Brute

Rate this book
Brute leads a lonely life in a world where magic is commonplace. He is seven and a half feet of ugly, and of disreputable descent. No one, including Brute, expects him to be more than a laborer. But heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and when he is maimed while rescuing a prince, Brute’s life changes abruptly. He is summoned to serve at the palace in Tellomer as a guard for a single prisoner. It sounds easy but turns out to be the challenge of his life.

Rumors say the prisoner, Gray Leynham, is a witch and a traitor. What is certain is that he has spent years in blind, chained, and rendered nearly mute by an extreme stutter. And he dreams of people’s deaths—dreams that come true.

As Brute becomes accustomed to palace life and gets to know Gray, he discovers his own worth, first as a friend and a man and then as a lover. But Brute also learns heroes sometimes face difficult choices and that doing what is right can bring danger of its own.

4 stars for the book, 5 stars for the narration, 4.5 stars overall! This was an excellent listen!

Just from those first moments of the audiobook sample, I knew it would be a hit for me. K.C. Kelly did a gorgeous job narrating Love, Like Water, so I had the utmost confidence that he would kill this one. And he did. With a rumbling bass for Brute and a perfect stutter for Gray, the narrator nailed it.

I happen to have a tender spot for stutterers, so listening to K.C. Kelly narrate Gray had me almost in tears. I come from a long line of stutterers. My father, brother, and grandma all stutter, but my brother's stutter is by far the most pronounced, affecting his daily life. Listening to Gray try to get out his words really moved me, and the narrator did a perfect job getting that intonation down-pat. I think K.C. Kelly might be known for this because he is also the narrator of Ethan, Who Loved Carter, which also features a stutterer.

I also sussed out the narrator's home country from the way he gives many of his characters a New Zealand accent (I'm not that good, I knew it was Australian-ish sounding and then I looked it up!). I loved the range of accents and voices from Mr. Kelly. He did such a fabulous job giving this story character and body.

The story itself was also incredibly lovely. Brute is a tall, ugly, kind-hearted man who has been mistreated since childhood, and Gray is a prisoner, a condemned witch and traitor. The way they are thrown together and the way the romance develops slowly over time was really well done. I love slow burn romances, and this story really allowed things to happen organically between Brute and Gray.

Beware readers, this is a VERY angsty read. Brute was knocked down time and time again, and it was painful at times to read about the gentle giant being abused. Also, Gray's story is one that will break your heart. This story is also very light on the sex content, so strictly erotic romance readers, be forewarned.

My only complaint is that, at times, the story's pace dragged a little. There were many quiet, slow moments where nothing in particular happened, and I found myself growing a tad impatient in the middle of the book. However, the magic, the romance, the beautiful and careful way that the story was written, all make up for any faults. This was a book that will stay with me for some time.

You’re a giant because an ordinary man’s body is too
small for what you are.”
(Chapter 15, excerpt belongs to author)

Sometimes a powerful book comes without having to shout its existence, without having to offer actions and fireworks, without having to throw the characters to emotional or physical obstacles. Sometimes a powerful book comes with a quiet sigh, compelling tale, and unforgettable characters. This is what "Brute" means to me...

Brute was simply one of the gentlest character I encountered this year. He wasn't handsome, he wasn't smart, his father was a thief (who was hang for his sin), his mother was a whore (who committed suicide after the death of his father). His use was his tall-size and strength, and that was how he did for a living. Until he saved a prince, and got maimed in result. With only one hand, Brute accepted the job to be a guard for a prisoner at Brown Tower.

But Brute's power wasn't just lied on his strength. Brute's power came from far within -- the core of his heart. He was kind and caring. He saw the prisoner for more than what others saw (a witch, a traitor). He befriended the prisoner, Gray. He gave his food, he cleaned Gray, he soothed Gray when the prisoner had bad dreams. And with his blindness, Gray could also 'see' Brute past his look. They fell in love and they found the strength needed to get their freedom and forgiveness.

I can't tell you how many times I got choked up with this beauty of a tale. The characters were vivid, the 'medieval world build' was wonderful, and the story, oh, the story, it was exquisite. This is the kind of tale that I can imagine to be a fairy tale for kids as well (just erase the sexual content, which is not plenty to begin with), because it's basically a story about kindness, about bravery, about seeing others past their physical appearance, about love, and how heroes come in shapes and sizes...

It touched me deep and it stayed with me, even after I got to the very end. If I had any complain, it would be that I wished it didn't end soon. I wasn't ready to part ways with these characters.

Story that lingers; well, isn't that just the greatest of them all?

This is definitely one of my favorites in 2012. Kim Fielding has established her position as one of my favorite (relatively new) authors (I first read her April 2012). With this, I declare that I'm her fan...

