It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Sci-Fi romance. Linnea Sinclair used to be my “go to” author for everything Sci-Fi, but it’s been a few years since she’s published anything. I may have just found a new author to replace my Linnea Sinclair addiction. It’s Cathy Pegau, and her recent release, Caught in Amber is balls to the walls awesome. Cathy also writes Sci-Fi Lesbian Romance, which was her debut, Rulebreaker in 2011. Caught in Amber is and one of the best Sci-Fi Romances I’ve read in recent memory.

Caught in Amber takes place in the same word introduced in Rulebreaker (which I haven’t read and must rectify). We’re introduced to the heroine, Sasha, as she’s sitting at a bar having a drink. Sasha has been out on parole for eight months. She used to be in the Nevarro Correctional Rehabilitation Center where she spent the last five years as her punishment and recovery as an amber addict. Amber is a big illegal drug of choice on Nevarro, and her ex-lover, Guy Christiansen is the top dealer of it. Sasha’s more than happy to stay far, far away from Guy because she holds him responsible for her getting to the drug. But then Nathan Sterling forces his way into her life. Nathan needs Sasha’s help. It appears that most of the women Guy has been with after Sasha left him not only look much like her in appearance, but end up dead because of their addiction to amber. Nathan’s younger sister, Kylie works for Guy and he’s afraid Kylie will be another victim of Guy's. Nathan believes Guy is still in love with Sasha, and she can help save Kylie, but must approach Guy about a business deal with Nathan. Sasha is dead set against seeing Guy again but Nathan can reduce to terms of her parole and get rid of the chip in her neck that tracks her and controls her amber cravings. If she’s successful in helping Nathan, she can leave Navarro and her unfortunate past behind.

Sasha decides to help Nathan because she wants to get back at Guy for him throwing her away like garbage. But when she walks into the lion’s den, so to speak, she may have been incorrect in her assumption regarding Guy. At the time she went to rehab, she was heavily under the influence of amber, and what she vaguely remembers is different from what Guy tells her that happens. She sees with her own eyes that Guy does still care about her and knowing the only way she can get Guy to welcome Nathan into the business is to pretend she wants to rebuild their relationship. Guy is more than thrilled.

Nathan isn’t thrilled with Sasha’s act and is worried she could be in much more danger than he first thought. He no longer believes that Sasha is an end to a means and doesn’t want her hurt. At first he isn’t sure she can pull the ruse off, but she surprises himm but both must stay in their roles or suffer the consequences.

Not only is Sasha being forced back into the world that almost destroyed her, but now she has Nathan who not only can give her the freedom she longs for but the affection she so desperately needs.

Caught in Amber is everything I look for in a romance. The characters her are very dimensional and rich with their personalities. You really connect with Sasha and the grief she’s going through. Everything is well balanced with her from beginning to end.

Nathan comes across more as a typical hero you find in most romances. But who really shines here is Guy, the villain of the story. I really connected with him and I found myself sympathetic to how he was portrayed because it’s obvious how much he cares for Sasha, although he's this big drug lord who uses people to get what he wants. Part of me wanted to see flashbacks of them together, to get an idea of how Sasha ended up with him, how she became addicted to amber and how she became bitter and lonely.

I really can’t find anything wrong with Caught in Amber. Cathy hit a home run with this one. Her writing is engaging and grabs you from the first page. Also the love scenes sizzle and the chemistry and attraction between Sash and Nathan is very believable.

Caught in Amber is one book I’m recommending everyone read. This is a book I want to hug and I’m proud to say one I wouldn’t mind having babies with. Carina Press has a good thing with Cathy, and if Caught in Amber is proof of Cathy’s writing skills, I can see her taking the Sci-Fi genre by storm. Caught in Amber is one book I’m urging readers to grab ASAP. “It’s so good” is the mantra that kept running through my head as I read.

This book is awesome. This is probably the best adult sci-fi I've read since The Electric Church (Avery Cates, #1) by Jeff Somers

First we have. . .a bold heroine getting over a captivating drug called amber.

and also trying to stay away from the hot sexy drug dealer that got her hooked on the stuff to begin with.

Then another guy makes her an offer. One that will have the poor heroine not only around Amber, but around the sexy drug dealer. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that the other guy is a hottie too.

Put all of that together and you have one sexy book in the set back of great sci-fi world building.

The book won't win a Nebula, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat and heat up your core.

