Elizabeth finds solace and companionship by sharing her Victorian home with Angus, a benevolent hundred-year-old ghost. A stranger, Duncan, seeks her out, claiming to be searching for the apparition who murdered his wife. Duncan, with the aid of gruesome photos and Angus’s diary, makes Elizabeth suspect she may be living with an evil presence. Angus, a nebulous force, finds he must now make himself known in more substantial ways as he tries to convince Elizabeth Duncan is lying. He twists her compassion and friendship into a sexual love that threatens to turn into obsession. Duncan also seeks Elizabeth’s heart and uses every sensual skill at his mortal disposal to steal her love and loyalty, and persuade her to allow an exorcism that would vanquish Angus. Elizabeth finds herself spinning into a vortex of love and lust, lies and deceit. She desires them both, even though Duncan may not be the man he claims to be, and Angus may be a spiritual serial murderer. Elizabeth is unwilling to give up either, until a shocking discovery forces her to choose between them.
I read it before, and just re-read it. I have been talking about it for days, so it must have gotten to me. Disturbing and suspenseful. Very dark with a twisted ending. A really good Gothic, ghost story that kept me reading until I finished it. More emotional than frightening, although there were some scary scenes. I did love it. Elizabeth seemed to be so shattered she couldn't protect herself from Angus or Duncan, both extremely strong characters. While the ending actually shocked me. I found I wished it had ended differently, but thinking about the alternative, I am not sure that would be a good thing. I liked the interjection of historical facts that played a part in a contemporary story. I like this author a lot. Everything I have read of hers has been entertaining.
Loved this story about a woman who inherits a house complete with a charming, or not so charming ghost with whom she falls in love. All is perfect in their relationship until a stranger comes to town and turns her bliss into horror. This one kept me guessing. None of the characters were who I thought they were. The ending was a shock, and leaves me questioning if another book may be on the way. Love the style of writing. I could see and feel everything thanks to the author's amazing voice. Good work. Highly recommend.
When I started the book, at first it seemed more romantic comedy with ghostly undertones. It would have made a enjoyable story. Then it tuned moody and the characters waffled between likable and then thoroughly nasty. Are we supposed to like them, fall in love with Angus, feel threatened by Duncan or is it the other way around. While I understood the author was building suspense which is a good thing- each character needed to pick a side and stay there. How can we like Angus when he has that almost abusive side and punishes Elizabeth? The history was muddied jumping from the 1500's to the 1850's and was not seamless. While the author has a deft hand with descriptions that made me want more, her characters were not developed enough and left me feeling it was not enough. A potentially great idea with beautiful prose that needed its plot to be thought out more.
ok, so I purchased this book by accident thinking I was buying a Sandra Browne book, didn't notice the Rarey on the end :) however I was pleasantly surprised! I ended up liking it so much that I purchased more of her stuff and I highly recommend her though she doesn't even write in the genre I prefer it was a nice change of pace for a crime thriller reader and writer such as myself.
