Before. Everything was so much better Before. I wasn’t haunted by nightmares, my place at school was secure and my face was flawless. Now, I’m a freak and everything has changed. The worst part is that I can’t remember the night I was sentenced to the shadows. The memory has been stolen from me and I just can’t shake the feeling that someone, something is out there -watching. Just when I think I have my life handled, Sam, with his intimidating golden stare and shiver inducing voice, makes me realize that I don’t know anything. He makes me see that my scars don’t matter. That they never mattered. I can’t help but fall for him, completely unknowing that he knows exactly how I got this way. Not knowing he was involved.
Heven has no idea how closely death stalks her. She has no idea what I have done to keep her alive. I fear the day she learns my secrets, finds out what I really am. But even then I cannot stop, I vow to make things right. Finally her hunter will be hunted, Heaven and Hell, faith and sin will battle, and we will be victorious. But first, Heven must learn to be what she never imagined. I know her strength is there – I feel it. If we are to overcome all odds, she must push past her flaws - her frailties - to become much more.

Let first say that Masquerade was dipped in awesomesauce with a side of superb! This book was beautifully written. I loved the different points of view throughout the book and the characters were lovable and fierce at the same time which is my favorite combination.
We have Heven, who you get to know in Before as a popular girl who has it all. She is about to be named captain of the cheer team, has the gorgeous best friend/ wing woman, and is about to start dating Brice the majorly hot football player. Sounds like a great fantasy right?
It's shattered because soon after that there is an accident and Heven is left disfigured with scars on half her face. Now in Masquerade we find Heven hiding from the world. Gone is the confident carefree cheerleader, what is left is a girl trying to survive.
I love Heven because we journey with her through her self discovery of self-worth. I don't want to go on and list all the things about Heven that I love because I think you will discover them for yourselves and I don't want to spoil anything. Let's just say she is a kick-butt teenage heroine that mom's all over the world can be assured that their daughters have found a stunning positive role model.
Next we have Sam... I really can't say too much about Sam without spoiling some things except that he is such a sweetheart! Let me see what I can tell you about Sam... there is not really a stereo type I can give you because he is a little bit of everything all rolled up into one nice package. Sam spots Heven one day and it changes his world. He is disparately in love with her and just wants to watch her and keep her safe. But Sam also has a dark secret...
Staring in my fantasy's this week was Garrett Hedlund as Sam. With his flashing hazel/gold eyes, strong body, and good looks we have one yummy character.
This was an absolute MUST read! Ms. Hebert is an author to keep you eye on because I have a feeling this is just the start of a parade of amazing books we are going to see from her. I am a fan and I will be reading anything she puts out now!
Thank you to Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy Fanatics! the BEST group on goodreads! And to the lovely and talented Ms. Cambria Hebert wicked cool book girl!
I would change absolutely NOTHING about this book.
Rating – 5 Stars!!! Recommended for –Teens and Adults
Dark, twisted, full of unexpected turns- Masquerade does not lack in originality! You go in this expecting certain developments when all of a sudden, the rug gets swept out from under your feet you get thrown into a completely unconventional story. To be honest - I freaking loved it!!
Masquerade is told in alternative perspectives between Heven and Sam. After Heven's attack - by who or what, she doesn't remember - she has these horrible scars covering the left side of her face which has completely changed her world. That is, until she meets Sam. Gorgeous, incredibly sweet Sam who makes her feel as beautiful as before. But Sam has some deep dark secrets. Secrets that are bound to transform Heven's life all over again. This is a story where you'll love going over theories in your head and trying - and failing - to figure it all out. Getting a glance at both POVs keeps the mystery thick and the romance alive. We also get a peek at the villain's perspective. I didn't enjoy this one as much, however. It reminded me of the cheesy scenes in comics where you get a glimpse of the villain muttering empty threats. Fortunately, they are far and few - the focus is kept on Heven's story.
Expect a lot of twists and turns in Masquerade! And believe me, you will not see them coming. My assumptions were completely thrown off track. It starts as a simple enough - even seemingly contemporary - story. But by the end, you won't even know what hit you! Cambria does not shy away from eccentric plot developments for which I have to applaud. It wasn't at all what I expected; nevertheless, I was not disappointed in the least. The romance, however, does leave a little to be desired. There is definite passion and steamy scenes, but the relationship develops very quickly which didn't give me the chance to really feel their connection from the beginning.
All in all, Cambria gives us a peculiar tale with tons of surprises and great personalities. If you're looking for something unique, Masquerade is the book to pick up!
It's the same pattern used over and over, again and again.
Stage 1: New girl meets hot boy. Or new boy meets hot girl. (Of course the girl doesn't think she's pretty, she's too damn insecure)
Stage 2: INSTANT LOVE! They look at each other for the first time and in two seconds, BOOM, love at first fucking sight.
Stage 3: I wanna know more about you, let's talk.
Stage 4: Now let's go on an adventure to defeat the bad guy!
Stage 5: Okay adventure's over, let's make out and spend the rest of our boring teenage lives in each other's arms.
Stage 6: You thought it was over? MWAHAHAHA ...UNTIL NEXT TIME! Get ready for book number 2!
-___-
Okay, fine. If authors want to use this pattern, whatever, go for it. I triple dog dare you, actually, but at least create some sort of original storyline and plot.
Our main character, Heven (lol @ her name. Heaven/Heven..get it? Ms. Hebert should have just named her Nevaeh for God's sake, to make the connection less noticeable.) was a combination of the girl from North of Beautiful and Ever from The Immortals series. Now, I read the first two pages of North of Beautiful a while ago in the bookstore and never picked it back up again, but to my recollection, the female girl had some sort of injury that marred her face too. And Ever, from The Immortals series, used to be this super popular cheerleader but is not anymore because of some car accident that killed her parents. Ever is now labeled a freak, and every day, she hides her face and body with baggy clothes to avoid everyone in the world. Sounds familiar? Now put these two girls together and bam, HEVEN MONTGOMERY.
Oh, Heven, I really don't like you.
It's not because she's insecure (Well, well, well... should I even be surprised that she's so unconfident? Why couldn't the author make her kind of similar to Kristy from The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen? Kristy has scars all over her face because of a car accident, but do you think she hides herself? NO, she flaunts her hot body because she knows she is the shit, and she has this thing called confidence! And she doesn't give a fuck about other people's opinions towards her because she is a true, strong character. She is brave. Go get some bravery, Heven, and then I'll talk to you. And she isn't the only character I know who has an "ugly" scar. Have you forgotten about Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender? Zuko's scar defines Zuko, and I find his scar pretty hot, actually. But then again, I love Zuko so much. Okay, fine. I'll admit that I don't really know what Heven's scars look like, but I'm sure all scars look more or less the same), but because she is a selfish bitch.
Yeah, I went there.
Sam is hot remember? So girls will flirt with him. And when Heven's best friend starts playfully flirting with Sam, Heven over the fuck reacts.
"I said loyal to my friend even while I asked myself why I should since she was with Sam. Clearly her loyalty to me wasn't as strong as I thought." (10%. Sorry, I'm using my kindle- no page numbers)
.
.
.
Are you shitting me, Heven?
Obviously Kimber wouldn't even had flirted with your crush if you told her you ZOMG liked him IN THE FIRST PLACE.
And just because you guys shared a two second moment, you just assume he's all yours?
Who the fuck do you think you are?
God.
Whatever.
The beginning of this book was really decent, I liked it. There were some really exciting high school moments going on, and I really like Cole, but as soon as I was 10% into the book, I knew Masquerade wasn't for me.
And do you know what also bothered me?
There was no romance development.
And Sam is so sketchy it's actually creepy. And again, with The Immortals series reference, he is like a carbon copy of Damen. Damen is also super super mysterious and is emancipated from his parents and shit.
I don't understand how Heven can like Sam.
Sure he's gorgeous, but that's really the only reason.
Oh right, she feels "safe" with him.
So what kind of supernatural creature is Sam?