What I liked.
I loved the characters. Sasha, despite her dark past, is an immediately likeable and sympathetic character. Even after being broken and having to rebuild herself from the drug-addicted shambles she's become, she's strong, intelligent, and a warm human being who doesn't wallow in self pity but lives with her regrets. She had every reason to tell Nathan Sterling where to stick his request (and frankly I'm not sure what he was offering was good enough a prize), yet she knows what Nathan's sister is heading for and wants to help.
I liked the world building and the idea of Amber, but felt that it wasn't as in depth as I'd like. It was the character and plot that prompted the five star rating for me.

What I didn't like.
Nathan - despite his good intentions and desire to protect Sasha, I'd like to give him such a slap. He still put her in serious danger for his own ends, and ultimately I found that a little too selfish. I felt he used her, no matter how sorry he was about it and how he fretted over her. From a personal perspective, I really hate to be used. Guy - I've no doubt he was a bad man, but I found myself conflicted over him. He genuinely appeared to care for Sasha and *potential spoiler* dealt with the real creep of the piece, so I actually found it hard to hate or understand him.

In conclusion.
This reminded me of a Humphrey Bogart thriller/detective story but in a futuristic setting. Not something I'd normally go for, but the author won me over with Sasha and the lovely dark, slightly Bladerunner-esque feel. The tension was good, both romantic and plot-wise, and the one sex scene was done well. I'd like to have seen more on the world building side. If you like spy thrillers along the lines of James Bond in the future, this is for you.

This blurb came from the author’s website.

I was browsing Netgalley (I know this appears to be a common theme) looking for upcoming books when I ran across Caught in Amber I was already reading Rulebreaker, also by Pegau and set in the same world, so I took a look at the blurb. Everything about it just screamed my name so I went ahead and requested a copy. My advice is that you do not start reading this if you have anything you are supposed to do for the next several hours, including such things like sleep, eat, or go to work. After introducing the characters and the set-up, Pegau does not let up on the tension until the book ends.

Sasha was such a complex person. She was paying her dues for breaking the law and determined to do what she needed to live out the terms of her parole while she regained as much of a life as she could. Sasha went from the pretty girl next door to the mistress of a suspected drug kingpin, drug addict, and then ex-convict. Along the way her family decided that she had made her choices so they decided she was no longer part of the family. Sasha was strong enough to leave Guy but not strong enough to resist her amber addiction. She was caught shoplifting in an attempt to get enough money to pay for her next dose. As a result of stealing, when the reader meets Sasha all she had was a few acquaintances, her permanent convict chip and a weekly appointment at the parole office to ensure she stayed off of amber. Amber was the drug of choice for the mining colony and it seemed to possess a mixture of the effects of cocaine and methamphetamine. Its name was derived from the signature color.

Nathan wanted one thing and that was to rescue his sister, Kylie, from Guy’s clutches and her amber addiction. Privy to knowledge about Guy’s latest set of mistresses, none of whom were still living, and their physical similarities to Sasha, he deduced that Guy still had an obsession with Sasha that he could use to his advantage. Nathan didn’t want anything bad to happen to Sasha but he also was willing to do and promise whatever he had to gain Sasha’s assistance. I thought he was extremely callous but it was understandable. Heck, he even thought he should be ashamed of some of the things he promised. However, as the book continued and Nathan began to see Sasha as more than a tool his mindset changed. That resulted in my liking Nathan as the hero and not just as a protective older brother.

Pegau had my sympathies for Sasha from the very beginning. Even though she made a series of bad choices she had learned her lesson. Not to mention she developed an iron will and refused to get sucked back into Guy’s world. I was really worried about her as she spent more time dealing with Guy’s obsession and around the temptation of amber while juggling Nathan’s interest. I was continually amazed by her choices and her dedication to get Nathan’s sister out despite the danger to herself, and not just physically but mentally. In fact she was the one who kept Nathan from destroying their chances of success several times. Nathan took a while to grow on me. A few times he verged on TSTL actions brought about by the combination of his sense of protectiveness and guilt at bringing Sasha into the situation. Once Nathan’s viewpoint of Sasha changed, I totally fell for him. He played the criminal so well yet he also felt responsible for everyone. I enjoyed his interactions with his work partner, Natalia Hallowell, and Guy’s personal assistant, Genevieve Caine. He never once treated them like they were less than equals which I thought boded well for his continued relationship with Sasha. My heart completely melted as he honored his bargain with Sasha, gave her the freedom to do whatever she wanted and then asked if she would stay with him.

