reading new adult romance. LOL. :) She may or may not be a princess. < This just says so much. But then.....well, I can't really say I'm spoiling the book. You'd kinda get a hint while reading. At first, I thought Lynn cried too much. She did cry a lot. But then,s he was like kidnapped from her home, soo..... But then she got better. And became stronger. She stood up to brats and all. :)
Kyle von Talion - I love their sexy last names. Lynn's is von Astrium. It's just so sexy. LOL. And Kyle. I dunno his age but he has this cool energy around him. I just like guys with high authority. Especially the medieval novels. Or novels with royalties.
Of course, there's got to be a spoiled brat princess, who also may be evil. This just kind of reminds me of this Chinese drama I finished not long ago. Ohmergerd. Except the girl wasn't a lost princess. And the guy was actually the king's younger brother. That drama tho. My feels. And the guy's cute too. Ohmergerd. Okay. Back to the book.
Destiny's Flower also kind of reminds me a bit of The Selection. Or actually a lot. Because, the ten girls are in a competition to marry the prince. And each girl were picked from the ten houses. Von Talion. Von Astrium. etc. Yep. And in a way, both America from The Selection and Lynn got special connections. Ish. They just have more of a chance to win than other girls. Probably because they're the main character.
Final Thoughts: Overall, this book. Great for medieval fans~ Over here!! And there's some romance definitely. Although they don't do anything. I'm debating about the love triangle though. I don't know. I think the second book would give us waaay more information.
Really can't wait for the second book~ :D You can find out more about Destiny's Flower @ www.rosebuz.com.
It’s not often you get a science fiction-romance hybrid, but judging by Destiny’s Flower, the first in the Saldiora series written by Linda Harley, they should be a more common occurrence. Fun, exciting and ever so magical, this book is fresh and intriguing. Kick back, relax and let yourself be taken on a new kind of adventure…
Lynn Davis, a professor of Biomedical Engineering, is abducted mid-lecture by the noble Lord Kyle Von Talion and taken onto a spacecraft. She is driven to use every ounce of her cunning and physical strength to endure the situation, but she finds friends among her captors. From there she is deposited on the beautiful planet Saldiora to take part in a customary ‘beauty gala’ where ten prospective queens are trained to be worthy of the prince.
But there is something special about Lynn and many people are suspicious about her otherworldliness. Lynn is hardy and determined to fulfil her destiny on this planet, but first she needs to understand what that is. And what is the significance of the locket her grandmother gave to her? And why does such a technologically advanced culture still use slaves? And . . . do the horses actually talk?
As Lynn fights to defend her life in this strange new culture she meets many wonderful and highly colourful friends, and handful of vicious enemies, along the way. In Saldiora, Harley has created a world you’ll yearn to return to time and time again.

4.5 stars Thank you to the author and Goodreads for this giveaway. This book was really good. I liked the cover and inside the book, the storyline was unique. It was a mixture of fantasy and science fiction with not that much romance which was good. The ending for this book is leaving me wanting more! Each of the characters within this book are unique and different than your average character. They have names that you would not expect and this makes them different. Each of them has their own story and this makes the book exciting. I just hope Tristyn is going to star a lot more in the second book. And I hope Lynn goes out with Kyle because that would be good. Thank you so much for this giveaway and I hope that there is going to be a second one soon!
Interesting story by first-time author Linda Harley. She has created an exciting new world, populated with royalty, talking animals, new technologies and a rich history. The world Saldiora has many traditions and customs, some of which are irrelevant to the competitions at hand. I particularly liked Harley's way of weaving details into the story that seem inconsequential until much later. The resolution of the layers of intrigue leave the door wide open to many books in the Saldiora story. I'm looking forward to the next volume.
That book's amazing! Though half of the time I was chanting under by breath who I want Lynn to end with. And romance. I wanted romance so much and got none! Just one sentence!
But still, not really disappointed.
There're times I laughed and times I wanted to cry. And times I smiled knowingly and people around me looked at me like I'm an not from this planet. Haha, got the joke?
Book two can't come soon enough. Ahh, I hate cliffhangers!
This book started out oddly, but I fell in love with it. The plot really kept me going. The characters are lovable and heart-felt. It was definitely a gripping tale. The only thing that's driving me nuts is that the book ended on a cliff-hanger, when I thought it would be answering a lot more questions.
I don't usually go for sci-fi books, but mixed with the fantasy element the final product was surprisingly good, and I can honestly say there should be more crossovers between the two.
I thought that the book was well developed and written so that the different genres didn't clash, but instead they complemented each other and created a really unusual romance book.
I was not sure what this book would be like, and was still uncertain even after I got hold of a copy. It was a genre I was not only unfamiliar with, but one which I refused to explore. In short, science and fantasy fictions were not my choice genres, yet, it turned out to be the first novel which has been appreciated by almost the entire members of my family - from two teenagers to one in mid-thirties to another in mid-forties.
