Playing catch-up is frustrating. Paul Cronin was the last crew member to join Flight 511, and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. To make matters worse, his predecessor Marlin had a “unique” way of looking at things. Dealing with the effects of the turbulence phenomenon is bad enough. Now Paul needs to figure out which of Marlin’s notes are vital clues, and which are the ramblings of an off-kilter egomaniac.
Paul finds a throwaway line in Marlin’s notebook that may be the key to unraveling the mystery. Time is of the essence, since every night he puzzles through the phenomenon in empty Bermuda is another night the uncensored side of his personality is spending with Dallas.
Author and artist Jordan Castillo Price writes paranormal sci-fi thrillers colored by her time in the Midwest, from inner city Chicago, to various cities across southern Wisconsin. She’s settled in a 1910 Cape Cod near Lake Michigan with tons of character and a plethora of bizarre spiders. Any disembodied noises, she’s decided, will be blamed on the ice maker.
Jordan is best known as the author of the PsyCop series, an unfolding tale of paranormal mystery and suspense starring Victor Bayne, a gay medium who's plagued by ghostly visitations.
3.5 This is the first time after his suicide in the first scene that we have Merlin’s point of view (that is not an extract from his notes). Every past event here is Merlin’s. He even influences the present. When Paul isn’t thinking of Dallas, he is almost obsessed with Merlin’s notes.
In the present, Dallas is stuck with guarding his crew members’ autopilots. Not that he minds. After they ‘come back’, Paul continues to study Marlin’s notebook. He seems to be a bit obsessed with skin colour.
The plot is definitely moving forward a bit faster than before.
On a side note: I'm really loving how JCP is weaving the relationship between Dallas & Paul. It's tentative, but steamy...and being an interracial couple has not been swept under the rug. Every now and then one of the characters will mention something that makes you remember that they don't come from the same backgrounds, aren't in the same socioeconomic group, don't have the same life experiences and as such come at the relationship in different ways, with different worries (and expectations). Excellent job JCP!
I didn't think knowing what Marlin did or found out about their situation would matter. I'm so glad his perspective joined the story though. It answers some questions but adds some more. This chapter gave me a tiny glimpse as to where this might be going. I won't say what I think is happening, I'm probably all wrong lol, but I can't wait to see if I'm on the right path. I do have questions about Marlin's death though. Hopefully that will be answered at some point.
YAY!!!! The romance between Paul and Dallas has begun and it was super sexy. I couldn't help but think about how weird it must be for Dallas having to deal with Autopilot Paul and Regular Paul but from what I can see he's great at it.

Black Box is the 5th book in this fascinating and edgy series, Turbulence. We get to know more of Marlin, who was the First Officer that Paul replaced. Marlin's history is important because he left behind a journal that could be the key to what occurs during Flight 511's trips into the Bermuda Triangle. Paul noticed that several pages have been torn out and are crucial to unlocking this mystery. #Autopilot. 5 stars!
as i start this review, I know for sure: I'm gonna reread this one when number 6 gets released. No doubt, this one will peel layer after layer, right up to the 4th re-read (or so)
a brilliant story in many ways: Marlin's metafysical interest and he turns out to be quite the Yedi, with all the lines he's feeding us! each one a bit more of a blast: 'ever since the turbulence, it seemed there was an epiphany around every corner'.
the flashbacks/the present all skillfully intertwined, what a great read!
This serial just gets stranger and stranger. This black box Paul is searching for should have all the answers to the questions they have. Or at least that is Paul's hope.
While I can't tell if I really like this serial or not, I can say that Ms. Price is definitely intriguing me and making me want to know what happens next. This is a 2.5 star. It's more than okay but not sure if I enjoy it. It's so bizarre. Still, she writes well. No grammar or spelling issues and the story flows, if cut off.
This particular episode is mystery-heavy. We get more time with Marlin, and more of Paul trying to connect the dots.
I like Dallas more and more with each episode. He can read Paul so well, which is something Paul needs. That, and having Dallas use that ability to bolster Paul and the idea of their burgeoning relationship. Of which I want more!
Where are the maybe possibly missing pages from the notebook? How does Ralph tie in? And Dallas is way too smart to be the one looking after autopilot Paul and Kaye. Once again, he had the best last line.
This was one of my least favorites of the series because it focused on Marlin who I really don't like much and had way to much flashback. As always throughout this series, the relationship between Dallas and Paul is wonderful, although it's all instalove. Price keeps my frustrated because this pair still .
3.5 stars. I’m not crazy about rating these installments individually. As a whole, this story is between 4 and 5 stars (depending on how it ends), but this episode was not as strong as the others. We learn more about the mysterious Marlin, and Paul and Dallas define their relationship a bit more clearly. I can’t wait to see what happens next, though.
Loved the moments between Dallas and Paul, but I'm not quite so much interested in Marlin's story, which played a bigger part in this one. Still, another great installment that has me looking forward to more!
The black box mystery alone would get 5 stars.. Having Marlin in the story rates 5 stars.. THe confusion for me gets 2 stars. and Paul and Dallas not having quality alone time gets 2 stars too.. Also it felt way too short this time around.. Even still can't wait for next one!!!

Maybe 2.5. I get the need for all the technical parts of this installment, but overall just so so for me. I do want to know the cause of the turbulence so I'm sticking with this series.