Audiobook and Story - 4.5 stars

This one broke my tiny peanut heart. Brute! Gaaaaah! Gray! Gaaah!

The story was heartbreaking, beautiful, sweet and amazing. The narrator did a good job evoking emotions. Gray's stuttering got to me big time.

Highly recommended, if you are in the mood for some heartbreaking fairy tales.

Kim Fielding never disappoints. She paints fantasy worlds that we can dip into and believe.

Brute was at once heartbreaking and sweet. I loved the idea of two lost souls finding each other.

I do wish we had seen more of the passion between them, but there was more than enough tenderness to make me believe in the love between Aric and Gray.

If this has been lingering on your shelf, read it. You won't regret it.

Lost. It happens to the best of us. My husband goodheartedly claims I am navigationally challenged, and I can’t deny it. This is one of the rare times that I was delighted to have lost my way. I couldn’t escape this book. I was pulled back in again and again, completely content to stay. It was the writing, the characters, the story and the narration. I didn’t just love it, I was addicted.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to K.C. Kelly before…you must.

If you enjoy fairytales and haven’t read this book…you must.

If you’ve previously met Arik and Gray in print but have yet to listen…you must.

Now that my demands are out of the way, please allow me to gush.

One of my all-time favorite movies is Robin Hood. I adore the medieval setting but more importantly, I love the unbridled love they share. The romance that evolves between Arik and Gray is one and the same. Brute or as we later learn, Arik, happens to be the most compassionate character I’ve ever met. He was orphaned as a young boy then abused and ridiculed once he became a man. He is a giant and scorned for his physical appearance. His life has been tragically disheartening but he refuses to give up. He has one asset, his strength. If he is to be a laborer, he is going to be the best laborer he can be.

When a Prince visits his small village and has the misfortune of falling over a cliff, Brute doesn’t hesitate to rescue him. In doing so, he is severely injured and loses his hand. This ignites a chain reaction that will forever change his life. He accepts an invitation to the palace and consequently, a new job. He is entrusted with a prisoner and his duties are relatively simple. However the man he is guarding is anything but. Gray is believed to have a gift from the gods and has been convicted of being a traitor. Though he is blind, he has visions that come to him during slumber, glimpses of the future. Sadly, his dreadful dreams possess great power and his freedom holds too high a price. But iron chains can’t stop love and true love is the ultimate key.

What's to like: To start with, the writing is superb. I was instantly captivated and intrigued with this magical world. The pace was slow and steady. Gray is barely living when Brute takes over his charge. He has suffered greatly but in his mind, it will never be enough. When a stranger shows him a single act of kindness, he suddenly finds himself starving for more. Brute changes his inhalations from those of obligation to desire. With Brute in his life, he wants to live again. How can you not like that?

What's to love: I can be an emotional reader but it’s infrequent that a story brings more than a tear or two to my eyes. This story? I sat on an airplane with tears streaming down my face. I was almost to the hiccuping state before I remembered where I was, and then brushed off the concerned stares and closed my eyes and drifted away once more. I was blissfully lost with Arik and Gray. Everything else faded and I was right…there. Now that’s a powerful tale. *crush alert* I love Arik. I love how Arik loves Gray. He is a man with almost nothing yet he would willingly sacrifice everything, including his last breath for his beloved. And though it seems impossible, Gray’s love is just as fierce. Now that’s powerful love. Narration that made my heart break, race and melt. Voices so distinct and fitting that I can’t imagine it told any other way. Yeah, that’s a powerful audiobook.

Beware of: Abuse, torment and raw pain. This is the real deal feels my friends. But it is worth it….gods, is it ever. Gray has a stutter and it can be frustrating at times. This only magnified his maddening frustrations and intensified the awe-striking narration. And it was a teeny bit slow in the middle but honestly, I didn’t mind, as I said, I never wanted to leave.

This book is for: Everyone. If I had my way, everyone would hear this story. Then it may be possible for me to recruit enough forces, rally the readers to beg for more. A snippet, a morsel or even a dream….of what the future delivered.

"It's always good to have a giant or two looking after you."

Words so true, especially if that giant is Brute aka Aric aka the current tugger on my heartstrings.

How to describe Kim Fielding's "Brute"? It's a sort of fantasy featuring a gentle giant among men, Aric/ Brute. He's seven and half feet tall, ostracized, abused (emotionally and physically), scarred and never knew any kindness. His father was a thief, his mother took the easy way out and left poor young Aric on his own in a cruel world.

Add in an unexplained mega growth spurt, being bullied and told how "ugly" he is, assumed to be stupid, Aric didn't have many options to believe in himself. With all the hurt heaped upon him, he is so kind, so thoughtful and unassuming.