Destiny's Flower, the first book in the Saldiora series, by debutant writer Dr. Linda Harley is about a biomedical engineering professor Dr. Lynn Davis who is kidnapped by the noble Lord Kyle Von Talion and his companion while delivering a college lecture where no one is paying attention, and taken to a far off planet. By a quirk turn of fate, she landed on a magical planet with its colorful culture and adorable inhabitants. Welcome to Saldiora - the planet where horses can talk, plan, aid riders, have servants and enjoy the status of a noble. Lynn has to take part in a customary `beauty gala' where ten prospective queens from the ten founding houses of Saldoria are trained to be worthy of the title.
The beauty contest is no ordinary one. They were competing for the coveted title of the Queen of Saldiora. With the stakes high, the training was vigorous and the methods adopted by jealous competitors are on the edge of madness. But to fulfill her destiny, Lynn must learn sword-fighting, ride a horse that can talk, and play by the rules of the game. And she is no push-over either - feisty, strong-willed and determined. But will she succeed? And what is her destiny? Who is she really?
But there is one vicious beauty who is out to destroy Lynn - Brigieta. She believes Lynn could be the true heir to the throne. And Brigieta is not the first in line to represent the von Neashop house for the beauty gala. In a strange coincidence, her older sister committed suicide the day before the competition. But is Brigieta really who she is making out to be? Or is she from the Juntu family out to destroy Saldoria?
Destiny's Flower is a fabulous story with an exciting mix of the ancient and modern. It is comfortably paced and the author uses situations in the story to explain the world of Saldiora and some of the wonderful creatures on it. It is packed with action that keeps one leafing page after page.
What is especially interesting about Destiny's Flower is the author's creativity in creating such lovable and believable characters. While the two main characters are a study in contrast - Lynn is head-strong and does what she feels right but Kyle is strong, kind, intelligent and caring, the supporting characters are very unique.
In fine, I would like to stress that Destiny's Flower is a real treat not just for sci-fi and fantasy buffs, but also for general fiction lovers as well. The story is well paced, the land of Saldiora magical, the culture mystifying, the people adorable, the villains purely evil and the supporting characters unique. The book won't be a disappointment. The plot is thick with suspense. There's never a dull moment. If you plan to buy one book purely on the basis of its fun and entertainment value, just grab a copy of Destiny's Flower!
Biomedical Engineering professor Lynn Davis is interrupted during a physics class by two strange guys a la Star Trek. She is startled and grips a special locket sent by her grandmother with a specific yet vague note just the day before…but it’s no ordinary locket. Indeed, it’s some kind of transmitter – and engraved with a saying, Piapish Mishtum (Seize Life).
Lord Kyle von Talion kidnaps Lynn and transports her to the battleship Destiny. They’ve abandoned a battle and traveled secretly through dangerous territory Juntu to get to Earth and retrieve Lynn for her help. Very much like Star Trek, given they’ve “dropped out of warp and locked a target.”
As soon as Lynn’s aware, she realizes her locket is missing…and Kyle reveals that the term Piapish Mishtum von Astrium was picked up by Destiny just days prior. And then they’re hit! Seems they didn’t sneak through Juntu space without being detected. Lynn escapes via the ventilation system, but only succeeds in pointing out a flaw in the Destiny‘s many technological systems…and getting stuck. She ends up landing on unbeknownst Prince Tristyn (von Feol) and threatening him.
No one has ever brought an Earthling before the court as a beauty.
Lord Kyle and scientist Dloakar put Lynn on cleaning duty, which leads to an unexpected attack. Kyle and Lynn escape, with Lynn firing the turret. They land rather late on Saldiora for the generational Beauty Gala, a ten-month competition of ten female unmarried female contestants. All ten contestants from the ten founding houses of Saldiora are given gifts and monies by a sponsor for their needs in the contest. They are all vying for the envious position of marrying the crown Prince OR Princess (in this case, Trystin) and becoming queen. The new royal couple would then be responsible for producing the next heir to the throne, and overseeing the Beauty Gala for their child’s prospective spouse. In this way, the royalty is not patriarchial. Nor is it exclusive; it can transfer houses.
Lynn makes some blunders in her first days, not being accustomed to social etiquette of the Saldioran culture. She is confused about the competition and has many questions about it – and her sponsor, who wants to remain secret, providing information through Kyle as an informant. Lord Kyle reveals information about the houses, the history of Saldiora and the unfulfilled prophecy.
All the while, there is another contestant who suspects Lynn’s true identity, which Kyle is trying to keep secret until the right moment, and this sinister beauty is out to destroy Lynn. Both of Brigieta’s space attacks have already failed, but she must succeed because if not, Lynn could be the true heir to the throne. It’s no coincidence that Brigieta’s older sister, first in line to be the beauty representative from the von Neashop house, “committed suicide” the day before the competition. Brigieta already harbors plans of offing Prince Tristyn and her grandfather. But Brigieta is not who she is making out to be either, and there are a handful who know so – and one who seems would use this information to his gain, if need be.
