This is my go to Advent reflection; I may dip in and out of others but Ann Voskamp's The Greatest Gift is always the default in the background, reminding me of the wonder of the season and how to celebrate the true Christmas amongst all the modern frills and trappings, how to peel away the glitter and bows and find the Christmas that will fill you up and sustain you through the coming year.
To quote Ann :
"Christmas can only be found. Christmas cannot be bought. Christmas cannot be created. Christmas cannot be made by hand, lit up, set out, dreamed up. Christmas can only be found."
This is the tenth year I have followed this reflection, in fact I have had to buy a second book to have the space for my response to the prompts (and have a third one waiting in my book case). One can go to the Author's website and print off quote cards and images for each day, also tree decorations if you wish, and these hang in our house on a golden ribbon, strung along a beam in the dining room - the ribbon filling up through December.
Having this book as my companion through Advent has become a tradition for me, one that keeps me grounded and, in the main, immune from the panic and stress and business that today's world would want me to feel about this time of year.
I can't recommend it enough.