One day he helps a young prince and saves his life. At what cost? Losing his left hand. But he gains so much more, a new position in the palace as a guard for a single, chained prisoner Gray - an accused witch who has been imprisoned for over 12 years (WTF)! When we learn of the crime he committed, it boggled my mind.

Aric can't help being who he is and it shines through and attracts the young, blind prisoner. I get where some readers wondered if Gray wasn't blind, would he have really chosen Aric? Their story was meant to be told this way so I can't question.

I do wish we had more sexy times or at least described instead of glossed over for a number of parts. Aric is BIG all over. So much so the whores Brute pays for charge him double and usually have to take off the rest of the day to recuperate...so I'd have love Aric and Gray's first time with more detail. Just saying.

The story lasts for over a year or so and for the most part, paced fairly well. There's some dragging here and there but the story is entertaining and emotional.

Did I weep? No. But I did have to stop a time or two to whimper for Brute. He's so good and a pure soul. You can't help but root for him. And Gray too.

There's a HEA that was well earned, Brute and Gray learn about themselves and discover depths they did not know they had.

So...

Emotionally Invested = Me

Right up in my feels, I tell you. I recommend highly. 4.5 STARS

Now I need to read some action or violence or BDSM and get those feels right out of here... :P

*4.35* This story made me FEEL. It’s not overly wordy or angsty, it’s a simple fairytale of a larger than normal man (Over 7 feet tall, and 300 lbs) and a prisoner he is paid to watch over.

“Don't you d-dare say you're ugly or stupid or worthless. Don't you dare! Y-you’re a giant because an ordinary man’s body is t-too small for what you are.”

Medieval time period
Hurt/comfort
Extremely gentle giant
Found family
Slow, genuine romance
Amazing character arcs
Minimal sexual descriptions
HEA

An odd feeling gathered in his chest, and after a bit of examination he realized it was pride. Here he was, an ignorant, mutilated monster, but he could read. It was as if the entire rest of the world had a wonderful secret that had finally been shared with him.

Gray and Aric’s relationship is very beautiful. Their slowly blossoming friendship, those deep conversations, and the gentle lullabies that Aric sings to comfort Gray at night are so touching.

*Crabby that the beautiful second edition cover for this book is not on GR.

Wanna know what I love?

I love Brute.

I love the gentle giant with the HUGE capacity to care for others.
I love the simple man who's been forced to survive a hard and lonely life but doesn't let that impact how he treats people.
I love the strong and brave man that does everything he can to save his love.
I love Aric.

"Brute" is set in mythical/fantasy times in lands unknown...and is about a 7.5 ft tall man named Aric with a heart of gold, a prince who shows him appreciation and generosity, a blind witch held as a prisoner with magical powers of Sight, and love...beautiful, sacrificial, do-whatever-I-can-for-you love.

From the very first pages, all I wanted was to wrap my arms around Brute and protect him from those who'd want to treat him badly. And by the end, all I wanted was to wrap my arms around Aric and tell him how proud I am of for his bravery and his heart and what a good, good man he is.

So enjoyable. Highly recommended...

What a gem
Very heartfelt story about inner beauty, humility, kindness, sacrifice, consequences
Beauty and the beast re-telling
Fairytale feel to it.
Gray, beautiful, blind with a stutter and in prisoned due to youthful mistakes of large consequences.
Aric, gentle giant, bullied, shunned and loveless.
Two man who haven't felt affection or love for most of their lives.
Two man shunned by society.
Two man who judge each other on who they are rather than how they're perceived by society.

Aric is definitely the star of this story. A man who had nothing, who gained so much and sacrificed it all in the name of love.

Really lovely. Beautiful message.
Highly recommend to the few left who haven't read this!

4 Stars!

Gentle (or not so gentle) giants is a top favorite trope, and this really embodies it to the max!

As per the blurb, Brute has had it rough and lonely, and the pain and longing he suffers for no reason other than being different is terribly heartbreaking. Despite the cruel treatment by everyone he knows, Brute remains a steadfast honorable guy who does the right thing every single time with never any ulterior motives and never with any bitterness or hate in his heart.

It’s fortuitous then that Brute saves one of the princes of the realm, suffering a great handicap in doing so. However, Brute is offered a place in the kingdom as a reward should he want to venture there and sadly, he has nothing to lose but to just try a new avenue of life as keeper of a condemned man.

One can easily imagine what happens. Brute’s pure and kind soul takes very good care of Gray, and of course, they fall in love. Just when you think it’s not possible for these two to have a happy ending, Brute figures out a way to escape, and the win and redemption of both was just so very lovely.