I don't fucking know, and quite frankly, I don't care.
I'm just not interested.
Sorry that this is the first 1-star review you received for this book, Ms. Hebert. Wait, why am I even apologizing? I was given this social network to express my thoughts and opinions, and those were my thoughts and opinions.
I'll finish this book in the near? future. Maybe?
Nahhhh.
-- (New theme for my all reviews: corny pick up lines:) My love for you is like diarrhea, I just can't hold it in!
I’ll leave you to stew in that for a minute. Yes Heven. She has scars on her face because of a terrible accident that she can’t remember. If you want to know more about what happened to her, you can pick up the book’s prequel called ‘Before’. You know how I know that? There’s really no way to escape it. The prequel is referenced constantly in the book. Every time that word is used, it is capitalised and in italics; Before. Ominous. Alluring. Cashing-in.
So Heven is disfigured and not happy about it. She wears hooded tops to cover her face and states once or twice that she has lost a bit of her confidence. That’s how we know she has feelings. She wears hoodies. And lets us know she’s lost her confident a smidge.
Kay.
You’re probably wondering what the plot of Masquerade is and honestly same? Honestly, the amount of nothing that takes up a huge chunk of this novel; it’s just one-dimensional characters discussing clothes and boys. There are paragraphs and paragraphs describing what different characters are wearing. Facebook statuses have more depth than this. And so far … this is our plot. Clothes and boys. And Heven in a hoodie. And she’s having some feelings. We know because she told us.
Oh, but then the love interest arrives.
Meet Sam. He is “tall, well-built without being bulky, and the back of his head held shaggy, dark blond hair”. As anyone can tell by that stunning description, he is ridiculously hot, so we immediately know he’s important. And lo, as soon as Heven lays eyes on him, and he on her for that matter, they fall instantly and irreconcilably in love.
Still no plot, y’all.
Sam’s only personality trait is how in love with Heven he is and how beautiful he finds her, despite her disfiguring scars. What are his hobbies? Stalking Heven, of course. But where does he work? He has a job as Heven’s full-time body guard now, thanks for asking. Does he have any—Heven. No need to see the menu, ta. Heven.
Heven and Sam become a couple in the blink of an eye and they are head over heels in love with each other. It’s not until the halfway mark that the plot catches up to their epic love—ru-oh raggy, there’s some shady shit happening with Sam! There’s a couple of pages where he fights a monster. What is this beast? What does it look like? Well, it’s a monster, we don’t need any further illustration, don’t bore us with details please! I want to see what Heven’s wearing, in between all the proofing errors, yay!
We eventually find out Sam’s deal. Turns out he’s a hellhound werewolf whatsit. Heven is scared of him for a bit, sure. But then she … uh … she runs away with him.
And gets murdered.
I would have rated this book much higher if it had ended there; brilliant. But no, the honest-to-god grim reaper rocks on up and allows Sam to lay down his life to save her. And then in another genius twist of events, the grim reaper revives the both of them, as Heven just so happens to be a “supernatural treasure”. With magic powers. And Sammy needs to protect her. Look! They can now read each others’ minds now! Heven can see auras! They find this ancient map – this incredible celestial map that was lost for centuries that Heven just happens to stumble upon! And now she has opened the door for a whole bunch of sequels.
Review is yet to come, but I'll leave you with a visual aid. This is my face right now and for most part of the story,,

Yep,,I've lost my ability to think straight and the words just slip from my mind,,
Reviewed on 12/16/11
You know when people say that appearances don’t matter? That a person’s interior is what it counts? Well, it’s a really sweet thought and wee feel so good about ourselves thinking that people are good and that the interior beauty is what’s important. Well, that’s great and all, but is a load of bull,,, appearances does matter and people, most of them anyway, are shallow and treat you as good as you look. I know that I sound cold and like I have no faith in people, but in some of them, I really don’t. And if you think I’m lying just go ask Heven and she will tell you. Ok, she really won’t cose she is not real, but if she was she totally would.
Ok,, I’m babbling again so lets get to the review so you can see what am I talking about,, LoL,,,
The Plot - A pretty and very pop girl is living her happy and shiny life like the world is all right ,, guys are all over her and she is as oblivious to the things around her as every other cheerleader….
But then, oh, something horrible happens and she becomes, well, not the belle of the ball anymore, so she started to kind of shield her self from people
She is like,, “Oh, I’m a monster, nobody will ever like me no more," Well, that was until ,, someone appears and makes her feel like no one else ever did Before and he is as hot as hell and with a smile that will melt your heart,, LoL
You can say that I like that plot,, I like it very much LoL
The Characters - They are alive, they are aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!!!! LoL It’s a little Frankenstein of me, but this is sooooo true. I see them and I feel like I know them too. I love this feeling and the fact that When I’m talking to my friends I keep saying, Oh, is so like when Heven did that and so my friends look at me and say, Like who? And then I remember, Oh, she is not real. LoL, well, in my head she is, but you get the picture. LoL Lets talk about the ones I like the most shall we? Kim, when Heven talks about her I see a hurricane, strong, impulsive and that sometimes can damages in a big way, but she has her heart in the right place and she doesn’t mean to. It’s just her nature and she can’t help it. Cole, I still don’t know what’s up with him, maybe in the next book I’ll figure him out LoL. Heven is a little slow on me and seeing her going around the story was pretty much like watching a baby dear learning to stand on its own, adorable + scary and a little annoying some times but you can’t help the “ohhhhh,,,” that comes with it. Sam I love him. Yeah Heven, I’m not afraid of saying it. I love Sam. I can even sing it:
Loving you is easy Cause you're beautiful (and super duper hot) Making love with you (prrrrrr) Is all I wanna to do Loving you is more than Just a dream comes true Cause everything that I do (every single thing) Is out of loving you
The Writing - I’ve said this already. Cambria is the bomb and her writing is enchanting. First person perspective and I get to see trough Sam’s eyes,, Cambria, your writing got me in Sam’s POV. I love being inside his head and I really wanted to be inside his heart. Oh, crap. I just got all fangirl over this review and I really didn’t want to. Dam Cambria, look what you did to me!!!!!!!
Considerations - First I would like to say thank you Cambria for letting me read this beautiful story even before its release. Thank you!!!!!! Is really a great book and the only reason that it took me so long to read it is my lack of time and the reason that it took me sooooo long to do my review is that I had so many things to say and all of them were ginormous spoilers so I had to redo it like 20 times before I got it right LoL. Even though I really love this book, there’s still one thing that I didn’t care so much: high school and the blab bla bla about he said, she said. This is one of those occasions that I say: I’m too old for this shit. I get that it’s part of the story and all, but I can’t help drag myself trough that part of the story. But I can say how much I love everything after that hell was over: A LOT!!! As I said before, I’m too old for this shit, LoL
Aside from this slow part that it was just slow cose of me and my terrible memories of high school (hummpf) the story is worth the pain,, really. We see Heven evolve into a powerful girl and ,,sorry, I can’t say it cose this is the best part of the book, to read and learn and see things with Heven and just like her, to be in the dark until the magic moment when light hit you and take your breath away. I think my heart just gave a jump just thinking about it. LoL
I recommend this book to everyone that believes in love and how it can change you in the most deep and meaningful way. I tried to be profound and stuff, but I winded up babbling, as usual,, sorry LoL
Masquerade is a YA Paranormal novel about a girl named Heven who just entered her Senior year in High School. One night while coming home from the library, she is visciously attacked and left for dead. Heven wakes up in the hospital with the left side of her face horribly scarred and no memories of the awful event. She is even begins to wonder if she did it herself. Like anyone who would have gone through such an unthinkable ordeal, Heven becomes a recluse. Dressing in baggy clothes, using her hair to hide her face and doing anything to avoid bringing any attention to herself is how she now lives her life as opposed to her once outgoing and lifestyle Before. Feeling alone and scared all the time, watching the shadows, Heven lives in a constant state of panic and fear. No one can comfort her or make her feel normal again, not even her best friends. All that is about to change when a new hottie student arrives out of nowhere named Sam. The attraction to him is immediate for her and she can’t fathom why he seems to feel the same for her. Heven doesn’t see her inner beauty as Sam does, or does he? Is Sam really JUST a new student? Or, is there another reason why he is there and trying desperately to win her affection. And what REALLY happened that fateful night at the library? One person knows the answers to all of her questions about that night, the question is, who is it and can she trust them?
