Runaway Mortal

Rate this book
An ancient prophecy.

A high school full of angels and demons.

And the only suspect of a murder she didn’t commit.

That’s the trifecta that starts off Katerina Lyrille’s year.

After being on the run from the supernatural world for a month, Katerina finally allows herself to be dragged back to school when she discovers the only way to prove her innocence lies in a magical object hidden somewhere in the school.

But school is still the stereotypical, condescending place it’s always been. Being mortal—a human with advanced abilities—Katerina is at the very bottom of the social scale compared to the angels and demons, who are looking for any reason to find her guilty, leaving the job of proving she didn’t kill anyone even harder.

Her year is only made worse by the arrogant, yet sexy, supernatural agent hired to guard her. At first, he rubs her the wrong way, but as they spend more time together, she can’t deny he isn’t as aggravating as she thought he was, which is a lucky thing because Katerina is going to need all the help she can get. There is a darkness growing within the school, and someone is out to stop her at all costs.

Even if it means her death.

Runaway Mortal is out! Here is another list thingy for you.

'10 things you probably didn't need to know, but now know about Runaway Mortal'

1. I began writing 'Runaway Mortal' in February 2011. That's nearly two years!

2. I started writing 'Runaway Mortal' because I wanted to write a Young Adult novel about paranormal things.

3. It took me months and months before I came up with the title because I suck at coming up with titles.

4. I have a huge crush on a character in the book named Loire. Yes, he is the arrogant, yet sexy, supernatural agent. Yes, I did have to Google his name to figure out if I was pronouncing it right.

5. Katerina is badass. I heart her.

6. This story almost didn't happen. The first time was because I couldn't get into it. The second was because another book came out which was kind of similar and I nearly had a heart attack.

7. Katerina has two best friends, Anna and Misha. Anna is an angel and Misha is a demon.

8. I researched a lot of random things for this book, like a particular kind of hair.

9. I listened to 'E.T.' by Katy Perry A LOT while writing the book.

10. The series was initially going to be a trilogy, but now it will have four books in it.

Runaway Mortal is about girl called Katerina who is on a mission to prove her innocence (she is accused of killing her headmistress) and find the person responsible. She goes and visits a witch that tells her of a prophecy and tells her of the mortal blade that if found will help her find the true killer. all of this leads to Katerina heading back to school where the blade supposedly is. not just any school! a school for demons, Angels and a few select mortals.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! :D so much happens and the story and the characters are fantastic! I love the idea of Angels, demons and mortlas going to school together! and then you have the WHO DONE IT? thing going on and a little romance (by little I mean the sexual tension between two characters was AHHHH) XD and a bunch of other stuff (I don't want to give alot away!) and jsjejksjj *falls over* xD

I really can't wait for the next book! this story has so much potential it could become something awesome! IT WILL BECOME SOMETHING AWESOME! im so excited to see where this leads and what happens next!

2 stars because there was some sort of story, less 3 stars because it's pretty much a Vampire Academy copy, which was already done with a Half-blood covenant story.

Sometimes I wonder when these things happen whether the author doesn't do much reading themselves or expects the readers to not have read anything?