I’m happy I finally read this MM classic, and if you haven’t yet, don’t delay! You won’t regret it!

4.3 Stars - Emotional and very nice about a real old-fashioned hero

Brute is such a beautiful fairy tale about a wonderful gigantic, and fantastic good hearted, hero. I really, really enjoyed this lovely story and it showed me how strong grand love is and how brave a person that no one believes in can prove to be.
“Y-you're a giant because an ordinary man's body is t-to small for what you are.”

I always LOVE these old-fashioned fantasy romances. Stories with grand romantic love (..wish I always swallow wholeheartedly), some misery, fear and anxiety, interesting new worlds, narrow alleys, dungeons, baddies, princes, castles and strong goodhearted heroes. If I also get the chance to shed a few tears, it becomes almost an even better book.
 photo image_zpsb92ad81c.jpg

The strong "giant" Brute rescues a prince, loses an arm in the accident, but gets lucky enough to come to the king's palace in Tellomer and become jailers for the blind prisoners Gray Leynham. A man who is called a witch and a traitor.

This story is both sad and quite horrible to begin with and my fragile heart shattered almost for (..ugly?) Brute already in the first chapter. But soon it started anyway brighten for him when he begin to work in the big palace and everything was now much, much better for our sweet book hero.
Pretty soon begin also Brute (aka Aric), as always have been mistreated at home in his small village, to feel for the poor so skinny and desperate but so beautiful prisoner. He starts to give Gray extra food, blankets, water to wash in and comfort him at the nights when has has horrible dreams . Soon, they both feel much more for each other....

The big question here is, of course, if there is a happy future for these lovebirds? Is there a chance for at least a tolerable life together? Two MC's, in the past, so very unfortunate men. - Well..., after all; this is a romance so the hope is always there.
 photo image_zpsa5319213.jpg

Brute is both tenderly beautiful told, exciting, thrilling and rather unpredictable. There are also many wonderful and charming second characters showing Brute that there are a lot of kind and very nice people in the palace who want to be his friends.

I don't see this book as just another steamy M/M romance (..there are a lot of nice steamy and tender parts), but also a wonderful story about being accepted, liked, and loved. To do good and get a lot back from others. In short: to be accepted by your society and to be loved for who you are. Not just for what you look like or what you come from or who you parents are. ~ Really self esteem-enhancing in other words - and it always makes me happy when someone is allowed to grow and get inner peace.
“Don't you d-dare say you're ugly or stupid or worthless. Don't you dare! Y-you’re a giant because an ordinary man’s body is t-too small for what you are.”

I really liked this tale about big strong Brute. A true and genuine fairy-tale hero. He is so worthy a lot of love, hugs, kisses and a happy life. ~ A story to enjoy and be like that nice warm in the heart of. ~ Warmly and sincerely recommended to anyone who likes a romantic M/M fantasy.

I LIKE - yes I really did!

Life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful.

So much pain, grief, and yet solace in finally not being alone. Simply heartfelt, a love beyond.

It was the only time anyone ever touched him, and, as meaningless as those touches were, he suspected that he’d shrivel up and die without them.

And to Bree: This made me so happy. I kept saving it for a special moment since you told me it was amazing.

Fantastic fantasy story about a giant of man who everyone perceives is a brute because of his size and looks when in fact he is loving caring man. He's injured saving the life of a prince and is offered the job of caring for a blind prophetic prisoner.

This story just killed me in some places. Heart wrenching stuff here, I really loved it. There's some really solid fantasy world building here. Great characters and dialogue. This was so close to a five star read for me but the ending wasn't as strong as the first 3/4 of the read. Still good but when compared to the stellar lead up it was a bit of a let down in some respects.

Highly recommended read for any lover of fantasy M/M romance.

This felt very much like a classic, in league with the likes of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ or 'The Princess Bride'.

What stands out here is Brute’s innate goodness. He isn’t only the epitome of a gentle giant, his kindness and human compassion are truly humbling. The word ‘unassuming’ must have been invented for him. Putting everyone before himself is his only MO, and he thinks that’s nothing special!

At times, I really wanted to hug that guy and tell him how wonderful he is, as a life time of being told that he is stupid and ugly have left him with absolutely no expectations about his own happiness.

I’m glad to say he doesn’t only better himself (and I totally loved that part of the story!), but he does find happiness in the end. Very deservedly.

I inhaled this book in one go because I genuinely cared about Brute and Gray, and I needed to know how it would end. Kim Fielding creates a rich world, described in much detail, I could virtually feel, see and smell (Lol, although some of the smells are definitely not very enticing!).
There is a little bit of heat, but it’s certainly not a central part of the story. Most of the feelings between the MCs are affection and tenderness.

