'Undone' Odette, Elle & me

A funny, sexy, sad, insightful story about the search for identity, the search for happiness.
Who am I?
Odette wants to understand her extreme behavior.
She wants to find the 'secret' to happiness.
She wants to find the meaning of true love.
She's not giving up until she does.

Odette swings between extremes, if she’s not giving all her possessions to the poor, she’s working in a brothel. She's either a good mother, or an absent mother.
When she hits rock bottom Odette parks a one thousand dollar caravan on the banks of a river and sits there. She’s not moving until she understands her own behavior, and finds the mystery she’s been seeking.
Odette finds the 'secret', she finds what she's looking for.

I live in Brisbane. Most recently, I have taught in the language department at CQ University, and in China.

I have a B.A. Dip Counselling & Psychotherapy, Dip ESL TESOL IELTS and Remedial Therapies - none of which helped in my search for identity - except to provide important discipline.
Life matters and the 'school of hard knocks' gave me a phd, not the worldly qualifications I gleaned on my way down.

I have been busy lately, getting the 'I' voice out. Stories told in 'Undone' and 'Unsung', currently unpublished.

My first novel will be published soon.
'Brides of War'
An historical, family saga about the three generations, two World Wars, the Cold War, and the wars that wage within.

Wow....this book took me on a journey with Odette as I wondered where she would end up. The insights are profound and the journey well worth taking as Odette navigates her way through a sometimes treacherous world where the people we all hope we can trust sometimes let us down in the most heartbreaking ways. Do yourself a favour and read this book - it simply tells what is a complex and ultimately redemptive story.

I won this book in a GR giveaway. This has not impacted on my ability to review it honestly and critically.

3/1 - I'm finding this quite compelling, but I really don't like the main character Odette, or indeed any of the characters. I find most of her choices incomprehenisble and that they go against not only what I would do if I was in those situations, but what I believe in. She seems to make the same mistakes over and over up until the point where she goes off the rails a bit and leaves her husband of many years. I know that she is a woman of a different era, but not that different, the same era as my parents. There are a few editing issues that have been over looked - missing punctuation, unnecessary words, partly nonsensical sentences, that kind of thing - it's not too distracting from the reading but it is noticeable. To be continued...

4/1 - After finishing this last night I had a look at what the author says about herself on her profile page and now I am of the opinion that this is a semi, if not fully, autobiographical story. I am an absolute atheist and I found Odette's constant reliance on a revolving bookshelf of quasi-religious self-help books foolish. Why does she need a book by a swami to tell her what to do or how to think? That seems just as much of an addiction as Odette's admitted addiction to prostitution. I do not like the idea of a reliance on a higher power that may or may not do what you need it to do, may not answer your prayers no matter how hard you pray. How do you deal with the higher power not answering your prayers? In my opinion it's easier not to believe in something like that than to have total faith and rely on it only to have your prayers ignored when you need them answered the most.

What a great little ditty. The impish young Odette takes you in the 1st person from an adventurous, privileged and somewhat challenging childhood. Through a very confused youth, a "happy" though fulfilling early marriage with six kids, while remaining an immature and frustrated teenager, in soul if not in years. Brilliantly written -from the heart. Witty, exciting and sexy I couldn't put it down. Wow is this Australia's 12 shades? Humour, more sex and a great sadness that smoulders under her almost flippant life journey though prostitution; takes the reader on a tumultuous ride to the caravan, and the "search" for Odette's true being. How much did her old RC conduit to her saviour and "their rules" influence her path?
As I read; Marie Clairs' word pictures, play out in my head, exciting me and my mind. What a terrific movie this would make! Bawdy too!

Great Read. I transitioned with Odette from 'young to old, good to bold'. The stories through each phase are authentic and told from the heart and you are right there to witness her insights. Equally her confusion and earnestness to find her way bounces off the pages and leaves you imploring she'll find what she ultimately seeks.... the freedom to be and love herself unconditionally- Lessons for us all. Well done Odette.

This book wasn't at all what I thought it would be about from the title. I really loved the way the book portrayed it through the characters eyes. Especially from a child's point of view. I couldn't wait to see what happened and to see what the character would do. What path they would travel. What people she would encounter and how she interacted with them.

Thank you to Goodreads Giveaways for the opportunity to win a copy of my own. Now I can read it again and again.