As I said in the beginning, Pegau continued to crank up the tension as the book progressed. Each time I thought I could take a breather, things got more exciting which increased my reading enjoyment. I really enjoyed the tension build up and how Sasha and Nathan got to know each other. I also liked the supporting characters such as Natalia and Genevieve who had so many layers hinted at but never revealed. Pegau also makes sure that the bad boys get their comeuppance one way or another. While Caught in Amber is the second book set in this particular world you do not have to read Rulebreaker first but it will introduce you to the world and its peculiarities. I enjoyed reading Caught in Amber and I am looking forward to Pegau’s next book.

I give Caught in Amber an A-

This is science fiction romance done just the way I like it: complex characters, high stakes, and a ‘happy ever after’ that never seems inevitable.

Nathan Sterling is one of the good guys: a law enforcement officer on a gritty, crime-ridden mining colony. So why is he trying to push a reformed drug addict into re-entering the world of amber, a highly addictive narcotic? Sasha James is a reformed drug addict, albeit with the help of an mandated implant that helps her resist the allure of amber. The last thing she needs is to re-enter the world of her former lover, drug kingpin Guy Christiansen. Nathan’s sister has become a member of Guy’s inner circle and he needs Sasha to get him entre into the closely-guarded world. He makes Sasha promises he may not be able to keep, ones that will enable her to get a fresh start. But will Sasha be able to stop herself from being caught in amber one again? Especially since Guy is still in love with her and wants her back.

This was a treat to read. The complex character motivations and their resulting actions kept me clicking ‘next page’ long after I should have gone to sleep. I love it when good guys do bad things for good reasons and when bad girls turn out to be better than they ever thought they could be. This is not a ‘nice’ romance, with characters full of honorable intentions committing acts of bravery. It’s, well, it’s complicated. The hero does questionable things. The heroine walks a precarious tightrope. Even the villain had my sympathy a couple of times. And there were lots of nicely-drawn minor characters adding to the problems of the main characters.

The story was taut and engrossing, with many moments where I was thinking “oh crap!” and “what are you going to do now, huh?” Yes, I tend to mentally talk back to the reading device when I’m caught up in amber, er, I mean a good story. I wasn’t quite ready for it to end. Nathan had made a few mealy-mouthed promises to Sasha at the beginning that he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to keep. I wouldn’t have minded if the delicious tension in the relationship had lasted to the final page, but those problems seemed to disperse without as much as a struggle as I would have wanted. I know, I know. I’m a glutton for the seemingly impossible happy ever after.

I received a complimentary copy from the author after many dropped hints, followed by an outright request, in return for an honest review. Cathy Pegau and I both write for Carina Press. My honest reaction is: highly recommended for fans of character-driven science fiction, more adventurous romance readers, and probably folks who are into suspenseful thrillers, too.

I enjoyed this readable page-turner so much I read it in one sitting over the weekend. I sympathized with Sasha and thought her struggle as a recovering drug addict was very well-realized. Sasha displays a huge amount of resolve and determination in dealing with the central conflict of the story (which I won’t give away), and I found myself admiring her grit a great deal as the story unfolded. Recovering addicts are not always the most sympathetic and likeable characters, but the author did a great job of portraying Sasha as a woman who has made the wrong choices in the past, and is living with the consequences as best she can.

I wasn’t as convinced by the love-triangle or love interest. I appreciate that Guy betrayed Sasha, but that she had absolutely no residual feelings for him (except repulsion) didn’t quite ring true. Despite the fact he’s a drug dealer, he doesn’t actually come across as that bad a fellow. Sasha didn’t seem conflicted about betraying him, which felt a little heartless. Nor was I wholly convinced by the attraction between Sasha and Nathan. Sasha’s uncertainty about why Nathan would want her as a recovering drug addict, on the other hand, was very realistic and made her highly sympathetic.

I liked the dark future setting, but would have liked it to be a little more fully realized. I didn’t have much of a sense of how (or even if) this future evolved from our present, and I would have liked at least a hint of that. I also felt there could have been more thought put into the small details of the setting. Sasha wears wool, for example, which struck me as odd, given the futuristic setting. Do they have sheep on this mining world? In a future where we’ve spread to other worlds, why haven’t we developed alternative materials?

These are small quibbles, however, in a book that I otherwise enjoyed a great deal. I’ll look forward to reading future releases by Cathy Pegau!

Review:

"Caught in Amber" by Cathy Pegau was a good 'Sci-Fi romance that I really enjoyed reading. I found this read somewhat sci-fi, urban fantasy romance really made a statement about dug addiction in general. This drug is called Amber, heroine or another other highly additive drug. From the read we find Sasha has been out of a correctional facility for eight months as a reformed addict. She has a chip in her neck for monitoring her and she wants to remain clean. Never wanting to see they guy that got her in all of this who was 'Guy.'