Only one thing confused me a bit. Brute’s real name is Aric, and once we find out about it, the author uses the second name, but then returns to use ‘Brute’ later on again. I have no idea if this is deliberate (and I missed some kind of message here) or whether it’s simply an oversight.

This is a minor observation though. For those who like fantasy or who loved their classics this will definitely be a win!

This is a lovely M/M romance set in what is very definitely a fairy-tale mood and story arc. Brute/Aric is a wonderful, slightly larger-than-life character, in more ways than one. He is kind, patient, strong, smart if uneducated, compassionate, restrained... and lonely. Gray, the prisoner he is set to watch, and whom he gradually befriends, is a perfect foil, a man whose treatment has been so harsh that he needs every ounce of the caring and support Aric gives him. The fact that Gray gives back the first deep human affection Aric has had since his mother died adds sweetness and poignancy. The story arc is familiar, the resolution expected, smooth and easy, but because this is couched in fairy-tale terms and tropes, that feels right and complete rather than boring.

Once upon a time in a land far far away, where magic exists there was a man who lived a lonely and abused life.

In fact the villagers where he lived didn’t even call him by his name. They called him Brute, that’s how they saw him as a large, dumb, strong, disfigured beast only good for labor. Aric (Brute) is alone in the world, both of his parents dead he is merely existing. Until one day the prince comes to inspect the work and falls over a cliff, Brute rescues the prince and his life changes……

This was a wonderful, heartbreaking, emotional read, that definitely had a fairytale quality to it. After rescuing the prince Aric (Brute) is given a job at the palace to guard a man who is accused of being witch and a traitor (Gray). No one wants to guard Gray for fear of his magic ability. So alone with Aric and Gray become comfortable around each other. Aric has a huge compassionate, loving, brave heart and does his best to make Gray’s life as comfortable as possible. And despite being an abused prisoner Gray is caring and accepting of Aric and eventually they grow to have feelings for each other. But Gray is condemned to live his life a prisoner, Aric can’t stand the thought so he makes a decision.

The outcome was what I expected and the story progressed as I thought it would. Like I said this had a fairytale feel and fairytales always end well. But despite this, I thoroughly loved this story. My heart broke for both of these characters and my heart was 100% pulled in. Aric is someone who have to love and his story breaks your heart, and as the two tortured souls grow closer and find love your heart fills with warmth and happiness. There wasn’t a lot of steamy action in this, mostly fade to black moments really, but again I wasn’t disappointed. This was a fairytale after all, so what you have plenty of are emotionally filled and romantic moments, just perfect!

This is another story that will stay with me and i will smile knowing Aric and Gray lived happily ever after….

5 stars!

This book..it kinda broke me. That's why I loved it.

description

I don't listen to many audiobooks, but I decided to give 'Brute' a try because of the raving reviews from my friends. I was hooked from the moment I pressed play. This is was my first time listening to K.C. Kelly, and I was completely blown away. The narrator breathed life in to every character, with each voice being entirely unique. Often I have to really concentrate to follow along when I'm listening to an audiobook, but here I didn't even have to try. This was definitely one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.

I'm a fan of angst, the more gut-wrenching the better. 'Brute' has gut-wrenching angst in spades. I wanted to wrap Brute, or Aric, up in a hug from very early on. Once Gray came in to the picture, I was a mess. Then I wanted to wrap both of them in a hug. They both kept going, no matter what was thrown at them. I loved seeing them come together, tentatively and not willing to believe that they deserved each other. I swooned a bit every time one of them told to other why he loved him.

There's very little sex on page, except for a few glossed-over references. Normally, I like my books to have a full-on sex scene or two. In 'Brute', I didn't miss it one bit. I was entranced by the story. Aric and Gray's love is so obvious, that you don't need the sex to back it up.

The mythical world Kim Fielding created was entertaining. It has some of the trademark elements of historical fantasy: a palace, a sprawling city by a river, magic and sorcery, and a sacred forest. But what I enjoyed most was the large cast of secondary characters. Each of them had some sort of impact on Aric, and ultimately on Aric and Gray's relationship.

'Brute' is a must-read (or listen) for all MM fantasy lovers. I can't recommend it enough!

I honestly did not see this book coming. I knew all my friends liked it, but I avoided reading the blurb & reviews for over a year, and from the cover I thought it might be a Stockholm Syndrome story (which, considering my reading habits, wouldn't have been an issue at all). Wrong! This is the sweetest, most gentle love story ever.

The first chapters were sad, but they created a wonderful touchstone for the main character's development. And speaking of the MC, nothing prepared me for Brute.
I fell in love with him from the very first sentence. He made me gush, and awwww and sniffle, and root for his happiness.

