Something Witchy

My name is Ember Blaylock. Welcome to the World of Weird—better known as my life.

It wasn’t always like this. I was once a normal high school senior, just filling out college apps and trying to stay sane long enough to get out of Moonlight, Missouri. Preferably before I ended up in a straight-jacket out of sheer boredom.

At first, my only problems were my increasingly unwanted ability to see the dead and my desperation to remove the stalker known as my ex-boyfriend from my life. Somewhere along the line I must have pissed off the Bad Karma Fairy. Maybe I stepped on the wrong toadstool or peed in Loki’s personal swimming pool—I really don’t know. All I do know is I’m about to have the worst week of my life. Maybe the worst week of any teenager’s life. Ever.

All because of a dead guy.

From the second pale, too-hot-to-be-real Nathan Ashley stepped out of the wreckage of his mangled sports car, my life spiraled into complete and utter chaos. One minute, I'm quasi-normal, the next I’m being kidnapped by a vampire, I’m having weird, creepy powers sprout up out of nowhere, and I’m running from a demon who wants to get more familiar with my anatomy…or kill me. Again. Yeah, did I mention he's done it before?

Anybody know if those straight-jackets come in pink?

Place of Birth: Houston, MS, in 1976
Hair: Brown (unless I’m having a ‘Blonde Moment’)
Eyes: Green
Height: Short (and that’s all you get to know)
Weight: Fluffy (cough)

About Me:

I’m a prolific Paranormal Romance author who started writing for my daughter in 2008 when she ran out of vampire series to read. I'd never written a book before that, but by the time I finished that book for her I had the fever. I've been doing what the nagging voices in my head tell me to do ever since. I work full time, run a family, and still manage to put out two novels a year. To hear my husband tell it, I type in my sleep!

Likes:

Books. I've read everything I could lay my hands on since I was six.
The color orange--seriously, I love it.
Pajamas--I always said my dream job is one where I could to go to work without getting dressed :)
Music--all music (except bluegrass which gets on my last nerve). I'll listen to everything from country to rap to alternative to classical to heavy metal to the blues. My writing playlist is so mixed up it's crazy! I just love music. Acoustic guitar is my favoritest (no, I don’t care that's not really a word) favorite, though.
Scary Movies--not the blood and guts variety, but the truly creepy ones that have you looking under the bed before you get in--even when you're thirty.
Caffeine!! Favored fixes: Coffee, Caramel Iced coffee, Diet Coke

Dislikes:

People who talk on their phones while driving and in checkout lines.
Reality television. (Gags)
People with small minds and big mouths. (For some reason, they tend to come together).
Laziness--my biggest pet peeve EVER.

People Who Make Me Tick:

My amazing husband, Ronnie, whom I couldn't function without and who willingly shares me with the 500 people screaming in my head at all hours of the day and night. He also doesn't seem to mind that I can't cook to save my own life. That helps. :D
My even more amazing kids, Trey, Ben, Sierra and Taylor who keep me young, make me laugh, make me cry, and drive me absolutely crazy. I love you guys!
My sister, Audrey, who loves me enough to hide my laptop from me when I visit.
My ‘twinkie’ and the other half of my twisted mind, Terrica, who always comes through in a pinch when I'm running on empty--and who has read every incarnation of Something Witchy since the very first draft.
And my friend, mentor, and editor, Sara, who helped me turn a great book into an incredible adventure. My hero! :)

What I'm ‘Famous’ For:

Like Ember, I'll take on a challenge just to prove I can do it. I've been that way my whole life.
I'm an amazing friend--I'm everybody's Kim, from Something Witchy. If you need me, I'm there. If you cry, I cry. If you laugh, I laugh. If you kill someone, I help hide the body. (Due to concerned comments made on this particular point, a bit of explanation is appropriate here. In no way is the author condoning the wrongful death of those who deserve it, nor has she ever hidden a body. Come ON people, just a figure of speech!)
Being queen of the "Blonde Moment"--despite the fact I’m not blonde (really!!) and the fact that I have a really high IQ (which personally I don't think is any indication of intelligence, to be honest), I can do some of the dumbest things. My husband's favorite story to torment me with is the time I decided to paint the bedroom and didn't look at the paint can first. I kept painting and painting and the damn wall wasn't changing colors. Because it wasn't paint. It was latex. We were peeling that crap off the wall in strips for months.
Being able to listen without judging. I've never met a teenager that didn't feel they could tell me anything.
My wicked sense of humor--and my unnatural mastery of being blatantly sarcastic without being mean. I've been married to the master of being a smartass for the last eleven ye

I'm a bit confused with myself and what to write about this book. It felt like it took forever to reach the end but at no point did I want to skip, so I'm not sure why exactly it dragged or felt like it was 600 pages long.