Despite this, Lynn has a few memories and stories of Saldiora from childhood. There are only nine families left of Saldiora – the Astrium couple of the tenth house supposedly fled into the stars. The prophecy is that the princess and heir to the throne will return with a book History of Kings. Due to the strange circumstances and limited information anyone will give Lynn, she uses her one request of King Eber to have unlimited access to the royal library to do some studying…and more digging. Needless to say Lynn sticks out like a sore thumb in Saldiora, from her beliefs and attitudes, to her looks and dress. She must learn to play the game if she wants to prevail...and live to tell the tale.
The ending is definitely a cliffhanger – but in a good way! I can definitely see this book being made into a movie – Hunger Games style, following the book in the right way.
Overall, I found this book a great read. Their was enough suspense to keep readers engaged, especially with Lynn breaking Saldiora “traditions.” Lynn is a very strong character – a strong woman. She defies the small-mindedness of Saldiora, questions the “traditions,” and protects the slaves that are given to her. And that brings up another thing: she refuses to admit that the slaves given to her (Lunu, Williamson, Marvis and Jael) are slaves. Instead, she sets them up with their own banking accounts and pays them quite a fair wage – and she calls them her friends.
The one thing about Lynn’s character that I didn’t like, and that didn’t quite fit with her personality displayed throughout the book was at the beginning once she’s captured and aboard Destiny. She does escape through the ventilation of the ship, but once she’s found she just gives up, admits defeat and goes along like a little puppy dog. She doesn’t demand answers to her questions, she doesn’t know why they want her, she really doesn’t know what they’re going to do to her. And she just goes along with it. Later in the book she is defying the queen and the tribunal to escape the palace (for a good reason!) and is pretty set to do things her way.
Lord Kyle is an interesting character. His lineage has sworn to protect the von Astrium heir – and he thinks it’s Lynn. For someone of the court, and especially someone on the tribunal, he is very familiar with Lynn – maybe overly familiar. But in his heart he so strongly believes she is the heir, he is trying to prepare her to succeed in the Beauty Gala before they even reach Saldiora. He does everything he can to help her, and comes to her rescue a few times. There are a few moments that make you wonder...
When I was about to start reading this book, I really had no clue or notion on how I'd react to it at all. It was part modern-day Earth infused together with a medieval structured galactic empire. Well, I am happy to say that I LOVED this book through and through. From the moment Lynn was dragged away from the only place she new, I was hooked.
Lynn Davis is your everyday doctor and college professor. She planned her normal life on the normal Earth, and was never expecting to be kidnapped right in front of her class full of witnesses. Who would? But these aren't normal kidnappers, and they hardly think of themselves as kidnappers as well. Kyle von Talion, Lord of the House Talion, has swiped her from earth and shipped her off to Saldiora--part of a planetary empire in space. Lynn has no way of contacting home, and zero chance of escape. Staying on this ship is dangerous enough, but getting off means certain death If only there were signal in space, right? Kyle reveals to Lynn that she has been chosen as one of the ten "beauties" of Saldiora, who will compete for the chance to be the King's wife and the Queen of Saldiora. There isn't a choice for her. Lynn can't go back to Earth, and the only way to make any sort of living for herself in a completely foreign culture is to enter the competition floor.
Destiny's Flower is like a mix between The Selection and Star Wars to me. I loved both of the two plots in this book. Lynn is such a feisty and intelligent woman (she's a doc, remember?) and I loved reading from her point of view. Linda Harley has such wonderful pacing, and she shows the reader her world slowly, but steadily as Lynn herself is learning about the culture as well. Seemingly medieval, Saldiora is actually highly evolved and technological--all hidden behind a facade of courts, kings, and ladies. Lynn is so adaptable in this book, and it was interesting to see her handle completely odd situations. As a beauty, she can only do ridiculous things like wearing white dresses and observing an hour of silence each day at dusk to contemplate her current life. She feels like an oncoming whirlwind about to blow throughout the Saldiora scene, and I can feel her growing importance in what is coming in the next books.
Enemies in disguise to Lynn are the Juntus, a corrupted family seeking power and wealth, and of course, the throne. Knowing that Lynn has a secret heritage firmly attached to Saldiora before even she does, Brigieta von Juntu is deployed by her family to "take care of Lynn" and kick her out of the competition. I hated Brigieta and her family in an indescribable way, and while I was reading all I wanted to do was punt each and every one of them a few times on the head. Despite my hatred, I had to pity Brigieta a little though, because she never understood what true familial love is.