Then Gray appeared, and that was another kind of heartbreak altogether.

Reading about these two men living in the darkness, finding their way towards the light, was like a balm to the soul in these troubled times.

Very much recommended.

It's not a 5 because of one minor issue regarding .

I was thinking of deleting a star for this book but after thinking it over I realised the problem was mine and not the books. The story telling and the world created deserve the full 5 stars.

.

While reading this one my emotions were put through the wringer. The cruelty, be it intentional or simply in ignorance really tore at me.

Brute is the kinda guy that if you just took the time to talk to him you would see he is a wonderful human being. Sadly, as in too many cases, his size and looks stopped people from even trying.

Gray was a puzzle at first. His punishment had me fearing he was an evil awful man. But no in truth he was simply a naïve and foolish young boy who paid a much higher price than he deserved.

Prince Friddy, despite his change at the end left me feeling disappointed and rather glad he was a few brothers away from the crown. He was weak and selfish in my eyes, not the kind of man you would want ruling your kingdom. For me he’s suddenly standing up to his father was just too little too late.

This was a fairy tale, set in a fairytale land, and this is where my problem came in. I wanted a fairytale PERFECT ending, instead I got a fairytale ending. Yes it’s a HEA but its not the perfect HEA I wanted. After going through so much hurt, seeing so much suffering and pain, shedding enough tears my eyes were sore, I wanted that perfect fix. I wanted all the wrong doings amended, and it’s a fairytale so why couldn’t I have my complete fairytale turn back time kinda fantasy ending???

My issues aside this was a beautifully crafted tale, the author deserves much credit for creating a wonderful world.

ETA Still a wonderful read, but I still wish they had been totally healed :P

3 Stars for the story.

5 Stars for Brute.

Overall a 3.5 star but I'm round up for the giant.

Fantastical fairytale story. Heartbreaking, bitter sweet reading with an oh so satisfying conclusion.
I really liked this one, and I have to be honest and say it was because of Brute - the gentle mistreated giant.

Loved him, absolutely everything about Brute endeared me to him. There is nothing you can say against Brute without me killing you. I will defend him viciously against any and all who dare.

A wonderful story of courage and redemption, hope, love and friendship ( a cliche statement I know, but that's what it is) A fantastical fairy tale of Gods and giants, wizards and magic, with a handsome Prince and an angry King.

Fantasy is not a genre I read much of anymore, but I think I really really want to. I like this m/m fantasy theme, so any recommendations welcome:)

I'm self-centered, sullen, and frequently rude, so it's usually a toss up when I read about someone so pure and good. Either I want to scoop their eyeballs out and just go Hostel on their holier than me asses because who are they kidding with their Mary Sue-ing and Gary Stu-ing - people are not that fucking kind; or I want to self flagellate and curl into a fetal position because I'm a horrible person and I deserve horrible things.

This book is all in the latter category. I went through it alternating between fascination with the story and Brute's journey, and shame because people suck I suck this is why I can't have nice things.

Brute is a kind soul and a huge heart wrapped in 7'6" of ugly. He endures taunts, jeers, and disgust from the people in his village and has resigned himself to a future of hard labor with little pay and occasional trips to the city to visit a molly house where the whores treat him as well as the people from his village.

His fortunes change when he saves the prince and is given the reward of a relatively easy but mysterious job guarding a prisoner said to be a witch and a traitor. He does more than guard, however, and ends up falling for his mysterious ward and choosing between a life with friends and respect that he's come to earn in the palace or trying to find a way to break his beloved from the tower.

It was very easy to fall in love with Brute. He was fairy tale kind, hardworking, well-endowed, resilient, and a perfect combination of resignation and hope that I had no idea could be pulled off well. We first met him bullied, orphaned, and friendless yet insistent on surrounding himself with music even if said music could only be found in his out of tune humming. We cheered when he got his chance at a better life and loved him even more when he didn't turn out to be an asshole like other former bullying victims when situations are reversed.

Gray, the prisoner, IMO was a perfect match for Brute, not because he was blind and wouldn't care how Shrek-y the giant looked, but because they both had been given shitty hands by the gods and could really appreciate the gift of having someone touch you without anger, disgust, or that awful need of other people to be mean just because they could. They were both grateful for every scrap of kindness and the value of even the smallest acts of friendship.

And it's not just Brute and Gray that shone in this story, but the world itself. It sort of felt like medieval fantasy ala Game of Thrones and I loved every detail of the kingdom and the islands and the people. The supporting characters were also fleshed out from the whores to the most adorable little schoolgirl. Even the food was described so wonderfully that I could almost taste it.

I loved this story. I loved Gray. I loved Brute.