Nate Sterling who was a CIA agent, sister, Kylie is working for 'Guy' and is more likely involved with Amber as Sasha used to be and he wants her to introduce him to Guy as someone who has a business proposition hoping that he can get him into Guy's operation and get his sister out of this mess. Why would Nate want Sasha to do this for him? Does it have anything to do with the chip in her neck? Will Sasha help Nathan because she wants to get back a Guy for throwing her away like garbage? This is where I say you must pick up this excellent read to find out how this all comes out.

"Caught in Amber" was a good romance and the characters were all developed and colorful personalities. Sasha, Nathan and Guy really gives the reader a intriguing story from the beginning to the end.

If you are looking for a good sci-fi read with some romance you have come to the right place..."Caught in Amber" would be recommended to you.

The author kept me on the edge of my seat with action and danger at every turn. I worried, not only for Sasha's safety, but for the terrible risk that she could be caught by the drug that nearly ruined her once before. Her physical addiction might be curbed, but her psychological addiction still lurks. I could feel her fear and admire her courage as she takes ever more dangerous risks.

The author does a masterful job of portraying Nathan’s frustration over putting Sasha in danger and his fear that he won’t be able to keep her safe and allaying any worries I might have had that his actions made him less than heroic. I didn’t need to judge him harshly when he was doing that for himself.

The author also provided a deliciously creepy portrayal of the drug dealer villian of the story. Kind and solicitous of Sasha when she appears to be ready to return to him, we can easily see how the young Sasha could have been drawn in. He is just as convincingly dangerous, and when roused, his temper and violent behavior seem just as much a part of him and doubly terrifying.

If you’re looking for an addicting mix of romance, suspense, and action, in a science fiction setting; you should definitely get Caught in Amber.

Sasha just wants to go about her life, as mundane as it is, but when Nathan approaches her and asks for her help to save his little sister from Sasha's drug-dealer ex-boyfriend - she can't turn him down. To get back into Guy's good books, she has to play nice with him - which could hurt her and her probation status - all while resisting the call of Amber. Nathan and Sasha's growing feelings for each other could jeopardise the whole thing, if Guy suspects anything between the two of them - he could kill them both.

I always like books that make an entire new world, to someone like me (with little or no imagination) that seems like a herculean task so I admire that in an author. I liked Sasha - she was broken but determined to be strong and survive and that trait in her made me hate Nathan for forcing her into the situation above.

But, of course, Nathan manages to change my mind as we find out he actually has feelings for Sasha and isn't just in it for his sister's sake - he wants to help Sasha get on with her life.

Also, I hate Guy and Marco ... that's all I'm going to say on that.

Buy this book, it's a fun, quick read.

I'm going to put this on hold. It's just not working for me. There is no chemistry between the leads, the insta-intimacy and trust makes their relationship unbelievable, and I feel no connection to either one.

The writing style is also driving me a bit crazy. There is too much physical movement--every other sentence is "he raised his eyebrow", "she shivered", "she pressed her lips together", "she rubbed her hands together", "his jaw twitched"--it's too much. As a reader I do not need that much detail. Just give me enough to set the scene, and then let me fill in the blanks. Otherwise, I won't be able to become immersed in the story. Instead, it's keeping me at the surface and slowing down the pace. It's too bad because the world-building is excellent, and other than the excessive physical movements, and some repetition, the writing is good. The plot is a little weak, though; I do not feel the sense of urgency the Hero and heroine feel, and the Hero's plan is not well thought out.

I might pick this up again at a later date.

Part science-fiction, part romance, part suspense, this story is all good! Both Sasha and Nathan are complex characters with shades of gray in their moral fibers. Nathan's willingness to risk his job and use a civilian as bait played off well against a woman that wanted to put her past behind her and felt herself unworthy of a good man.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought both Nathan and Sasha were very likeable. I also liked them together. I liked how imperfect Sasha was and her determination to put it behind her (she is an ex-junkie). I think this book would appeal to anyone who likes a good romance with imperfect characters. The sci-fi elements are there, but don't overwhelm.

I kept trying to read this and wasn't sure if it was that I couldn't get invested in the book because of the book itself or if I just wasn't in the mood for something serious. Either way I finally decided to give up on this. It has an interesting premise but I couldn't make myself attempt to read it any more.

I give this about 3.5 Stars.

It was a fairly good story, however, it drug on in some parts and by 75% I kind of just wanted it to be over.

I did like how the main female character had a real internal struggle as well as normal reactions to the situations she was in. It was refreshing to see a character to do what she was told because it made sense, instead of being defiant for no reason at all. Again- she was a rational and fairly level headed; so kudos there. But... kind of predictable.