Hmmm, Runaway Mortals is like Vampire Academy meets Harry Potter in an Angel/Demon themed high school. Despite that being the easiest way for me to sum this book up, I actually liked it. It wasn't anything original, hence only 4 stars, but I did occasionally re-zone back into the real world and realise I was grinning like an idiot at Kat's situations.
There was enough of the dirty stuff for it to be interesting, but without any of the detail that makes any eye contact with the authors pictures in the back of the book feel awkward. So it was a nice blend.
This book starts off at what felt like the middle of Kat's story, which is nice, it skipped the whole initiating drama and hopped right into the action with 3 swoon worthy SRECON agents ;)
I enjoyed that, though, as the reader and outsider, you can see the budding, building tension between Loire and Kat, she just seems to be somewhat oblivious, which was a breath of fresh air from the self absorbed, over thinking, sex crazed, mopey teenagers we get in most books. I liked that she wasn't quite over her ex, she wasn't easy and she had loved, and that didn't all magically disappear and float away just because of a pair of pretty blue-grey eyes!
So the reason I chose Vampire Academy as a comparison is because Kat felt very similar to Rose, not just with the ninja like martial arts abilities, but because her breed was considered lower than the other two races at the school, her mother was a body guard/guardian for the Draco-somethings, which sounded to similar to Dragomir, aka, Vasilissa, whom I saw a lot of in Anna.
Not just that but this book, just like the first VA book, starts with our protagonist on the run, from her school, and is tracked down by a super skilled hottie (minus the exotic accent)
And Harry Potter because, well, protagonist on a quest with 2 best friends to acquire 3 items only ever mentioned in story books, it practically screamed deathly hallows, a rock, glass and a sword whose descriptions sounded similar to the stone, cape and a wand.
Howeverrrrr these similarities aside (because if you look close enough at any book, you will find comparisons with many others) this was a nice read, I liked the characters and plot, though the villain was not too surprising, not sure yet if I'll read the next one, but this one was good...and free on amazon prime! :D

I must say I was truly surprised at how much I enjoyed 'Runaway Mortal." It has a unique storyline with plenty of twists and turns as well as loads of action. Basically, it has all of the things I enjoy in a book.

Kat Lytrille is on the run from an elite school for demons, angels and mortals. She is accused of killing an instructor and is now being chased by an elite tracking squad. As she searches for a means to prove her innocence she discovers the key is connected to an ancient prophecy and in order to restore her good name she will need to return to the very place she has been running from.

Back at school, Kat must face the very person who could verify her innocence and whereabouts at the time of the murder, her cad of an ex -boyfriend. However, he does not want to admit to being with a mere mortal. Meanwhile, the elite triad assigned to guarding her consists of one sexy but annoying mortal by the name of Loire. There is plenty of snarky repartee and sexual tension between them.

Here is the thing, I would have given this book 5= Stars had it not been for the fact that Kat is a seventeen year old girl and Loire us a twenty one year old man. To write about them hooking up and having a sexual encounter is irresponsible. The author could have held off on them hooking up until Kat turn 18. In most states their relationship would be deemed statutory rape not love. I'm just saying this is not the message we should be sending YA readers.

Despite this, I did enjoy the read and look forward to the next book in this series.

This was a really good book. Estere Academy is a school that angels, demons, and mortals go to school together. The headmistress was killed and the only suspect is mortal Katerina Lyrille. Katerine ran away from the school, not because she is guilty but to prove her innocence. She finally finds the witch that she was looking for but now she has to go back to the school she ran away from to find something that will lead to the true murderer. The witch she met with gave her a prophecy that will lead her to the Mortal Sword. There are three objects that are supposed to make when put together make someone have all the power in the world. One is for a mortal, another for an angel, and finally the last for a demon. She's brought back to school by a SRECON (Supernatural Reconnaissance) Triad with one mortal, one angel, and one demon. The mortal, Loire, just comes off the wrong way at first but in time he seems to be a really great guy. Katerina's best friends are an angel named Annaliese but goes by Anna and a demon named Mishelin who goes by Misha.

This was a really great story that reminded me a little of the Convenant series by Jennifer Armentrout. But this book stood on its own. Definitely worth reading and I'm just going to have to wait for the next book in the series.

LOVE IT!

Katerina is a very passionate and a badass mortal!

I really liked the trifecta part (angel, demon and mortal) its a new spin to the paranormal World. And i like the fact that not all of those pesky angels are goody-goody :D And the demons are actually likable and funny.

I cant wait to see where the story is headed and im looking forward to adding the next book to the never ending to-be-read pile ;)

I started reading this book last night and didnt stop until I was done. I was laughing within the first few pages and then once I met the other characters and their attitudes I just couldnt stop myself and I had to find out how it ended! Katerina is such a typical snarky teenager but going through some things that a teenager shouldnt. Accused of killing her headmistress she is out to prove her innocence but has to deal with drama along the wsy.