Masquerade begins shrouded in mystery and quickly catapults to suspense. Just when one question is answered, another one is thrown at you and I love it! Cambria Hebert is a masterful storyteller in the way that she sets the scenes for the reader. With her descriptions of the characters, I can envision them clearly in mind. The way she writes what Heven has gone through and her emotions, I can feel the pain and sadness myself. And the fight scenes, those are EPIC! With so much detail and without going overboard, I can see it all so clearly and makes me not want to run into Hebert in a dark alley! Masquerade is also told from several view points of different characters to give you the inside look of each characters thought process. This technique is not easily done, however Hebert writes it in such a way that it is easy for the reader to follow and gives you more insight to the characters, making it a much more entertaining and enjoyable read. I love the fact that Cambria Hebert has given us a flawed herione to read about. So many stories today give you a perfect beauty as the main character or a plain Jane with potential. Not Hebert, she gives you a herione with a tragic injury, leaving the character full of self doubt without sounding whiny. You find yourself empathizing for Heven instead of secretly hating her. You are willing her to win and cheer when she finally accepts who she is. To be quite honest, I was about to give up on reading any and all YA paranormal books due to the fact that they all seem to be about the same thing with just a different title. I am so glad that I gave this book a chance! Cambria Hebert breathes new life into the genre giving me hope for it’s future. In short, I would recommend this book to any and everyone looking for a fresh new take on YA or just looking to read an amazing book in general. I eagerly await the next installment to see what the rest of Heven’s journey holds and to also follow Hebert of her own amazing journey of what’s sure to be the next “ Big Thing”!
I never thought it'd be so hard to write a review about a book I loved, but here I am, not knowing what to say about this fabulous book...
Ok, let's take it one step at a time.
The story: Masquerade is the first book of the Heven and Hell series. Heven is a teenage girl who after a terrible attack she can't remember got disfigured. Her life had changed completely after that, she lost everything, her friends, her selfconfidence, her life. But after a new boy arrives at her school everything is about to change once more. Sam is everything any girl would ever hope for, or at least that what it seems like. He has a terrible secret and he seems to know more about Heven's accident that even she does.
The characters: I loved Sam. Through out the whole book he was my favourite of them all. Always protecting and loving Heven, but still always feeling like he was evil deep inside. Perfect boyfriend material from any point of you. And I loved seeing everything through his eyes. His PoV was my favourite. Heven is the actual main character but although I loved her and felt sorry for her she wasn't my fav. I didn't like seeing her not feeling comfortable in her own skin, but after thinking about it I realized that she was the most normal person in the whole book. Exactly like a real life person. She has her own fears and insecurities and she grows the most as a character. I really started liking her new self at the end of the book. I think I am going to love her even more on book two. All the other characters where great too. Kimber and Cole, Heven's cuckoo mum, her granmother, they were all very unique and interesting characters. Yeah, even Heven's cuckoo mum.
The writing was adorable. Cambria is a really great writer and you can get captivated by every single word.
I especially loved the last few chapters. They are setting the mood for the next book, which I am sure I am going to love because of where it'll take place. No spoilers, but I am also going there this March! :)
I really enjoyed Masquerade. It was intriguing, and quite different to have a main character be so psychological scarred but still easy for the reader to identify with. Yes, she was a cheerleader, a trendsetter, a social butterfly... but that was before.
I was worried at first that the youthful voice of Heven might grate or turn into a pity party, but I really don't feel it did that. Masquerade manages to balance on that fine line of remaining true to a younger character but without the common side effect of alienating an older audience.
I found the story to be innocent but innovative. Honest. I am quite interested in continuing the series to see what the future holds. I have a few theories of my own on what may happen.
Quotes
"I took a minute to fully stare at it. In a way it was beautiful - scary as hell - but beautiful."
"The World Wide Web saves the day."
"I was surprised by the shot of gold that was like lightning through his whiskey-colored stare."
I found this book to be appropriate for all YA readers, even younger teens should be fine with the themes, subject matter, and level of violence. If you are an adult with a love for YA, this book should not disappoint your craving for angst.
I really loved this book. After receiving the short prequel for review a few weeks ago I could not wait to get my hands on the full length novel, for the 'real' start to this series. I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I loved every single second of it and became so hooked to the story and unable to put it down I almost missed my train home. Yea, no more reading at the train station for me.
Heven has always had the perfect life, she was pretty, popular and could have any guy she wanted. But that was before her accident. An accident she has no recollection of that left her with scars running down one side of her face. Now she believes she is ugly, she withdraws into herself and refuses to draw attention to herself. Enter Sam, the gorgeous mysterious new boy at school that Heven feels drawn to. But Sam is hiding a big secret. One that may force Sam and Heven apart forever.
I was completely blown away by this book. Every time I had to put the book down I just wanted to pick it back up again. I didn't want to sleep I wanted to stay up all night and read to find out what was going to happen next. Heven is such a great character, I really felt for her throughout the whole book. She has had such a hard time lately, having to come to terms with her facial disfigurement and when things start looking up, bad things start to happen again. I love how vulnerable she was. Usually I'm all about the lead female character being strong and taking no crap from nobody and don't get me wrong she is a strong character but I loved seeing her vulnerable side. You can't expect her to be completely strong all the time and at the beginning of the book she isn't very strong. She is so ashamed of her face that she withdraws from everyone and I felt so sorry for her. This thing I loved the most about Heven is how she grows as a character throughout the book. She starts off as a social outcast (or she Heven believes) and she grows stronger, she starts seeing herself and the world differently and I thought that was amazing. She overcomes so much and I love how she grows into a strong character who won't let fear run her life anymore. She's such a great character and she really develops over the book. Sam. Oh, Sam. The first thing that comes into me head is just how much I love him. He is the character all the girls will fall in love with. He's strong, protective, gorgeous and mysterious. He is such a tortured soul and what girl doesn't love a tortured soul who needs saving? I love the way Sam is portrayed even before he meets Heven you can completely see his love and protectiveness of her. I love that about him. He doesn't care about anything else, let alone himself as long as Heven is okay. I just love him. When his secrets started to come out I was reading with bated breath for Heven's reaction and praying that it didn't separate them.
What a brilliant start to a series I am so excited to see where the story goes and cannot wait for the next book. Cambria is definitely an author to watch out for and I can't wait to read more of her work.
Heven scurries home from her late, study session at the library. The crisp, click of her heels on the pavement, echoing in the darkness, as she hurries to each inviting, safe, splash of light, dotted along the sidewalk that break up night's dark blanket. Suddenly, there is a rustle in the bushes, a streaking blur, followed by ferocious growling and clawing. Heven's piercing scream shatters the stillness, as she awakens; a sweaty, trembling heap in a tangle of sheets. Another nightmare disturbs her slumber. A cool, slosh of water on her face and an inadvertent glance in the mirror reveals the cruel, slashes on the side of her face, reminders that the terrors in the night are now reality. The twisted scars, remnants from that fateful evening, when an unknown assailant attacked her and forever changed her world. Now, Heven is thin, pale and constantly hiding her once beautiful face behind a curtain of golden hair. Gone are the short skirts and bright smiles, replaced by baggy hoodies and slouches. The halls of her high school where she once chattered and giggled with friends, today are a gauntlet of whispers and stares. At least Kimber, her best friend, has remained loyal and at her side. Heven is haunted by the fear that something is stalking her every move. She continually glances over her shoulder, trying to shake that terrible feeling of unease. Then a handsome, blonde boy shows up at school and Heven is inexplicably drawn to him; yet, her scarred face holds her timidly in the shadows, but why is it when Sam is near she feels safe? Why is he such a source of comfort? What secrets is he hiding?