So 3.5-Crazy-Ex-Boyfriends-&-HEA-Stars

Random Side Note:
Funnily enough, I kept thinking in my mind, this could have easily been turned into a dark bdsm plot. OBVIOUSLY that was NOT what the Author was going for, but it was an amusing thought as I was reading this book. Maybe you will think so too? lol.

Reading like an exciting suspense romance, Caught in Amber is a wonderful science fiction tale that follows the story of Sasha James and Nathan Sterling. Sasha is a recovering drug-addict parolee who, five years ago was the girlfriend of Guy Christiansen, a wealthy drug supplier, and she was living the high-life and getting messed up. When she left/he kicked her out, she turned to crime to pay for her addiction to the drug called Amber. Now she lives a simple life under the thumb of the corrections system, staying clean and working hard.

Nathan Sterling is man of the law who needs and wants Sasha to lead him to the one person she can't ever see again, her ex. Guy has employed Nathan's little sister, Kylie, who is now wrapped up in the glamorous yet dangerous lifestyle. Although he doesn’t want to hurt Sasha, he will do anything, including using Sasha, to get close to Guy and get his sister out.

Although Caught in Amber is a sci-fi story--taking place on an unknown, futuristic planet--the story itself is not. The plot is well-written and could take place anywhere on Earth, yet the futuristic setting gives the story some advantages, such as advanced technology to help addicts. So don’t shy away because of the “sci-fi” label - it’s a great story that happens to be on another world with a few futuristic gadgets. The emphasis of the tale is on the characters and plot with the sci-fi pieces as the setting and props.

Nathan and Sasha have a slow brewing romance, but it is sexy, hot and passionate when they allow their true emotions to surface. At first, one may attribute their mutual attraction to the excitement of a dangerous situation, and I felt that Nathan was a little too emotional about and upset over his need to protect Sasha. I felt like the author hadn’t done enough work to establish a deep enough relationship to warrant the strength of his passion. However, as the story progressed, their lives become more intertwined and their mutual passion explodes. Although it is a slow-moving start to their relationship, by the time they do have sex, it is hot and explosive.

The term “caught in Amber” refers to the state of being high and/or addicted to Amber, a powerful, narcotic drug. I appreciate that although drug abuse and addiction is a difficult topic, it is given a seriousness that doesn’t overwhelm the reader, nor does it make light of the situation. Sasha is an extremely strong heroine who recognizes her mistakes and is working hard to right wrongs. This sense of morality serves her character well and helps drive the storyline. She is tough when need be, yet kind and tender. Put that together with a tough, protective hero and you have great chemistry.

One thing that I love about the book, is the author’s ability to set the stage and mood with simple, yet detailed phases and sentences. Ms. Pegau’s ability to describe the ordinary is a wonderful asset. Here are a couple of examples:

Outside, the sharp wind whistled through the trees and sent a cloud of dry, dusty snow across the parking lot.

Guy stood beside a metal desk near the door. His immaculate white shirt wasn’t tucked in and his charcoal trousers had a crisp crease down each leg.

The plot of the book is to rescue Kylie before it is too late. There is quite a bit of suspense wrapped up in this tale, keeping me gripping the edges of my Kindle until I was finished. The biggest two worries were: wondering if Guy would figure out that Nathan and Sasha are lying to him, and would Sasha fall into the temptation of Amber. Yet even within the main story are additional exciting subplots, which are woven around the entire tale. Ms. Pegau also creates a nice conflict with Guy, who is somewhat of a sympathetic bad guy. He comes across as a good boss and businessman, albeit a criminal. It appears that he genuinely cares about Sasha and her well-being, even though he abandoned her when she was at her lowest.

Overall Caught in Amber is an exciting and entertaining story. The romance is a bit slow at first, but heats up with passion as the story processes. The heart of the tale is a suspenseful ride, keeping my interest until the very end. The characters are well-written and generally likable. I am glad to see that two of the more interesting supporting players will be back for their own story in the subsequent novel. I recommend Caught in Amber to fans of romance - regardless of the science-fiction label.

Title:Caught in Amber
Author: Cathy Pegau
Publisher: Carina Press
Genre: Sci/fi fantasy romance

Caught in Amber is a sci/fi, urban fantasy style romance that makes a powerful statement about drug addiction and the drug trade in general. For me, this sets it apart from many others of the genre. It gives it a depth that is often lacking in popular fiction. At the same time, it has everything you would expect from the genre, passion, action, a courageous heroine, a gorgeous hero and a life or death climax.

