My Rating:
3.5 stars. Seriously, when will Goodreads introduce half-stars? I really need one for this story, because I can't decide whether to give three or four stars.
My Review:
N.R. Walker's short story "His Grandfather's Watch" is a sweet, little tale about two guys falling in love while reliving the story of another couple, separated only by their different generations. In contrast to many other M/M stories trying to create romance out of dramatic/tragic situations or basing it on specific uncommon circumstances, this one focuses on a deep understanding of humanity and compassion between men, leading to a strong concept of love.
The story wasn't without some flaws, neither plot-wise nor regarding the author's writing style. The plot was very thin as a result of the undramatic origin (which was no problem for me at all, since it made up for a quick, fast-paced and fairly uncomplicated read). Unfortunately, N.R. Walker shifted tenses several times where they should not have been shifted, and the third-person narrator reciting the events which have already been discussed in the longer part of the story from the protagonist Alex's perspective felt irritating and even unnecessary after the ending of the contemporary part. I would have been content with the story focussing on Alex and Callum by allowing them to detect more and more about Callum's grandfather's love life rather than doing this and then additionally delving deeper into the grandfather's story by adding his perspective.
Conclusion:
It's a very well-written story (and a freebie, not to forget!) based on chemistry between the two protagonists and funny scenes rather than huge drama, but no light read either due to some important issues N.R. Walker is dealing with secondarily in this story.
