Does life imitate art? I believe it does or perhaps art reflects life. Either way, life and art are intertwined. In that truth, my books bear witness to the convoluted world in which we are all a part. After nearly thirty years in human services, I retired so that I could work more hours a week than I had ever done before to pursue my writing dream. My first book published in 2011 and was soon followed by others. As evident in A Father's Prayer/Lighthouse of the Carolinas, my books, whether suspense, romance, or futuristic, are themed from my experiences as a social worker. These stories involve the human struggle to overcome indignities that otherwise could defeat us. A graduate of North Syracuse High School, I went on to Houghton College, majoring in English and education. As my heroine in A Wonderful Love, I met my wonderful husband doing Community Theater. Three children and nine grandchildren later, we moved from Northern New York to enjoy the benefits of the sunshine state, mainly golf and daily walks. Now we have moved to Hagerstown, MD to be nearer our grandchildren. An award winning novelist, my mission is to entertain as well as encourage through the written word. I loved this book. It's a Wonderful Life is a favorite Christmas movie of mine. When I was searching for Christmas books to read, and saw this title, I knew I had to read this one this year.

Dorie's husband has died and she is struggling. She moved to the town her parents live in... from warm weather to cold northern winters. She is struggling to raise her kids and find a job. She is having a hard time meeting people, she sees an ad in the newspaper about auditions for a Christmas play... It's A Wonderful Life of course.

“Did she dare?... Still, what was the worst that could happen?
You'd look like a fool and find new depths of rejection.” pg.6

She gets the part and enjoys the new people she meets and being in the play.

The book is an adaption of the story of It's A Wonderful Life. The characters in the book mirror the play they are doing, differently of course but the same underlying themes. Move to the big city, follow your dreams, or stay and take over your father's business and marry the girl??? Yeah, I knew if it followed “It's a Wonderful Life” what would happen and I enjoyed it and liked the book a lot in spite of knowing how it would end.

Yes, this is a romance... and it's a good romance... no yucky stuff, just a couple of kisses. It is a great Christmas book. Yes, it is Christian too.

“Zeke glanced her way...and said, “You talking to me?”
“No, to the Man Upstairs, but sometimes I wonder if He's home.”
“Zeke's laugh cradled abundant joy. “Oh, He's always home, but sometimes we don't wait long enough for Him to answer.” pg 15

Love that quote. I have that problem. I want my prayers answered NOW. I want my problems solved now. I have a hard time waiting, especially years, for things to happen. The Bible says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” Prov. 13:12 Oh, how true.

Other favorite quotes.

“Daddy always said that a positive attitude was like a coat, and a person could choose to wear the hard times rolled in.” pg 128

“ Perhaps that's where trust was born—in the belly of the storm.” pg. 128

Hard times. Storms. We have had those. I totally understand and have felt both of these things.

Happy ending? Yup. Great one. Read it.

Hands down this romantic comedy is oe of Linda Rondeau's best book (and done with a great publisher). Dorie Fitzgerald returns to Midville, defeated, discouraged and alone. She joins a theater group and meets two men--a handsome doctor and an equally attractive, albeit geeky, actor. Let the fun and the resolutions begin.

Set with the backdrop of the well loved movie, It's A Wonderful Life, Rondeau weaves a spiritual thread and a warm hearted story.

I recommend this book.

"It Really IS A Wonderful Life" by Linda Wood Rondeau is a sweet romance for the Christmas season, or any time of year. Ms. Rondeau does a nice job of retelling a classic story with modern updates. In a cute twist, the novel's characters, who lead lives representative of the movie, are performing "It's a Wonderful Life" in their community theater. But everyone doesn't play the role you might think they will.

As the story opens, Dorie Fitzgerald's was killed in Iraq a year earlier and now she's moved with her two young children to Upstate New York to live near her parents. It's not where she grew up. Nothing and no one is familiar and Dorie feels out of place,an outsider. After yet another job rejection, she decides to audition for a part with the Midville Players, a community theater group.

Meanwhile, Jamey Sullivan has put his dreams of becoming an actor on hold for the past four years. His ailing father has needed him to run the family business, which his father refuses to sell. Now Jamey has an agent and could at any moment receive the call to join a Broadway show. Only problem - he's just met Dorie Fitzgerald and may just be falling for her.