Runaway Mortal is what I look for in a good Paranormal romance. Komal is a fabulous writer and I was entranced from page 1! It reminds me of Vampire Academy and my own Legend of the Archangel series. If you're looking for something to read after Vampire Academy that doesn't involve vampires, look no further than Runaway Mortal!

I've had the Vampire Academy books on my to read list for ages and then found myself watching the film (and obviously being really disappointed), this book reminded me of the VA but way better.

It was fast paced with some interesting characters although I was a little disappointed with the ending it just went a bit, flat.

Will definitely be watching out for book number 2!

Brilliant read.
Kat has hidden herself away from the supernatural world. She has a mission but when she finds a lead that leads her back to the supernatural academy. But this year becomes much harder when she is under guard and treated like a murderer, yet her excuse is kept secret by someone who values status over honesty.
Brilliant read.

Started off great, lost interest.

I was gripped by the beginning, the witty action and lingering mystery. You got a good idea of the heroine and I instantly admired her fearlessness and independence. She seemed to be a kick-ass one, which she was - for a little while.

I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the death (too bad there wasn't really much to it), I wasn't as interested in the unoriginal prophecy plot (which played out quite conveniently.)

It was interesting reading about angels, demons, and mortals (with abilities) going to the same school, though, I would've loved learning a little more about how that worked out - classes, rules, etc. Kat's friends and Veritas were also a decent part of the story.

I didn't feel the love interest. Except for physical attraction, there was absolutely no emotional chemistry. It was just: "you're hot, I think I want you." Or his stormy eyes did this, his stormy eyes did that. I found nothing captivating about him or his personality. If anything, I had a hard time liking the actual character at all for his incredibly cocky, overly confident, and superior ways.

The more Loire was around (pretty much the whole book), the more I was rolling my eyes or cringing at certain exchanges between him and Kat. However, my biggest problem was that Kat went from potentially kick-ass to being a real whiner when it came to him, and that was annoying and disappointing. The girl you meet in the beginning seemed to fade away overnight.

Also some things were so comically obvious that she didn't get and you had to go on reading about her eventually getting it, like

Barely halfway through I started skimming certain parts and eventually entire chapters, and ended up finishing the book on such a note. I will say I liked the ending.

The writing is okay and 'Runaway Mortal' is a decent book, it just wasn't great.

I can't praise this book enough! I loved this book so much! Can't wait until book two comes out in the middle of 2015 !! I started this book mon,oct,20th and finished this book yesterday A.M (saturday, 25th) This book is amazing its a supernatural book with mortals, angels, and demons. The main character is Katerina and her two best friends are Misha (demon), and Anna (angel). In the beginning of the book she is on the run trying to find answers . While she is close to find the contact, she meets Lorie (mortal) who is undercover with his srecon group. Who winds up being the main guy interest in this book..<3 The other two in his group is Tyrone (demon) , and Veritas (angel). Katerina looses the screcon group and finds the next contact who is supposed to answer her questions who happens to be a witch ! She finds her, but doesn't answer her questions regarding who killed the head mistress ( Katerina is a wanted suspect for who killed the head mistress, but isn't the one who killed her). The witch tells her of a prophesy about her and 3 objects.. She tells her she will find one object at a certain academy. She turns herself into the screcon agents and heads back to school. In order to keep an eye on her, the new head master ( Misha's uncle), assigns the 3 agents to take turns looking after Katerina. This leads to a stronger connection to her and Lorie, they share a bond that is undeniable.. This book is full of suspense, romance, supernatural drama, magic, and will keep you up thinking about what will happen next! Gah I can't wait until book 2!!! I will be counting down the months! I recommend this book to anyone who loves supernatural romances with magic and suspense . Its got a twist at the end and has a good lead up to book 2! ! Read it :)