If you're not into sci/ fi or fantasy don't let that put you off, because if you took away the high tech and the fact that the story is set on another planet in a future time this would be contemporary romance with a strong storyline.

The drug in question is called Amber, but it could be heroin, or any other highly addictive drug. Sasha is a reformed addict, eight months out of a correctional facility. She has a correctional services monitoring chip in her neck and has to report weekly for urine testing. The chip also has nano bots that help stop the craving for Amber. She's been doing well, not tempted by the dealers who hover outside the special correctional services units where she lives, and she is determined to remain clean. She's not proud of her past and never wants to see Guy again - the drug magnate she was in love with, and the one that got her addicted before he threw her out and never came to see her in prison.

Enter Nate Sterling, an agent of the equivalent of the CIA, but he's not on a department sanctioned job; he's on personal business. His sister, Kylie is working for Guy and likely caught in Amber as Sasha was. He wants her to introduce him to Guy as someone with a business proposition so he can get inside the operation and get his sister out. Why would Sasha go back and put herself in danger, not just from Guy's affections, but from the lure of Amber? The answer is that Nate can deactivate her chip and, for that, she's willing to risk it, because it means she can start afresh, a life without correctional services tracing her every move.

Of course, all does not go quite according to plan. Sasha was supposed to introduce them and then be done with it, but Guy is still in love with her and he's not going to work with Nate without Sasha there. As soon as she walks into the club he owns, she smells the Amber dust, sees the look on the faces of those using it and fights back memories of the embarrassing things she did to get enough Amber to feed her addiction. It takes a lot of strength for her to walk away. She wonders if she could have done it without the help of the chip that helps stop the cravings.

On top of that, Nate and Sasha have a tangible attraction to each other, something he fights because he doesn't want to jeopardise the operation, and she fights because she knows he will walk away as soon as he gets Kylie out. After all, what would a nice guy like him want with a girl liked her? Getting involved will only cause her pain, and Nate, being a really nice guy, doesn't want to take any more advantage of her than he's already doing.

Caught in Amber makes the consequences of the drug trade clear; it hurts people, big time, and is run by people who don't give a damn. All they want is money. The difference between Nate, a good old fashioned guy with manners who really does care about people, and Guy, who is only concerned for himself, couldn't be greater. All the money in the world couldn't make Guy as attractive as Nate.

This is the best kind of urban fantasy. I highly recommend it. 5 stars.
Heat rating - there's one hot scene, nicely written and not overdone.

There were so many good points about this novel that I find myself unsure of where to begin with the review. Caught In Amber is probably one of the best "introduction" novels for Science Fiction Romance that I have come across. It is a perfect bridge between Sci-Fi Suspense, Suspense (General) and Sci-Fi Romance. It has many elements that could fit into any setting; past, modern or future, and the world building elements are familiar enough that they would make even non-science fiction readers comfortable. It has just enough romance to make avid romance readers happy, but it isn't romance over-kill and so it should still appeal to general readers. It has a blend of suspense, action, great characters and a plot with twists and turns that will keep you guessing to the very last page.

This book earned 5 stars due to being phenomenally written in these categories:

1. World Building. Cathy easily creates a futurist world within the mind of the reader that has enough common elements so it isn't completely alien while still being unique enough to give it a live of its own. You get a strong sense of the environment of the planet, the political and culture of the inhabitants, the technology and the history without being drowned in details or long meandering explanations Cathy gives the reader enough credit to let their imagination do much of the leg work, using her expressed details to act as foundations. This is the hallmark of a great world builder.

2. Characters. The three main characters in this book are so three dimensional that you can easily see and connect to them and their stories. Sasha is a woman with a shaded past, caught up in drug addiction and hooking up with the wrong man. She is struggling to keep her head down, follow the rules of her parole and fighting against a strong sense of justice that calls for her to help out those who are caught up in the drug-world of her past. Nathan is a hero who admits to using Sasha as a means to an end until he realizes that his ending is incomplete without also being able to save her from Guy. Guy is a villain that you rarely come across - he is a villain that you find yourself liking and having sympathy for despite there being no question about his cruelty and the fact that he is a drug overlord. He is complex, conflicted and dangerously appealing.

3. Romance. There is no love at first sight or the female protagonist throwing herself into the arms of the male lead here. Normally, this means that there will be angst. Lots and lots of angst. Not in Caught In Amber. The romance in this book is mature, emotionally speaking. It is realistic and progresses at a pace that fits with the character's current states and their history.