Add to this mix Dr. Gabe Wellington. He also is attracted to Dorie. Along with this little love triangle there is a well-rounded cast of secondary characters. As Dorie forges friendships and finds her place in the Midville community, events unfold that draw people in unexpected directions.
Though the end is somewhat predictable - it is a wonderful life, after all - the story does serve up some surprises and pleasant twists. There is no Clarence the Angel, trying to earn his wings by showing George Bailey how the world would be worse off if he had never been. Likewise, the Harwood Industries isn't quite the same as Mr. Potter. What this novel does have is believable, three dimensional people. Dorie still struggles with grief, waggling between anger and despair as she strives to make a new life. Her kids are adorable with just the right amount of misbehaving so that any reader can easily picture them. Jamey wants so badly to get a part on Broadway yet he also strives to please his father. He borders on too perfect without actually crossing the line into complete fantasy. Both Branson Harwood Sr. and Junior fulfill the role of Mr. Potter with a new twist sure to delight Christian fiction readers. And, of course, there are all the quirky individuals found in small towns, most of them related to each other in some way.

"It Really IS A Wonderful Life" will surely become a classic holiday read, holding its own right alongside the movie.

REVIEW: Delightful, contemporary Christan romance full of wonderful gems of wisdom. With a similar plot line to the play It's a Wonderful Life, Dorie needs to find where and with whom God wants her to be. She is not the only one who needs to find where God has placed them in life. It all comes together as the characters get ready to perform It's a Wonderful Life for the town during Christmas. A bit predictable but still an enjoyable Christmas read.

FAVORITE QUOTES: "Getting sick isn't a punishment. I supposed once in a while God lets band things happen to get our attention. Most of the time, though, the body just gets sick. God care about us when we don't feel well and wants to help make us better."

"Home is not an address. It's where the heart lives."

"I'm not very knowledgeable about the Bible, but I believe God takes us where we are then does the cleaning up part."

"However, I think faith isn't knowldege. It's taking what God offers and claiming it as truth."

Dorie Fitzgerald’s life is a whirlwind of grief, and there seems to be no end to the downpour of discouragement. Widowed a year ago when her husband was killed in war, Dorie not only has to cope with his loss, but has moved back to small town Midville where the only thing deeper than the snow is her troubles. Raising two youngsters on her own is the frosting on her fear of failure.

The young widow is determined to stay in this Adirondack community where her parents live. But after four months of living in the frozen small town without finding work, she is feeling hopeless. A small blurb in the local paper, however, draws her attention: The Midville players are putting out a casting call for their upcoming production of “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Perhaps circulating with new townsfolk would open up opportunities for employment, Dorie hopes. Little does she know the real drama that will ensue.

This romantic story is so rich with believable dialogue, family dynamics, and interesting characters, I was quickly drawn into this appealing tale of the widow in mourning who struggles to survive in a new life not of her choosing. Dorie was such a sympathetic and appealing character who, more than once, had me in tears.

Author Linda Wood Rondeau’s prose was so descriptive and pleasant: “…pretense fouling the air like over-sprayed perfume;” “the frigid air biting like a hundred mosquitoes:” and my favorite line of all, “Perhaps that’s where trust was born, in the belly of the storm.” Rondeau’s words draw you in like the smell of cider on a chilly afternoon. Lovely.

I highly recommend this romantic novel at Christmastime, or any time of year.

Just finished this quick read at 3 AM--it was a page turner and a twisty-turny journey to happily ever after for two young people at a corssroads in thier lives. Dorie Fitzgerald is left to raise her two young children after her husband Captain Devon Fitzgerald dies in the Iraqi war. She moves to be near her parents' home in upstate NY, and rents a house from her father while her mother provides daycare. She struggles to find a job, and decides to get to know the community through a local theater production of "Its a Wonderful Life". She meets two eligible bachelors and is swept from one romance to another, but her heart is drawn to the quiet and unassuming Jamey Sullivan. Jamey is an aspiring and agented actor on the cusp of his dream, but has laid aside his personal ambitions for a season to see to his dying father's affairs. The last thing on his mind is romance and family when the Broadway lights beckon. But something about Dorie makes it harder than ever to leave the small town behind. It isn't Bedford Falls, but he is a doppelganger for George Bailey, and there is a Mr. Potter type of monopoly threatening to take over the town of Midville in the form of Junior Harwood.
In this contemporary Christmas classic redeaux, everyone finds a happily ever after--even Junior Harwood and the spurned love interest. Jamey gives up his Broadway debut for the quiet small town life and settles down with Dorie, her son Josh and daughter Emma, and a dog named Boomer. The town is spared from a monopoly and welcomes back their hometown boy scout leader and erstwhile hero. And the struggling characters find through faith and budding romance that it really is a wonderful life.