This is one of those books were not a lot actually happens; I don't even know what to say about it. Yes there was a baddie and secrets, but it was all revealed in a mellow sort of way and I think that's why I'm a bit bewildered (that or I'm slightly high from all the furniture wax fumes I've inhaled today).

Even though this was slow, I did really enjoy it. Ember was a great character, full of spunk. Nathan was frustrating then loveable. I'm hoping Ember will develop her magic more in the next book and there'll be more action (my fingers are crossed the Mother suffers a slow and painful death)

As a side note - at times it felt like it could have been quite sexy but the author wasn't sure if it was appropriate to take it there. Let me just say I'm all for them getting down and dirty, I was up for it 250 pages ago.

First off, I wanted to like this book. I found the plot interesting and up until chapter 4, I could handle almost anything. I loved the idea of a witch as a main character and I am a fan of the first person perspective. Any YA paranormal romance is fine with me, as long as it doesn't get too explicit.

So, let's take a look at the negative aspects, section by section.
1. The relationships. Whether it be Ember+Nate or Ember+Kim+Blake+Jack or Ember+Tyler-Nate, whatever it is, I have a few problems with each.
Ember and Nate: This couple was explosive, and in the bad way. They started off fine and tolerable and then after he kidnaps her, crap hits the fan in many ways. Ember has what I like to call "Bella Swan Syndrome", although I'd take Ember over Bella any day. However, Ember is kidnapped and she forms this relationship with a physically abusive, mentally damaging, and emotionally scarring vampire who threatens her life, freedom, independence, and well-being on several occasions. He never explains anything to her, never gives her solid answers (always, always evasive), and somehow manages to ooze charm like its cheap. This on again, off again thing they have going on was not believable. It was immature. At one point, specifically near the end, I wanted to scream at both of them for being stupid. Anyway, I felt that barely anything was ever resolved between those two. It left me feeling empty and confused.
With Ember+Kim+Blake+Jack, I did not understand how they didn't see the changes in their friend-since-third-grade. He kinda changed into a creepy stalker (not unlike Nate, mind you) and no one wants to mention this bit to a counselor or something? He's a freakazoid all of a sudden and in order for Ember to make her great escape from school, they stage Jack with a lie and call the cops on him. Some friends...
And Tyler. What is he? This is never explained and I'm confused. I would have appreciated more hints, I think, to at least make my own judgement call. So if anyone finds out, let me know please?

2. The seeing dead people/ghosts At first, I thought this was a nice touch. It seemed like a cool ability for Ember to have, added to her character, even. But it was mentioned, what? four times? And used effectively only three times. The first was when she was initially being kidnapped by Nate. Ghost voices woke her up, talking about how ticked she would be when she found out she wasn't at her house anymore. Then, POOF! No more mention of ghosts until the end of the book when one warns her of danger and the last mention is at the end. Sort of like a life-saving device, if you ask me. Something to add when its convenient and not really all that important anyway. It had SO much potential to be really awesome, but it just kind of flopped, in the end.

3.Ember. As a character, she did not appeal to me. As a narrator, she was barley tolerable. As a friend, she was odd. And as a heroine, she fell flat. Her temper and attitude appealed to me at first. She was edgy and interesting, but then she boarded the emotional roller coaster. I swear, one minute she was cursing everyone who stepped in her path and the next she was bawling like a baby. Her reactions were not believable, especially in relation to Nate. During the time in which she was trying to distance herself, their dialogue went like so:
Ember: "I hate you. Leave me alone. I don't ever want to see you again! Go find your stupid soul mate!"
Nate: "But, you want me. I can tell. ...So I'll just leave then. Like, for real. I'm leavin' babe."
Ember: Silent NOOOOO! "Fine. Go." pause. ButIloveyoupleasecomebacktomeeeee!
Nate: Instigates physical contact, after obviously NOT leaving. "You want me. I want you. Let's love each other. But I can't tell you anything because I'm being cryptic. DUN DUN DUN!"
Ember: Melts into puddle. Figures out she's not being firm for the seven thousandth time. "Ugh. You are dumb. But I love you. And now I hate you 'cause I remembered you are a jerk."
Nate: "Oh. Well." pause "But you're my baby" And almost literally, in age anyway. Four centuries next to an 18 year old. That's not creepy at all. "It's ok Ember. Just run away with me. I LOVE you so much it hurts! You can see it in my eyessss!"
And you get the gist. It was infuriating when those two where stuck together at Shea's (which is a cool name, btw).