4. The plot. This book has a great plot, full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing at every avenue. I was thrown for a loop a few times, expecting Cathy to go one way with the story only to have her go in a direction I never considered. It is a thrill ride from page one to the last page. Much of this has to do with Guy and his incredibly written character. I was never sure what he was going to do next or how he would react to something the other characters did or said. He was a complete surprise every time.

If you are new to Science Fiction or Science Fiction Romance, or if you haven't even gotten your feet wet, I highly recommend Caught In Amber as your first introduction to the genres.

I'm a little torn on this one. I enjoyed it but at the same time there were times I had to step away because I was getting a bit bored. I liked the main characters and the world but for some reason at times I got distracted.

Nathan is a good guy caught in a bad spot. His sister has come under the spell of a dangerous drug dealer and he needs help from an unlikely source to get her free. He's a very driven man who at times acts incredibly stupid. I wanted to slap him for some of his actions but he at the most basic level is a great, honorable man who you want to succeed. He's driven and yet when push comes to shove he realizes that he has something real with the woman who started as just a means to an end.

Sasha is an incredibly strong woman who made a mistake that she paid for and is still paying for. She fell in with the wrong man and ended up addicted to amber. She did time and in this world parolees have chips implanted that not only keep track of them but also have the ability to help control the cravings for amber. She's trying to get by and do the right thing but it isn't easy. When Nathan approaches to talk to her about helping him rescue his sister she initially turns him down and walks away. She's persuaded to help with getting the initial meet set up for him but ends up having to get in deeper and deeper to help pull the sister out of the lifestyle. I liked how she was so strong but at the same time so vulnerable. She craves real affection and attention which is part of what is so heartbreaking about her. She doesn't believe herself worthy of true affection and when Nathan actually shows it to her she tries to deny it is real. She pushes through everything to do what is right and I love that about her.

Give this a shot as the heroine alone is worth the read. I loved her and was very happy that she was so strong and worthy of what she gets.

Caught in Amber is set in the same universe as Rule Breaker. In fact there is a brief mention of Liv Braxton and Zia Talbot in this story. While Caught in Amber is listed as Science Fiction Romance, like Rule Breaker, you could easily move the location to the present day and have a contemporary romance. Having said that Caught in Amber is a strong story filled with very strong characters.

I wasn’t sure I liked Nathan Sterling through much of the story. He started out not caring about Sasha James as a person and the way he used her did not sit well with me. He did change his attitude as the story progressed but I still found him a little cold. Sasha on the other hand was a very strong character. I admired how she was working to change her life and keep off of the drug that had possessed her. She was the one with the most to lose if anything went wrong but she felt it was worth the risk.

Guy was a contradiction. He still wanted Sasha, in fact it was stated he loved her. However his love was more possession than love. He did make a very good villain. There were other side characters that added to the story. One of the side characters looked like she was being set up for her own story. Time will tell if I am right.

The story moved at a fast pace with an interesting plot. There was a lot of tension. Some between Nathan and Sasha, some brought on by the danger in the plot, and some because of other characters. There were enough twists and turns to keep me reading.

Cathy Pegau writes a very tight well-thought out story. I'll be looking for what she publishes in the future.

I really liked the world-building. But the characters just didn't do it for me.

The heroine is... fine. I wish she'd been a bit more of a bad ass, really. Not physically, just less of a 'good girl who made mistakes'. I wanted her to be a bad girl, and she wasn't.

But it was the male leads who drove me up the wall. Nathan's a supercilious ass. He pushes the heroine into a dangerous situation and then acts like an idiot when she's actually IN danger. To me, it came down to him not respecting her--instead of letting her do her job, he came rushing in and screwed everything up, and then acted like he was a hero for almost-sort-of helping to get them out of trouble. A beta hero is lovely, but not a beta who acts like an alpha whenever he's alone with the heroine.

And I really didn't see what was so terrible about Guy. I mean, he's a drug dealer. That's bad. But the heroine didn't seem to hate him for that, she seemed to hate him for something ELSE that he'd done to her, and I couldn't figure out what the hell that was. He tried to get her off the drug and she slept with his assistant in order to get more of the drug, and somehow that makes HIM an asshole? It didn't make sense. It felt like he was the bad guy because the plot needed a bad guy.

And I didn't think there was any chemistry between any of the characters.

So, yeah, two stars for a cool idea. But I didn't enjoy the story itself.

This is a fantastic sci-fi romance. One of my very favourites of all time.