Kyle con Talion. Yum. At first, I did not like this boy at all. He kidnapped Lynn, dumped on her that basically the life she knew was over, and said "oh by the way, I'm supposed to protect you in this competition." But he and Lynn were undeniably attracted to each other more and more as they spent time together. He is such a sweet and protective character, and an all around good guy. This is causing awkward situations with the competition though, since Lynn is supposed to be pining for the King. I can't wait to see more development in their relationship in books to come as well.
This book is full of action and suspense! The character development is great as well, and the narrator really shows that you can just be yourself no matter where or what situation you are in. Not many people have heard about this yet, but I think it is absolutely wonderful. I definitely recommend this to all Sci-Fi and Fantasy lovers! You will be seeing odd things in this book like horses talking...but that just makes it all the better ;). Ever since I finished this, I've been scrounging for more info on Book 2, but unfortunately I have dug up nothing so far. I can't wait for the next installment, despite not knowing when it will be out. Can't wait!
It took me a really long time to finish this book. Longer than I usually finish 300-page book that is. The main reason for that is the full on info dump in the first few chapters. I rarely read sci-fi because this is what I usually get. I wasn't eased into the story. I had a hard time keeping up with all the names and terms that they used that I wasn't interested enough to finish it immediately. All the time they spent on their spaceship, Destiny, was really dragging for me. I just kept reading without fully knowing where the story's headed. It took me a while to get a hang of everything but I eventually found myself enjoying it. However there was still this one factor that bothered me all throughout the book: character development.
Lynn Davis is a genuinely good person. She tried her best to be polite and to treat Saldiorans with respect and equality. There were customs that had to be followed but she took it upon herself to change those that she felt could use a bit of improvement. Inasmuch as I liked how good she was I also had a big problem with how good she was. From the moment she was kidnapped to the moment everything about her true identity was unraveled, Lynn Davis was too good. She was so resourceful that she was able to use random items in Kyle's bedroom to help her in escaping. She was able to learn how to fire machine guns on a flyer. She led her team of slaves in rescuing a kidnapped person. She's... all that. But what really irked me most was how it didn't seem like she had a hard time accepting everything that has happened to her. She didn't freak out so much upon learning of the existence of Saldiora. She barely flailed when she was being taught how to work the big gun. She was just too good! I couldn't find a single flaw on Lynn Davis except for probably her stubbornness but nobody complained about that because it made her do incredible things that endeared her to them eventually. I have no problems with characters who are kickass and all that. But I don't like characters who are nearly perfect. I have to see some kind of flaw. At least give the character some space for growth.
None of the other characters stood out except maybe for Brigieta and it was only because she's evil. You can't go wrong with villains. But the good guys? They weren't as appealing. Take Kyle for example. I didn't see what made him so handsome. I couldn't even remember if there was enough physical descriptions of Kyle (wait, I can't remember if Lynn's appearance was thoroughly described either). I thought there would be some sort of connection between him and Lynn but apparently I was wrong. He was just... meh. The only other character I found intriguing was the prince but he didn't have that much exposure. He'll most likely have a bigger role in the sequel.
Despite all of that, I still found some redeeming qualities. I don't always enjoy stories told in the 3rd person POV but I've got to say this was written rather well. The transitions, whenever the focus of the chapters would switch between the different characters, were smooth. You'll just have to get past the info dump in the first few chapters to really appreciate the storytelling. I also liked the world building. While it slightly reminded me of The Selection by Kiera Cass with the competition for the prince's heart, the premise was still enjoyable because of the world Harley created. It was a combination of Star Trek and Star Wars with a cool Saldioran twist. If there's something I couldn't get enough of, it was everything about Saldiora. I also like how the ending leaves you intrigued and interested in what happens in the next book.
So. Would I recommend this sci-fi novel? Sure, especially if you're into that genre. I might've had problems with the characters but maybe it was just me. The beginning was a bit rough but once you get past that, you'll enjoy the rich culture and well-thought-out world of Saldioria. You'll find yourself enjoying it just like I surprisingly did.
(I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is based solely on my opinion.)
First things first. The story in it's self, the "abducted" girl from earth, taken to a foreign planet having to adopt their customs only to find out she actually is, in some part on of them; I like. It fascinates me and it's interesting to read about.
The problem on the other hand is the way the story is manufactured and portrayed. It takes to long to get to the point that it's actually exciting. A normal reader (apparently announcing myself to not be one) would have tossed the book away during the first 50 pages. Me, I like to finish what I've started and by all means, I'm glad I did. Plus, this was sent to me as a giveaway and I feel I owe it to the author to give my honest thoughts about it.
I also found that the book lacked good descriptions of the characters. I have troubles picturing a lot of them and I don't feel any relations to them either. A good book will have you turn the page when something happens to "the good guys" in fear of their lives. I got none. Someone dies, nothing. The thrill of a situation doesn't get to me, I can't feel it. The only relationship that got to me was the one concerning Brigieta. She annoyed me and left me thinking of one of the step-sisters in Cinderella.