Anyway, I think that's the main points I had struggles with. The beginning (Chapters 1-4) was great but the rest was difficult to follow and tolerate. I will NOT be reading the second. Best of luck to you, future reader, but I'd avoid this if you aren't a fan of Twilight.

I don't normally read YA books, but AJ Myers blew me away with this one. I ADORED the humor, the voice, and the characters in this book. Ember Blaylock is a spunky heroine whose antics made me laugh out loud more than once. There were tender moments that took my breath away, tense moments that had me clinging to my seat, and embarrassing moments that made me cringe with her. All in all, I loved the book. I totally recommend!

Watch this author, folks. Considering Something Witchy is her first published book, AJ Myers is going to be a blockbuster. She's that good.

I had the advantage of seeing this one both before and after the editing process. I am over halfway through the new book and it has blown me away. AJ spins a yarn in this book that is just too good not to read it, but I will warn you that you probably shouldn't start this one on a work night, as you will probably be up until you leave for work the next day. It really grabs you by the tookus and holds on tight as she wrenches your heart this way and that, and sends you on a roller coaster ride with Ember Blaylock on her Witchy ride into the paranormal world of Moonlight Missouri.

Ember Blaylock was a well a not so regular 18 yr old High Schooler, she can see and talk to ghost, and she knows things about people. With a Mother and Father who are not really parents she has raised herself and become very self reliant. She has no one to talk to about any of this. Her best friend Kim and her boyfriend Blake are the hottest couple around they have been friends since grade school. Her boyfriend who is not really her boyfriend has now resorted to stalking her. Whenever he gets to close she starts coughing up soot and wood pieces.

What is a girl to do, how about a 3 car accident and the Hottest Man Alive walks right out of one of the cars. Oh and he is Dead. Nathan Ashley proceeds to kidnap Ember and let the fun begin!

Ember finds out he is a Vampire and she is a Blood Witch oh and wannabe boyfriend is a Demon who wants to.... well that is in the book!!

The cast of this book is very well rounded, Good Guys ,Bad Guys.
What is Ember to do? Catch her self on fire , self heal oh that part had me laughing so hard!!!
Read the Most Awesome New Book to find out!!! (It's not what you expect!!!) It is sooo much more!!!!!

I absolutely love Something Witchy. The plot was well thought out and written. This is not your average witch book where you have clear cut of who is good & evil though you will think that until the twist. I really liked a lot of things about this book. The characters for one I really got a kick out of their back and forth banter with one another. Ember’s situation also brings a lot of emotion into the book. To be born with parents who don’t really care is hard, she’s had to raise herself and in turn has built walls so high and thick around her heart no one could get to her. That is until she meets Nathan who saves her from her stalker ex-boyfriend.

At first Ember thinks he is a ghost, she’s always been able to see them but just wait till she finds out what he really is. It almost knocks her off her chair. For poor Ember this is just the start of her bad day.. Wait you might want to make that a really bad week..
All and all it was a wonderful read that will leave you wanting the next book really bad! This is defiantly a book I’d re-read and one I would recommend to people.