What I Liked: *I enjoyed the evolution of Heven. In the beginning of the book, she is a frail, scared recluse, far removed from the glory of her head cheerleader days. It was an eye opening experience to see her decline and witness the suffering, that stems from the mutterings and pitiful gazes of her peers. This novel brings to light the pain and struggles that so many disfigured people endure. Hopefully, Heven's story will speak to readers and perhaps it can even help some of these victims. As Heven navigates through her new life, she begins to accept her image and slowly she transforms and becomes the beautiful girl that radiates from inside; no longer letting her scars define her. This is the aspect of the story I appreciated most. By the end of the book, Heven is confident, determined and strong; an amazing transformation. *Sam is an enigma. He is brave, noble, and protective, as well as good looking. The tender, terms of endearment that fall from his lips will cause many hearts to flutter. Yet, he is clearly hiding a big secret. There are hints that lead you to believe that Sam might be one of the typical, paranormal, male leads but when his true identity was exposed, I was shocked! The reveal was unexpected, creative and far different from anything I anticipated. A clever, twist that readers will devour! To learn the specifics of his past tore at my heart strings, but it clearly defined him and helped him to become the strong man he is today. He may have his stash of secrets but he is still a responsible gentleman, who loves to drink bubble tea (I am now in search of a taste of this delightful beverage). He has definitely thrown his hat into the competition for favorite, paranormal hunk. *Heven has her scars and Sam his secrets but love allows them to see beyond the obstacles and they learn to accept each other as they are. A wonderful message! *I admired Ms. Hebert's fluid, easy writing style. The story naturally flows along with just the right amount of precise detail. I liked the way she carefully described Heven's apparel, a well as a typical day. I loved the different and clever array of descriptive words and phrases that are prevalent throughout. Cambria Hebert is certainly a talented new voice in the young adult world. *The story is suspenseful; I enjoyed that I spent the entire time calculating my guesses, only to find time and time again, that I was wrong. This book is brimming with the unexpected. Just when you think you have the story figured out, it morphs into something beyond expectation. It is unique among the other books I have read in the paranormal genre. Be prepared to be shocked and dazzled!
And The Not So Much: *Heven's mother remains a mystery. In the beginning she appears to be a typical mom, who cooks an ample amount of atrocious chicken. She is always nagging Heven to attend bible study, which caused me to raise an eyebrow in skeptic wonder (even though I can't really do the one eyebrow trick). As events transpired, I understood why she insisted on Heven, reading the Bible (don't worry this is not a book with heavy, religious undertones) but I never had a firm understanding of the why and how behind her motives. I would like further clarification on the mother's behavior and her beliefs. *I still had a few unanswered questions regarding the other two point of views: The Hate and The Hope. I am not clear on all the motivating factors behind the voices. Sometimes, the additional view points broke up the even movement of the story line; leaving me pondering their importance in the plot. Cambria Hebert's, Masquerade, is a paranormal, debut novel that should end up atop the lists for best, new, young adult novels of 2011. This book delivers everything you hunger for in a good book. There is tender, romance, biting action and thick suspense, as well as several, shocking turns of events. Many of these unforeseen elements will no doubt, astound and astonish readers. Masquerade is a book you won't want to miss. I advise you to get your hands on a copy immediately! You will tear through it and wonder when you can read the next installment! I can't wait to take a tour to Italy with Sam and Heven in the next book, Spring 2012!

Before I say anything, I have to tell you to read the short novel called 'Before' that prequels this book. It is definately worth taking that short step, it is a definate warm up to this journey.
Cambria Hebert is an author that I haven't heard of before and her book grabbed me because of the cover. Having read the synopsis, I decided to put my name forward for the R2R (Read to Review) and I am so happy I did!!
This book grabbed me within the first 3% and from then on, I was putting updates on Goodreads all the way through!!!! I had NO IDEA what was going to happen and when it did happen, I NEVER KNEW what the next step would be!!!!
I tried to 2nd guess most of the time and all of the time I was wrong!!
Heven is a young girl that is recovering from an accident (see short novel 'Before')that has left her face badly scarred and her confidence at an all time low.
Sam has been following Heven around for a while (for a few good reasons) and soon becomes the 'new' guy at the school.
Kimber is Heven's best friend and Cole is Kimber's boyfriend.
These, you would think, set up the main characters! However, you have Heven's mother and gran, you have China (read book to find out who she is!) and Sam's 2 room-mates and then there are 2 mysterious characters that I HAD TO FIND OUT about (and did, to a degree) and then a late arrival toward the end of the book.
The story is captivating, it is full of mystery and loads of wonder!!! I had no idea that it would contain what it does, the paranormal experience was a fabulous surprise! Personally, I LOVED it and there is obviously going to be another book following and when it comes out, I will be right there buying it!!!
I must admit; I'm a reading addict. I love the feel of paper books, the instantaneous gratification of an ebook and the anticipation whenever I'm starting a new book. Will this book pull me so far into its story that sleep, school, work, family and maybe food will pale in comparison to turning the page? Most of the time -- sleep is the only thing I skip so please don't call Book Addicts Anonymous. The point I was trying to make is that I read ALOT of ya and after awhile I get to the point of screaming...."Not another love triangle...not another weepy female mc....why are you dumping _____ for ______. Please, for the love of G*D, give me something different Mr./Ms. Author. Inspire me. Scare me. Make me cry. Make me care about the characters in your book! Make me turn the page, I DARE YOU!"
Apparently, Cambria Hebert was listening to me. And once I get beyond the creep factor of that ---- I feel so privileged that she offered me a copy for this book for review. When doing a review; either for a first-reads win or an author request, I will say with tempered honesty if I like something or whether improvements are needed.
In this case, I can say without any hesitation that this series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I thought so after reading the prequel, Before and confirmed with Masquerade.
There is an originality in this book that needs to be experienced by ya fans! You meet Sam and Heven in the prequel, Before. Heven is beautiful and popular, a cheerleader with boyfriend potential waiting in the wings. She sparkles, not in a vampirey-sun way, she has a spark that lights her up from inside. Sam, lurks in the shadows, drawn to her. Poised on the brink of all things good in highschoolland, Heven collides with Sam's world and she's changed. Masquerade deals with the results.
Where there could be cliques; there isn't. There is just a beautiful story with enough romance and mystery, you must delve head first into it now!!!!
Here's the GR summary: "(I'm inserting....this is Heven's voice....)Before. (I'm inserting....this is Sam's voice....) Heven has no idea how closely death stalks her. If we are to overcome all odds, she must push past her flaws - her frailties - to become much more."
This was just amazing. It had my heart pounding! This has to be one of the best books Ive ever read. There is something so effortless and beautiful about the author Cambria Heberts writing that just captured me immediately. The characters were just so easy to fall in love with and the story line was completely enthralling. There are four pov's - Heven, Sam, The Hate and The Hope.

One night walking home from the library Heven was attacked by some sort of monster, that clawed her face, leaving her scared for life. She now hides under hoodies and shys away from everyone. Until Sam. He came to school and had every girl dropping at his feet. But there was only one girl he wanted. One girl that he has loved since the moment he saw her riding her horse through the woods. But Sam has a secret. Even though Sam has a beautiful heart and loves Heven with all of his being. He is not human. Sam is something so terrible that he feels if Heven ever found out, he would lose her forever.
Sam sweeps Heven off her feet. He loves her with such an unconditional, heart bursting type of love that Heven cant help but fall for Sam right back. He shows her how beautiful she really is. Sam doesnt see the scars. He only sees Heven. Sam is just totally amazing, and one of the most beautiful, characters I have ever read. Infact Sam broke my heart. How could someone so loving, so committed, so protective still feel like they are evil inside. He was just perfect in my eyes. Infact he reminded me of one icy winter Prince....Ash (Iron Fey)
There are sooooo many surprises in this book. There is a big one for Heven. Its also awesome when you finally find out what Sam is. There are so many gorgeous private moments in the book between Sam and Heven and it just had me swooning all the way through. The last few chapters of the book start to take on different and really exciting story which is making way for the next book. And I think its going to be freaking amazing!!!! Im so excited for it I may combust. I cant wait to read all about Sam and Heven's epic adventure. One of the things I did love most about this book was there was no love triangle. It was just Sam and Heven and their story. Seriously one of my most fav books ever!!!!