Reformed drug addict Sasha is out of rehab and trying to get along on her own, and trying to stay clear of amber. After all, amber's what got her in trouble in the first place: living the high life (pun intended) with top drug dealer Guy Christiansen. Trouble is, staying clear is easier said than done. Agent Nathan Sterling (briefly seen in Pegau's previous work, Rulebreaker) needs Sasha's help. In exchange for releasing her from parole, deactivating the chip in her neck, and even helping her get offworld, he needs her to get him into Christiansen's circle to save his younger sister, now an amber addict.

From the first page, I was immediately captivated by Sasha, and stayed that way for the entire story. And from reading Rulebreaker, I'd been curious about Nathan Sterling, and for him to get his own book (so to speak), I could hardly wait to read.

Even if you're not a big fan of sci-fi, you really should read Caught in Amber. Pegau's world building is impressive, and I can promise you that you won't be able to put this book down.

Caught in Amber grabbed me and held me until the end. It's a sweet/sensual heat level. The characters are the most well-rounded that I've read in a long time. Every one of them has a good and a bad side, things that make you both like and not like them. I enjoyed the characters and their struggles, the detailed and interesting world, and the suspense aspect of the story. I usually get a feel right off for how stories will end, but not this one, well, not exactly. Knowing it's a Romance, you know how it will end to some degree.

The villain of the piece, the drug dealer, scared me more than the horrible creep (you'll know him when you see him) because he was charming...charming in the way serial killers are charming until the dice you to bits. He made my skin crawl so I could totally empathize with Sasha there. Her reactions were very realistic.

My favorite character was actually Caine, the right hand woman. I'd really love to read a spin-off starring her. She was great. Hey, Cathy, nudge nudge! Spin-off?

Altogether I really enjoyed this. And the cover rocks!

This was such a fun sci-fi romance! I've interacted with the author on Twitter several times, and she's absolutely delightful, so I was all the more pleased when I enjoyed her second book (the first is Rulebreaker) so much. Sasha is a fabulous heroine. I love that she's working so hard to get her life back on track after prison and an addiction to the drug Amber. I was a little worried after reading a few reviews of the book that I wouldn't like the hero, Nate, at first, because he is using her to rescue his sister from Sasha's former lover, a drug dealer. However, he is conflicted from the beginning about using Sasha when she's worked so hard, but he's desperate. I found their romance sexy as all get out, and I love that Nate has so much respect for all that Sasha's accomplished.

Really enjoyed this Sci-fi romance and I'd highly recommend this one to any lover of romance and sci-fi.

Stirling and Sasha

Read May 2014
I had this book on TBR for a while and was looking forward to finally getting around to reading if. It sounded interesting and I'm always looking for new to me sci-fi authors.

Well I must say I was hugely disappointed with this book. It was slow, a bit boring really.

I didn't feel the danger of Sasha going back in with drug dealing ex to help rescue Nathan's sister. I also felt there was also no chemistry between Sasha and Stirling. I didn't really warm up to Stirling at all. So really didn't care about them getting together.

I did like how Sasha had turned her life around. But overall didn't connect with any of the characters or this book ~~ ★★

This was a great read. Right from the start I was caught by the unique characters and setting. Sasha isn't your typical heroine, in fact, she's on parole and recovering from an addiction to Amber. She's determined to change her life, and stay away from Guy, the amber dealer who was the start of her problems. When Nathan Stirling turns up and asks for her help getting to guy, it's only the thought of helping his sister avoid her own fate that convinces her.

Not only are Sasha and Sterling original, but the protagonist, Guy, is full of surprises too.

The plot as full of unexpected twists, and I couldn't figure out how it was going to end until the last few pages. No cliches In this book.

A great read, will be looking for more books from this author.

Recovering amber addict, Sasha is broken but fighting to rebuild her life when the book opens. Unfortunately for her, hope of having a quiet life is shattered the moment Nathan Sterling comes into her life with an offer that she can’t refuse. Helping Nathan will bring her freedom but it brings her back in the clutches of her drug dealing ex-lover, Guy.

Sasha’s struggles with herself, the environment, her addiction, her growing attraction to Nathan and her fear of Guy are well written and the story is tightly crafted with a satisfying ending. I will definitely be looking for more from Cathy Pegau.

What a book! Apart from being interesting it is beautifully written. Not one sentence is out of place. The language used is so harmonious that you don't want to stop.
The story is told from the two points of view. Nathan's and Sasha's. It describes the future society on a different planet, where the only chance to get to the drug dealer is to go under cover. At first Nathan only wants his sister back and Sasha wants her freedom. To reach their goals they make a deal. As the story progresses, so develops their relationship. But will it lead to something more or will they be caught in Amber? Well, I am not telling;) Only the book will have the answer for you.