Something Witchy

Ember is a every day young adult. 18 years old and a senor in high school and her whole life ahead of herself. She has always had a difficult home life. Her parents, were self absorbed in there books, to the point of ignoring Ember. She has always suspected they truly didn't care if she was around or not. Leaving late to school was not helping, the ticket from the cop who hated her was making things very difficult and finally forgetting her homework sealed the deal, she was having a really bad day. So when Jake approached her, she knew it was just the icing on the cake. Jake, a boy she had gone out with twice, made her sick. Not just I don't like you sick, but physically made her sick. So she knew to stay away from him. Jake wanted to date her, Ember wanted nothing to do with him and he didn't take no for an answer. So when her and her best friends decide to fool him and get Ember away, she thought it was a great idea. Having a bad day is just an understatement. Ember, trying to get away from her personal stalker, not only does not get away but then is involved in a crash. Jake's car, Embers and a mystery man. She finds out his name is Nathan, and although he should be mangled and on his death bed, he walks away for the accident. Ember is extremely attracted to Nathan, but when he kidnaps her, her feelings are a little conflicted. Nathan has his own agenda, and will do anything to get what he wants. Ember being a teenager, stubborn and didn't like being kidnapped, is going to make Nathan's job very hard. Will ember find out Nathan's true motives and why won't Jake, just take a hint, no means no!! Ember is thrown into a world of demons, witches and vampires. She has to find her place in the world and also fight for her life!

Something Witch is a fast passed ride, that will keep you going to the end. The characters are interesting and fun. Ember is the typical teen, who wants her independence but also love. As most teens, lower self esteem and can't figure out that she is beautiful. She is thrown into a world full of beings and things the she had never known or dreamed existed. AJ Myers pulls the reader along as well and what a fun ride it is. Great book for anyone, especially the YA!! Can't wait for book 2!

Wow Something Witchy has climbed the charts to my favorite books. No words can describe how perfect this book was. Believe me this has nothing to do with A.J. Myers being my adopted author. This book was perfect from cover to end. There was absolutely nothing in it I didn't like. It was easy to read, easy to fall in love with the story and the characters. The details and descriptions of what was going on in the story made me imagine it all like as if I was right there watching it happen in front of me. With that said A.J. Myers took a vampire story to a whole new level of extraordinary, nothing like I've read about vampires before with a new spice to it. AJ's got a new fan dying to read more and more of this series and more of her work to come.

After a conversation with her parents which did not go so well, getting a speeding ticket and getting Saturday school detention Ember Blaylock was really not in the mood to have to deal with Jack the stalker. Jack has been Embers friend since third grade. After going on two dates all of a sudden Jack thinks he owns her but she wants nothing to do with Jack. Just when she thought her day of hell was over Jack was ready to follow her car after school. With help from Kim and Blake she leaves unseen by jack but as soon as she thinks they got away from him. Ember sees jack's car behind the sports car that is behind. Not paying much attention to the road more distracted with trying to get away from her stalker Ember crashes into the sports car that had gotten right in front of her and had stopped in the middle of the road. It all happens so fast....... From that day on Ember's whole life changes. As if seeing ghosts wasn't enough she will discover a whole new world where witches, vampires, ghosts and demons are very very real.

The drama between Nathan and Ember, the romance between the two, their adventure, the kick ass action, those moments of horror and all the twists made a really amazing story that I am certain will engross everyone into the story completely making the person forget about everything else while reading this book. Do I recommend it? Hell yes, you won't be disappointed.

An amazing read!

Ember is a young woman who is having the worst day ever!

But that is all changed when she is kidnapped by a sexy vampire who makes her feel things she has never felt before. On the run from a creepy ex-boyfriend who happens to be a demon now, she has to figure out things for herself before losing herself to destiny.

There was a few laugh out loud parts, also a few parts where I wanted to slap Emberbecause she was soooo freaking annoying.

But I loved Nate and his mood-swings just because he was just so sexy!

I wish there was more of a back story with the characters, perhaps in the next book they will talk about Nate's life and stuff... (I don't want to give anything away hense the vagueness)... but I am definately looking forward to the next book or whatever AJ Myers will write.

This was a great, fast read. I love the character of Nathan - he is wonderful. Ember was just a little too clueless all the time. She frustrated me to no end when she refused to figure things out, but she frustrated pretty much everyone with her cluelessness. I am excited to read more books in this series. I am interested to see what the deal with Tyler is. I was afraid of a love triangle sub plot, but Ember seems pretty much set with her soulmate. As for that. I am excited to hear about her past lives with Nathan. Has the demon who took over Jack killed her every time? It seems like he may have. It's weird to me that Nathan has allowed her to be killed every time, it doesn't seem like they lived out their full lives and she died of old age in any of them. I would also be interested in seeing this series handle her death and reincarnation first hand. But I know it's hard to kill off the main character and have her relearn Nathan. We watched it once, we don't need to see it again. Is this her first time as a witch? I like it, I am seriously invested in these characters.