Overall, I really liked this book. From the first page, I was captured and enthralled by the words that leaped out of the page. I couldn’t help wanting to read it more and not wanting to do anything else. Heven and Sam’s relationship walked a tight rope, but ultimately I was convinced. The story is one of overcoming tragedy and the power of that story line is one many people need to learn or be reminded of. For the most part, I had nothing to say about this story at all.
All the characters were well developed and I enjoyed the relationship story lines with Kimber and Cole.
This story also had the added benefit of being about a paranormal entity I haven't read about. That added to the fantastic nature of this story.
I would recommend this to mature teens. The story line was mostly tame but there were a few minor parts that may not be appropriate for younger audiences. I’m excitedly looking forward to the next in the series. I will also look to read other works by this author.
It is hard to put into words what I feel about Masquerade. Although it is the same concept as most books that I've read and loved: Girl meets boy; girl and boy fall in love; their love is tested again and again by some supernatural force; Cambria Herbert's writing style and the new concepts she introduces took Masquerade to a whole different level. Not to mention, I think that Heven is one of my favorite heroins-- not because she is some bad-ass chick, but because she is a survivor who sees the good in people even when maybe she shouldn't.
With that said...
Heven's face is severly disfigured by scars she doesn't remember getting ten months prior. Once one of the most beautful and popular girls in her school, Heven now hides her scars from the world under baggy, hooded sweatshirts and doesn't talk to any of her friends except her two besties, Kimber and Cole. Worst, she is paranoid and feels like she is being watched constantly. She feels as if she will never feel safe and secure again... until she meets Sam. Sam is everything she ever could pray for and he sees past her scars to her very soul. He is perfect... or is he? Sam hides a secret that could not only tear them apart, but that could make Heven hate him forever.
Having heard some amazing reviews, I was quite excited to get this book through PNR/UF Fanatics' R2R program. I didn't know much about it before I began, having only read the synopsis and skimmed reviews. (I don't like accidentally reading spoilers.)
I'm sorry to say I was a little disappointed. Other than a few moments of excitement, a lot of the story was rather slow. The first half in particular was mainly Heven talking about how miserable her life is (which complaint, to be fair, was not without some truth to it), Sam mooning over Heven, and the random appearances of unknown characters, which were explained only much later. Building suspense is a little bit like building a tower of cards. If you do it right, it's really cool, but it's not easy and trying to draw it out for too long just makes it topple.
I was quite frustrated by the characters. They epitomized the qualities of YA leads that really bother me: from Heven, insecurity, clinginess, angst, superficiality; from Sam, overprotectiveness and possessiveness. Some of these attributes can be reasonable in small quantities, but when they make up a majority of a character's thoughts and behavior, it's gone too far. Sam's jealous reaction to Cole particularly bothered me, as did Heven's constant need to whine about something. I don't want to trivialize her injury, because of course it was terrible, but at the same time I would much rather read about how determined she is to deal with it or at least see some kind of change in her, but she seems quite willing to go straight back to her old life.
I'm not a fan of love at first sight in general because it tends to breed this kind of character development and because it often excludes other characters from the story when the main couple are so wrapped up in each other. In 99 percent of cases, the love-at-first-sight trope just seems fake because there's nothing between the characters to back it up.
On a more positive note, this was a very quick read and did capture my attention. I finished it in about a day, even though it was rather long (a little too long for this sort of story if you ask me, but that's not really the point). Masquerade's world is creative, containing a lot of religious elements without being preachy. I do wish there had been more explanation for some of the supernatural/divine aspects other than Sam's nature, because anyone, however benevolent, who claims to be following some sort of Divine Plan makes me nervous, but as that element was introduced later in the story I imagine there will be more in future books.
Even though I personally didn't like it, I think other people who like the things I mentioned in the review might enjoy it. It wasn't horribly written or anything, it just wasn't my kind of book. If you love all examples of YA PNR, this might be the book for you.
This book could not have been more perfect. Cambria Hebert hit the jackpot, she created an unforgettable, magical, insanely gripping and astoundingly beautiful story. Fast paced plot that drips with tension and thick, mysterious atmosphere. Richly developed, swoon-worthy characters that you'll instantly connect with. Totally unpredictable twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat non-stop. All that and so much more... this book will blow your mind!
They tried not to stare, but they couldn't keep their eyes away. I was a freak now. I made people uncomfortable and not necessarily because of my scars-but because what my scars represented. Danger, fear, and the unknown. Something had had happened to me, something not even I could remember. They all probably thought that I was crazy, that I somehow did this to myself. I couldn't blame them. ow could I? They might be right.
Heven used to be beautiful and very popular at school. A perfect teenage girl. She had it all: cheer squad membership, closet full of latest fashion items, a group of loyal followers and admirers, beaming confidence and charm - you name it. But all that was Before. Before the night of the accident, before her face was scarred and permanently disfigured, completely changing her life forever. She can't even remember what happened. Was she attacked? Was this an accident? A wild animal? Did she do it herself? It's a mystery. She's never been the same ever since. She's a freak now, everyone stares at her and whispers behind her back. She stopped caring about her wardrobe and make-up, trading her designer clothes for baggy t-shirt and hoodies that can at least partly hide her hideous face. All that's left from her "Before" life is the ever-supportive and loyal friend, Kimber, and Kimber's boyfriend, Cole. At least until a mysterious new guy shows up in town. Not to mention that he's insanely hot, steamy and gorgeous-looking (Awww, please, can I go for a Bubble-Tea with Sam?!). Heven is about to get into some serious trouble. She'll discover that what she thought to be her over-reactive imagination and silliness, was in truth her instinct trying to warn her about the evil thing lurking in the dark, observing her, waiting for the right moment to strike again. This time, though, it won't go for her face. This time it will go for the kill...
"I'll make sure she gets home safe." Sam husky voice made me shiver, and then he touched me. It was a simple, insignificant brush of his hand as he took the keys from my palm, but I would remember that one second contact with him like it was my first kiss. Every single nerve in my arm tingled, and my skin burned. Every coherent thought I might have had completely faded away. I stared at him, entranced by his hazel stare, caught by the golden highlights that sparked through his eyes "Uh..."
SWOON~! Noah Shaw, wherever you are, know that you have a formidable rival to the title of the 2011 Most Swoon-Worthy! *Deep sigh* ahhh, Sam! Where do I begin? He is so painfully hot! Mysterious, brave, tough, handsome (handsome?! he is drop-dead gorgeous!). He was so amazingly protective of Heven, so deeply in love with her and at the same time so.. wild and dangerous, and all sorts of wicked awesome! OMG! And for the most part of the book you don't even begin to suspect who (or what) he is, what's his reason for being there... Of course, me being a total sucker for mysterious, hot guys, I fell totally in love with Sam and got goose-bumps every time he worked his charms on Heven. Sparkles were flying, tension was overwhelming, and the chemistry between these two.. OMG! Dear Santa, can I have Sam wrapped (or not:P) and placed under my Christmas Tree? Please???
It was a clear night, and there were a million stars nestled in the sky, twinkling brightly alongside the moon. I was nearly home, my street just yards away. The night was quiet, exaggerating the sound my heels were making on the pavement. Usually, I liked the clicking sound, it made me feel womanly, and it announced my arrival. However, at this moment, it seemed I shouldn't announce my presence. I slowed slightly, gentling my steps and glanced to my right at a wooded, overgrown lot. I imagined something hiding in the bush, watching/ O laughed a little at my silliness, but quickened my pace. This time, allowing my heels to slap loudly on the pavement, hoping the sound would ward off any animals that might be around. Behind me I sensed movement and whirled around to confront it.
