Rachel White was born and raised in L.A., California, but moved north for college. An avid reader for as long as she can remember, she started writing in high school and hasn’t stopped since. Though her favorite genre is probably fantasy, she’ll devour a good book no matter what shelf it belongs to, and she takes an equally experimental approach to her own writing, hopping between ideas, genres, and stories as it suits her.

Along with writing, Rachel has been drawing since she was a little girl and also loves to bake, particularly bread; don't ask her about her sourdough starter unless you really want to know. Writing, however, remains her first and strongest passion.

After eight years together and adopted a kid with Nick, Justin felt trapped. So he broke it off and left Nick and their kid. Feeling free, he started hooking up with whomever he wanted, only to realize he still wanted Nick after all. He thwarted other guy's effort to get close to Nick. Which of course, pissed off Nick. Does Justin still have a chance?

A copy was provided by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I went into this not knowing it was actually a short novella but it was exactly what I need after all the long reads I've had lately.

The story revolves around jaded exes, Nick and Justin, who've been separated for three months now and are trying to deal with ending a 9 year relationship so abruptly. To add to that we have Washington, their foster kid who is unwillingly hurt by his adoptive parents shaky relationship.

At first I thought this was gonna be a little over the top but the story was pretty mellow and cute. I do wish we had gotten to see more of their relationship before the actual breakup so I could have sympathized with the characters a bit more. Maybe I would have hated Justin a little less because, let's be honest, he's a bit of a douche. But since I barely got to see how he was with Nick before, I have little to base myself on.

Another reason why I docked another star is because there was the use of "crazy" and "insane" as adjectives which is just a no for me.

Overall, it was a cute quick read. Maybe not the most memorable but it was fun.

Not the first of it's kind that I have read in m/m fiction. So far I've read about two stories (which I can't remember the titles for) which has a similar story line to this. Long-term partners having a big event occur in their life, one has cold feet and decides they need a break from the other and when he finds that he's made a mistake he crawls back to the partner he's left.

For some reason stories like this leave me really aggravated. The thought that Nick would just accept everything Justin did without making him work for it just fueled my fire. Justin was a freaking jerk in my eyes and I didn't think he deserved a second chance.

Ugh. Beware of this one; it will toy with your emotions in the worst way.

The story is about Justin and Nick, who have suffered a recent “break” in their relationship. Or, rather, as Nick would put it –
“Justin had dumped him – asked for a break, to be exact, but everybody in the world knew what that meant – in late September, which meant that it had been three months since. It was long past time for Nick to be over this sh*t, but nine years was hard to get over.”

Because they have a foster kid together, that they'd been planning to adopt, there is the constant, emotional, inevitability of having to see each other for kid-related activities and visits, school events and PTA meetings. I love that this aspect was added, because there is a lot of emotional stress caused with the addition of a foster kid into a family, as it is, but when there's a break up after that, the kid – in this case a 14 year old, Washington – is going to be affected. The fact that both these issues were raised in perfectly balanced detail – the fact that Nick couldn't escape seeing Justin and that Washington was hurt and felt responsible over the break – was a brilliant piece of plotting for such a short book.

For me, the genius was in the emotional connection we, the readers, were able to make with the characters. Even someone like Washington who didn't get his own POV was crystal clear to me, thanks to Nick's observations. I loved that they were all equally explored, all equally affected by the break and all as invested in the resolution of the break as each other. It was really beautiful to see that Nick wanted to put Washington first, constantly defending Justin and bolstering the fact that he still missed and loved Washington, despite his pain.

Overall, a beautiful story about a couple finding out who they are through a 'break' in their relationship. Thanks to one party, the constant exposure to each other and the help of some clued in friends and Washington, Nick and Justin were able to figure out whether they had strong or weak foundations.

“This was a f*cking intervention, and now Justin was supposed to pour his heart and soul out to everybody and they'd all awww and give him hugs and cry healing tears together at the knowledge that the love of Justin's life had refused to take him back.”

This one was all right. Justin was kind of a jerk, and honestly I hope that the the two MCs get some relationship counseling or something, because otherwise I'm not convinced that their relationship will actually survive. Despite that (and a couple other caveats) I thought the last scene was sweet. My favorite was the kid, though, because he was cute.

Would have been nicer as a longer story as we only got to know Nick as a spurned lover. It was easy to really dislike the ex and them getting back together wasn't really something I was rooting for. It would have been better to see them as a couple so we could grow to love them and actually want them to be reunited.