I also found the description of the book a little misleading. The fact that she is "kidnapped by handsome Lord Kyle von Talion and taken to a far off planet" make it sound like some weird erotica novel. Nowhere in the start of the book is it even expressed that Lord Kyle is so fantastic handsome and neither does it seem to affect Lynn in any way it seems so I don't really see the point of having this pointed out. The fact that Lord Kyle apparently is handsome, having all the girls drooling over him isn't pointed out until later in the book, which I still find weird. The whole thing makes Lynn come off as a teenager; making it hard to believe she is a professor in Biomedical Engineering. But then again, the whole Lynn person annoy me. She's just not believable as an actual person. And she seems to adjust certain situations to well and behaves one way in some situations and then too different in others. Doesn't this person have any sensations of the reality in situations? Does she lack social antennas? And why isn't anyone telling her anything? As for Kyle that is, what's with all the secrets? What's the point? Annoying!
As for the main character she has a personality which you can't find in other books written today. It's like it some sort of trend or something, I had the same irritation concerning the main character when reading the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, and have heard similar irritations from friends that have read the Twilight books too. Oh well.
Last but not least, there were quite some spelling mistakes throughout the book, and some strange sentence-structures. Mistakes happen, of course but shouldn't be out in a published book. I tried to look for any signs for a proofreader and found none. Something to consider.
So, all that being said (or rather written) I should mention something about the next book, shouldn't I? Will I read it? Probably. I'm curious how the competition is going to continue, and how it will end. I just hope that Lynn doesn't end up having to much impact concerning the competitions participants (Didn't really see why she got to express her meaning concerning the first to leave).
I got the book sent by the author in exchange for an honest review so that doesn't affect my opinion in any way. Let me start off by saying that even though this is a whole new genre to me, I did enjoy the book. Because this is surely not a YA. The main character is a Doctor who teach at a college and she was like twenty-seven so I thought this would be a pretty tough read and yep, I was having trouble fitting into the story at first, as well as the we-could-just-say alien characters, which had a unique names and different lifestyle despite their human physical appearance. But eventually, everything falls right into it's place and the more page I turned, the more interesting they all became.
After being kidnapped without so much of an information, Doctor Lynn Davis were forced to learn the Saldioran culture and tradition because everything in that planet wasn't like what it seems. Saldiora was technologically better than the earth, but things like slavery still existed, the customs were unbelievably strict it feels wrong and she was somehow destined to be there for a change. With the help of her friends, she uncovered the kingdom's truth and secrets buried years ago. As she made her way through all that, the Juntus, knowing that Lynn would be their biggest threat to destroy the kingdom of Saldiora, came right into the planet to kill her and Lord Kyle von Talion, as her protector, would do anything to keep her safe 'cause keeping her alive is his responsibility. Together they fight against the enemies to save the kingdom from falling apart.
Lynn Davis was a likable person. She's very kind, generous, brave, and like most sci-fi female characters, a little bit stubborn. Lord Kyle was just good. So does the captain of the ship and any other protagonists inside the book. Sometimes it's just hard to connect with a story told from the 3rd person point of view that jumps around between a few characters. It was something new to me, actually, the world building and the plot and almost every single thing. Those new things, in fact, are the main reasons why I enjoy the book. And if there's one thing you should know about the ending, is that there's a cliffhanger I'd really love to know more about. It left me questioning what will happen next, would there be any character development, things as such.
The writings and the dialogue were just as good, only not my favourite. Some minor details like the typos and grammatical errors did bother me. It's just, a little bit distracting but overall, Destiny's Flower entertained me well. It's about making differences without differentiating people, it also teaches us about the importance of being ourselves in this ever changing world. I'd recommend this to everyone who enjoy sci-fi with very little romance and a touch of fantasy. Or maybe anyone who interested in aliens :-).
There were many great things about this book, but also some things I wished to see more of. But, I'll start with the good stuff first.
I loved the world that was created with this story. It had talking animals, and interesting customs. This book showed the importance of staying true to yourself and not letting yourself forget who you are and where you came from. The idea that this book was based on is really interesting. It's a competition of 10 girls, who are competing for the title of Queen of Saldiora.
I also really liked the characters that were created by this story. Kyle von Talion was very likable always protecting Lynn as his duty. He may, or may not be the love interest, but I'm not too sure because this first book didn't really have much romance.
The main evil character/villain of the story, Brigieta, was great. It doesn't seem like she or her family will be able to redeem themselves in later books, but I do have the smallest sliver of hope that she'll come around.
On to a couple of things I didn't like about the book. In general, there wasn't a lot of character development. I don't really know what the characters look like physically. I also don't know much about the character's personality. I felt like the only character I could actually connect with was Lynn, while I didn't know much about the others. For example, when a character died during the book, I didn't feel many emotions because I didn't know the character's background or personality. Although, even though I could connect with Lynn, I sometimes wondered why she did what she did. Like, Lynn started crying at one point, and I didn't understand why she was crying. Also, the book had a few grammar and spelling errors, but that didn't distract much from the book, making it still have and easy flow when reading.