This was a Kindle book so excuse the use of percentages.

The first 20% of this book was amazing. So much so that I told people, "I am reading a fabulous book!"

The next 70% was filled with nothing but. "I love you. Go away. I am addicted to you. You suck. I can't live without you. I hate you." with some random "I am not a witch" comments thrown in for variety.

The last 10% was disturbing. And this is a spoiler, so only read this section if you think this book is wretchedly bad and don't want to read the ending. A 412-year old man hooks up with a teenager and it's considered a soul mate match and true love? Um, no. It's cringe-worthy. It's like vampire pedophilia.

I didn't think I could read a vampire book I would consider equivalent to Twilight. I was wrong. Both are terrible. I regret the hours of my life I spent on this.

WOW! You know, I pick up a lot of books that are free for a limited time and most are really not that good. This book blew away most of the recent books I've read! I really devoured it quickly and had to force myself to stop reading long enough to go to sleep last night. I read a lot of paranormal romance books and this gave me almost everything I wanted (minus the all out smut). There's a healthy dose of paranormal, some very yummy guys, lots of good story, and no big cliffhanger that drives me crazy! I want to read the next book, but will probably wait it out a little bit to give some of the oodles of books I recently bought a try. I can't wait to get more of these awesome characters! If you are reading this, you should pick up this book now!

Every now and then a book comes along that's so refreshing, it makes me laugh out loud. This is one of those books.

A.J. Myers' writing style reminds me of the three little bears: not too hot, not too cold, just right. Her debut book is impressive; she has a strong grasp on so many writing issues that trip up new authors. Point of view, pacing, characterization, and tone were all spot on, and even the tiny technical errors that usually run rampant in literary debuts these days were few and far between.

And the story? Well, you'll just have to grab your own copy and read it. I enjoyed it immensely and can't wait until the next book in the series.

Meet Ember, a high school senior whose life changes within the blink of an eye. Not only is she stalked by her friend, who turns out to be a demon but meets a vampire, Nathan, who kidnaps her and who she falls in love with and finds out she and her grandmother are witches. She has to fight to get her life back by banishing the demon and allowing herself to be loved by Nathan.

It is a fabulous book. The writing is witty and full of humour. Ember's character is just amazing and you can't help but like her. I couldn't put this down once I started reading it. And thankfully, I finished the first book right on the day the second book "Something Wicked" came out.

Something Witchy is one of the greatest books I've read. I absolutely love the humor, the characters are awesome and the story is so well written. Ember has such a quick wit about her that you can't help but love her. I laughed so much while reading this book. And Nathan, WOW. This book will take you on a journey through a week from hell for Ember. I loved Something Witchy. I definitely recommend it. I can't wait to read the next book, Something Wicked.

It has a good story line, BUT I found myself trying to fast forward so the incessant whining and being a smart mouth and all the "snappy" comments of the main character would stop. I've read my fair share of books with an annoying heroine but this is probably the most I annoying thus far. :( I'm really sorry to say that because its a book I'd love to continue on, but couldn't with the sheer patience it took for me to finish it because of Em.

Absolutely WONDERFUL!!!!! The best YA paranormal that I have read in a while.
Ember is wonderful lead. She is snarky, sarcastic and not afraid to say what's on her mind.
Nathan is so swoon-worthy! SIGH..... Some of the scenes between the two of them are so very tender and endearing.

But I HAVE to know!!! What is up with Tyler????

My main problem with this book was that I didn't like the heroine. First she was not very bright (stupid). Second, she kept swinging back and forth so much in her opinions that I got really tired of her. So this one was a no go for me.

This book was a good easy book. I really liked the character, Ember. In some ways it seemed very cliche with the witch and the vampire falling in love. Therefore, it gets 4 stars from me.

I listened to this book with an Amazon Alexa voice and a kindle reader. It's convenient. I was crocheting, organizing and doing traction all while listening. Not all books on your kindle work. I think if there is not "Audible" of the book, your kindle or Alexa will read it.

Anyway... Ember gets "kidnapped" by someone bc her grandmother that she hasn't seen in a decade is trying to protect her. Then Ember discovers that she is a witch. And I'm not just talking about the grandma. Ember is a witch. Most of the story is about the cross country road trip.