Dorie has moved to a small town in upstate New York in order to be near her parents. Her husband was killed in Afghanistan and she needs family to be near her and her 2 children.

This story is about how Dorie learns to trust the new town, and not make snap judgments about her new friends and neighbors. It is also about trusting enough to find love again.

This is a book about renewing one's faith and remembering God's promise to support us no matter what the situation.

Dorie is having a difficult time. Her children are becoming more independent. She would like to keep them young and reliant on her. At the same time she does not want to rely on her parents for so much in her life. Her struggles are helping her find a new path for her life.

I enjoyed the book. It is a quick read, and the only complaint I have is that I would have liked a little more detail in the final portion of the book.

Dorie Fitzgerald is trying to pick up the pieces of her life in a new hometown. Enter Jamey Sullivan and Dr. Gabe Wellington. They all meet during a local production of Its a Wonderful Life.

While Dorie finds herself drawing closer to God and looking for answers, she wonders which of these men would fit best in her life. Gabe tries hard to fit in, but Dorie wonders if staying with him would be settling. While Jamey Sullivan seems like the perfect person to fit into her life, he is not certain if staying in his hometown is what he wants. Jamey has an opportunity to persue his dream on Broadway.

The story is a charming little Christmas story, with comforting characters and easy to understand situations faced by many. The little book keeps you want to read to see, if those characters you come to care about, find happiness during the Christmas season.

So February is probably not the time of year most people like to read holiday books, but for me it was the perfect time of year. This story caught my eye and captured my heart within a few moments. I found myself cheering for Dorie and her children immediately. I could relate to cars with bald tires and batteries. I could relate to being unemployed. I could also relate to feelings of loneliness and sadness over loss. Linda Wood Rondeau captured all of the emotions of single parenting well (dealing with uncooperative children, etc). Her characterization was excellent and I loved the hero, Jamey. Will I want to read this book again closer to Christmas? Most definitely! It's worth re-reading!

I love how they were trying to do as God willed.
Praying for God to lead their lives.
For Dorie to get settled close to her mom and dad, then having to raise 2 kids by herself, it is rough getting settled.
Losing your husband is hard but having family close sure helps.
Jamey wanted to get to know Dorie but things kept getting in the way.
They worked together for a little while.
Things worked out as it should.

I bought this book for my wife because she wishes I'd be more romantic and a novel about Christmas and romance seemed like a sure pick. The first few pages hooked me. Now I have to hurry and finish reading so I can slip it into my wife's Kindle before Christmas. :) Based on what I've read so far this is the perfect stocking stuffer for the husband too lazy to drive to the mall.

I had trouble getting into this book. But that was me. I thought it was somewhat slow in the middle, but it finished with a flourish. Even if you've seen the movie (and it would help to watch the movie before reading this book), this version still brings the story full circle in a beautful way. Well worth your time.

A quick read that is sweet and romantic. Like most Christian fiction, it is a bit predictable, but there are some twists and turns before you get to the expected end. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it for anyone looking for something light and uplifting.

This is a story you can read any time of the year, not just Christmas time. Sweet romance with believable characters, settings, dialogue and story line. Some Christian influence without being preachy. Very enjoyable.

This is the first story by this author for me, but it certainly won't be the last. I am a fan from here on out. WONDERFUL!

A little mushy and everything works out too easy for my taste. I like the Christian focus and the basic story line. But not very realistic.

Two stars on goodreads means okay. Yep, it was just okay.

Again, reminded me of a (longer version) story that would have been in one of my mom's Woman's Day magazines this time of year many years ago.

It was very predictable, and I wish the faith it in wasn't so namby pamby.

This book not only reminds us of the classic movie, but it is a story of two people who feel compelled to leave the place where God has placed them. They learn that sometimes we serve God best in our own backyard.

Believe or not

I have always enjoyed the movie and this is a wonderful version of the story. To see it from the other side, giving Jamey a chance at his dream and letting him make the choice to remain in town. That is just what it is about.