Sure, some might say the giant was too kind and too noble and basically too good to be true, but fuck if I care. With how shitty things are in real life and how I can't stand my own company sometimes, it's nice to read about someone who's not always watching out for #1 or thinking the world owes them shit. I do that enough by myself, thanks.

I was tempted to rate this a star lower just because I got a bit cross with the Josh Lanyon ending (for the love of God, an epilogue would not give you a rash!), but Brute deserved everything I could give him. With how awesome this book made me feel, I felt I owed the guy as much.

When I was little we had a great armchair placed in our loggia in which I used to curl up with a book and spend many an afternoon (or a day). In this armchair I felt safe and lost in another world, a world full of dappled sunlight, the buzzing of bees and stories. When my parents threw away the armchair, I lost a part of my childhood. Reading this book reminded me of that kind of feeling, of sunlight, warmth, good story, lost in that world and I loved it and cried for that armchair all over again.

This was my first Fielding and I think we started out marvellously. Her almost fairy-tale picked up two of societies discards and elevated them to heroes. Aric and Gray have whittled a place in my heart. Beautiful to read, beautiful to feel. Brute is a work of art which I am glad to have met. It made me feel good and brought me memories which I had forgotten. Memories of my armchair and the afternoons spend enfolded in its arms. Memories of holding on to my grandfather’s hand and going for walks, with me chattering and him listening. These memories might bring tears to my eyes but such a happy smile on my lips.

Buddy Read with Giulio and Nick. Thank you guys for the company and thank you Giulio for urging me to read this.

~4 stars for the story, 5 stars for the narration~

Very enjoyable fantasy story with a medieval feel which has it all: sweetness and angst, love and loyalty, self-sacrifices and compassion.

The narration was so good! How K.C. Kelly portrayed Gray and his stutter almost had me in tears.

Only 7% but really liking the voice of this story so far

It's really slow at parts but not bad. I didn't really care about him walking around the city window shopping with the kid. And stuff like that just seems like unnecessary filler.

I'm still liking it but its really repetitive. Keeps saying te same things over and over. About his mom, his uncle, the village people. And about his whore house visits. And I that's not bad enough there's now a flash back to him visiting the whore house. Which is pretty much all details we already had just now it's getting specific with the sex.

Honestly this seems pointless and is flat out ruining the story for me. This went from a five star story down to a 2 or 3 now. We'll see how this pointless scene plays out.

Yeah this whole brothel thing killed my enjoyment of the story. 39% and pulled out of the story enough not even sure I want to continue it.

Haven't gotten back into it but its still so repetitive. It's like it's just pasting the same info. We get it you haven't cried in forever not even when ... And then the list we've already read is pasted again.

Also the name change is confusing and unfitting. Every time I read Alric I'm like who? And it's distracting, this had an amazing beginning but now it's just blah and not really going anywhere

Is this geography lesson going to have a point because its already been dragging on and is boring

Is it just me or when you first met Warrin doesn't he seem older, especially since he's talking about how big brutes cock is and seeing Brute naked. Then each time you see him he seems younger and younger to the point he can't leave with out a baby sitter and is like a little kid in a candy store, when Brute takes him to the candy store. It's just WTF

There is no sense of time in this. Brute wakes up and it could be hours, days, or months passed.

53% and brute is barely with grey. He's only there at night and those scenes are brief. Mostly we're following brute to school, the library, to watch the guards train, to the kitchen, around the palace or city, to the brothel. I'd rather see him and grey together for more than just brute feeds them, they have sex and go to sleep.

I'm wondering what happened to the awesome book this started out as?

We get it. Brutes a great caring compassionate person. Do we really need to read about him going out to the city, again,in the rain, again, with Warrin, again, to find a homeless person? You couldn't something this up with ought all the city descriptions and shit again?

I think this would have been amazing with a content editor. It's very repetitive and needs tightened up, it's unfortunate IMO

There's this whole chapter of him walking around the city in excessive detail, in the cold and the rain literally giving the poor the shirt off his back as he searched for a homeless guy. And he finds the homeless guy who's in such a dreary situation even the other homeless have shunned him. He's alone and then does in brutes arms. Then this never mentioned again! Wtf? What was the point? Just to show how compassionate and selfless Brute is? Cause the whole book has been doing that. After he hits someone and knocks them out he's worshipped like a hero but after this he's called an idiot and it's forgotten about?! Seriously? Yeah whole thing seems ridiculous and contrived.

Then it jumps a year! Wtf? A year and the books in the exact same place. There's been no development except now the prisoner and brute in love but we still only see them together when brute feeds him before sleeping. And it's really hard to think of this as love when Grey had been chained up for over 12 years and in that time Brutes first person to be nice to him. So love or just hey someone finally feeding me and not kicking me. Yeah Greys more like a dog than an actual developed character.

