Strange good graphic novel!

Wow, this is incredibly twisted.
Ruppert and Mulot are doing innovative things here - they integrate phenakistoscopes, sign language, stereographics, and other unusual elements into a bizarre tale of two photographers as they sneak into a zoo to witness an orgy. There's a lot of kink, a lot of violence, a lot of deformed people and plotlines. There is a scene of monkey sex. This book will offend many.
It is stunning, if you think of stunning as coming from a stun gun.
Not for the faint of heart or sensitive. They are playing with some interesting ideas here, and obviously doing it in interesting ways, but I never did emotionally connect, and didn't end up persevering through the whole thing, skimming the last few pages. It's particularly interesting to see these techniques used with such spare drawing styles.

Yes, this was one of Slate's best books of 2013. Yes, I love quirk, weird, and just plain odd. And yes, I'm normally not this hard on books but this just plain sucked. In fact, Mr. Slate Book Editor, I want my money back. That's how lame this is...

Hyvin samaa tyyliä kuin samojen tekijöiden Uhkapeliä. Tämä albumi koostuu pienistä, todella julmista tarinoista, joita yhdistää mustaakin mustempi huumori sekä omituinen kehyskertomus. Kerrontatyyli ei ole kovin kutsuva: ruudut vaativat usein tarkkaa tiiraamista, että tarinan juoni selviää (sikäli kun se edes on mahdollista). Erityistä tässä kirjassa ovat optiset illuusiot, jotka ovat jotain todella uutta sarjakuvassa. Ainakaan minä en ole ennen nähnyt piirrettyjä stereokuvia, saati sarjakuvaa, joka on sijoitettu läpinäkyvän 3d-stereokuvakuution kuudelle sivulle. Aika hämmentävää. Harmi vain, että tarinoiden aiheet ovat täynnä väkivaltaa, seksiä, väkivaltaista seksiä ja seksuaalista väkivaltaa. Tekijöiden suvereenia taitoa sopisi nähdä käytettävän johonkin miellyttävämpäänkin.