OK, that was more of an excerpt than a quote, I know, guilty as charged! But can you see how wonderfully descriptive and captivating Cambria's writing is? And that's just a quote from the first page! It only gets better as you read. It's definitely one of those books that you can easily devour in one sitting. Maybe not so much "can" but "have to", cause I bet you, you won't be able to put it down until you find out what's going on! From the very beginning there are many questions and mysteries, and very little answers. The title is so adequate! It's like a big masquerade, where nothing is what it seemed, there's a thick web of lies and pretending. You will be biting your nails and wrecking your brain, begging for some answers! So intense!
The road ahead holds many tests challenging everything she ever believed. I whispered a prayer for her inner strength to guide her on her path. She was going to need it.
Four words: Multiple Point of Views! Yeah, baby! So well done and thoroughly executed, with clear marks as to whose head you're poking around at the particular moment. I loved it. It was such a great idea, not only because it gave us precious insight about characters' thoughts and motivations, but also because it was convincing. Every character was different. You got the story from Heven's perspective (most of the time), but you also got it from Sam's. And then you also got the POVs of two, um.. creatures? The Hope and The Hate! How wicked cool is that?!
"I'm hideous" "You could never be hideous" "Forget it" I wanted this conversation over. "I can't forget it," Gran said, not giving up so easily. "I don't like to hear you talk about yourself that way. Your scars do not define you, young lady. Your action do."
I feel extremely grateful for this book. It's not only a wild thrill ride with a great, unique plot and sparkly characters, but also quite an eye-opener and profound life lesson. It's entertaining, but it also teaches you something about how the world works. How appearance is only that, an appearance. And everything that truly matters lies underneath. How easily is to forget that your face, clothes, hairstyle, and all those silly little things don't define you. How you can shape your life and change the way things are if only you give it a try. You choose who you are. No one else. It's a wonderful and deep story, and I am really glad I had the pleasure to read it.
Cambria Hebert is a super talented author and I'm 100% sure that she will shake up the YA world with her brilliance. Her writing is expressive, graceful and insanely pleasant to read. She's a born writer, a hidden gem among the Indies. Expect to hear a lot about her in the coming years!
Good god, how many of these sh!tty books are there? Where the plot is basically:
Teenaged Girl (with ridiculous name) + Internal DWAMA + Hot Abs that Just Moved to Town + High School DWAMA + Sassy Best Friend + Just Enough Paranormal to Get the Right Amazon Tags
Add in an LKH level of clothing descriptions, and I'm done. My life is too short to waste with this carbon copy schlock and no level of completism or bullying from fans is going to make me push myself to finish crap like this.
As a child... oh, who am I kidding? Even as an adult, my favorite fairy tale was/is “Beauty and the Beast.” I love that story so much, and I’ve often wondered why there weren’t more tales reminiscent of such a classic love story. Stories that capitalize on inner beauty and not the worn out, wearisome accounts of glamorous, perfect, unattainable lead characters. What if there was a modern day take on my favorite tale…. and even better…. What if the beauty bore the disfigurement instead of the beast? Masquerade Heven and Hell 1 is that book, complete with a uniquely refreshing, intriguing twist.
Heven is a teenage girl with a stunningly bright future. She’s beautiful, popular and on the cusp of becoming head cheerleader: A perfect life. Funny how perceived perfect lives never stay perfect. Following a long, studious essay-writing session after-hours at the public library, Heven is attacked on her way home. A brutal and mysterious attack that left her scarred. Masquerade is the story of a brave girl’s emotional journey to learning to love herself again and an amazing boy’s love for her - an amazing boy who has some pretty heavy secrets, I might add. Secrets that could bring Heven and Sam’s relationship to a crashing halt.
"I shouldn't feel safe. I never felt safe around anyone new, but his presence was like a blanket to my shivering insides, whatever he projected reached out and wrapped around me, keeping my fear at bay."
I think my favorite character in the story was Heven’s wise and loving grandmother. I never got the chance to know my grandparents, but from the way my grandmother has been described to me, she sounds a lot like Heven’s.
“You are far more than those scars, Heven.”
“Your scars do not define you, young lady. Your actions do.”
And it’s a good thing that Heven has her Grandmother, because her mother is, shall we say, less than supportive? Her answer to everything is Church, Bible study, chicken, and more Bible study. However, I believe there is much more to Heven’s mother than meets the eye, and I look forward to that revelation.
Sam was extremely appealing and quite fascinating. He made it his sole purpose to protect Heven - whatever the cost to him. His character and his back-story were heartbreaking. The way he ached over the attack and the blame he shouldered for what happened to Heven were incredibly sad. His love for Heven: Beautiful. He was willing to go to the ends of the earth and back for her. Never once, did he “see” her scars. He found her just as lovely with her scars, as he did the very first time he saw her.
“I felt as though an invisible tether reached out of me and went directly to her. It tugged at me as I stood there, begging me to close the distance, for just one chance to see her smile.”
“I let her presence fill up every hole inside me. And that first time I saw her smile I knew that I loved her.”
Through Sam’s kindness and love, Heven began to break out of her shell and overcome her reclusiveness.
“He said the words easily, as if they cost him nothing. Yet they were words that were more valuable to me than anything, and I was very afraid that they cost me my heart. His smile fell away and he grabbed me and began kissing me aggressively, almost like he was angry that I dared to make him feel that way. I answered his kiss with my own.”
Heven’s character really grew in this story. I was unsure about her timidness and withdrawal from the world at the beginning of the story, but watching her develop into a strong and confident young girl was immensely rewarding. Sam saves Heven in more ways than one, but I adore the fact that Heven saves Sam too. Sam needed Heven’s love every bit as much as she needed his.
"His eyes shone like the summer sun with a hint of surprise."
I really liked that Sam’s secret was NOT the secret I had initially guessed, which is what gave Masquerade its uniqueness and originality. Not to get too spoiler-y, but I have a lot of unanswered questions surrounding The Hope and The Hate, Heven’s mother, the gifts that were given to Heven, and also some lingering doubts about Heven’s best friend and her boyfriend. These are all things that will definitely make the reader anticipate what Cambria Hebert has in store for Sam and Heven in Charade Heven and Hell 2.
"I learned a long time ago a person's appearance is only a disguise for who they truly are."
A huge thank you to Cambria for sending me an ARC of Masquerade and for allowing me to read and review her work.

Before, the prequel of Masquerade had already tied me up in knots, and Masquerade didn't disappoint! Reading Masquerade was a walk down the memory lane, it has been too long since I read a story dedicated to only werewolves and shifters, and I didn't realize how much I missed it until Masquerade. And to say, Masquerade took the term Shifters to a whole new level! I never even thought that it was possible, so I have to award a good 10 points on the creativity and originality of the story. Read Masquerade, and you will understand what I mean (I don't want to give away any spoilers because it will spoil the fun, I had quite a jaw dropping moment when I discovered what sort of 'animal' Sam was.)
The story gripped me from page one, and I do mean it literally. Don't ever forget the beautiful cover as well! It was one of the reason why I adore this book so dearly.
Synopsis: Heven was scarred, and Sam blamed himself for being the one responsible to inflict such pain in her life. Because of that scar, Heven shunned herself thinking that she was imperfect. But when Sam entered her life, she slowly accepts the imperfections she has, and they fell in love with each other. Sam was always there, his love for her was constantly professed through words and actions, but Heven never said those words, eventhough the love she has for Sam was overwhelming. In this game of love, will their love survive the horrifying truth that Sam desperately tried to hide? Or will a crazy mom, a dangerous stalker and a strange new world be the one that take them down? (those were just the least of their problems.)