See comments below for lack if world building. But still it makes a big deal out of the gods giving a gift for a price. We thought it was his eyes, but nope. So what is this great price? Other than gift of sight from the gods all we know is random people are healers. That's it. Then there is the geography lesson and the history of the wars. I found this boring and doesn't really develop the world as special but just a common history lesson

Made it to 62% but have lost all interest in how this turns out. It's just dragging from one random scene to another. And the whole secondary character wedding planning and their house details and blah blah so boring. I'm pretty sure it's just going to be a cliche brute offers himself to the gods to take away what's his names curse blah blah cliche cliche

So two stars for the beginning but wow, what a disappointment

I love rooting for the underdog and that's exactly what I was doing in this whole book!

Where do I start?? First off, Brute was such a lovable giant with a heart as big as he was. He was mistreated and still had a heart of gold. I absolutely fell in love with him. The way he was with Gray was so sweet and it just made me want great things for him.

This was a story of selfless love. Neither Gray nor Brute (which isn't his real name by the way) had a selfish bone in their body. Each damaged in their own way, though when together, made the perfect match.

I thought the build up between the two characters was done perfectly. There wasn't any type of insta-love and they had time to learn about and appreciate each other.

I truly loved it!!

4.25 ⭐️

“Don’t t-tell you my heart beats for you? Don’t tell you my ssoul sings for you? Don’t tell you that you’re hope to me, l-life to me, the c-center of my fucking universe?”

The storyline was simple, but not predictable which is something I really love in books. Not having too many stuffs to catch up on despite this pretty much covered magic and a glimspe of royal backgrounds. I couldn’t predict what would happen to both of them or what they were going to do throughout the entire book. It was amazing <3 Even though most part of the story was about Gray and Brute in the prison, it was still entertaining :) And with the easy writing, I enjoyed the story unfolds so, so much.

I really love the concept of the story. Especially with Gray’s history. It was fun with the magics, but sad to know what he had been through, I can’t imagine being in his place :(

I do expect for more details on the descriptions especially with Brute’s backstory and characters’ personalities. It would be a wrong judgement to say that this was lacking of depth, but the monologues were a lot telling than showing. However, I do realise that this is not written in a way that I am familiar with. So, my disliking is entirely on me. It was still a consistent and easy read, hence it didn’t bother me that much. I eventually got to adjust to the story and thought, ’oh, this is just how the book meant to be.’. There were also some scenes that made me tear up and was so sad, my heart broke… It was sappy, a little cute and giddy, also sad sometimes :(

Brute and Gray’s connection was amazing to see. The way they share all of those little touches and moments were so sweet and both of them were so gentle with each other. Like I said, I do wish something different for both of their personalities, but I still love that both of them are flawed just the way they are, and manage to find strength and peace within each other. I adore that a lot about both of them.

All in all, this was a great read, tbh, I can imagine giving this a higher rating if I am not in my slumpy-erotica mood LOL. I promise, I do judge a book by it’s cover 😂 that’s why I have to thank Hugo for the push for this one 👀❤️

RE-READ: Apr 2024

Loved it! I've been waiting too long for this re-read.
I haven't found any WOW reads this year yet. And although I've been devouring book after book for the last couple of months, I've felt as if I was constantly struggling through a reading slump... :(

But... Aric and Gray made my heart melt. Again!
Thank you very much, Kim Fielding - you've saved me.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I've just recommended Brute to a friend and realised I haven't written any review of it yet! I must have overlooked it... because it was GREAT!

Brute, maimed in a terrible accident, is a giant with a gentle heart and pure soul. After having lost his hand saving a prince, he takes up a position of a prison guard to a dangerous and treacherous mage, Gray - or so he thinks.
In reality things might not be what they seem they are. And Gray may have more secrets than it is revealed to his now jailer.

For Brute it's incomprehensible how anyone can deserve the lot Gray was sentenced to: shackled and chained in a dark, freezing cell, dirty, emaciated and blind.
The conditions Gray is held in contradict Brute's gentle soul and, against his better judgement, he starts to show kindness towards his ward...

I don't want to spoil you the pleasure of reading this beautiful story but I must say that I liked everything in it! The world-building with the Tellomer castle and the surrounding city was detailed and easy to imagine. The supporting characters were such a treat! The good-hearted kitchen girl Alys with her impish brother Warin were as good as family for Brute. The little Quoen was adorable. Prince Aldfrid and Lord Maudit added depth to the story.

The writing style was captivating and well-paced, it kept me hooked from cover to cover. One of the best books I've read in a loooong time. Kim Fielding outdid herself! 5 fully earned stars!!! :)