I'm really excited to read the next book when it comes out. I need some answers! There were so many things left unanswered, so many questions I have. In later books, I'd really like to see more character development, along with development of Saldiora and what it looks like. With the character development in the next book, I hope to see more of the romance aspect of the storing come into play. The story ended on a small cliff hanger, making a lot of room for incoming plot twists and turns in the next book. I also feel like there may be a love triangle coming on...considering what was said in the last chapter.
Overall, Destiny's Flower was a light, easy read and I enjoyed many parts of it. Although, I did wish to see more development with characters and the world, but hopefully that will happen later in the series!
So I love Linda's writing. The way this book was written made me enjoy the book more than I thought I would have.
You see Dr. Lynn is teaching her college class where no one is paying attention. Who would want to listen on a hot day, let alone even want to go to class. With close to an hour left in the lecture, some men interrupt. One man is called Lord Kyle and tells Lynn that she must come with them. With not much of a choice they take her with them. She wakes to this room confused and with a headache. She is more upset about her locket no longer around her neck. Eventually a doctor comes in and clears to leave the room. That's when Kyle enters and gives her some answers, before taking her to her room. At this point Lynn has learned that 1. they need her help. 2. she is not completely a prisoner. 3. she is on a ship that is quite high tech. Lynn wakes up, finding she had this horrible dream. Although is it really a dream? Is she really being injected with something? Well after what Lynn overhears she doesn't waste much time. She jumps into the vents hoping to escape. So some time passes and Lynn's escape, didn't go so well. She jumped down the vent and landed on the captain. Yep, not the best thing, but hey it's better than the vents. So what happens next? Well she tries to get out, but can't. Lynn finds out she is on a different ship than she thought. Plus Lynn is about to train for a competition. What kind? Well you will have to find out. Plus they don't say very much detail at first. Almost like they are hiding something very important. Now as you get into the book some more, you find yourself in a new place. A new group, and a new mission. Juntu's want to take over. To do that requires a lot of work and planning, and someone to do the actual work. One family is chosen, but the eldest daughter had died, so the next shall have to take over. At first it doesn't seem like the girl likes the idea, but at some points she finds reason to enjoy what is happening. One thing they really want to do it kill Lynn. Apparently she is strong and a threat. Sadly Lynn at this point still hasn't the slightest idea as to why she is REALLY there. Bits and pieces that they give her just aren't enough. So as the book goes on, the story gets really intense that you don't stop until its all over. I would have to say that I am looking forward to another book being done, so I cant know more.
Imagine the high-fantasy and romance of both Throne Of Glass and The Selection mixed together in a science fiction world with a few dystopian qualities. The result is Destiny's Flower
In compliance with FTC guidelines, I disclose that I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
This pleasantly surprised me. Based on the description of the book and the classification of it, I was expecting a sex-filled romance book with sci-fi elements. I was so wrong, in a good way.
The book does imply a romance, key word being "imply". There are some cutsy scenes, but not even a kiss happens. The (possible) love interests get to know each other, form a friendship and start trusting one another, which was so heart warming.
Like every book, I did have some problems with it, like the fact that it was sometimes keep up with the information and take it all in. And I also wish we could learn a bit more about the characters, because all of them are very interesting.
Although I'm sure a romance will occur, this first book really focused on the setting. Something that sometimes annoys me in some alien books, it's the fact that we don't get to know much about the alien's planet, customs and traditions. It was a very well crative and unique planet, with its own history and culture.
It also deals, not only with romance and sci-fi, but with social culture problems. How diversity of both factors affects society and the people who live in it, which added a great charecteristic to the novel. It has family drama, court drama and action kick-ass scenes, that all contributed to the awesomeness of this book.
Another thing that was very nice in the book, was the fact that even though the main characters are adults, you never feel bothered by their age. I've always felt weird reading a book with a middle aged woman's point of view because I could never really relate to the character. The main character as strong, intelligent, kind and, my favorite of all, sassy and very funny.
My favorite thing about this book it was how the plot went on, the characters were fantastic and te world intriguing and creative. All in all, this ovel was amazing and I can't wait for the next book in the series. There's a lot of possibilities with the series and I will definetly keep up with the series to see how it ends!
For last, thank you Dr. Linda Harley for sending this amazing book my way, I'm very grateful!!
When I was contacted by the author and asked to review this book I was extremely excited. There aren't too many books out there that combine science fiction with clean romance. I am also glad that this book didn't disappoint. It was enjoyable and fast paced. The characters were interesting and had a lot of depth and the story was definitely interesting.