Having being attracted to Sam Before (and it only took me 19 pages), I was excited to read about a whole lot more of Sam in Masquerade, SAM WAS THE MAN! Sam has grown to be more than just a character in an amazing story, I was deeply compelled to reveal his secrets (like Heven) and it was a rush to do so (something I haven't felt in quite a while when reading a paranormal novel). In fact, Sam reminded me of Patch from Hush Hush, dark, mysterious, protective and capable of love. Every minute with Sam puts me on such high alert, maybe his intensity rubbed off on me too, the story was that vivid.
Another character I came to adore is Heven. Before, I never really get to know Heven besides Sam was infatuated with her, she has a vibrant, happy life and it all ended when she got the scar. But one of the best part of reading Masquerade was seeing Heven change, and what is the best way than reading it through her POV? Her character was such an interesting development I just can't bring myself to hate her. And come on, she has a devilishly sexy boyfriend, a bold best friend and an awesome Gran!
The entire story was blasts of different colours! From the subtle attraction between Sam and Heven, to them discovering their ferocious feelings, and having so many mishaps happening to them (including a party catastrophe and a nightmarish prom night), they kept me at the edge of my seat. But what awed me the most was the fighting scenes, it was so vivid it made the reading experience much more adrenaline junkie! And I was so glad that Heven was not this helpless protagonist, she actually does something to defend herself. (Note: Read the car accident and barn part towards the end of the story)
Despite how much Heven and Sam had occupied my thoughts, the addition of other characters also made Masquerade much more 'glittery'. I am fond of Cole and Kimber, I couldn't imagine a book without them, and most of all, I am in love with the badass monsters in the book (without them there wouldn't be any climax won't it?), and she has a name, China! And the brief appearance of Logan at the end of the book was a cliffhanger to the story. I was right to expect great things from Masqeurade, now.....
I absolutely adored Cambria's prequel to Masquerade, Before, (review can be found here: http://myguiltyobsession.blogspot.com... ) it left me in suspense over what would happen next and I just couldn't wait to find out all about Sam and the mystery of the Hate and Hope and even Heven, so I just knew I would really Masquerade and I wasn't wrong.
What I didn't know and wasn't expecting was just how much more I was going to fall in love with this series. And let me tell you, my expectations for this book were already high and yet, Cambria still managed to blow them out of the water with her beautiful writing, loveable characters, her creative and imaginative story line, the sweet forbidden romance and the mystery surrounding it all.
This book really is like no other. This series is like no other.
It is fun and so hard to put down. The characters feel real and you just completely fall in love with them. You get so caught up in the story that it is hard to put it down. In fact once I started it, I had to force myself to stop and do other things that needed to be done, like you know, eat and sleep.
I love that in this book we not only get Heven's point of view but also Sam's and then they mysterious names of Hate and Hope.
Heven is strong character that has been through so much already in her life, from being popular and beautiful to lonely and disfigured. She really is just lost trying to find her way in this new life that was created for her.
And then there is Sam. Sam stole my heart.
He is so wonderful. He is loving and devoted and strong and just wants to be good. He sees the best in Heven and is there for her no matter what. He constantly puts his life on the line for her and doesn't even think twice about it, in fact he would die for her.
He is the ultimate bad boy with a heart of pure gold.
There are so many twists and turns through this story that you can't help but be swept away with it. Cambris is a master at grabbing hold of your attention and refusing to let go. The world she created was captivating and I just was left wanting more and sad that it had ended.
I truly can not wait for the second book in the series and know that this will quickly become an all time favorite for anyone who tried it.
Cambria is a very talented writer that shows a lot of promise and I know that her writing will just keep getting better and better and I am so glad that I will be here reading it and watching her grow.
Masquerade is a YA Paranormal novel full of mystery, suspense and romance; it is what I would call a page turner as I found I couldn’t put the book down. This novel is written extremely well I loved how the author wrote the different points of views so we had a better understand of each character. Cambria words flowed so well you got caught up in the story like you were a part of it. I really enjoyed her writing style and will read anything she has written. Every story needs a little romance and Cambria writing made us fall in love with Sam and Heven.
Masquerade is about a young woman named Heven, one night on her way home she is attacked and left with a horrible scar on her left side of her face. She has no memory of what happened or who could of did this to her. She even began to wonder if she somehow did this to herself. Heven has withdrawn from her life hiding herself just as much as she hides the left side of her face. She wears baggy clothes, hooded sweatshirts, hoping never to draw attention to herself. Heven still lives in fear always looking in the shadows to see if anyone is there. Things are about to change for Heven when she sees the new boy walk in to her class. Here we meet Sam, her attraction to him is immediate and you can tell he feels the same. Heven doesn’t understand how he can look at her but Sam see’s past the scars and sees her inner beauty or so we think. As we get to know Sam better we see how loyal he is and he will do anything to protect Heven. But there are secrets and we know something else is going on and you begin to wonder who Sam is, and should Heven trust him to keep her safe?
This is a great novel, twist, turns some fantastic fight scenes you absolutely fall in love with Heven and Sam. There is so much more to this story all I can say is you have to read Masquerade. I cannot say enough about Cambria Herbert writing besides it is fantastic and I will buy anything she writes.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the paranormal genre.
Before by Cambria Herbert
I was given this short prequel and will say again that it is well written it made you want to start Masquerade as soon as you hit the last page. It was nice to get a glimpse of Heven’s life before Masquerade and finding out a bit about more about Sam. Fantastic read.
I would give this a 4.5/5. This book was pretty intense and amazing. Its hard to even believe how much happened. I cant believe it was only 360 pages. It felt like so much more! When I think back to how things were in the beginning of the book, when Heven was hiding behind her hair and her hood, and that first conversation she and Sam had in the school cafeteria, it feels like years ago.
At first, I was a little hesitant to accept Sam since he was totally stalking Heven for like a year, and that is totally creepy. But eventually I had to let it go and accept him, and even admit its part of what made the book so good. Sam was totally sweet and not dangerous. Realistically, psychologically, I dont know if it is possible for a stalker to not be dangerous, but this is a book, and a great one at that. Sam's utter love for Heven and need to protect and be near her was very consuming, not only for him but as a reader. And it just made me all the more happy to see them together, to know how much it meant to Sam, and to know how long he must have been dreaming of nothing else.
The first part of the book reminded me of Nevermore because of the high school setting, the sweet romance, and the subtle supernatural undertones. But once Heven found out what Sam was, things got more intense, with the story, the romance, and the supernatural elements. Without secrets between them it made their relationship so much more real. I was a little disappointed how Heven freaked out at first, but she forgave him fairly quickly. This was also around the same time she started living with her grandmother, which meant they had so much more time together, and they grew so much closer without the secrets or Heven's mother in the way. And they totally had a couple of hot make-out scenes that I was really hoping were gonna turn into something else, but they didnt have the opportunity in this book. But still, those scenes were hot and I am totally gonna reread them a bunch of times.
note: I was super surprised that I had won this book via a giveaway, because it was the first time I had won an ebook. Ever! The cover art is awesome!!! You should read this book! Go read it now (after you've read my review of course ;) )
the book: Heven's life changed. Before her life was normal. Now her face is scarred. She does not know how she got them. She does not know how to deal with the looks people give her. She changes and hides, always. But then she meets Sam. Immediately she falls in love. But her best friend is pretending to date with him. It seems as if the scars do not matter to him. It seems as if he loves her. Finally they get together. But how long will they have? Death is luring over their shoulders. Part by part Heven discovers what has given her the scars. But will she like what she finds out?
my review: Oh. My F*cking. Godd!!! This is an awesome debut novel! I seriously cannot wait to read Heven and Hell #2!! Heven is this character I did not like at the beginning. She seemed very unconfident of herself all the time, because of the scars. Hiding all the time is a bad thing. I like her best friend, Kimber because she did not care about the scars and behaved like a real friend. But I also hated her. Because she behaves like a selfish bitch all the time. The romance in this book was great. It was no love triangle, so that made it good. It was not twilight-ish. It was sometimes a little bit unrealistic, but I did not care c: This book is super creative, and you will love it! It kept on surprising me. And the cover made me want to read the book in the first place. Then I read the synopsis of the book and I wanted to read it more, and then I saw all the 4-and 5-star reviews and it became a must-read to me :) So I read it and boom! I have fallen in love with this book!!!