It was a fun story. I know that many adults like to read YA. I do as well. But this particular book is probably for the younger set. It seemed well written. It was a little tough to tell with the jerkiness that is Alexa/Kindle reading. But I still might look into the next book.

I lost interest in this book after around Chapter 10, so for all I know this book may have been awesome and interesting after that. But somehow I feel my life and time is too precious to gamble it on the chance that the rest of this book is better than the crap I've been reading so far.

1st - the good points. The style of the author is not bad.
The humor is mostly forced & inappropriate for the situation (a la Divinicus Nex ) but okay.

Thats it.

Now to the bad.
Oh god - this has to be one of the most irritatingly mysterious plot with extremely irritating dialogues by the hero and heroine.
So Ember is a slightly neurotic kid raised by nutty parents and she has some freakish experiences. Of course she hides this from her BFF, cos thats what BFFs in YA stories do - hide, hide hide till it turns out there was no need to hide.
She has a stalker and while being stalked, she runs into another crazy stalker - who is the hot new vampire on the block.
And of course, he has to be the hottest thing on earth and the heroine cant just stop drooling.

All this is kinda bearable, cos wen u start reading a YA book with vampires and witches, you are signing up for the risk that things are going to be too gooey and mushy.

What irritated me about this stuff was the whole mystery stuff after Nathan - the vampire comes in. He climbs inside Ember's car, promising her with some explanation and we feel - here it comes, the whole story. But it doesn't.
Nate is one superbly irritating hero - all he does is, avoid explanations, act aggressive and macho, encroach on a high-school kid's personal space and try and kidnap her.
And then he has the supreme gall to ask - 'Why are you always so angry?'

WTF???
What else did the hero and the author expect?
How in the whole world is that a lover-like or tender question?
This continues all the way - no explanations, just blind requests of faith.
And then in one scene during the kidnapping-with-no-explanations-but-expectations-of-trust, he insults Ember's looks and says he is not interested in Ember cos Ember is not all vowed by his 'charming' personality. Again, WTF?
You creepy dude, you have been in her life all of 1 day. This is taking Insta-love and Insta-stalk to a whole new level!!!!

Then we have Ember.
Another really stupid heroine.
She climbs into a car with a guy she doesnt know, she takes him to her house even though she has no clue about his identity and she does everything she can to piss off a possibly lunatic homicidal kidnapper.
Smart? Nah, no way.

If the author expects that all this crappy unnecessary mystery and Nate'[s behavior is okay, just cos he and Ember were obviously doing the whole 'meeting-again--through-rebirth' thingy, sorry!

I'd high hopes after chapter 1, where Ember came off as a snappy strong heroine.
But no, Nate ruined it.

Witches and Vampires and Demons, oh my! Something Witchy has them all and I loved it. I haven't read a vampire book in a long time because I was kind of on vampire overload two years ago. I have been sort of burnt out on them lately, but Something Witchy reminded me how much I used to love them. To be fair, Something Witchy is more of a witch coming of age story than it is a vampire tale.

Ember doesn't know she's a witch, and 13`2Q`all of a sudden things start happening. Her long time friend starts acting weird and stalkerish, and then she meets Nathan. Jack was a huge jerk. I know he used to be Ember's friend, but we never got to see that good side of him. I kind of wish he was normal at the start of the book so we could witness him turning "bad", but we only see the creepy new version of him so I had no problem hating him right off the bat. Ember is whisked away by Nathan really early on in the book because he is trying to protect her and she certainly does not make it easy on him. She has some major trust issues. On one hand I really appreciated her skepticism and self preservation mode, but on the other hand I could tell that Nathan cared about her and was being so genuine and I just felt bad for the guy.

I liked that all of the characters pointed out how oblivious Ember could be when it came to Nathan, because it certainly seemed that way. I thought anyone would be able to tell that he was crazy in love with her, but she seemed to just not get it. The romance between the two of them was bumpy and rocky and anything but instant. I loved watching them interact and progress towards more than friends. Just to get her to admit she had feelings took forever! So when it finally did happen I wanted to cheer. I really like Nathan. I might like him a little more than I like Ember. But we will see in the next book because it is a battle between the two of them for my favorite. Ember is just so spunky that you can't help but love her.