I am a fan of novels that take place in space and have people from Earth taken to other planets. For a part of this book the story takes place on a space ship that is heading to a distant planet where a competition will take place to find a bride for the prince of the planet. I loved how the author combined futuristic elements with that of things that can be seen today (like a monarchy).
I loved the characters. Lynn was interesting and head-strong and she did what she thought was right even though it clashed with the customs on this new planet she was living on. Kyle was completely swoon worthy. He was kind and strong. Intelligent and caring. He was all around the perfect guy and I'm kind of hoping that if Lynn doesn't win the competition, that her and Kyle become a couple. We also see a lot of Lynn's "slaves", though this is what they technically are, she treats them as friends. They all have different personalities and really stand apart from one another.
I did have a few issues with this book, however. It took a while to get used to some of the items and words being used dealing with the other planet. Once I began to understand however it got easier. My other big issue was the grammatical errors and typo's. They weren't anything that made it impossible to understand the story by minor things such as using the word "suite" where the word should have been "suit".
All in all, I definitely plan on reading the next book when it is released. It was action packed and had some good edge of the seat moments that had me turning the pages desperate to find out what would happen next. I recommend this if you're a fan of sci-fi space travel stories.
This copy was received from the author for review purposes and did not effect my opinions in any way. The opinions expressed in this review were mine alone.
This book starts with the proverbial alien abduction – no, not by little green men, but rather some perfectly normal people. Doctor Lynn Davis is taken on a lengthy, rather perilous space journey which reminded me a bit of something from Star Wars. Although she is put to work as a deck hand as punishment after her attempt to escape and is then subjected to some strenuous training, Lynn finds herself becoming fond of the crew and especially so of Lord Kyle von Talion. The question is, who exactly is the captain and why is she kept away from him? When they reach the planet of saldiora, she is dumped into a whole new world of intrigue, strange creatures, slavery and antagonistic females.
Destiny's Flower is a comfortably paced read with lots of action and never a dull moment. The author uses situations in the story to explain the world of Saldiora and some of the rather unusual beings on it. Being a horse lover, I particularly enjoyed the talking horses. They can plan, aid their riders, have the status of nobility and have servants that work for them – how cool is that?!
The main character, Lynn, is a feisty woman who simply won't stand for the silly and often cruel rules laid down by the tribunal. Stuff the rules, this heroine goes ahead and does exactly as she pleases. When she is reprimanded or punished, she simply persists with her personal rebellion. Whether she ends up becoming the queen or not, she is determined to bring change to the planet and stop slavery. The other characters are unique, well defined and likable. The thoroughly nasty Juntu family and their followers are mean, relentlessly use blackmail and will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. And who exactly are Gabilla and Pablo?
I highly recommend Destiny's Flower to readers of all ages. Let's hope that we'll soon see a sequel to this enthralling five-star read. (Ellen Fritz)
Alright, Sci-Fi and Fantasy lovers out there have I got a treat for you. Destiny's Flower is like the love child of Star Trek and Game of Thrones. Sounds like an odd mix, right? Well, it works and I couldn't seem to put it down! (Definitely a family starver. You know, one of those books that you can't seem to get away from, even to make dinner! Thank goodness my husband indulges my book obsession ;)
What starts off as a normal day for Lynn Davis quickly turns into an episode from the Twilight Zone. She's lecturing her class when two men (who she assumes are government types) bust in and start questioning her identity. Before she knows it she finds herself on a spaceship, training for a competition that hasn't even been explained to her. Talk about a crazy week!
Soon she finds herself on the planet of Saldiora. (This is where we go from Star Trek to medieval times with a technologically advanced twist.) Lynn learns to train in sword combat, horse riding, and aristocracy traditions all so she win the competition (along with it the hand of the Prince) she has unknowingly been prophesied to win.
Sound like a wild ride? Well, I haven't even mentioned that there's a radical faction of Saldorians (The Jutus) that will stop at nothing to ensure Lynn never becomes queen!
The romance is light in this installment of the Saldiora series, but there is tons of action, adventure, and character development. For unforgettable characters and a wild ride be sure to check out Destiny's Flower. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
It is not often you find a book that mixes science fiction with fantasy and a little romance. This one does so successfully and offers a female hero. I find it refreshing when the women in the story do not fall into stereotypical types of damsel in distress, evil witch or princess. The women in this story are confident, daring and a variety of other things. The men are also not your typical stereotypes of hero, warrior or nasty villain.
As for the plot, I found it intriguing. I was enticed immediately by the kidnapping of professor of Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Lynn Davis and her whisking away to a spaceship. Her reaction to being kidnapped, her interaction with the captors and her ultimate journey on not just the ship but the planet Saldiora were all captivating. Her participation in the beauty gala, wherein ten wannabe queens are trained to be worthy of being the prince’s wife, was fascinating. There are humorous cultural blunders, action packed sword fights, thrilling murder plots and touching character interactions.
