High School Hangover

Rate this book
HIGH SCHOOL HANGOVER-a hilarious Young Adult romance from Stephanie Hale-author of REVENGE OF THE HOMECOMING QUEEN.

Laney Wentworth survived four years of high school unscathed. How hard can one party be?

Laney Wentworth’s graduation should be the best day of her life, but between a classmate mooning the crowd during her valedictorian speech, and her mother forcing her to attend the craziest graduation party ever, it’s a disaster.

To hide her awkwardness at the party, Laney drowns herself in punch. The punch makes her brave and she starts having fun. The guy she’s been crushing on for two years wants her by his side the whole night. Everything seems great until she realizes that the punch she’s been gulping all night is really an energy drink and it starts making her feel weird.

She wakes up twelve hours later dressed in strange clothes, two states away from home, with the boy responsible for the only B of her high school career, and absolutely no memory of how she got there.

With no money, the only way back home is to hitch a ride with a busload of rowdy senior citizens. On the crazy ride home, Laney learns that sometimes the most important things in life can’t be learned from a book.

"I’m about to hyperventilate when I hear honking and see the bus come tearing up the driveway. Two wrinkly butts are pressed against the back windows. My brain can barely process that I’m actually being mooned by a couple of geezers."

I wanted so badly to like this book.

So freaking bad.

But the world was totally against me. The book was totally against me.

Why? Because it honestly felt like parts of it were completely missing. Like paragraphs, pages, lines that were just non-existently there. They were supposed to be there, (I don't know what they would've said but I know the writing would have been great because what WAS there was actually hilarious) but they weren't.

The beginning felt kinda flat. As in a lot of it didn't exactly need to be there. Which is basically most of the party. I mean I get that setting the whole rest of the book up had to be done, but because I already knew everything that happened at the party it was kind of annoying how Laney couldn't remember any of it right off the bat. Especially what an asshat Leo was. She was so devoted to the utter asshat that I really wanted to throttle her. Especially since it was all because of energy drinks.

But then things started to pick up. I mean, meeting all the seniors and Laney and Jack hitching a ride with them was actually so funny. The characters were really jumping off the pages for me, I felt they could be real people. I loved every single character, even Laney when she annoyed me. She was like that little sister of yours that you can't help but love. Jack was cute, not swoon-worthy, but cute. And I hope I have as much spunk as Ginger and Trudy if I get to live that long, along with Archie's humour, Milly's body, Kris' kindness and Bernie's lovable dependancy on Laney.

And the overall plot was there. It was just missing pieces. People talk about plot holes all the time, but this book really had them. Big huge gaping holes that had information and lines that I really wished I could have read.

It reminded me of From What I Remember... because of the obvious parallels but it was unique in it's own right - what with the seniors, and the mystery of Laney's father along with Jack's dad's sudden business flump. Except all of these subplots were so choppy and numerous that it all became too much. Things ended way too neatly because they seemed kind of half-assed in the grand scheme of things.

Which is really just so upsetting because this book had so much potential. If it was lengthened to contain more writing in general, with less complex subplots and glaring plotholes it could've been a great read. And don't get me wrong, it may seem like I'm ripping this book an new one but I'm really not. The plot that was there was great. Dialogue was tight, characters were solid individuals, the humour was just that, humourous. It just got to the point where all the inconsistencies became too much. And it's really a shame.

But I still have faith in you Stephanie Hale. I'm gonna dip my feet in one of your other reads and hope you redeem yourself. Wish me luck.

And I'll leave with quote that had me laughing for a good solid 5 minutes and has me wishing I can eat my words when I read another Stephanie Hale novel:

“Why are you staring at my boobs? My face is up here,” Trudy exclaims.

Jack, the hotel employees, and I jump back like we’ve been electrocuted while the seniors don’t skip a beat. No. She. Didn’t. These geriatric devils are so bad.

“Ma’am, I assure you, I’m not,” the manager insists, but even as he says it his eyes automatically drift and his face gets splotchy.

“See, you’re doing it again,” Trudy tricks him.

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Ginger cries, appalled.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve, Mister,” Kris booms.

The rest of us are too busy trying not to laugh at Trudy’s scheme to say a word.

“I don’t think I want to stay here after all. They’re nothing but a bunch of perverts,” Trudy yells, attracting the attention of some people browsing travel brochures in the lobby.

“I’m so terribly sorry for the misunderstanding,” the hotel manager says, throwing hotel card keys in Trudy’s direction so that he doesn’t have to touch her and risk being called a pervert again.

“Please accept these complimentary rooms as our sincere apology.”

3.5 stars!

What an adorable book! I can’t even begin to explain how much I love The-Hangover type of books. When I was younger my favorite book of all time was this novel I found on my mom’s forbidden Harlequin box, about a girl that was saving her bff’s butt by getting his fiancé so drunk they ended up in Vegas, married and with no memory. I know, I know, not the kind of read a 12-year-old should have in her hands but I never followed the rules in what books concerned.

So it wasn’t actually that surprising that I ended up really enjoying this one. Laney was the valedictorian of her class and after her speech fiasco she decides to live a little and go to a party. You can guess things don’t turn out awesome for Laney but they definitely turned out funny for me.

