About the author

Eugene Tarle (Russian: Евгений Тарле) was a Soviet historian and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is known for his books about Napoleon's invasion of Russia and on the Crimean War, and many other works. Yevgeny Tarle was one of the founders of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Russia's diplomatic university.

შარლ მორის დე ტალეირან-პერიგორი ჟოზეფ ფუშესთან ერთად რევოლუციურ საფრანგეთში ღალატის სიმბოლოდ იქცა. საბჭოთა ცენზურის პირობებში გამოცემული ბიოგრაფია ბოლომდე სანდო ვერ იქნება, თუმცა აქაც ძალიან კარგად ჩანს მისი როლი ისტორიის იმ ჩარხს ტრიალში, რომელმაც დაამხო ბურბონთა ხელისუფლება, კონვენტი, დირექტორია, იმპერია, რესტავრაციის შემდგომი სამეფო, ისევ იმპერია... მაგრამ ვერც ტალეირანის უდიდეს დიპლოატიურ ნიჭს გავექცევით (რაც, რა თქმა უნდა, ვერ ფარავს კორუფციას, ღალატს, საკუთარი კეთილდღეობისთვის უშეღავათო ბრძოლას). სხვაგვარად იმ დროში საკმაოდ მხცოვანი ვერ დაასრულებდა სისოცხლეს საწოლში და არა გილიოტინაზე.

Only about Talleyrand could a book be apparent criticism and defamation, but in reality his apology (whatever, intentional or involuntary).
Book is wrapped in Soviet-style bla-bla-bla (read: standard language for any political text to appease Soviet censorship) about bourgeoisie and capitalism. You have to have this in mind while reading the book.
Apart from this, book is filled with lots of historic events with context and analysis.
Besides Talleyrand, tells a lot about Napoleon and Metternich.
Gives a picture about how was politics made in Europe at the end of 18th and during first third of 19th century.

This book gave me a close look on how politics is made (at least at that period). The Taleiran and Napoleon personalities is deeply researched by author and it have nitty-gritty details about their lifes which makes reading interesting