A definite read for anyone who likes their sci-fi/fantasy with a little romance on the side. This book offers a glimpse of what it means for a character to stay true to themselves no matter what they are confronted with. Dr. Lynn Davis gives a perfect example of just that. Stay tuned to the excitement as this is only Saldiora Book 1.
This book by Linda Harley was an interesting mix of Science Fiction and Fantasy. It is the first in the Saldiora series. It has an amazingly strong female heroine. A fabulous story and an exciting mix of ancient sword style fighting and modern technology.
It has some very intense moral values of being true to who you are as Lynn is kidnapped and taken to an entirely new world where she just really doesn't fit in. Lynn winds up in Saldiora which is a very strange world where modern technology is available yet they still have slavery, where strictly black and white, and still fight with swords.
Yes this is a strange world indeed, one in which animals TALK! So what a mix we have in this book. I for one can't wait to read the next book in this series.
All in all, I give this book 4 stars. It had a few slow points for me so I couldn't give it the full 5 stars, but I definitely recommend this book and will assuredly be picking up the next book in the series. I am looking forward to reading more about Kyle and Lynn and the adventures with the enemies of Saldiora.
Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Destiny's Flower reached my hands through a giveaway on Goodreads , so I thank the author for the opportunity .
The story focuses on Lynn Davis and her adventures in a world that is entirely unknown. A world that at the beginning is also a bit strange to us. But as time passes we start to realize their characteristics and functioning.
The main characters are appealing and it's impossible not to root for them in their adventures. However, in what concerns the main villain of the story , I was a little disappointed . I like villains with a back story, with actions justified by their past story, ulterior motives or personality. However, I know that this is the first book so it may not have all been revealed yet.
The writing is very easy to read, which gives the book a fast pace that drives the reading, making us want to know more about what will happen next and constantly turning the page to find out more.
Finally, I must say that Linda Harley made me curious to visit Saldiora again in the future.
Until the middle of the book, it was a three stars (only two at some points). But on its way to the end, I felt more and more piqued. And I really look forward for the next book. Thus the fourth star.
The story is quite a fine one. I like it that aliens here are just like us. I mean, why should alien be green or have large heads? I also appreciate the thought of 'universal translator', implying that all those person in the book might be speaking to each other in 100 languages altogether, but they can communicate. Unfortunately, the culture of those alien doesn't seem to vary from one another at all, although they were inhabiting several planets and not one. It was too 19th century Caucasian actually.
But the flaw for me is, that while often implied as an academician, Lind didn't act like one, or at least not a good one. Except her tendency to find something to read, she acted more like a student than a professor she was supposed to be.
But then the book was enjoyable. And I hope the sequel will be even better.
Destiny's Flower is an alien-abduction science fiction fantasy. A biomedical engineering professor is taken to an alien planet to save it, while falling in love with one of its inhabitants, her handsome royal kidnapper.
The author, Linda Harley, has a doctorate in applied physiology and moved to the United States about twenty years ago. It was obvious that her scientific knowledge and cultural experience was evident in her storyline. However, her storytelling abilities could be better.
The main character wasn’t believable, as she was too trusting as a kidnapped victim. And, she had to save a kingdom through a beauty contest that required her to learn sword-fighting and ride a horse that can talk. And the other characters lacked in-depth descriptions. When one of them died, nothing happened.
Destiny's Flower was an enjoyable read about a fantastical adventure on an interesting planet.
Lynn is kidnapped and held and she thinks she is in danger so plots an escape. There is another planet and group of people that want to destroy destiny the ship Lynn is on and also want rid of her. Brigieta is not a nice person and wants to get rid of Lynn even though she does not know her she must think she is a threat.I like Lynn but not brigieta she is going to turnout not a nice character.Lynn is finding put about the 10 beauty's and his not happy at what they are given as gifts things are so different on this world something she has to get used too. Brigieta has started how she means to go on dealing with Lynn who has no idea why she is being mean to her. Loving Lynn she is really becoming forthright and bold not scared to speak her mind and does it so well . Brigieta hires people to get rid of Lynn and Lynn finds something out about the beauties rules.Thourghly enjoyed this book looking forward to sequel in what happens to Lynn and Kyle and her friends.
I received an excellent, wonderfully written science fiction novel full of mystery, fantasy and romance, Destiny's Flower by Linda Harley free from Goodreads. While Dr. Lynn Davis is giving a lecture to her graduate students, she is interrupted by military type men who need to speak with her. She dismisses her class and ends up being kidnapped by Lord Kyle von Talion and taken to another planet, Saldiora. She finds herself one of the ten in a Beauty Gala Competition. She learns to fight with a sword, adapt to a different culture, and royal court politics. Since Lynn may be the lost royal heir, the Juntu's want her dead. Read the fabulous, highly recommended, romantic, fantasy, Destiny's Flower by Linda Harley.