I am interested to see what she tells her friend Kim, because she was gone for over a week with no explanation, but that wasn't addressed in this story. And I really want to know what Tyler is! And I can't wait to find out just how powerful Ember's powers will be now that her bind was lifted and she fully came into her powers. Can you tell how excited I am to read the second book? I thought Something Witchy was captivating and it set the stage for an awesome series! I think I am really going to love the mystics and mayhem series. Something Witchy was a great start to a really promising series. I can't wait to see more Nathan and Ember.

Where should I begin with this? I think I should probably start by saying that I received a copy of this from the author in exchange for a review.

What drew me to this book was the snarky humor I could already see shining through simply from the description and the whole thing about the "dead guy" who pretty much ruins Ember's day. It just sounded like a lot of fun.

And it was...kind of. For about a quarter or a third of the book, I really enjoyed Ember's snarky attitude. It was funny. Then there was this guy who comes out of nowhere and is really freaking hot. That's always fun.

But soon after that, that's when I started having problems. See, the snarky attitude started becoming a problem. Ember was trying to hide behind her snark, and that's vastly different than being funny. It was too much, considering almost everything out of her mouth was laced with attitude. I liked her strength of character, and I can respect that she had a temper on her, but the attitude should have been lightened up.

And then there's my huge issue with Nathan, the aforementioned "dead guy". In the beginning, I could buy into it, even though it was clearly something that never happens in real life. But then it got disturbing. He got incredibly possessive, demanding, and at least emotionally abusive. And no one thought this was weird. He acted as though everything he was doing was for Ember's well-being. I don't doubt that that's what his thinking was. But when Ember started accepting it as normal or good behavior, that's where I had to draw the line. Apparently, it's been modeled after Edward Cullen. There are tons of similarities between the two.

There weren't any good characters in the book, come to think of it. Everyone hurt Ember in some way or another, usually especially the ones she should have been able to trust. It was kind of a depressing read, in that respect.

There was also the problem of "show, not tell". As in, there was a lot of "Oh, I can see ghosts," but it's really never integrated into the book. There was a ton of telling, but very little showing. It was like this was how the characters were going to be, and that was that, forget about working it into the story.

And yet, for whatever reason, I kept trying to find 20-40 minutes to just sit and read it. It was a train-wreck of sorts, but it was addicting. Unfortunately, the farther I got into it, the more disturbed I became and it just turned me off. I got to the point where I just wanted to finish it and be done with it.

Witches, Ghosts, Vampires, and Demons, Oh My! Loved this book - it made my laugh and cry - sometimes on the same page. If you like new adult paranormal romance you will love this story. Now for a little bit about the story: Ember doesn't understand why her mother hates her. She is 18 now and in her senior year of high school and lives with the worst parents, two shrinks who tell others how to care for their children, even though they are horrible at it. She has three best friends: Blake and Kim (who have been dating for two years) are Jack (who she saved from bullies in third grade). She has finally went out on a date with Jack, only to have him turn into a stalker - she is very confused by the changes in him. She does everything she can to avoid him, but he always seems to find her. One day during a bait and switch escape, Ember and Kim are in Blake's truck and Blake has Ember's car. A fancy black sports car goes flying around her being chased by Jack's red Hummer. Now Jack is right on her tail (still thinking it is Blake) and unfortunately the sports car comes to a screeching halt. When she plows into it, Jack plows into her. Worried about Blake's reaction to his dented truck, she is startled when a dead guy gets out of the fancy sports car. She is even more startled when her friends can see him too. Ember has seen ghosts for a long time, but no one else can ever see them. As the sheriff's siren approaches Jack takes off. Blake shows up in Ember's car and offers to take Kim home if Ember can give the dead guy (aka Nathan or Nate to his friends) home. Little does Ember know her life is about to change by giving Nathan a ride home. She was instantly attracted to him, but still didn't understand why her friends could see the dead guy or how she could have a relationship with a ghost. Turns out Nate has secretly agreed to take Ember to her grandmother in exchange for discovering his soul mate. As Ember has fallen for Nate she is disappointed when she hears his side of the conversation knowing he is only with her to deliver her so he can leave and go to his soul mate. You'll have to read this book to see who is the witch, ghost, vampire, and demon and find out if Ember gets her happy ever after. Will she find her soul mate? Will she live to graduate high school?