Before you read Masquerade, you need to read the short story prequel "Before" to see what Heven's life was like "Before." It is free for download from Smashwords and Amazon. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...
Masquerade is the story of Heven. Heven had the perfect life; she was pretty and popular, and everything was going her way. Then something happens, and her world is shattered. The Heven who once was is gone and what is left is a scared girl who is hiding from the world. She sees herself as a freak and lives an empty life.
Then Sam appears.
Sam comes into Heven’s life and changes everything for her. He makes her see that everything she thought was important is not. What Heven does not know is that Sam has been there all along, even Before. He has deep, dark secrets, the least of which is that he has been in love with Heven for a very long time.
I loved the characters in this story. They were very well written; you could not help but falling in love with them. It’s so easy to feel that you know them, and you hate to watch them go through their struggles, only being able to hope it will work out for them in the end.
I loved having the different points of view throughout the book. Seeing the story through both Heven’s and Sam’s eyes brought completely different perspectives to the story.
This story was well developed and easy to read. There were twists and turns to keep you want to keep reading and guessing. In fact, once I picked it up I did not want to stop reading! The world the author created in this book was fascinating, and I was left wanting more. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
Dnf @ 75% - I wasnt HATING it… it’s kinda nice to go back and read all the 2011 plot devices that are cliche now. I’m just bored. The hero has been vocally “in love” since the beginning of the book, but at 75% I’ve not really gotten a good explanation as to WHY…. I need some scaffolding in order to buy into this sort of dramatic soul-mate kinda of love…. I still have 25% left of this book and an entire other book to read. 😵💫 This probably could have used a brutal editor. There’s not enough plot here for 2 books. AND THAT’s FINE… if it had been in one book. 😬 Anyway, this is far too YA for me, with no heat or passion at all to speak of… lots of grand declarations but I need more. I did like how protective the hero is and that the heroine wasn’t some ridiculous badass… and I liked that she reacted in a relatable way to his secret…. But it’s not enough. Sadly.
This book was kind of strange to read. It started off slow and strong. Some people might dislike that slow progression in the beginning, but I feel Cambria used the time well to develop Heven. It created a three dimensional character with bits and pieces everyone could relate to. I was a bit iffy at the introduction of Sam because it got a bit lovey-dovey and the pace of the read started to quicken. I think it mellowed out and progressed well, adding drama and attraction where it was needed. So all in all a very strong beginning with very real elements that drew me in.
In the middle up to around a bit earlier than 3/4s of the way through, however was a different story. I almost mean that literally. The pace quickened, it seemed REALLY rushed with quite a few grammar errors, and there was such a heavy emphasis on the weakness/cowardice of Heven and an almost nauseating amount of that overwhelming, far too clingy type of teen love. Sam's character was strong and kept true to his own elements and characteristics, but Heven's character seemed to veer from afraid and cautious to I can't function at all because I am paralyzed by fear and need to be rescued. Also, and forgive me if I have this totally wrong, I felt that maybe Cambria was trying to get across how thankful Heven was to discover these positive social changes that happen to her, but it was again overwhelming and a bit too heavy on the emotional side of things. To me, it created a weak character. I felt for Heven and all and was happy when she was but it was also a bit too cheesy for me to want to keep reading. And, again, as to the love influence, I felt it was a little too heavy after only having dated him for a few weeks, it made the love and bond unbelievable and unreal.
But!!!! There is a major silver lining folks! The ending was WAY powerful! Personally I loved it. We encounter another shift. More serious and focus. It really showcased how efficient Sam and Heven were when they were together! The actions scenes were phenomenally developed, the imagery vivid, but not too wordy. The characters felt real then. There wasn't a huge emphasis on clingy teen love, Heven's paralysis faded away, Sam shows his other side cleanly and precisely. It was fantastic!
I give it three stars because it would have been great if the tone and style of the writing (emotional but not overkill and strong) from the beginning and the end had carried through the whole book. So my main complaints are that the tone sifted so dramatically at such crucial points in the book it took away some of its power, there wasn't a lot of breaks to signal a time lapse which left me feeling a bit lost and scrambling to figure out the when and where, Heven's character kind of forked and then came back which distracted from the book and that the tone in certain areas was a bit too emotional and cheesy that I actually skipped whole paragraphs to get back to the main plot. Started of slow and steady, finished strong. The middle was distracting but all in all after that part was over I was dying to read more. Can't wait for the sequel I just hope the characters and plot is a bit more steady and narrow. Unique idea, great sense of fitting characters, tantalizing writing style, nooooot executed too well. I will read the next one though!

“Before” by Cambria Hebert sets the stage for innocence to be devoured by evil, and it’s an entrancing prequel to her debut novel “Masquerade.” So-called normalcy is obliterated in Hebert’s tale...part fantasy, part horror, and completely irresistible! Heven and Sam are wonderful characters with big time, supernatural problems ignited from Hate, which actually helps tell the story. Hope gets to jump in from time to time, offering hints about what is to come, until it interferes...changing everything. “Masquerade” is a wild ride taking the reader through frightening twists and turns, both emotional and physical trauma are present. At long last, deep dark secrets are revealed that have the potential to...well, you’ll see!
Heven: Once beautiful, “Before,” she was attacked, this young lady has her hands full trying to cope with a scarred face that damaged not only her angelic looks, but also wreaked havoc upon her self-worth. “Masquerade” takes Heven to the pits of despair as she fights through her anguish, yet...it is her pain that makes her stronger, stronger than she ever thought possible. This is one of the many reasons this book is impressive. It is Heven’s inner strength that shines the most. I like that, a lot.
Sam: Ah...now, he’s a keeper. Gorgeous, with golden eyes that mesmerize Heven, he is fiercely protective, has amazing abilities, and he is his own worst enemy. Sam’s past could ruin his future with Heven, not to mention all of the other lives put at risk—still, he battles like a hero should. Independent, wise for his age, and determined to escape his past, Sam exists to be Heven’s guardian. Nothing on earth or in any realm as a matter of fact, could break Sam’s dedication to the lovely girl of his dreams. Tomorrow is more important than yesterday for Sam, and this is another reason I enjoyed “Masquerade.” This novel makes sure the characters have challenges, and they do feel terrible at times, but they strive to make their futures better.
“Masquerade” held my attention throughout, to the point I couldn’t read fast enough! Tempted...seriously nuts I became while trying to figure out “what” Sam is. What a surprise it was and worth waiting for! Disappointment only came when this story ended because I want to see where Hebert takes these memorable characters next.
This is an amazing and thought-provoking book. I've mentioned before that Hebert's style of writing takes you deep inside the story until you are touching, smelling and experiencing everything along with the characters. This is no less true for Masquerade than her other works. The author very successfully uses a continuously changing pov that allows the reader to see the inner thoughts of Heven, Sam and the mysterious Hate and Hope characters.

There are so many plot twists and mysteries in this book. You question what exactly Sam is; you think you figured it out; you then realize you were wrong. You ponder who the Hate and the Hope are; being this is a series, you don't get all of the answers regarding one of these characters, but you do get the satisfaction of knowing more about the other. So much happens in this book, it leaves your head spinning.
What I loved best about this book was how each character grew and developed throughout. I believe Heven's development to be the main theme of the book. You're sympathetic to Heven's pain and anxiety in the beginning and you cheer her on as she gets past some of that. You are indignant for her at points. You roll your eyes at her when she does something foolish, but it only makes her feel more real. By the end you are proud of her.
I do have a few complaints. Waiting for the final confrontation with the Hate drug on some. I was a bit disappointed how that conflict took place as the author has Heven put herself in a vulnerable situation yet again. Then after this conflict is resolved, so much more happens that the book doesn't really wind down to a conclusion as much as it just stops.
Even with my couple of concerns, the story is so incredibly good that I cannot give this book less than 5 stars. You simply MUST read this book!!!