I loved Laney, she’s a bit like me, except I don’t have her high IQ so I actually have to study. I get her excessive worrying about school and her compulsive studying, sometimes I don’t want to leave my house either but she just proved me that when you let yourself go you might end up having an amazing time.

Jack was another amazing cookie. I figured him out from page one but I was still delighted to hear his confessions towards the end. And seriously, who can not-love a guy named Jack? It’s practically a crime!

Now, in all through the chaos and the haze, Jack and Rose Laney end up hitching a ride from a bunch of senior citizens. People, you don’t know this about me but I love old people. I am even considering specializing in Geriatrics; I just can’t resist their charms. And I didn’t resist the charms of J&L’s travel companions, they were just the cutest bunch of funny lunatics, I loved every one of them, even Milly aka the GILF (that means what you think it means).

Yes, the story was a bit predictable, yes some things were unrealistic, and yes, the cover is kind of a turn-off; but I loved every minute I spend reading this book and the smile didn’t left my face way after I finished it.

This book is what would happen if The Hangover and Betty White's show had a baby. Totally awesome, totally cute and perfect.

Laney is a straight-A's brainiac. She dresses like a shlumph, never drinks or parties and is way more concerned with her grades than her social life. Except for Leo, the guy who has been her stiffest competition for top of class for as long as she can remember, and who Laney has a massive crush on. After her mom kicks her out on graduation night (and weekend) to go have some fun for once, Laney winds up at a party and hilarity ensues.

Next thing she knows, Laney;'s in the back of a truck with Jack, the guy who is responsible for her getting the first (and only) B of her entire life, with no memories of the party, no money, a ball gown (and no undies) for clothes and a big problem: she's two whole states away from home!

Will Laney pull it together long enough to figure out how to get home before her face is featured on the sides of milk cartons? And what's up with Jake being so nice to her all of the sudden?

This book was masterfully written, with edge-of-the-seat action on every page. Hale produces some seriously engaging characters and manages to round off a non-generic YA rom-com to the tenth degree!

If you dislike unbelievable plot lines and twists, skip this one. If you can suspend disbelief sometimes for the sake of laughter, this is a funny little book. Short, fast (rushed, really), and amusing. Reads true to premis. Language and sexual innuendo are mild and mostly from the mouths of some funny senior citizens. Having lived in both Hot Springs, AR, and Memphis, TN, I don't believe that the author has ever been to the hot springs -- they are accessed through baths, not actual springs as described, and I think she was referring to Orange Mound, a rather notorious part of Memphis, but the description didn't ring true. Seriously, if this sheltered white girl went there, she would have been a little more shocked/scared than she was at a party, and she would have been pretty nervously commenting to everyone in the van. Her foray there really had the potential to add a lot of funny to the story, so I was disappointed. I know every time I accidentally drove through that area, my huge husband acted like a nervous wreck.

The premise of this book was good, but the execution of it was not. The main female character was judgemental, obnoxious, looked down on everyone etc. I hated the main character in this book. The hero was great, caring, protective etc. and was a decent guy. Not one thing about the heroine convinced me she was actually lovable - seemed unbelievable that she was supposed to be some kind of genius and was too stupid to see what was going on around her. And I could find no real redeeming qualities in the Heroine to make the Hero actually like her let alone fall in love with her. Also the bus trip with the seniors which should have been longer and more life affirming/changing was glossed over and unexciting. There was no real depth to this short story. thought it would get better as it went on, but it never did. If it had been longer than it was I would have quit reading it.

I really identified with the main character Laney as spending my time at parties was never my idea of fun due to extreme shyness however I think that is what made Laney's journey so funny! There were of course some serious undertones with Laney being thrown into the back of a moving van unconscious after a bad reaction to an energy drink with the very good lesson that sometimes you can't trust someone just because you know their name, or have a crush on them. Of course things work out in the end with quite an adventure in store for our heroine along with her learning that sometimes it is just best to go with the flow as you simply can't plan for everything.

This could have been a great book if the main character would have kept her mouth shut for the whole book. Laney was such a dense whine bitch I wanted to slap and shake her from the beginning till the end off the book. Jack was a real nice guy and had a lot of respect for him for staying with Laney. I would have dumped her ass a long time ago and find a nice girl. The way Laney talked about her dad was like a 12 year old. She was not brave or loyal.
If you want to read a great book you should read : From what I remember.

I absolutely loved this book!! Everyone experiences a crush at some point in their high school life, that wild party, and finding out things about themselves they would only dream of. It may not all happen like it happened to Laney but it happens. I wish it would have told what happened to Leo's family.

4 stars! Cute and funny book. I think the party scene was way too long (and why so much nudity at the party) it would have worked to have them wake up in the truck then have flashbacks of the party as she got her memory back would of added a little mystery. But overall I enjoyed the book. Also the cover is misleading.

The heroine is a total brat, but redeems herself by the end. The hero is an adorable cutie pie, and the author gives me a happily-ever-after. I can't ask for much more.

Oh, I hope I'm an awesome 'ol geezer like the Primrose folks. So hilarious and supremely cute.

Dumb. Really just dumb. The only thing that kept me reading was because I loooove the old folks. The main characters lacked personality. Very dry. Was soooo odd.

Do much fun into to the old ppl but blank on the two main ppl