Disappointed

I was really excited to read what looked like a different twist on the whole paranormal world that has captured our fantasy readers of the world's attention. However, there just seems to be TOO much going on from the very start and I for one can't make heads or tales of anything going on in the story.
for instance, who the heck is the heroine? is she good, bad, just a bystander in the way. for all of the authors "assurances" that Katerina is a badass kick butt and take names type, after six or seven chapters I am still left waiting to see anything resembling strength or just anything that could point out to me a reader who this person is I am supposed to be routing for, so to speak. While I can sort of pick out the underlying plot, the book is incredibly hard to follow and every word gives me a head ache as I try to make everything fit to make sense. there isn't any character development, there isn't any "show" of how awesome her so called skills are. and that little "sword" does nothing for the story, as far as I can tell.
All of that aside, I can see the possibilities in the story, and I can feel the authors excitement at putting their words together, I think I they took their time and organized better they would truly have an excellent book. I didn't hate the book, but I know I won't be finishing it as it is due to the afore mentioned reasons, good luck for your future writing.

3.5 stars

Katerina Lyrille is on the run to clear her name after being falsely accused of killing her headmistress. Learning that the key to her innocence is a mortal sword hidden somewhere back at school, she willingly returns.

Kat reunites with her friends to secretly search for the sword, which is proven difficult from the constant supervision of three guards; an angel, a demon and a mortal. Throw in a jerk of an ex, your entitled mean girl, a whole lot of sexual tension and a mystifying prophecy and you have yourself a juicy story.

Runaway Mortal was a very pleasant read and I absolutely adored the characters. Kat was a fearless, snarky and kick ass heroine whilst Loire was just downright sexy. But I also really enjoyed getting to know Anna, Misha, Veritas and Tyrone- especially Tyrone. My only disappointment and the reason the book didn’t receive a higher rating was that the story did fall flat in the end. I was waiting for the book to start escalating and for something major to happen but the story remained it's steady pace all the way to the last page. Other than that I did appreciate the take on demons/ angels/ mortals and am impatiently waiting for book 2.

In a word, this story was boring. The very beginning of the book was extremely promising. I loved the set up of the murder mystery, the main character, Kat, had brilliant whit, and it had promise of an excellent plot unfolding. But sadly the story just got bogged down in the quagmire of teenage boy/girl problems that took up 75% of the book causing me to basically skim through most of the book.

If you want to read this, I recommend reading the first 2 chapters, skip the middle, but read the last 3. Cause all the stuff in the middle was just... GAH! Also, just to add, the final fight scene was extremely anti-climatic, that it seems daft to even call it a final fight scene. Nothing even really happened! I don't want to go into detail in case you do intend to pick up a copy, but it's not worth it.

Similarities with other books:
Harry Potter
Vampire Academy
Half-blood

This book reminded me of Ondine and The Vampire Academy. At the beginning I really liked Kat, she was witty and sarcastic, which I really love to see in heroines. Her character however, lost a bit of substance as the book developed, she got more serious and lost some character.
I loved Loire's character, he was probably my favourite, he was strong and arrogant which made him fun to read. I also loved Tyrone, his one liners were awesome.
The plot was interesting but I think the person targeting Kat was very predictable and a bit anti-climactic. For me it was well written and interesting but it lacked a bit of depth, so I would give it 4 stars, it's not quite as good as Ondine and The vampire Academy, but if you like these stories, I would recommend it.

Very Action packed! If you loved Vampire Academy you will love this book! There are some similarity's but a whole lot of difference. The angels and demons are on the top of the hierarchy and the humans with special abilities are treated as pests. Kat is accused of murder so she runs away to find someone who is he hopes can help clear her name. Only to find out she has to go back to school. So many possibilities with this book. I can not wait for the next one. There is also a great book boyfriend. The way he comes across was so well written you just drool at the description! :)

Adding a review for this as I've rated it without a review.

A lot of things have happened since. 2014 Was a very hard year for myself so all the reviews are showing up on the same date. I can't explain why they are, if the ratings are justice or accurate I can also not say when I truly read these. I'm just going to say 2014 on the same day added just to keep the year right if not the month...

DNF. The whole point of the book is that Kat is supposed to be finding out who murdered the Headmaster of the school by fulfilling some supernatural prophecy, and to do so she needs to find some magical weapon thing. Except the only thing she's concerned with is going to parties and drooling over her angel baby sitter. No thanks.
